Daihatsu has had a long presence in the Malaysian market which goes back to the 1970s when it began marketing the Charade hatchback. It was especially strong in the compact car segment and also had popular 4×4 models. Although its involvement in the establishment of Perodua saw it giving up its passenger vehicle sales in Malaysia, it continued to be active in the light commercial vehicle sector.
Last year, its Gran Max remained as the country’s bestselling pick-up/panel van model in the light commercial vehicle segment (below 2 litres). A total of 1,190 vehicles was sold nationwide, a volume that Daihatsu (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (DMSB) was pleased to achieve as conditions were challenging due to the auto industry being affected by supply chain disruptions and economic slowdown.
The Toyota Hilux has been picked for the 2022/2023 International Pick-Up Award, joining the previous winners which were the Volkswagen Amarok and Ford Ranger (both winning on two occasions), and the Nissan Navara. The award was given by the same organisation that picks the International Van of the Year (since 1992). Every other year since 2009, it has also been picking the International Pick-Up as these vehicles are also used for business purposes like vans.
“As a multi-functional vehicle produced and sold globally, both the product and marketplace continue to evolve with many brands setting high standards in performance, safety, driver and passenger comfort,” explained Jarlath Sweeney, Chairman of the International Van of the Year Award jury which has representatives from 25 European countries.
As with the nominated vans, eligible trucks were nominated and then assessed by the expert panel at a specially organised group test. For the latest award, the event was held in Croatia in early October. The performances of the vehicles were closely matched, and it was the Toyota Hilux that finally emerged victorious just ahead of the Isuzu D-Max, with the Jeep Gladiator third.
Commenting on the Hilux winning the 2022/2023 award, Didier Gambart, Vice-President of Toyota Motor Europe Sales, Marketing & Customer Experience, said: “With more than 50 years heritage, the Hilux has always stood for outstanding Quality, Durability and Reliability as well as very capable off-road performance. Now with the new Hilux, we have expanded the engine line-up with a new 2.8 D that offers even more refinement and power capability, allowing us to meet the needs of customers willing not only a workhorse, but also a leisure vehicle. So this award is for us a recognition of all the inherent qualities of Hilux, with even more capabilities.”
Sold all over the world
The Hilux is sold in almost every country on the planet and being the bestselling model in its segment in many countries. It has been assembled and sold in Malaysia since the first generation which was introduced in 1968. With its proven durability and reliability, the model has been very popular in East Malaysia, especially with those in the logging industry who venture deep into the jungles. In fact, it is so popular that its name is used to refer to any pick-up truck!
When the regulations changed in Malaysia in the late 1990s to allow private use of pick-up trucks (they could only be registered for commercial use before), the Hilux also underwent a change in image to become more ‘lifestyle-oriented’. The interior was more comfortable and equipped like a passenger car with many convenience features – and even air-conditioning. Safety levels were also improved as the vehicle was being driven more on roads than off-road by many owners, and cruising speeds were higher.
The IMV project
In 2004, the Hilux had its most significant change as the new 7th generation was the outcome of the Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) project. It was developed as one of the 3 different model lines – with the Fortuner SUV and Innova MPV being new – on a single platform and for the first time, production and almost all development was done outside Japan.
Toyota developed optimal production and supply systems on a global scale, with production at three production hubs – in Thailand, South Africa and Argentina. The vehicles from these hubs were exported to other markets in completed form (CBU) or as completely knocked-down (CKD) units for local assembly in countries like Malaysia.
Bestselling pick-up in Malaysia
The 7th generation was introduced in Malaysia in 2005 and has been the bestselling pick-up truck in the market for over 15 years. The current range is available in 5 variants with a choice of turbodiesel 4-cylinder engines with 2.4-litre and 2.8- litre displacements, and 6-speed automatic or manual transmissions.

It’s been a while since the pick-up truck segment saw a new competitor appearing. Although there have been some models from China and India purely for commercial use, there have been few targeted at the larger ‘lifestyle’ market that was born in the late 1990s when the regulations on ownership changed.
Now Angka-Tan Motor Sdn Bhd (ATM) will challenge the status quo with its new Vigus Pro from Jiangling Motors Company Ltd (JMC). Unlike other pick-ups from China, the Vigus Pro is stylishly designed and equipped like a passenger car. It is a full-fledged truck with 4×4 and the load-carrying capabilities if needed.
