While Mercedes-Benz Malaysia declined to release their total sales numbers (for 2020), BMW Group Malaysia has done so, announcing that they delivered 11,016 vehicles from across the BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad ranges. With this number, BMW Group Malaysia lays claim to leadership in the premium automotive segment nationwide as their products accounted for over 52% of the segment.

2020 was a challenging year for every industry and it was not just local but global. During the year, BMW Group Malaysia kept up its activities and introduced no less than 25 model variants from the BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad brands. Over 87% of the vehicles sold were assembled locally at the plant in Kedah.

BMW Group Malaysia in 2020

Four of those models were electrified, an area that the company claims leadership in. Over 2,200 units of electrified vehicles nationwide, mainly the hybrid variants of the BMW 5-Series and BMW 7-Series models.

Local and global success
The success of the company in Malaysia mirrored BMW Group’s performance globally with over 2,300,000 units delivered during the year. Over 190,000 were electrified vehicles from the BMW and MINI brands, an increase of over 30% in deliveries of such vehicles from the year before.

BMW Group Malaysia in 2020

In Malaysia, the BMW brand gained 8,903 new owners in 2020, leading the overall premium segment in Malaysia by over 47%. The best-performing model was the 3-Series with over 2,500 units delivered, followed by the 5-Series with over 1,600 units delivered.

The BMW X Family of Sports Activity Vehicles contributed to over 39% of total deliveries, which numbered over 3,200 units. The X1 proved to be very popular with over 1,000 SAVs being registered.

MINI Malaysia recorded almost 1,000 sales, taking more than 5% segment share of the Malaysian premium segment. The 987 units delivered were led by the MINI Countryman model, with over 47% of the total number being the Cooper S Countryman version.

Towards greater electrification
Malaysia has a fast-evolving mindset towards electrified vehicles and BMW is in a dominat position to drive this change. In 2020, it recorded over 2,200 deliveries of electrified BMW and MINI vehicles which included the locally-assembled BMW 330e M Sport as well as the All-Electric MINI.

BMW Group Malaysia in 2020
BMW Group Malaysia also worked with NGOs during the year to deliver food and basic essential grocery to needy families, refugees, and migrant communities in the Klang Valley during the period when movements were restricted.

In light of the travel restrictions and social distancing measures implemented in March last year (and which continue in 2021), BMW Group Malaysia quickly adapted to the changing times by also digitalising many existing touchpoints and services to enhance the premium ownership experience for customers in Malaysia. This was underlined by the introduction of the BMW Shop Online and the MINI eShop, alongside BMW Engage and BMW i-Renewal – expediting essential parts of the premium mobility experience to keep the process as seamless as possible.

BMW Group Malaysia lowers BMW and MINI prices with shorter warranty periods

Cars today are generally reliable and durable, able to last a longer period of time with no major problems. This is due to better manufacturing processes, engineering, materials, etc. so the warranty is really for peace of mind, at least during the initial years of ownership. In fact, warranties typically cover manufacturing defects and wear and tear parts are not covered.

Back in the 1970s, the typical warranty for a new car was a year, or a maximum of 20,000 kms of mileage after original registration. European manufacturers, perhaps understanding that their customers (in Europe) travelled long distances each year, generally didn’t put a mileage limit.

Longer periods as a selling point
Over the years, the warranty period and mileage limit became longer and longer, more as a selling point than anything else. The cars were more durable, but a long warranty period suggested the carmaker had a lot of confidence in its quality, and owners felt better to have the coverage for a longer period.

‘Win-win’ for both sides?
BMW Group Malaysia is now ending that escalation in warranty periods with a new approach that it says will ‘enable greater customer personalisation of their ownership experience’. It’s a win-win situation for both sides; the customer can enjoy a lower price while the company reduces its long-term exposure to warranty claims.

However, there may still be customers who like the peace of mind that a longer warranty period gives and for them, BMW Group Malaysia offers a 5-year Unlimited Mileage Warranty Package or 5-years/100,000-km Service Package as extra-cost options.

RRP: Recommended Retail Price. Prices shown do not have sales tax exemptions.
RRP: Recommended Retail Price. Prices shown do not have sales tax exemptions.

Available for MINI too
The new pricing approach applied to MINI vehicles as well. Customers of this brand can opt to add a 4-year Unlimited Mileage Warranty with Free Scheduled Service (Extended Warranty & Service Package) at the same cost as before. Alternatively, those who prefer to purchase their vehicle at the recommended retail price paired with either the 4-year Unlimited Mileage Warranty Package or 4-year/60,000-km Service Package can do so at a more attractive rate.

