Fans of the VW Bus vehicles joined in on an open-air party on the grounds of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Hannover plant. A convoy of around 350 vehicles from all six generations of the platform traveled from Wolfsburg to Hannover, where the current T-series is being made.

The event was the final highlight of the four-day VW Bus Summer Festival in Wolfsburg’s Allerpark, of which Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles was the main sponsor. Members of the Board of Management and Works Council, Hannover Mayor Stefan Schostok, Hannover 96 Football Club President Martin Kind and a number of celebrities took part in the parade.

The convoy’s trip is symbolic of the 1956 relocation of T-series production to Hannover, the state capital of Lower Saxony, where the Transporter has been manufactured since. Though the idea of celebrating the relocation of a van plant may seem peculiar to some, many VW Bus fans consider it as important as a major religious holiday.

Dr Eckhard Scholz, Chief Executive Officer of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand, led the convoy from start to finish. He drove his own cumulus white, 1965 T1 with a near 44bhp engine for the journey. He then had a meet and greet sessions with fans at the Stöcken factory in Hannover.

Speaking of the event, Dr. Scholz, said, “It was a fantastic experience to drive to the Hannover production site with so many proud VW Bus owners in order to celebrate the conclusion of the VW Bus Summer Festival here with even more fans. Our VW Buses are more than just a means of getting from A to B.”

He then added, “They are part of a wonderful lifestyle feeling that constantly travels with you – and has done so across every vehicle generation. This easy-going lifestyle feeling could also be felt throughout the entire festival. It was simply lovely.”

During the event, many VW Bus enthusiasts had the opportunity to look at a number of T-series collector’s vehicles and reminisce about the good ‘ol days and their own past experiences. It is said that each Bus is rich in history, and that cannot be replicated or relived with another. It has offered generations, the freedom to travel where and whenever they desired.

Despite the ongoing diesel-gate scandal, Volkswagen’s sales figures don’t seem too shabby. Based on a report published by the automaker, things are starting to look rosy again for the German based manufacturer.

In the past two months alone, VW’s sales figures have grown by 3.5 to 4.0 percent. That equates to roughly 2.9 million vehicles that have been sold worldwide in the first half of this year. By comparison, the automaker managed to sell 0.3 percent more cars this year than it did during the same period in 2016.

There’s also been above average market growth in certain areas. in the US, where VW’s image has been hit the worst, saw an increase of about 8.2 percent. In South America there was a 12.2 growth, Russia recorded 17.9 while China only saw an increase of about 0.2 percent.

Volkswagen attributes the rise in sales these past few months to its broad portfolio of vehicles, which have been able to appeal to varying tastes. Despite the dark clouds that have been looming directly above the automaker, many car buyers still regard VW vehicles as some of the best in the world. And with the launch of new models like the Polo, Arteon and Tiguan Allspace, VW hopes this rusrugence in sales will be bolstered even further.

“The Volkswagen brand is on the right track. There is strong demand for our cars throughout the world and our strategic realignment is showing positive effects on business operations”, explained Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen brand.

He added, “We have successfully embarked on a new phase in our company. Our objective is to position Volkswagen in such a way that it is fully and completely viable for the future so that we can continue to play a leading role in the automobile world of the future.”

Financially, VW has taken a number of steps to help weather the storm, which include improving vehicle costs and optimizing its product portfolio. The result, is a robust manufacturing system that is able to cope with demand and churn out new as well as improved vehicles in a timely manner.

The Board of Management of the Volkswagen Brand have said that sales forecast of this year is expected to rise 10 percent compared to the same period lat year. Also, an operating return of 2.5 to 3.5 percent on sales of higher end models is to be expected. Medium-term and long-term return on sales of the brand are expected to reach at least 4 per cent by 2020 and 6 per cent by 2025.

If things continue to pick up, VW may finally be able to put this diesel scandal behind them and continue to produce some of the best cars that they have to offer. And we hope that this happens sooner rather than later.

Volkswagen will begin importing its cars to Iran after a 17 year absence. Heavy international sanctions were levied against Iran due to its unscrupulous nuclear programme. However, in 2016 the United Nations decided that it was satisfied with Iran’s cooperation on the matter and decided to lift these sanctions.

Mammut Khodra, a privately owned company in Iran will be the official Iranian importer of the Groups’s Scania and Volkswagen vehicles. It will initially distribute vehicle through eight different dealers, placing an emphasis on the Teheran region.