Assembled locally
ATM is not testing the market and seems to have enough confidence to jump straight in with the new model by committing it to local assembly. As ATM is affiliated with the Tan Chong Group, it is only natural that the vehicles will be assembled at Tan Chong’s plant. In this case, it is the younger one in Serendah, just off the North-South Highway after Rawang, Selangor. This is also where most of the Nissan models are assembled.
For now, the Vigus Pro is available in just one variant which is priced from RM98,888 (without insurance) in Peninsular Malaysia. It will be sold through a network of dealerships which presently number 13, with an equal number of aftersales outlets also established. A warranty of 3-years or 100,000-km (whichever comes first after registration) is provided.
Speaking at today’s launch, Tan Keng Meng, CEO of Warisan TC Holdings Bhd and Executive Director of ATM, said: “The JMC Vigus Pro is a stylish and versatile pick-up truck developed with premium engineering. Whether it’s for work or play, the Vigus Pro is ready to meet the demanding requirements of pick-up truck users in Malaysia after proving itself as the second best-selling pick-up truck in the Chinese market.”
Bold, distinctive looks
The styling of the Vigus Pro is certainly bold and distinctive, and it should stand out in a crowd of pick-ups. It has all the modern design elements like slim headlamps, LED daytime running lights and 3D taillamps. A sports bar in fitted behind the double cab and incorporates the third brake light.
Size-wise, it’s about the same as the Toyota Hilux, which has been the market leader for years. It has a bit more width, which could mean a bit more comfort within. It has traditional construction, meaning body-on-chassis, with the ladder frame chassis providing durability.
Ford-based TDCi engine?
While most of the vehicle has been developed by JMC, the Puma engine appears to have Ford involvement. It even has a ‘TDCi’ badge on it, which would be familiar to Ford Ranger owners. Ford is in the picture because the American carmaker has had a share in JMC since the mid-1990s, so there would be some technology-sharing and engines may be among them.
The engine in the Vigus Pro is a 2-litre unit with high-pressure common-rail fuel injection system and a variable geometry turbocharger and intercooler. It develops 141 ps/340 Nm and is mated to an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission with manual shift option and paddle shifters. The fuel consumption claim is pretty good at 12.8 kms/litre which should give a range of almost 900 kms with the 68-litre fuel tank.
Full-fledged 4×4 BorgWarner system
The Vigus Pro has a transfer case to direct power to the front and rear axles. The 4×4 system comes from BorgWarner, one of the leading companies in drivetrains. There are High and Low ranges as well as 2WD which can all be selected with an electronic rotary dial – no more having to struggle with a secondary lever. The rear axle is also fitted with an Eaton limited-slip differential (LSD) lock for better traction in very slippery conditions.
Additionally, there’s Hill Descent Control which is like having an experienced off-road driver handle driving downhill (which is not always easy in off-road terrain). The system maintains a safe speed by applying brakes when necessary and also adjusting engine power. All the driver has to do is watch the ground ahead and steer to avoid obstacles.
Other assistance features include Hill Start Assist, ABS with Electronic Brake-Force Distribution and Electronic Stability Program with Traction Control. So in as far as active safety is concerned, the Vigus Pro is comparable to an average passenger car of today.
To ensure that it appeals to its target customers, ATM has specified a high standard for the cabin. There’s a leather-wrapped multi-functional steering with steering controls for the infotainment system, cruise control and voice calls via Bluetooth connection. The infotainment system has an 8-inch colour touchscreen which also displays real-time images from the reverse camera.
First fleet customer
The first major customer to order the new model is Mayflower Car Rental Sdn Bhd, which will take 30 units of the Vigus Pro to add to its fleet of over 2,800 vehicles. The 30 units are about a tenth of the total number ATM expects to sell in the remaining months of 2021.
Before they became the ‘lifestyle’ machines of today, pick-up trucks have traditionally been workhorses. They have been used in worksites, in the jungle and anywhere ordinary vehicles could not go. Because of such a role, they were usually basic with minimum convenience features as the things that mattered to customers were performance, capability and of course, durability and reliability.
That image has long been dispelled by manufacturers such as Isuzu, specialists in pick-up trucks and light commercial vehicles. When the transition occurred from being purely for business use to a more dual-purpose role, Isuzu was ready to offer vehicles with better comfort and convenience – without sacrificing the core strengths.
The latest third-generation Isuzu D-Max is an excellent example of this evolution. Those who remember the first D-MAX that appeared in Malaysia 18 years ago will know best just how much change has taken place in the model. The Isuzu DNA has been retained but it is now a bold and stylish vehicle with even better performance and technologies.
