Ford

Since the late 1990s when the laws on registering pick-up trucks changed and they could be registered for private use, many Malaysians have switched to such vehicles. For many, becoming a truck owner has introduced them to a whole new lifestyle where they can go far off the highway and explore our beautiful countryside.

The Ford Ranger and its more powerful brother, the Ranger Raptor, is among the popular trucks in the market, offering the convenience features of a passenger car and yet being ‘Built Ford Tough’ to be driven over any type of terrain.

Ford Ranger/Raptor Training Experience

The Ranger is certainly a very capable vehicle but not all owners (especially those coming from passenger cars) know how to make use of all its capability. Understanding this, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC) organised a Ranger/Raptor Training Experience to provide them with the knowledge and skills to take their vehicle further.

The Ranger/Raptor Training Experience was held in Sepang, Selangor, on a specially prepared course which gave owners the chance to discover the full capabilities of their trucks. By tackling the challenging obstacles created around the course, the owners gained confidence to be able to pilot their vehicle safely in different types of terrain.

The session was part of the Ford Ranger Getaways program which is a community and experiential platform designed to provide owners with a unique experience of ‘Living the Ranger Life’  through a series of local adventures.

Ford Ranger/Raptor Training Experience

“This is a segment first in Malaysia where customers can make bookings via a digital platform. These specially curated outings aim to offer opportunities for customers, their friends and families to get together and build camaraderie with like-minded individuals while supporting domestic tourism that has been impacted by the pandemic,” said Turse Zuhair, Managing Director, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion-Ford.

Durian buffet coming up next

In June, the Ford Ranger Getaways will offer an off-road durian adventure to Penang. The 2-in-1 off-road course will begin at Ford Juru outlet on the mainland side and the participants will then head to Jeti Batu Musang at Batu Kawan (also on the mainland). There, they will have the chance to test the limits of their Rangers across various obstacles, with guidance from a professional driving instructor. These include water-wading, jungle track driving, light rock climbing and more.

Ford Ranger/Raptor Training Experience

After the 4×4 experience, they will then head to Green Acres Orchard at Balik Pulau, a well-known spot for durians on the island. Following a short tour of the orchard, the participants can then kick back and savour the all-you-can-eat durian buffet and a hearty lunch. The getaway package is priced at RM976 per vehicle (Rangers only, of course) for a recommended maximum of 4 persons per vehicle.

There will also be other destinations for the Ford Ranger Getaways, designed to let owners and their friends experience 4×4 off-roading as well as have an adventure. There is also one special package which will put them behind the controls of an Airbus A320. No, it won’t be a real one, but the simulator is said to give a very realistic experience and the route programmed is over the virtual skies of Kuala Lumpur.

For those who want the real thing, another package lets them become a pilot for a day. They will be in the cockpit of a small aircraft with a professional pilot guiding them and can get an aerial view of the nation’s capital from around 500 metres up under the guidance of a professional pilot.

Over the 100 years that it has been part of the Ford Group, Lincoln has offered luxury models in the same way that Cadillac has done for General Motors. This year, on its 100th anniversary (it was actually founded in 1917), the company is showing how its products will look as it moves ahead in the new era of electric vehicles (EVs).

The new design language which Lincoln cars of the future will use will maintain the core tenets of beauty, human, gliding and sanctuary. “As Lincoln enters the next chapter in our transition to a zero-emissions future, the Lincoln Star Concept will lead the way for our portfolio of fully electric vehicles. It is an excellent example of how we are redefining luxury for the next generation as we work to transform the vehicle into a third space – a true place of sanctuary – for our clients,” said Joy Falotico, President of Lincoln, when introducing the company’s new concept car.

2022 Lincoln Star Concept BEV

The new design language is applied inside and out, with thoughtful design details, connected experiences and clever solutions to create the ultimate sanctuary for customers who travel in the Star Concept.

A study of experiences
“Electrification is removing many traditional vehicle design constraints, allowing us to reimagine what a vehicle can be,” said Anthony Lo, Chief Design Officer, Ford Motor Company. “The Lincoln Star is a study of experiences and themes that push the boundaries of Lincoln design – and it’s just the start.”

2022 Lincoln Star Concept BEV

Relating to the evolved design language of Lincoln, the silhouette is sleek and dynamic, expanded to create a striking effect. Whether stationary or in motion, the concept uses design, light, displays, scents and sounds to create an immersive experience for the occupants. Intelligent technology that enhances comfort, productivity and entertainment is deployed throughout to bring the romance of travel back in a uniquely Lincoln way.