In the event that the owner decides, after a year or maximum of two years, that he or she would prefer a longer warranty period, there is still the possibility of purchasing the extended packages which range in price from RM5,900 to RM9,400 (RM2,500 to RM5,600 for MINI), depending on the model. The only thing is that the cost will have to paid as a lump sum rather than being included in the financed amount at the time of vehicle purchase.

Other ownership benefits still included
Regardless of which warranty they choose, all vehicles purchased from authorised dealerships will still come with access to the BMW or MINI Roadside Assistance and Accident Hotline, BMW Group Loyalty+ Mobile App – BMW Privileges Card, MINI Black Card, and BMW and MINI Service Online.

BMW Group Malaysia’s move is an interesting one and it remains to be seen whether it will have an effect on the rest of the industry. It could be a smart move that customers appreciate, or it might be viewed negatively. Nevertheless, with the trade-off being a lower purchase price for the vehicle, there may be positive response at this time when many people give more serious consideration to how much they can or should spend on a new vehicle.

More information on products, services and pricings can be found at www.bmw.com.my or www.mini.my. Personalisation of a vehicle purchase can be done via BMW Shop Online or MINI Online Shop.

BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia extends services to customers

COVID-19

BMW Financial Services Malaysia today announced the service extension of the BMW Engage feature to the all-new BMW Premium Selection digital experience – in line with their commitment to digitalise touch points early last month.

The BMW Premium Selection digital experience offers a wide selection of pre-owned vehicles from the BMW portfolio. From now on, prospective customers in the BMW Premium Selection range will also be able to use the BMW Engage platform to initiate the financing pre-approval process.

With the BMW Engage platform, they can calculate the monthly instalment, generate a quotation, submit an application and obtain pre-approval. The fully-digitalised financing application platform enables customers to tailor the financing of their vehicle to their own needs, and to apply through a contactless process from the comfort of their own home  or office.

“When BMW Engage was introduced early this year, it was a reverberation of our commitment to our loyal customers to continue delivering the Premium Ownership Experience – no matter the distance. The digital feature became a timely and necessary solution for customers during that period of physical divide at the height of the pandemic, and it continues to further enhance their purchasing journey,” said Tobias Eismann, MD of BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia.

“As we enter a new normal, we are proud to extend BMW Engage to the pre-owned vehicle segment by expanding its coverage to the BMW Premium Selection portfolio. At the same time, we are also proud that through this, we are able to extend another avenue for customers to join us in our ongoing efforts to assist the B40 community in attaining the highest level of safety for their children while on the road, via the BMW Safety 360° subsidy programme,” he added.

Covid-19
Fighting COVID-19 is our joint responsibility. Protect yourself and others: make these 6 simple precautions your new habits.

In the motorsports world, specifically the rallying side, Rauno Aaltonen is known as the ‘rally professor’, but too much theory eventually spoils even the happiest of experts. He has had to spend the past 8 months at home in his Finnish homeland due to the applicable lockdown regulations. No excursions on the rally slopes, no trial of strength in historical races, no practical courses with enthusiastic students… very boring.

Aaltonen is now 82 years old, but his impressive level of fitness still allows him to grapple with the steering wheel. Never before, he says, has he had to do without driving for as long as in the pandemic year 2020. And, no, he was really not made for retirement.

Rauno Aaltonen Classic Mini 2020

A special present for an old friend
Loyal friends at MINI thought of what exactly would against such boredom, and came up with the idea of a special kind of pre-Christmas present. It was clear what the experienced rally driver and long-time companion of the British brand was missing most – it wasn’t just a package laced up, but also a ‘sledge’ set in motion.

A closed vehicle transport trailer containing a classic Mini was hooked up to a modern MINI Cooper S Countryman ALL4 which had the destination of Rovaniemi set into its navigation system. That’s a city in Finland and besides being the place that Aaltonen stays, it is also known globally as the ‘official home of Santa Claus’.

Rauno Aaltonen Classic Mini 2020

By land to the home of Santa Claus
From Munich, the trailer and the Cooper S Countryman ALL4 initially headed straight for the Baltic Sea, and after a 30-hour ferry ride, made its way for another 14 hours on the roads of Finland, some of which were already snowy in winter.

While Santa would have been preparing to send presents to children all over the world (we’re told he got priority for the COVID-19 vaccine), the present from the MINI team arrived in Rovaniemi which lies almost on the Arctic Circle. With the New Normal, the delivery had to be contactless so upon arrival, the rear of the trailer opened and a classic red Mini – just like the one used by Aaltonen – came rolling out.