Mammut Group, parent company of Mammut Khodra (Khodra means automobile), was established in 1995. And is one of the biggest private industrial companies and employers in Iran, which is active in the fields of automotive, construction, IT, logistics, telecommunications and financial services.

Speaking the collaboration, Anders Sundt Jensen, project manager for the Iranian market at Volkswagen, said, “By returning to Iran, the Volkswagen brand is filling in another blank spot on the global automotive map. We are thus strengthening our international presence still further. At the same time, we are taking our very latest models with premium features to our Iranian customers.”

Volkswagen will be importing the Tiguan and Passat to the Iranian automotive market to offer car buyers more modern, smarter and safer vehicles. Iranians haven’t seen a new VW since the Gol was launched in the 1990s. Up until then, Volkswagen passenger cars have been a common sight on their roads because the Beetle and Bulli were favourites over there from the 1950s onwards.

The German automaker completely withdrew from the Iranian market in 2000 and the 17 year gap has meant that it has lost touch with the needs and wants of customers in that country. As such, the initial aim of reintroducing these vehicles to the market is to gain an insight into needs of the current market and offer Iranians modern technologies that are made in Germany.

The Iranian government has stated that there will be about 3 million new vehicle registrations in their passenger car market per year in the near future. But we shall have to wait and see if that becomes a reality in the next few years.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VCPM) has announced several more locations where it will conduct its safety-centric driver education programme, Polo P. It was developed with a goal in mind, to educate and empower new drivers with the skills and knowledge that will help them stay safe while driving.

It was launched in March of last year and has so far received 250 participants consisting of students from various colleges as well as young adults in the Klang Valley. Since its inception, each session has always been conducted at selected college and university campuses over an entire weekend. The same is true for the 5 new locations mentioned in this article.

In each session, participants are taught basic car maintenance, visual checkpoints, proper sitting and steering positions, and defensive driving which includes emergency braking and navigating past a slalom course. The vehicle of choice this programme is the 1.6-litre Polo hatchback.

The sixth generation Polo has finally been revealed and its the largest ever made in the nameplate’s history. Measuring 4,053mm long, 1,751mm wide and 1,446mm high, its slightly longer and wider than the Mk5 car, which gives rise to a wheelbase that is 92mm wider. This means that cabin space has increased as well and the boot space is 25 per cent more at 351 litres.

Built on the MQB platform, the reason for the increase in size was to achieve a more grown up look, something that previous generation cars lacked. It’s design borrows heavily from that of the Golf. The headlights, front grille and the curvature of the front bonnet seem very much like that of the Mk7 Golf, which isn’t bad thing. From the rear however, not much has changed with the exception of the rear LED taillights being a bit larger and blends better with the curvature of the bodywork.

Speaking of this, Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand, said, “The much better proportions create the framework for a grown-up, confident appearance of the sixth generation Polo – charismatic, progressive, contemporary and friendly. We have systematically capitalized on this realignment of dimensions to build a compelling compact car. A Polo with an expressive design which makes the compact – now as a four-door only – sportier, cleaner and unique within the brand range. This is a car that fits in perfectly with our times.”

The new Polo comes with a range of engines which include a two turbocharged and two non-turbocharged 1.0-litre engines, a turbocharged 1.5-litre and the range topping 2.0-litre TSI that will power the new Polo GTI. Some of them are able to run on natural gas, which is a first for the Polo. Transmission options range from a 5-speed gearbox to a 7-speed DSG one. There are also two turbo diesel engines that will be made available for the Polo, however, since it isn’t relevant for our market, we will leave it out.

Inside, the Polo features an all new interior including a new dashboard layout that feature modernized digital displays and controls as well as a whole host of connectivity options. The infotainment display comes with a 6.5-inch screen as standard, which should improve use. There’s also an Active Info Display feature that provides drivers with the relevant information as and when needed.

The car will be launched in a number of versions including Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, Beats special edition (featuring Beats sound system) and another that comes with the new Polo GTI. There are also a couple of Lifestyle packages available for the car. Most, depending on variant, will be feature packed with the latest safety tech that include Front Assist, Blind Spot Detection and Park Assist, apart from the usual ABS, EBD and the like.

Front Assist helps with emergency braking to avoid frontal collisions on highways, secondary roads and city streets. Coupled with the pedestrian monitoring system, the car is able to monitor the road ahead for obstacles and warn the driver and intervene brake assisting functions when it deems it necessary.