Because of its dual-purpose role, manufacturers of pick-up trucks typically develop a variety of versions with different powertrains and drivetrains to suit different needs. Joining the D-MAX range in Malaysia today is a new variant – the D-Max Auto Plus 4×2. The 4×2 drivetrain means it has only rear-wheel drive.
According to Isuzu Malaysia, only 28% of pick-up truck users in this country frequently make use of their vehicle’s 4×4 system. These could well be the ones who use it in its original role in off-road conditions where 4×4 is helpful. For the rest, the vehicle might be used as daily transport to work or even just a weekend vehicle for recreation.
Less weight, less complexity
While 4×4 is useful, it also means additional weight with additional hardware which a 4×2 does not need. The less complex drivetrain, with just a propeller shaft to the rear axle lowers means lower kerb weight and there’s also lower rolling resistance. Maintenance requirements are also less, so for those who do not really need 4×4, this variant would be ideal.
By not having the transfer case, front differential and ancillary drive system, the D-Max Auto Plus 4×2 weighs 1,830 kgs, a difference of 85 kgs compared to the 4×4 variant and about the weight of an average adult.
Based on similar specifications as the D-Max Standard 4×4 Auto variant, the D-Max Auto Plus 4×2 is powered by the latest 1.9-litre RZ4E-TC 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine that produces a 150 ps/350 Nm. The engine has impressive performance despite its smaller displacement than other pick-ups. Power delivery to the rear wheels is via a 6-speed automatic transmission with ratios identical to the 4×4 variant. However, the tuning has been matched to exploit the engine’s dynamic performance characteristics, in particular, its flat torque delivery and flexible throttle response.
The Isuzu Dynamic Drive Platform supports the vehicle and offers good stability and excellent flex resistance, making it a very capable vehicle regardless of load. To be able to have a superior payload capability, the standard suspension rating is specified for the double wishbone set-up up front and 3-leaf semi-elliptical springs in the rear.
Safety systems like a car
The pick-up truck has not only evolved in features and performance but also has much better safety than the earlier generations. The driver of today’s D-MAX has ABS and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution for assured and stable braking as well as control, along with Brake Assist to boost braking pressure when needed. The vehicle even comes with Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control which will help maintain stability on slippery surfaces, especially corners. In off-road conditions (yes, a 4×2 can also go off-road), the driver can get help from Hill Start Assist) and Hill Descent Control as well as a Brake Override System.
For those who find the length of a pick-up truck intimidating, especially when reverse parking, there are reverse sensors in the rear bumper to help. These provide audible assistance to the driver, complemented by a 4-zone graphic in the instrument panel to indicate the location and distance to obstacles. So there’s no more guesswork when parking and no stress either.
Manufacturers used to give less attention to safety where pick-up trucks were concerned but that is not the case today. The construction and safety systems are also comparable to passenger cars and in the case of the latest D-MAX range which ASEAN NCAP has crash-tested, the findings warrant the maximum safety rating of 5 stars.
Comfortable and safe double cab
Inside the double cab of the D-Max Auto Plus 4×2, the seats have a woven-texture fabric that is both hard-wearing and easy to clean. The seats are generously-proportioned with ample support for comfort over long periods. The driver’s seat can even be manually adjusted 6 ways to suit just about any body shape.
For the safety of everyone on board, all seats in the D-Max are designed to offer whiplash protection while ISOFIX mounts are available in the rear seats for compatible childseats. All 5 occupants get inertia reel 3-point seatbelts and if one is not in use but there is an occupant, there will be an audible and visual reminder.
The D-Max Auto Plus 4×2 is clearly not a ‘low-cost’ version which usually means minimum features and equipment. It comes with a leather-wrapped steering wheel that has audio and phone controls as well as switches to manage the views on the 4.2-inch colour display in the instrument panel. The instrument panel has an e-LUMAX display that makes it easy to read in all lighting conditions.
The 7-inch multimedia system has touchscreen convenience and connectivity options such as USB, Bluetooth, wifi, MirrorLink, Miracast, Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay so it will be possible to interface most smartphones with the system. Power for devices can be obtained from a 12V 120W plug-in power socket up front and one USB port each for front and rear users.
“In these challenging times, the new Isuzu D-Max Auto Plus 4×2 1.9L brings a new level of relief by offering affordability and capability in a well-appointed and stylish package. This new D-Max variant that we are introducing today will be the sole 4×2 offering in its class that comes with an automatic transmission,” said Kenkichi Sogo, Chief Operating Officer of Isuzu Malaysia.