The Professor didn’t waste time getting behind the wheel and a  little later, snow was flying in a high arc as the old master roared away drifting on an extensive tour through deeply snow-covered Finnish forests. The forced break was finally over and he was finally able to ‘play the piano with his feet’ again.

“Rauno has given us so many moving moments in almost 60 years. Now is the perfect moment to give something back,” said Bernd Korber, Head of the MINI brand.

Rauno Aaltonen Classic Mini 2020

Rauno Aaltonen Classic Mini 2020

Aaltonen and Mini
The relationship between Aaltonen and the British brand goes back to 1961. At that time, the Finn had just become national rally champion in his home country and was determined to take on the challenge of the famous Monte Carlo rally. He chose the Mini to enter but that first time ended with a spectacular crash.  In January 1963, Aaltonen did better in the snow and ice, finishing as class winner and third in the overall standings.

From year to year, the classic Mini and the works team, which Aaltonen was part of, were better and better prepared for the unique requirements of the Monte Carlo Rally. Precise instructions were given by Aaltonen in terms of car set-up, additional equipment and road conditions and even tyre choices for the changing road conditions. “Everything that was allowed and possible within the regulations was also taken into account,” he recalled.

Nevertheless, the great triumph was initially reserved for others. In 1964, Northern Irishman “Paddy” Hopkirk took the first overall victory in the Mini Cooper S, and Aaltonen’s compatriot Timo Makinen achieved the second “trick” the following year.

In 1966, the Mini trio known as ‘the three musketeers’ – comprising Aaltonen, Paddy Hopkirk and Timo Makinen –  finished 1-2-3. However, they were disqualified after a controversial decision by the organisers who found the Mini’s lighting system to be illegal. Finally, in 1967, Aaltonen achieved the long-deserved overall victory at the Monte Carlo Rally. With that he had finally made the Mini a rally legend and on top of that put his stamp on the sport as a whole.

‘Inventor’ of left-foot braking
Aaltonen is considered to be the ‘inventor’ of left-hand braking, which enabled him to keep his right foot on the accelerator pedal even when cornering, while the left foot alternated between the clutch and brake pedal. He called it ‘playing the piano with your feet’.

Rauno Aaltonen is one of the pioneer instructors of BMW’s Driver Training Program which started in 1976. He has helped thousands of drivers in many countries (including Malaysia) to be better and safer.

In addition, the Finn introduced detailed notes on the route and was the first to send ‘ice spies’ ahead to report on the conditions. His meticulous preparation and the ability to vividly explain his rapid driving manoeuvres soon also benefited Aaltonen beyond rallying. He was also invited to be the first chief instructor of BMW Driver Training when it began in 1976 (now known as BMW and MINI Driving Experience).

Tomorrow’s MINI will continue to have its practical minimal footprint but offer yet more interior space and versatility. To preview some of the ideas that MINI designers are exploring, the brand used the BMW Group’s #NEXTGen event to present the MINI Vision Urbanaut concept.

The purist mono-volume design of the Vision Urbanaut gives new meaning to the ‘Creative Use of Space’ approach. In signature MINI fashion, the wheels are positioned at the outer corners of the body, with short overhangs rounding off a compact and agile appearance.

MINI Vision Urbanaut concept (2020)

MINI Vision Urbanaut concept (2020)

In fact, the wheels are used as visual highlights of the concept car. Finished in the colour Ocean Wave, a turquoise blue which sparks associations with the beach and the sound of the sea, the abstract Union Jack profile of the wheels reminds one of the British heritage. Their shape recalls skateboards, further highlighting the car’s nimbleness and non-conformist MINI twist.

Evolution of MINI design elements
The front end represents a clear evolution of two time-honoured MINI design icons – the headlights and radiator grille. Positioned under a milled aluminium structure with slotted openings, the headlights are only visible when switched on. Thanks to their multicolour dynamic matrix design they can display different multi-coloured graphics, which creates a new form of communication between the car and the outside world.

MINI Vision Urbanaut concept (2020)

The enclosed grille itself is octagonal in shape, representing an evolution of the traditional hexagonal form. Since the Vision Urbanaut does not have a combustion engine requiring cooling air, the grille assumes a new function as an ‘intelligence panel’ for automated driving.

As with the headlights, multicolour dynamic matrix rear lights behind milled aluminium covers. The distinctive, convex surfaces also pay homage to previous MINIs and the classic Mini. One small detail – the contour of the rear windows – references the form of the front grille and underscores the car’s stylistic consistency.

