Pada Februari, Toyota Motor menghadapi penurunan 7% dalam jualan global berbanding tempoh yang sama tahun lepas. Sebab utama di sebalik penurunan ini ialah penurunan ketara dalam jualan di China, pasaran kereta terbesar di dunia, di mana jualan jatuh sebanyak 36%. Faktor yang menyumbang kepada penurunan ini termasuk masa cuti Tahun Baru Lunar dan persaingan tegang dalam pasaran yang membawa kepada perang harga.

Walaupun menghadapi kesukaran di China, Toyota mengalami peningkatan sebanyak 16% dalam jualan A.S. dan kenaikan 14% dalam jualan Eropah untuk Februari. Bagaimanapun, jualan domestik di Jepun merosot sebanyak satu pertiga disebabkan pemberhentian pengeluaran di Daihatsu, unit kereta kecil Toyota, yang turut menghadapi kerosakan pada reputasinya daripada skandal ujian keselamatan yang dilaporkan hampir setahun lalu.

In February, Toyota Motor experienced a 7% drop in global sales compared to the same period last year. This decline was primarily attributed to a significant decrease in sales in China, the largest auto market globally, where sales plummeted by 36%. The decline in China was influenced by several factors, including the timing of the Lunar New Year holiday and intense competition in the market, leading to a price war.

While the Lunar New Year holiday fell in February this year compared to January last year, contributing to the decline in sales, Toyota also faced challenges from fierce competition in China’s auto market. However, for January and February combined, the sales decline in China was less severe at 0.7%.

Despite the challenges in China, Toyota saw a 16% surge in U.S. sales and a 14% increase in European sales for February. However, domestic sales in Japan plummeted by a third due to production stoppages at Daihatsu, a small car unit of Toyota, which also faced reputational damage from a safety test scandal reported almost a year ago.

Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Toyota, Ted Ogawa, berkata dia tidak pasti kenderaan elektrik akan menjadi sangat popular di Amerika menjelang 2030. Walaupun kerajaan mahukan banyak kereta elektrik di jalan raya, Toyota masih lebih berminat untuk membuat kereta hibrid.

Ogawa berkata Toyota akan terus membuat apa yang orang mahukan, dan sekarang, itu kebanyakannya kereta hibrid. Toyota membelanjakan banyak wang untuk membuat kereta hibrid di Amerika Utara.

Kerajaan mahu lebih separuh daripada semua kereta baharu menjadi elektrik menjelang 2030, tetapi Toyota menyasarkan hanya 30%. Ogawa berkata Toyota mungkin hanya membeli kredit untuk memenuhi peraturan kerajaan dan bukannya mengubah rancangannya.

Ogawa emphasised Toyota’s commitment to aligning with customer demand, which currently leans towards various forms of electrification, predominantly hybrids with internal combustion engines. Toyota’s strategy revolves around meeting this demand while maintaining its hybrid-centric approach.

Toyota’s investment in a $13.9 million battery complex in North Carolina underscores its commitment to hybrid and EV production in North America. The company has poured approximately $17 billion into its US manufacturing operations since 2021, with a particular focus on hybrid production.

While the EPA’s 2030 regulations push for over half of new cars to be BEVs, Toyota’s plan targets only 30%. Ogawa acknowledges the regulatory gap and hints at potential credit purchases to meet compliance while prioritizing customer demand over regulatory pressures.

Despite being a top-selling automaker, Toyota’s EV sales lag behind competitors like Tesla. Ogawa admits the company’s technological gap in battery technology but asserts active efforts to catch up, emphasising not only product development but also creating a supportive ecosystem for BEVs, including charging infrastructure and energy management solutions.

Kataja turned to the Suzuki Hayabusa V8 2.6-liter engine, specifically the Gen One model by Radical Precision Engineering, for its compact design, relatively lightweight, and formidable power.

While the current configuration produces an impressive 345hp at 10,500rpm, VHT Racing has even grander plans. Now, with the Suzuki Hayabusa V8 engine, Kataja’s Toyota Starlet is poised to redefine racing standards, with an estimated 440hp on the horizon. The fusion of cutting-edge technology and a racing legacy is set to make VHT Racing a driving force in the automotive world.
