Toyota

Well, hello there! Having seen the Toyota FT-1 Concept at the recent KL International Motorshow 2018, it appears the much-anticipated 2019 Toyota Supra will look pretty similar, as promised. Here are two leaked images, supposedly from a German Toyota distributor who sent them out to prospective buyers, according to AutoExpress.

“The all-new Toyota Supra is due to be officially revealed at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit in January, but these leaked images have revealed the car’s final appearance a month in advance….

The photos, believed to have been sent out in marketing correspondence to prospective customers in Germany by Toyota themselves, give us a clear look at both the front and rear of the fifth generation of the iconic Supra coupe. The images show that the new Toyota Supra’s styling will remain fairly faithful to the FT-1 concept from 2014 – albeit with a narrower body and less prominent snout – with details like the concept’s front splitter and ‘double bubble’ roof making it into the production car”Auto Express.

Toyota Motor Asia Pacific Pte Ltd (TMAP), the sales & marketing regional headquarters of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) in Asia, is offering Total-care Service for 1,500 Toyota vehicles owned by Grab Holdings, Inc. (Grab) in Singapore through its subsidiary GrabRentals. In June 2018, Toyota invested US$1 billion into Grab to advance mobility services in the region. The Total-care Service is a result of a deepening partnership between Toyota, a leading automaker transforming itself into a mobility company, and Grab, the region’s leading O2O mobile platform.

  • Total-care Service is a pioneering set of mobility services designed for ride-hailing companies
  • Aims to achieve ultra-efficient vehicle maintenance using telematics data and Toyota’s philosophy of eliminating inefficiencies

The Total-care Service is an innovative, world’s first service developed specially for ride-hailing companies. Working with ride-hailing companies, like Grab, Toyota can leverage onboard-telematics data through a shared information platform to provide services such as fleet management, automotive insurance and vehicle maintenance packages to extend the life of ride-hailing vehicles, and enhance the driving experience for the end user. Through this Total-care Service, Grab is able to provide its driver-partners with more cost-efficient and timely maintenance services.

TMAP and Grab will offer this service to Grab-owned Toyota vehicles across Southeast Asia in phases. In addition, both companies will work to increase the share of Toyota vehicles in Grab’s fleet in the region by 25% by 2020. In the future, Grab will also seek to implement Toyota’s world-renowned Toyota Production System (TPS), a system based on a philosophy of eliminating waste, to improve Grab’s business operational efficiency.

In general, ride-hailing vehicles accrue five times more mileage than privately-owned vehicles. To keep vehicles in a good and safe condition, it is essential to provide proper vehicle maintenance based on the vehicle’s condition. At Grab, driver-partner and passenger safety is a top priority. By ensuring that Grab’s driver-partners are driving vehicles that are receiving timely maintenance, Grab is able to provide the highest level of safety on its platform.

In October 2018, Grab unveiled its ‘Safer Everyday Tech Roadmap’, comprising product enhancements that aim to raise transport safety standards for the industry in Southeast Asia. As a result of continuous efforts to improve safety on the Grab platform, Grab’s incident rates have decreased by 40% over the last year since Q3 2017.

The partnership with Toyota will complement Grab’s analytical tools that allow drivers to understand how they drive and where they can improve. Grab driver-partners regularly receive telematics reports on their driving patterns like speeding, acceleration and braking, and more parameters will be added over time. Since the rollout of telematics on the Grab driver app last year, there has been a 50% reduction in speeding incidents and 20% reduction in hard braking and sudden acceleration, which are potential causes of road accidents.

Ming Maa, President of Grab, commented: “We are excited to work with Toyota to roll out the Total-care Service to our Grab Rental fleet. The ability to meld data analytics with vehicle maintenance will make our rental fleet even safer for our driver-partners, and go toward achieving our goal to raise transport safety standards in the region.”

Susumu Matsuda, TMAP President, said: “We are starting this world-first Total-care Service here in Southeast Asia, making full use of Toyota’s strength such as our philosophy of Toyota Production System and vehicle connectivity technologies. I believe the service will support the sustainable growth of Grab’s business and help offer even safer and more attractive ride-hailing services.”

Through the Total-care Service, driving data is collected by Toyota’s in-vehicle data-transmission device, TransLog, and sent to the Mobility Services Platform (MSPF), an information infrastructure developed by TMC for vehicle connectivity. Grab, Toyota and its local dealers will use such vehicle data collaboratively to achieve a safer and more secure ride-hailing platform in Southeast Asia. For example, using vehicle data, Grab will be able to provide its driver-partners with support and advice for safety as needed. In addition, the Toyota dealer will apply TPS to vehicle maintenance for Grab-owned vehicles.

In addition, Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance, a Toyota’s affiliated insurance company, will offer telematics-based automotive insurance to GrabRentals, allowing for safer driving and insurance premium reduction. In the area of vehicle maintenance, based on driving and vehicle condition data, maintenance schedule for each vehicle will be optimized. Furthermore, Intensive Care Stall (ICS) has been implemented at Borneo Motors (Singapore) (BMS), the authorized dealer of Toyota in Singapore. Making use of TPS knowhow, ICS achieves ultra- efficient maintenance service which will reduce vehicle downtime and maintenance cost.