MINI Vision Urbanaut concept (2020)

The windows show a pattern in body colour, fading in a gradient from bottom to top. This creates a harmonious transition from the vehicle body to the windows and roof. The pattern also provides a certain amount of privacy without having to darken the windows; the interior remains bright.

Designed from inside out
As an innovative space concept, the Vision Urbanaut was designed from the inside out. The designers created the spacious interior experience before developing the exterior, using floor plans, pieces of furniture plus wooden scale models to provide an indication of size. Over the course of the project, augmented reality was employed to create a digital model, which was then systematically optimised.

MINI Vision Urbanaut concept (2020)

Unusually tall for a MINI, but only 4.46 metres in length, the Vision Urbanaut provides an interior space that can be used in many different ways and offers a whole new ease of movement inside the car.

The interior thus provides the ideal environment in which to go on a journey but is also the aim of the journey. Having arrived at the chosen destination, it can transform into a living room in just a few simple steps. Occupants enter the innovative cabin through a large sliding door in the side of the car. The cutting-edge slide and swivel mechanism is the ideal design for urban driving conditions where space is at a premium. There are no other doors on the driver’s side or front passenger side.

MINI Vision Urbanaut concept (2020)

Extremely variable layout
An extremely variable 4-seat layout provides the basis for the bright interior. The two front seats are designed to rotate, while the backrests for the generously sized seat surface in the rear can be folded manually (left rear seat) and turned around (right rear seat).

MINI Vision Urbanaut concept (2020)

When the car is stationary, the dashboard lowers and the driver’s area becomes a comfortable seating corner – the ‘daybed’. Added to which, the windscreen can be opened upwards when stationary to create a kind of ‘Street Balcony’.

The darker environs of the cabin’s rear section provide a quieter space – the Cosy Corner. This area invites passengers to enjoy some time to themselves. With the door open, it is even possible to sit on the floor. A small integrated table is the car’s centre point, a place where passengers can interact.

The MINI Token is the centrepiece of the Vision Urbanaut’s experience worlds. It is roughly the same size as a worry stone and activates the three preconfigured MINI moments – Chill, Wanderlust and Vibe – when placed in purpose-designed slots in the table.

MINI Vision Urbanaut concept (2020)

MINI Vision Urbanaut concept (2020)

MINI Moments
“MINI sees its future self primarily as an enabler of and companion for unforgettable times – what we might call ‘MINI moments’. The MINI Vision Urbanaut uses three curated MINI moments – ‘Chill’, ‘Wanderlust’ and ‘Vibe’ – to present a wide range of possible usage scenarios,” said Oliver Heilmer, Head of MINI Design.

“The Chill moment, for example, invites you to catch a breath and pause in the here and now. The car becomes a kind of retreat, a haven where you can relax – or work with full concentration – during a journey. Wanderlust is the only MINI moment where the MINI Vision Urbanaut is being driven or driving with automated driving functions. The Vibe moment puts time with other people at centre stage – in every way,” he explained.

The exterior and interior change to reflect the MINI moment at hand. Even the wheels, transparent and illuminated from the inside, change their appearance according to the selected MINI moment.

MINI Vision Urbanaut concept (2020)

All-electric powertrain, of course
Nothing is mentioned of the powertrain but, as would be expected, it is a pure electric drive which would use the BMW Group’s advanced technologies in electrified powertrains. Given more mention is the Vision Urbanaut’s responsible use of resources. As well as maximum space within a small footprint and the all-electric drive system, the Vision Urbanaut is committed to a responsible approach to materials. This is achieved not only by reducing the number of components in the exterior and interior design, but also by enabling dual functions such as the dashboard/daybed.

In addition to the use of recyclates, this also means ensuring that the design is free of chrome and leather while using recycled materials. The dominant material in the interior is knitted textile, and the use of cork on the steering wheel and sections of the floor adds a special touch thanks to its natural feel, and ensures an authentically pleasant interior climate.

For those who are shopping for used cars, there are lots of places to go to. Additionally, there are also websites which have advertisements for used vehicles. However, when buying a second-hand product, there is always the question of the condition of the vehicle which is not fully known. Most used car dealers will take in vehicles, clean them up a bit and perhaps fix minor issues and then offer them for sale. Some may offer a ‘limited warranty’ with a verbal agreement that you can bring back the vehicle if problems develop.