The new D-Max Auto Plus 4×2 can be booked from today, with deliveries beginning from early November 2021. For the Peninsular Malaysia market, it is priced from RM100,999.20 without insurance. Customers can choose from 5 colour choices and the standard warranty is 5 years or a maximum of 150,000 kms.

Angka-Tan Motor Sdn Bhd (ATM), a subsidiary of Warisan TC Holdings Berhad, has been appointed as the distributor of the Vigus Pro 4×4 pick-up truck made by Jiangling Motors Co., Ltd (JMC). This follows the signing of a Vehicle Technology Licensing agreement between the two companies in July last year.
Under the agreement, ATM has the sole right to manufacture, assemble and sell the JMC Vigus Pro 4×4 pick-up truck and related parts and components in Malaysia. For assembly, ATM would naturally use Tan Chong Motor Assemblies, which has already begun assembling the first batch of vehicles.
“We are pleased to announce that after more than 12 months of hard work, Angka-Tan Motor, in collaboration with Jiangling Motors Co., Ltd, is ready to introduce an exciting contender in the popular pick-up segment. The stylish and technologically advanced JMC Vigus Pro 4×4 pick-up truck has proven its mettle in the Chinese market and we can’t wait to share this new product with pick-up fans across Malaysia,” said Tan Keng Meng, CEO of Warisan TC Holdings Bhd.
“As a leading manufacturer and exporter of light commercial vehicles in China, we are thrilled to offer Malaysian consumers a versatile yet attractive pick-up truck engineered with the latest technologies. JMC has been standing as the second best-selling brand in the pick-up segment in China for many consecutive years. We would like to congratulate Angka-Tan Motor’s appointment as the official distributor of the JMC Vigus Pro 4×4 and to also express our appreciation to Warisan TC for their support in making this a reality,” said Xiong Chunying, President of Jiangling Motors Co., Ltd.
2-litre turbodiesel with 8-speed transmission
The Vigus Pro is powered by a 2-litre 4-cylinder VGT turbodiesel engine which has an output of 141 ps/340 Nm with claimed consumption of 12.8 kms/litre. Its drivetrain consists of an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission and BorgWarner 4WD System with High and Low ranges, as well as an Eaton Rear Differential Lock.
For safety, there are active systems such as Bosch ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Traction Control, Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control, and for safer reversing, a rearview camera is provided.
ATM plans to offer the Vigus Pro 4×4 at 13 sales and service outlets nationwide. Prices and specifications of the vehicle will be released later this month. Aftersales support is assured by a nationwide service network offering dedicated mobile service and 24/7 Res-Q response, backed by the resources of Tan Chong Group.
In the meantime, display units are available at ATM’s flagship showroom in Klang, Selangor. Bookings are also being accepted by authorised dealers which can be found at the JMC Malaysia website or by calling 03-3359 6068.
Despite the difficult market conditions that affect the auto industry, demand for new vehicles continues although perhaps not as strongly as usual at the moment. However, for Isuzu Malaysia, the D-MAX has been showing strong demand with orders for the pick-up truck rising by over 100%. This mirrors the situation in other markets where the vastly-improved model has been launched.
Since being launched in April this year, the third generation of the D-MAX has seen average monthly bookings of over 1,200 units. With the previous generation, Isuzu Malaysia received around 500 bookings each month. According to Isuzu Malaysia’s Chief Operating Officer, Masayuki Suzuki, this trend is identical in such markets as Australia, New Zealand and Thailand where sales growth have also multiplied. Many buyers have been impressed by the sporty and versatile vehicle which has a fresh design, enhanced ergonomics and improved engineering.
“This all-new D-MAX phenomenon that has swept the various markets has been somewhat overwhelming. Needless to say, the attractive design, new and improved features and proven Isuzu reputation contributed significantly towards convincing customers to switch or upgrade to this all-new D-MAX model with its excellent value and a generous suite of features,” he said.
Lower roadtax with 1.9-litre engine size
The 1.9-litre D-MAX Premium with automatic transmission has been the most popular choice, accounting for close to 36% percent of the bookings. Although its 1.9-litre turbodiesel engine, fully compatible with Malaysia biodiesel, has a displacement which is the lowest in the market yet, the actual output is comparable to bigger engines. The engine size also makes the D-MAX popular especially to those in Peninsular Malaysia as the annual roadtax is significantly lower. In fact, 61% of overall sales have been in Peninsular Malaysia, a reverse of the traditional 60:40 balance where East Malaysia absorbed a bigger share of the vehicles.