(more…)

One of the things that was playing at the back of our minds in regards to KLIMS 2018, was how it was going to be insofar as crowd attendance was concerned. And with that in mind, we headed back to MITEC, the new venue of the KL International Motorshow, on Sunday 25th, technically the first weekend of the show. This is what it looked like! Wait for the surprise at the end…

Another big surprise was the appearance of the Proton R3 Racing Team (below), who’d just won the S1K, or Sepang 1000km Race the day before, and we managed to catch their full interview and meet-the-fans session at the Proton pavilion…

Of course as expected the crowd at the abovementioned Proton pavilion was massive, packed with those who came to see the new X70 SUV, which will be officially launched on 12th December (probably at KL Convention Centre) during which Proton will FINALLY reveal its price…

The 2-wheel section of KLIMS was participated by Kawasaki Malaysia, Benelli and Honda, who showcased the awesome new GoldWing Tourer, remarkable…

It was also heartening to see that Peugeot was getting quite a lot of visitors, many were enthralled by the new Peugeot 308 GTi

Unfortunately, as previously mentioned, there is no official Supercar representation at KLIMS 2018, however, thanks to the ‘peripheral’ pavilions, there was still some eye-candy to ogle… we’re referring to the cars of course…

We’ll be visiting the show again before it ends on 2nd December 2018, so stay tuned for our wrap-up coverage!

Following our previous report on KLIMS or the Kuala Lumpur International Motorshow, we attended the Press Day on 22nd November 2018, and right-off the bat, it’s safe to say that the new venue for KLIMS at the Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre (MITEC) outside downtown KL is definitely a better location, not just in terms of accessibility, but also the floor space and allocated display area. But before we get into that, here’s the video of the official launch ceremony for KLIMS 2018!

Everything also seems a lot better organised this time around, especially in terms of handling the media and providing a proper set-up for us to work. There was free flow of food and drinks in the designated press room, although the room itself was a bit small, considering the number of media personnel who showed up to cover the launch and press day of KLIMS 2018. There was also no designated rest area; let’s not forget that all-in, it was at least a 10-hour day on our feet for many of us. Something to look into for the next one. Here’s our first walkabout video, which we took even before the official launch ceremony. Kudos to all the car brands who participated!

Unfortunately, while the venue itself was a lot better, manufacturer participation was definitely wanting, for apart from Peugeot, Citroen and DS Automobiles, there wasn’t a single other European carmaker in attendance. No Audi, BMW, Volvo or Mercedes-Benz. The latter was represented only thanks to Petronas who grafted what looked like an entire petrol station into KLIMS 2018, replete with a Kedai Mesra shop, while the only Supercars (apart from the Toyota FT-1 in the second video below of course) were what the peripheral pavilions brought in.

That being said, those who did participate put in a tremendous amount of effort to ensure their pavilions looked top notch! Seriously, many of them looked like they belonged in overseas motorshows like BIMS, GIIAS & TMS. Still, at least we were finally able to bring you this ‘live’ coverage of the new Proton X70 SUV, with no restrictions on photos this time. However, while fully expecting to finally learn the official price of the X70 at KLIMS, we were told that the price will be officially announced only on 12th December at the launch extravaganza…

Undoubtedly though, the star of KLIMS 2018 is the incredible Toyota FT-1, which is also known among fan-boys as the new Supra. It definitely deserved it’s own short video….

And in no particular order, here are more videos from KLIMS 2018! (KLIMS 2018 runs from today 23rd Nov to 2nd Dec 2018)

Video: Ford Malaysia put on a superb show for their new Mustang and much-anticipated Ranger Raptor, whose price was announced at RM199,888!

Video: The upstairs hall at KLIMS was dominated by a huge Petronas pavilion, with its own Kedai Mesra, as well as the Motorcycles section…

Video: Perodua unveils the X-Concept and teases a new SUV for 2019…

Thanks to our friends in The Philippines at AutoIndustriya.com, have a look at the all-new 2019 Toyota Camry that’s just been launched in Thailand! Available 4 variants including a Hybrid, the entry-level G model is powered by a 2.0-liter engine that churns out 167 PS and 199Nm of torque, while a new 2.5-litre engine in the V variant makes a healthy 209 PS and 250Nm of torque.

Top of the line would be the Hybrid model, and thanks to the addition of electric motors, it has a combined output of 211 PS. “All three engines have different types of transmissions. The 2.0G has a six-speed automatic, while the 2.5-liter gets bumped up to an eight-speed unit. As for the Hybrid, that uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT)” – AutoIndustriya.com.

“Under the design inspiration of ‘Sensual-Smart Confidence’ the all-new Camry has been reborn as ‘Modern Sport Luxury’ car that has never been seen before. We have also enhanced the Camry’s driving dynamic thanks to Toyota New Global Architecture or TNGA, which includes a newly developed platform, a powerful but efficient Dynamic Force Engines. Besides that, the fourth generation Hybrid System has been re-engineered to offer both a fun drive as well as fuel efficiency,” said Michinobu Sugata, president of Toyota Motor Thailand Company, Ltd.

“Seeing that Thailand is our close neighbor, equipment levels are possibly close to the version that will be sold there. All Thai models get power seats, leather, remote keyless entry, rear sun blinds, wireless charging, and a digital multi-information display. Features such as ventilated seats, head-up display, power lumbar support, triple-zone climate control, and a JBL sound system is reserved for the top of the line variant” said AutoIndustriya.