Many vehicle distributors and authorised dealer chains also have their own used car business and where these companies are concerned, greater attention is given to ensuring their offerings are in the best condition possible and almost as good as new. They will carry out a thorough inspection and change parts that are deemed too worn out (especially those relating to safety). And as everything is professionally done, they are willing to certify their pre-owned vehicles too, as well as providing a warranty in some cases.

Dedicated BMW/MINI website for pre-owned vehicles
BMW Group Malaysia’s Premium Selection, its pre-owned vehicle business, has introduced what is described as an industry-first initiative – a wide range of vehicles from the BMW and MINI brands will be presented on a dedicated microsite. These vehicles are offered by various authorised BMW and MINI dealerships around the country. and have
gone through a 360° vehicle check, with any necessary repairs done with Original BMW Parts.

At the time of writing, there are over 300 units available for ‘viewing’ from the comfort of home or office via the digital platform, another approach by the BMW Group in digitalising its touchpoints around the world. There is also a facility for trading in vehicles to get those from the Premium Selection, with competitive trade-in values offered.

Premium Ownership Experience as well
There are attractive, limited time and digital platform-only exclusive offers available. Those who purchase vehicles via the microsite are also entitled to enjoy BMW Group Malaysia’s Premium Ownership Experience which includes:
♦ A Minimum of 12 months BMW Premium Selection Warranty (terms and conditions apply);
♦ 360-Degree Technical and Optical Checks of the vehicle;
♦ Availability of Approved Vehicle and Service History;
♦ Exclusive Financing Offers from BMW Financial Services Malaysia; and

As the biggest model in the MINI range, the Countryman has been an ideal support vehicle for the X-raid Team. This is the team that is currently the incumbent overall winner of the Dakar Rally, that gruelling event which takes place annually.

Dakar dominance
For a decade, MINI and the X-raid Team have taken on the Dakar Rally – with much success. From 2012 to 2015, the X-raid Team achieved overall victory for MINI 4 times in a row. An additional overall success followed in 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic started to hit. This time, the marathon rally covered thousands of kilometres over the sands of Saudi Arabia.

The MINI ALL4 Racing in one of the Dakar Rallies.

With its ALL4 all-wheel drive and robust construction,  the Countryman has already demonstrated its performance in extreme conditions and over the toughest terrain. Now MINI customers can also benefit from the experience of the successful off-road specialists with the MINI Countryman Powered by X-raid.

Chassis modifications
The MINI Countryman Powered by X-raid is a truly authentic vehicle, epitomising not simply the flair of 5 victories in the Dakar Rally but also the technology that contributed to these triumphs. The chassis modifications of this 5-door model are derived directly from rally sport experience. There’s a significant increase in ground clearance, and particularly resilient wheel rims and tyres with higher flanks as prominent features of the upgrade.

2020 MINI Countryman Powered by X-raid

The X-raid Team is familiar both with the features of the Countryman that are specific to the model and with the tough conditions besetting competitors and materials alike in endurance rallies. The know-how is used not only for the development of the winning vehicles but also into continuously optimised preparation of the service vehicles.

One thing that was learnt was that increased ground clearance and measures to avoid flat tyres are vital. This enables the service vehicles of the team to travel along tracks with countless potholes and sharp-edged rocks that are typical of the Andean highlands between Argentina and Chile. The same conditions were also found in the burning deserts of Saudi Arabia.

More off-road capability
Increasing the ride height of the car and the large diameter for the wheel rims and tyres easily raise the ground clearance for the Countryman by up to 40 mm. As a result, the fording depth and the ramp angle are significantly better than the standard cars.

The wheels developed specially for rallying provide effective protection against tyre damage. A robust rim ring ensures that it is not necessary to change the entire wheel if damage is sustained on rocky ground. It also creates a powerful visual impact and masks the high tyre flanks.

In place of an internal combustion engine is a synchronous electric motor developed by the BMW Group. The front-axle electric motor generates 135 kw/184 hp, drawing energy from a 12-module T-shaped battery pack with a net capacity of 28.9 kWh. Peak torque is 270 Nm which is available from the moment the car moves off, providing zippy performance with a claimed 0 to 100 km/h time of 7.3 seconds.

Up to 270 kms of range
With a single-speed transmission and integrated differential, the MINI Electric First Edition can reach a claimed maximum speed of 150 km/h and depending on driving conditions and style, travel for up to 270 kms on a fully-charged battery pack.

Recharging a fully empty battery pack requires approximately 36 minutes to reach 80% capacity when recharging at a DC charging station. Similarly, the MINI Wallbox Plus provides an 80% charge in just two and half hours. At home, recharging can be done in 12 hours using a household power supply.