D-MAX X-Terrain – the flagship truck
The new flagship model – the X-Terrain – powered by an improved 3-litre turbodiesel engine that offers significantly more refinement and performance. It accounts for some 17% of the total D-MAX and, despite the higher roadtax applicable, more than half of all the X-Terrain sales have come from Peninsular Malaysia.
Passenger car features in comfortable cabin
Part of the reason, apart from having comparable features to a passenger car, is the comfort and refinement in the cabin. The superior handling both on and off road also make it particularly popular with lifestyle buyers. And safety too is not forgotten as Isuzu has provided Advanced Driving Assistance Systems to help the driver avoid accidents or reduce the effects of collisions if they cannot be avoided.
While the all-new Isuzu D-Max has made inroads into the lifestyle segment with its appealing new design and ergonomics, 81% of new owners have stated that they would utilize their trucks for both work too, underlining the inherently robust nature of Isuzu products.
“The response to this new model has been extremely positive considering the limited opportunities `prospects have had to fully experience the new model due to the strict movement controls and safety protocols. Our current aim is to ensure the smooth, safe and timely delivery of vehicles to our customers despite the various administrative and logistical concerns faced domestically and globally,” said Mr. Suzuki.
To find out more about why the latest D-MAX is a true game-changer and the variety of variants available to suit different requirements and budgets, visit the Isuzu D-MAX website at pickuptruck.isuzu.net.my or their Facebook page.
Although there are a number of choices, the Toyota Hilux has been dominant in the regional pick-up truck market for many years. However, in some markets like Thailand (the second largest truck market in the world), it faces a strong challenge from the Isuzu D-MAX. The numbers can be close in some months, which has encouraged Isuzu to try harder and offer a better product to win more customers.
It has done this with the new third generation and Malaysia is the fifth country to launch this latest generation which made its debut in Thailand. We understand that its arrival in Malaysia is earlier than what was expected. The Chief Operating Officer of Isuzu Malaysia’s Light Commercial Division, Masayuki Suzuki, said that the fast-tracked launch of the all-new D-MAX was made possible through the support of Isuzu Motors Ltd that views Malaysia as a strategic market.
“We are extremely thrilled that this impressive all-new Isuzu D-MAX has been made available in Malaysia much earlier than expected. It stands as testament to the strong commitment from Isuzu Motors towards ensuring that the Malaysian market enjoys the latest selection of choice Isuzu vehicles,” he said.
Powertrain choices – 1.9 litres or 3.0 litres
It is available in single or double cab bodystyles and powered with a choice of two turbodiesel 4-cylinder commonrail engines – the award-winning RZ-4E 1.9-litre powerplant or a revised 4JJ-3TCX 3-litre engine. Pricing of the seven variants available is between RM88,599 to RM141,938 (excluding insurance).
Strong road presence with sportiness
While undergoing a full model change, the overall appearance of the new D-MAX retains many of the styling elements that identify it as an Isuzu product. Developed on a design theme of bold and sporty, it continues to have a strong road presence while presenting a more athletic and dynamic stance.
The large unitary bumper design improves airflow and minimizes the coefficient of friction, thanks to the lessons learned in the same wind tunnel that shaped Japan’s famed Shinkansen bullet trains. To further improve aerodynamics and also improve wet-weather visibility, aerofoil wipers are fitted in the X-Terrain model. These wipers can be manually or automatically operated and feature the washer nozzle integrated into the wiper arm, providing a smoother and cleaner wash.
The overall dimensions have been increased with a 30 mm longer wheelbase and to further achieve the sleek silhouette, the bonnet height has been raised 15 mm while the door sill has also been raised 20 mm. The roof line has been lowered by 10 mm giving the vehicle its sporty profile. With the increased wheelbase, cabin access is easier through the larger rear door opening that has been increased by 25 mm.
Cabin spaciousness is improved in almost every aspect with better seating comfort for the rear passengers. They also get cool air delivered to them through dedicated vents and can recharge their devices with a USB port rated at 2.1A for quicker charging.
Improved interior with latest features
Since the first generation, the D-MAX interior has had a passenger car-like feel and the latest generation enhances this in design and functions. The dashboard has trim edges with an accentuated stitching effect to give a sense of craftsmanship while many of the interior trim accents are finished in satin chrome for a clean, classy look.
The interior designers revised the driving position to be more sporty (with a smaller steering wheel and 8-way power adjustment) and the driver can now reach the centre console more easily as its surface is higher and it is also wider. The automatic transmission selector has been shortened with reduced travel and the selector itself features a lighted gear indicator, the first in its class to boast this premium feature.