Using light in a modern new way
The designers worked to create harmony throughout by using light in a modern new way. Illuminated crystallines, plus backlit doors, seats and exterior features elevate the architectural space to create the ultimate sanctuary. The new Lincoln star on the fascia lights up like a jewel – greeting clients upon approach while giving new meaning to the Lincoln Embrace welcome sequence.

2022 Lincoln Star Concept BEV

Under the floor, the company’s rear and all-wheel-drive flexible BEV architecture and next-generation Lincoln Intelligence System make possible the new design thinking and connected experiences proposed in the concept. The flexible architecture means engineers and designers will be able to reimagine the additional interior space in new and exciting ways.

Lincoln Intelligence System
The new Lincoln Intelligence System takes the definition of ‘digital assistant’ to a new dimension, enabling experiences such as connected vehicle-to-vehicle and infrastructure capabilities. These would include next-generation driver-assist features such as ‘Help Me See’ and ‘Park for Me’.

2022 Lincoln Star Concept BEV

A reimagined sanctuary
Both in design and colour composition, the interior is uniquely partitioned into first and second-row areas. The entire cabin experience in both rows is premium, with extra-spacious wraparound seating, reclined lounge posture, individual lounge legrests and curated storage for devices and slippers. A luxurious glass beverage chiller is neatly integrated between the back seats.

2022 Lincoln Star Concept BEV

The feeling of spaciousness is enhanced with 3D-printed metal latticework on the A-pillar along the windshield and the D-pillar at the back window of the Lincoln Star Concept – visible from the inside out. These transparent pillars, along with a full skylight with digital shade, invites natural light in to enhance the open, airy feel of the space.

A full-width curved horizontal display creates a digital panorama in which content flows seamlessly into an integrated centre control screen, then into the second-row screen. New materials such as leather and chrome alternatives and several unique finishes work in harmony to create a modern, luxurious experience.

2022 Lincoln Star Concept BEV

Three rejuvenation moods join a new Lincoln Embrace sequence harmonizing audio, scenting and lighting throughout the cabin. A symphonic orchestration with crisp, high-resolution animations on the displays creates an immersive digital sanctuary. Whether stuck in traffic or just enjoying a few quiet moments after work, the rejuvenation moods provide a true sanctuary in a third space:

The three moods are built around the human body’s natural circadian rhythm of morning, day and evening. With the help of connected technology, the moods will offer content updates and ways for the occupants to personalize their settings into the future.

‘Boot’ at the front
The area no longer occupied by a combustion engine is converted into a front storage compartment, helping to liberate more space in the cabin. With electro-chromatic glass that changes from transparent to opaque, the front compartment is instantly recognizable, allowing light in when the car is in motion and darkening to hide stored valuables when parked. Underneath, illuminated first-row floors flow uninterrupted into the interior, creating an airy, open cabin.

A wing-shaped floating instrument panel, inspired by aircraft ailerons, emphasizes horizontal balance and equilibrium, while the Lincoln one-touch pedal is used for easy driving. The interior also features Lincoln Attache, a digital briefcase concept with a hidden compartment in the rear coach door that not only provides safe storage of tablets and laptops, but does double duty as a charge pad for devices and can seamlessly detect incoming wireless content. Finally, a reimagined rear cargo space features a lounge mode that transforms into a cozy, indulgent outdoor seat to bring the destination closer.

Lincoln plans to deliver three new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) which will account for more than half of its global volume, and it will add a fourth model by the end of 2026.

Although your vehicle may have clocked much less mileage in the past two years due to restrictions on interstate travel and general limitations of movements, it still needs to be regularly serviced. Even though the mileage may be low and not reach the usual 5,000 or 10,000-km that many service intervals are set at, manufacturers also have a schedule based on months for low-mileage motorists. This is because although the vehicle is not used much, the oil may deteriorate after some time and need to be changed.

Therefore, regardless of the mileage, you would have to send in your vehicle at intervals of 6 months or a year, depending on the brand and model. This will also allow the service centre to carry out checks to ensure that everything is in good working order as well.

Although there are prescribed mileage intervals for servicing, low-mileage owners should follow the time-based intervals instead.

With the Hari Raya festivities coming up and now that interstate travel is not forbidden, many will be planning to take ‘balik kampung’ to celebrate with loved ones and friends. This makes it even more important to have the vehicle inspected and serviced, if that is due.

In connection with this, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC) has a Raya Aftersales promotion which will be on until May 31, 2022. During the promotion period, Ford vehicle owners can save money on genuine parts as well as services.

