The Europeans never really liked SUVs because they were seen as big, heavy, consumed excessive fuel and were therefore not good for the environment. Pick-up trucks have been moderately tolerated but generally, they have preferred their small vans and stationwagons if they required something more utilitarian to carry stuff.

Of course, over the past 10 years, European carmakers themselves have also begun offering SUVs but they are more passenger car-like. They are compact and use passenger car platforms and drivetrains, so they are still largely cars with the looks of SUVs. And they are in great demand too…

The Ford Ranger has a go-anywhere capability while also being just as practical for daily transport around the city. Owners of the popularBuilt Ford Tough pick-up truck have been able to create their own adventures and explore many areas of our country with their friends and family.

This May, the Ford Ranger Getaways organised by SDAC-Ford have the mountains as destinations for weekend adventures. There are two events to choose from – A Trip Through Nature at Gunung Jerai on May 6, and Chase the Sunrise in Cameron Highlands on May 27/28. The latter event will be the first overnight trip in this year’s Ford Ranger Getaways series.

The improved version of Ford’s factory Bronco Raptor was approved by Hennessey’s engineering team following cold weather testing in the snowy mountains of Colorado, allowing production and delivery to start at the company’s headquarters in Texas.

The hypercar manufacturer calls it the Hennessey VelociRaptor 500 Bronco Raptor. Yes, that is a mouth full.

Drifting a vehicle is a demonstration of supreme car control that impresses and fascinates. When done by professionals, it is like automotive ballet with the car (or cars) sliding around in precise movements. The skill these drivers possess can be seen when they can drift just centimetres away from a wall as their tyres smoke while fighting for grip.

The skill can be learnt though it takes time and lots of practice. Once a driver has gained sufficient skill and confidence, there are places where drifting can be enjoyed (but should not be done on public roads) and also events where drivers compete.

Even though the new generation of the Ford Ranger made its global debut at the end of 2021 (July 2022 in Malaysia), development work has not stopped to improve it. While the majority of new features and technologies have been introduced with it at launch, Ford still has a few more in the pipeline, it seems.

One of these is an innovative system which makes taking tight turns in off-road conditions much easier. Known as Trail Turn Assist, it will be available with certain Ranger variants, adding to the pick-up truck’s capabilities.

Following on from the alliance between Ford and Volkswagen which has seen the new Amarok for the German carmaker based on the latest Ranger, Ford has now revealed the first of two new models which will use Volkswagen’s MEB platform for battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

The new model, to go on sale later this year for under 45,000 euros (about RM216,000), uses the Explorer nameplate. This name has a long history in Ford’s range and at one time, was the bestselling SUV in the world. Now it is going electric as part of Ford’s reinvention of the Ford brand in Europe. By 2030, Ford aims to have an all-electric portfolio of passenger vehicles.

The pick-up truck was once just for work and regulations (in Malaysia) before the late 1990s did not permit registration for private use. When the regulations changed, Ford was the first to show people the fun side of owning a pick-up truck with its Ranger. Built tough for workhorse duties, the Ranger was also a very capable truck able to travel over difficult terrain.

Today’s Ranger is even more capable but many people don’t realise just how capable, or they do not have an opportunity to take it to its limits. Sime Darby Auto ConneXion, the sole distributor for Ford in Malaysia, can help Ranger owners discover the capabilities of their Ranger at a course specially designed for beginners.

To be held on March 19, the Ford Ranger Getaways M4TREC Beginner 4WD Course offers any Ranger owner the chance to master his or her vehicle. Participants will also gain in-depth familiarity with their vehicle and might even discover some features which they did not realise their Ranger had.