Using a large 4.2-inch high-definition TFT-LCD display flanked by the speedometer and tachometer, the Multi Information Display (MID) presents vital information on the vehicle functions. In the D-MAX X-Terrain, it also highlights the various driving situations, particularly the Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) functions and warnings.
Complementing the MID is the new infotainment display in the central console. Featuring a 7-inch WXGA display in the Premium variant and a 9-inch display in the X-Terrain, the system has Apple Carplay and Android Auto as well as Bluetooth connectivity and voice commands can also be used for handsfree operation.
In the past, things like the audio system were very basic in pick-ups but not today. The system in the new D-MAX has 8 speakers with ceiling-mounted tweeters, dash-top tweeters and new 6x9s mounted in the front doors. The good sound quality would certainly make motoring more enjoyable.
The seats in the D-MAX have been completely redesigned to not only provide better comfort and support but also give greater whiplash protection. The backrest springs use a new design that disperses body pressure more evenly while the cushion has dual density padding with a softer centre section and stiffer bolsters, giving better support without sacrificing comfort. The seat cushion pads also feature Anti Vibration Elastic Comfort foam that can absorb vibrations more quickly than conventional cushion material.
The tailgate is a heavy panel that is partly that way because it is sometimes used to support a heavy load. To lessen the opening and closing effort, there is a Tailgate Assist feature (in the X-Terrain) that uses dampers to soften the opening action and also assist in closing. The sliding cargo tray that has appreciated by many owners is now standard.
Two powertrain choices
The 1.9-litre Blue Power turbodiesel engine made its appearance in the previous D-MAX and has already proven that downsizing is not a disadvantage at all. In fact, it has even better performance, thanks to advanced technologies. But the Isuzu engineers have not stopped making it better and the latest version in the new D-MAX has a new turbocharger to give better response and improved top-end performance.
As for the 4JJ3-TCX engine which has a 3-litre displacement, this has also been improved to deliver extra power but run more efficiently and quietly. It is also said to have greater durability compared to the previous generation engine. The air intake has now been moved from the fender to below the bonnet allowing for ram-air effect and to allow the engine to draw cooler and more dense air.
Customers can choose either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission, depending on the variant. New ratios offer better delivery of power to the ground, capitalizing on the new power characteristics of the engines. The new manual transmissions now feature a ring detent on the gear lever to prevent accidental engagement of reverse gear.
New too is the Terrain Command dial, now positioned on the dashboard for quicker access. Its operation is said to be one of the quickest in the market with switching between 2H and 4H taking only 0.61 seconds (vs 1.94 seconds previously). The X-Terrain also benefits from having a differential lock as standard. Actuation is via a button next to the gear selector and the solenoid activates a dog clutch that locks the rear differential in 4L, sending power equally to its 265/60 R18 rear tyres for added traction. The system automatically disengages when the vehicle exceeds 30 km/h to prevent damage to the drivetrain.
Adding to its off-roading prowess, the D-MAX can easily cross water up to 800 mm deep, which is almost double its previous wading capability. The underside of the vehicle is also better protected with a 1.5 mm steel skidplate up front where the vehicle is most susceptible to damage, a 6 mm steel sump guard to protect the engine and gearbox, and a 5 mm reinforced resin wind deflector for a final layer of protection. These and the ground clearance of 240 mm (for models with 18-inch wheels) contribute to the all-terrain capabilities of the D-MAX.
A better chassis and structure
In areas that cannot be seen, much engineering work has been done to improve the durability and go-anywhere capability of the D-MAX. The tougher chassis is the largest in the 1-ton pick-up segment while the 8 crossmembers – the most among its competitors – help improve torsional rigidity by 20% and longitudinal rigidity by 26%. Greater rigidity is better for driving dynamics and as the structure does not shake so much, the vehicle’s overall durability is improved.
If comparing to the previous D-MAX, drivers will notice it corners with minimal body roll. This is something that is inherent in trucks but the Isuzu engineers have made adjustments to the suspension settings that result in a more dynamic feel that will give confidence during fast cornering.
With the extension of the wheelbase, the engine is positioned further back in the chassis. Not only does this provide more room for the crumple zone, it also places more weight behind the front wheels for better handling. The further benefit is a shorter linkage to the gearbox allowing for more precise and quicker shifts.