The blind spot detection system works in tandem with the Adaptive Cruise Control (radar guided) one to monitor the road ahead, keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, assist with rear traffic alert when reversing out of parking spaces (applies brakes when senses impending collision) and warns drivers of vehicles in their blind spot while changing lanes.

VW has made the Polo available worldwide with 14 different body colours and 13 dashpad colours to offer an array colour matching combinations. No word yet on when it will be made available in Malaysia, but it shouldn’t take very long.

One of the most valuable Type 2 VW camper vans in existence, which is worth £90,000 or RM490,671 will leave Windrush Car Storage (UK) for Goodwood where it will go under the hammer during the Goodwood Festive of Speed event.

Windrush is known for being a luxury spa for vehicles. There, automobiles are treated with the best care and detail service. Security is tight at the state-of-the-art Cotswold facility to ensure that only authorized personnel have access to these extremely valuable vehicles that are kept in a dehumidified and climate-controlled environment to maintain an optimum condition, which best suit their preservation despite the lengthy storage duration.

This Type 2 VW Camper was subjected to the very same treatment and has been kept in pristine condition at the facility for almost five years after its owner, Steve Quinn completed the vehicle’s meticulous restoration process.

Quinn acquired the rust-free, ex-California VW Camper in 2008. Back then, it didn’t have an engine and was in dire need of a makeover. Now, the vehicle has a new 100bhp 2.0-litre engine as well as a fully reworked interior that features wood paneling for the storage areas and chrome on the bumpers and rims and extensive white and blue paintwork.

There’s also modern tech features that include an Alpine surround sound system, DVD player and an internet connection. Since the completion of the restoration work, the vehicle has only traveled 2,897km, making it an extremely low mileage classic.

Regarding the storage of his beloved VW Camper, Quinn said, “The car was always kept in the very best condition and the team at Windrush even pointed out potential faults to ensure it continued running smoothly. I do love my Camper but it’s time to pass the torch. I’ll certainly be recommending Windrush to whoever is lucky enough to win at the auction!”

The Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place from 29th June to 2nd July and will play host to a number of spectacular motoring events including a vehicle display that consists of a number of vintage and modern Formula One cars. Volkswagen has provided us with a sneak peak of what the new Polo will look like. It’s not much to go on but the picture does reveal some intricate details of the new car’s side profile. The rear lights are similar in shape to the current car but its innards are far more sophisticated and may feature LED type illumination system. The design appears somewhat familiar to those found on the current crop of Audi vehicles.

Dimensions wise, the changes are minimal at best, but based on what we can see with the side profile, the new car should feature a more angular silhouette and also incorporates more prominent contours than the vehicle it replaces.

Speaking of the new car, Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design Volkswagen Brand, said “This Volkswagen can immediately be made out as the original of its class, but also as a completely new generation. A Polo with an expressive design which makes the compact sportier, cleaner and unique within the brand range. This is a car that fits in perfectly with our times – both visually and technologically.”

The brand new Volkswagen Polo will make its debut in Berlin this Friday, so stay tuned and we will bring you more as soon as we find out.

Volkswagen has a few treats for Malaysians this festive season. Besides launching three new cars, the German automaker is also offering some pretty sweet deals for those interested in purchasing a new VW.

The new Beetle, Vento ALLSTAR and Vento GT have been launched simultaneously and will be on display at Mid Vally Megamall from 24 to 28 May 2017. The Beetle, has been updated with new styling and an array of body colours that include Pure White, Tornado Red, Blue Silk, Dark Bronze, Habanero Orange and White Silver.

Compared to the outgoing car, the new one gets 2-zone climatronic AC system, touchscreen infotainment system with App-Connect, leather trim “Vienna” seats with front seat lumbar support, bi-xenon headlamps and LED daytime running lights. The car is powered by a 103bhp 1.2-litre turbocharged TSI engines that is mated to a 7-speed DSG transmission. The new Beetle is available to order in Design and Sport variants with prices starting from RM136,888.

The Vento ALLSTAR which is priced from RM78,888, receives minor design tweaks that allow out to stand out when compared to the base car. it is available in Reflex Silver and Candy White body colours and comes equipped with leather seats, aluminium sports pedals, rear spoler, black door strips and trunk garnish as well as ALLSTAR scuff plates, emblems and carpet mats.