To improve durability, the propeller shaft is now made of aluminium which not only saves 4 kgs but also has less inertia, thereby reducing torque lash resulting in longer life for the drivetrain. To further reduce unsprung weight, the rear suspension now has 3 leafsprings instead of the previous four. The ride has also improved with increased travel, newly-designed springs and the repositioning of the shock absorber top mount.
Top-class safety
With a maximum 5-star safety rating from ASEAN NCAP, the new D-Max offers superior protection to the occupants as well as other road users. Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) are available in selected variants and these use a stereo camera and radar to scan the road ahead. Other sensors detect the presence of vehicles in the blind spot, and help the driver to remain aware of possible dangers that can result in an accident.
Besides autonomous emergency braking when necessary (if the driver does not act to prevent a collision), the D-MAX can also offer some degree of autonomous motoring. This is possible by the Adaptive Control which keeps a safe distance from a vehicle in front and can operate right down to standstill, and restart automatically. However, the driver still needs to pay attention and be ready to act when necessary.
Incidentally, the brakes have been upgraded with larger 320 mm diameter and 30 mm thick disc rotors up front while the rear drums have increased swept area to provide better all-round performance, improved heat dissipation for longer service life and quieter performance.
The length of a pick-up truck can be daunting for many people, especially those new to using such vehicles. Isuzu makes it less stressful when parking with not only a rearview camera but there is also Rear Cross Traffic Alert to help when reversing out of a parking bay. If a vehicle is approaching from either side, the driver will be alerted.
Remote Start used to be a feature that, in movies, was for the owner to start the engine from a distance in case there was a bomb under the car. However, in the real world, such a feature is used for something much less fatal. In the D-MAX, it can be used to start the engine and by doing so, the air-conditioner can also be activated to cool down the cabin. So when you get in, things should be cooler and more comfortable. In the event the owner forgets the engine has been started, it will automatically shut down after 10 minutes. Of course, while it is running, the doors remain locked unless the owner (with the remote control key fob) opens the doors.
“The all-new Isuzu D-Max has made scores of new fans in the markets it has been introduced in and I believe that the same will happen here in Malaysia. This new model evokes a new level of interest in owning and driving a pick-up truck and I am confident that those who take delivery of this new D-MAX will be very satisfied,” said Mr. Suzuki.
For more information on the new D-MAX visit www.isuzu.net.my or any authorised dealership in Malaysia.
Over the past year, with lockdowns forcing many people to stay home and still have to work, some have found motorhomes useful for getting around, treating them as mobile offices for certain situations. Nissan’s designers may have picked up on this trend and have developed an office on wheels with its NV350 van.
For the remote working lifestyle
Referred to as the Office Pod concept, it offers dual purpose functionality that will make the remote working lifestyle more enjoyable. The customised van incorporates a ‘pod’ that is a workspace, complete with everything needed to get a job done – including a coffee station. Ambient edge lighting provides relaxing illumination and the floor is of polycarbonate so you can see the ground below (perhaps to feel ‘connected’ to the outside world).
While its name has ‘office’ in it, the concept vehicle can also be used for recreational purposes. The pod can slide further out so you can sit in the open even when it rains, or go on the roof which has a balcony.
For journeys away from the highway too
The NV350 Office Pod also has some exterior modifications which allow the vehicle to be driven a bit further off the highway if desired. Extra overfenders protect the bodywork from flying stones, while a simple stairway can be neatly tucked in the sliding door opening.
Similar concept in 2007
This year’s concept vehicle for the Tokyo Auto Salon follows the concept that was used in 2007 two years before the NV range of light commercial vehicles was introduced. Nissan displayed a NV200 Concept at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show which was presented as a ‘smart business tool of a new generation’. It had a customisable cargo area housing a pod that could be configured for different business needs.
The display vehicle was intended for use by a professional ocean photographer. The work area was equipped with a remote control panel for a spider camera, as well as equipment for organising and editing photographs and images while on assignment.

Pick-up trucks used to be just workhorses, vehicles that were bought for business purposes and therefore did not need much by way of features, comfort or performance. They were also priced cheaply because they didn’t have the luxuries of a passenger car. When the regulations in Malaysia changed in the late 1990s to allow private registration of such vehicles, their popularity rose but the new group of people who bought pick-ups wanted the comforts of their passenger cars. So the manufacturers began to add more and more car-like features and even safety systems comparable to passenger cars.
However, at the entry-level end, businesses still wanted a workhorse, something tough and capable in rough conditions to do hard work. And they naturally wanted a low price since they would buy many units. This led to companies offering variants that were fairly simple with basic specifications and even the drivetrain was 4×2 (rear wheel drive only), saving cost and weight and also having lower consumption.
To cater to this end of the market, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) imported the Mitsubishi Triton Lite from Thailand in 2008, in the process introducing the low-rider version to Malaysia. The low-rider pick-up truck is lower and that makes loading more convenient. As mentioned earlier, being intended for the entry-level end, the Triton Lite was priced low and also equipped minimally (though not as spartan as the earlier pick-up trucks).
The Triton Lite found its own niche in the market and as generations changed, MMM maintained the variant in the Triton range. Today, the company presented an updated version – now called the Triton Quest – to the media which has freshened looks with the distinctive Dynamic Shield front end. Though this variant has been around since the new generation was launched, the new looks now make it a workhorse that also looks good enough for use as personal transport. Those who want to enhance the looks can obviously install accessories (especially since they have saved money by choosing the cheapest Triton variant).
Under the bonnet is a 2.5-litre commonrail turbodiesel with an output of 110 ps/200 Nm, with power delivery going only to the rear wheels (4×2) through a 5-speed manual gearbox. While 4×4 is desirable, if the vehicle is mainly used on hard surfaces, 4×2 is not that disadvantageous.
MMM highlights the massive 970 kgs of load capacity of the Triton Quest and the cargo deck floor area as being the largest in the low-rider category. In spite of the large area, the cabin is still spacious, thanks to the J-Line profile which allows for good rear room. There’s also additional storage space in a compartment that cannot be seen as it is under the rear seats.
Features-wise, the latest Triton Quest can be said to be generously equipped for the asking price. Safety features and systems such as dual front airbags and ABS with EBD are present and occupant protection is assured by the strong RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body structure.
Priced at RM79,890 (without insurance), the latest Triton Quest comes with a 5-year (or maximum of 100,000 kms) warranty. It is available only in white but a Pearl White finish. This is unusual as entry-level variants usually come with a basic white colour to minimize production costs.
The Hiace van has been a big seller for Toyota all over the world (to the extent that it has been ‘cloned’ in some countries) but just as with the Liteace before, tougher regulations concerning frontal collisions have been forcing manufacturers to come out with new designs that place a more significant crumple zone in front of the cabin. The traditional window vans have had their engines under the cabin with no ‘nose’ at all but in more developed countries, the lack of an extended front end is no longer accceptable.
The strict regulations have made it difficult in the European market, which is why Toyota collaborated with Peugeot and Citroen 6 years ago to share a van model that it sells as the ProAce. However, Toyota must have been keen to develop its own model too and at the coming Tokyo Motorshow, it will unveil the GranAce as a new model which could be a transitional van for the Hiace range.
Premium MPV
The new GranAce is presented as a premium MPV and measures 5.3 metres in overall length, 1.97 metres wide and 1990 mm high. It sits on a front-wheel drive platform with a wheelbase of 3210 mm and has a trailing-link rigid-axle rear suspension. High rigidity for better collision protection is achieved by the adoption of a ring-shaped frame, which also contributes to a more comfortable ride with stable handling.
The large radiator grille embellished with metallic accents flows seamlessly into the headlamps, which project in vertical and horizontal directions, creating the bold ‘face’ we have come to see in the newer Japanese MPVs. The distinctive LED daytime running lamps complement projector twin-lens LED headlamps that flow into the decorative chrome frame.
There are 2 seating layouts available: the 6-seater with seats in three rows of two, and the 8-seater with seats in 4 rows of two. A black-infused instrument panel creates a luxurious atmosphere, featuring metallic accents on the air-conditioner outlets and wood-grain embellishment in front of the front passenger seat. The meter hood is wrapped in leather and genuine stitching further lends an air of quality.
Better Toyota Safety Sense
Toyota Safety Sense will, of course, be standard and the latest suite has improved sensing functions that make use of the Pre-collision safety system to detect pedestrians during the day and at night, as well as cyclists during the day. Other safety systems include Intelligent Clearance Sonar with Parking Support Brakes (Stationary Objects) that helps reduce and/or mitigate damage from collisions during low-speed driving in parking lots.
The GranAce is intended for Asian markets initially although its positioning within the Hiace family and the future of the Hiace remain unknown. It could become a flagship variant or it could become the basis of the next generation. For now, only one engine is mentioned – the 1GD 2.8-litre clean turbodiesel engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The model will be produced by Toyota Auto Body, a Toyota subsidiary which manufactures selected SUV and commercial vehicles models.