Its mechanicals are of the tried and tested kind because it is equipped with VW’s workhorse 1.6-litre MPI engine which is paired to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The engine develops close to 105bhp and 153Nm of torque that will allow the sedan to offer a fuel consumption figure of just 6.5-litres per 100km.

Volkswagen is also throwing in a new MY VW Drive App with the Vento ALLSTAR. It provides drivers with numerous functions including driving style, fuel consumption tracking, enhances driver safety and control as well as provides information on car status and performance. It will also allow drivers to get help from Mondial Roadside Assistance in case of an emergency.

Lastly, the Vento GT is now available to order with a price tag that starts from RM89,888 but comes loaded with a total of RM9,000 worth of exclusive accessories that include a Stain black roof and exterior mirror wraps, black door strips, leather seats, aluminium sports pedals, GT aerokit as well as GT scuff plates, emblems and carpet mats.

The car has been made available in either Reflex Silver or Candy White body colours. But it will only come with the 1.2-litre turbocharged engine and 7-speed DSG gearbox, the same combination as what is offered with the new Beetle. Touted as the sedan with the highest torque in its class, the Vento was awarded the Compact Car of the Year award at last year’s 2016 Malaysia Car of the Year ceremony.

Volkswagen will be debuting the new up! GTI at this year’s GTI Meet at Lake Wörthersee, which will take place from 24th to 27th May 2017. The performance up! builds upon the the small and cheerful city car making it into an improved performance car with decent handling characteristics. Whether or not the market is ready for such a performance city car remains to be seen, but based on past history, VW has been known for disrupting trends and generating an interest in a whole new genre of vehicles that people didn’t know they wanted.

The GTI moniker was first introduced in the 1970s when the German automaker decided to make a performance version of its standard family hatchback, the Golf. Back in the day, only big sedans and expensive sports cars had the performance to offer heart-racing driving action. Their big displacement engines and raw power made the vehicles very expensive and out of the reach of the common man. Well, Volkswagen was having none of that, and set out to create car that offered sports car-like performance but on a shoestring budget.

Their efforts eventually came to fruition with the introduction of the first generation GTI. There were very few subtle cues that set the car apart from the average run of the mill Golf. It had a thin red stripe stretching across the entire length of the front grille, black double stripes across the side sills, black stripe on the tailgate and of course, several GTI badges. The car had a near 110bhp engine and weighed just 810kg, which meant 0-100km/h sprints could be accomplished in just 9.0 seconds and the car had a stop speed of 182km/h.

Over the years, the GTI has grown in size and weight to comply with safety regulations as well as the needs and wants of the modern consumer. Due to this fact, The present day GTI hasn’t retained much of the original’s DNA. But with the up! GTI, things are a lot more similar. It weighs 997kg and under the hood is a turbocharged 113bhp TSI engine, which allows the car to accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 8.8 seconds. In essence, the up! GTI can be considered as the modern day equivalent of the first generation GTI.

It comes with with the usual GTI striping on the bodywork, 17-inch alloy wheels, a spoiler for better downforce, leather-trimmed sport steering wheel, GTI gear knob and the iconic “clark” seat pattern.

One can be so bold as to call the up! GTI a direct descendant of the iconic car that started the hot hatch revolution and hopefully, paves the way for the development of many more performance-based small city sized hatchbacks.

The recently launched Volkswagen Tiguan has been well received here in Malaysia. Demand for the German mild off-roader is so strong that VW have had to ramp up production at its Pekan plant to cope with the booking orders.

According to the automaker, the reason people have flocked to the Tiguan instead of its rivals is because it offers solid build quality, balance of style and versatility, decent seating capacity, power and attractive pricing, making it the vehicle a ‘complete package’.

Speaking of the popularity of the Tiguan, Managing Director of VPCM, Mr Erik Winter said, “We are pleased to announce that the Tiguan Highline has been very well-received by Malaysians, and the Comfortline has also caught the eyes of those looking for quality, value-for- money German engineering. The Pekan Plant is working hard on its production timeline to guarantee stock availability, and customers can rest assured that we will be doing our utmost best to ensure and smooth and fast delivery to our new owners.”

The Tiguan is priced at RM148,990 for the Comfortline and RM168,990 for the Highline variant. And to entice customers further, Volkswagen have made the SUV available in a new body colour, called Crimson Red. Both variants of the Tiguan are offered with a 5-year warranty and 5-years’ roadside assistance. But, for limited period, Volkswagen is offering the App Connect function as a complimentary feature for the Tiguan Highline.