“As we settle into a new way of living with COVID-19 in the endemic phase, we must all continue to take precautions to stay safe. With our Ford customers planning to ‘balik kampung’ and travel for the upcoming Raya holidays, we hope this service promotion will help them stay safe on the roads while enjoying more savings,” said Turse Zuhair, Managing Director, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion-Ford.

Save up to 20%
Owners who send their vehicle in for service during the campaign period will enjoy savings of up to 20% on lubricants as well as timing and brake packages. There’s also a 20% discount on selected parts and 10% discount on labour charges for the packages.

Other offers include add-on services such as wheel alignment and balancing which are important not only for tyre life but also safety. Improperly aligned wheels could affect the steering while unbalanced tyres may get worn out irregularly and grip may be affected. Additionally, air conditioning service is also available – which is important to ensure a comfortable journey. SDAC service centres can also provide polishing as well as sanitisation services.

For peace of mind, all vehicles will be given a free 27-point inspection conducted by Ford-certified technicians to ensure their vehicles are in tip-top condition.

Customers who spend a total of RM1,000 and above on any Raya campaign offer and other selected services will receive a free exclusive sports bag. Fee Ford Raya packets will also be available (while stocks last).

Alan Mulally created ‘One Ford’ during his 8-year term as President & CEO of Ford Motor Company, a strategy that reorganised the company and drove it to profitable growth. Jim Farley, who sits in Mulally’s office today, has his own plan which is called ‘Ford Next’, also a transformative move to restructure the company and leverage on all its experience and resources to be a strong competitor in the new industry environment.

Last month, as part of Ford Next, he announced that Ford would create separate business units for products with combustion engines and products with electric powertrains. The former would be known as Ford Blue and the latter called Ford Model e. The two would be distinct but strategically interdependent  businesses. Driving this move is recognition that different approaches, talents and, ultimately, organizations are required to develop different types of vehicles.

A third new development was recently announced to cover autonomous vehicles and new technologies. While the focus is on electrification, autonomous vehicles are nevertheless on the horizon and preparing for them is important. Farley knows that a giant like Ford cannot compete with start-ups that are lean and already focussed on new technologies. So he wants to establish units that can be more agile and responsive and the already existing Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLC (established in 2018) will now become part of Ford Next.

Farley believes in having the right people (and type of people) for the job and legacy approaches won’t work today. The engineers who have, for decades, worked on combustion engines may not be right for electric powertrains so having new units allows them to develop their own workforce of the right sort of people. In this way, development work is expected to be faster and ‘traditional’ methods won’t automatically be used.

There will still be cars like this from Ford with internal combustion engines.

Unlike Jim Hackett, his predecessor who came from an office furniture company, and unlike Mulally who was an aircraft engineer at Boeing, Farley is a car-guy and has had a log association with Ford (though he started in the auto industry with Toyota). So while the future is electric, he has promised that it’s not over for combustion engine vehicles from Ford anytime soon – and with reduced cost and complexity.

Nevertheless, the focus and investments will be on electric vehicles, both passenger and commercial. In Europe, for example, Ford will have a range of 9 electric models by 2024, with a target of selling more than 600,000 EVs in the region by 2026. This will contribute to the global goal of 2 million+ annual production of EVs by 2026.

By 2024, Ford will have a wider range of electric passenger vehicles as well as commercial vehicles (below).,

Like other major carmakers, Ford is also taking steps to ensure supplies of batteries – a crucial item in every EV. It will collaborate with other parties to create one of Europe’s largest commercial vehicle battery production sites in Turkey.

“This is why we have created Ford Model e – allowing us to move at the speed of a start-up to build electric vehicles that delight and offer connected services unique to Ford and that are built with Ford-grade engineering and safety,” said Farley.

Another new unit in Ford Next is Ford Pro which is aimed at commercial customers. In a market crowded with fragmented and consumer-grade products, customers are demanding complete solutions designed to meet the needs of commercial fleet operations. This is where Ford Pro comes in: its role is to help customers who want to transition into electrified vehicles by providing a one-stop shop for fleet operations and investing in key areas of the business. Ford Pro will offer a wide range of charging hardware – from home chargers to large-scale depot charging systems – all backed with integrated installation, software, service and financing.

Knowing that the transition to EVs will not be immediate, Ford Pro makes it easier to manage by providing a single solution for both combustion engine and EV fleet management. According to Ford, commercial customers turnover between 10 -15% of their fleet each year so many will manage a mixed fleet of vehicles for a long time. Ford Pro can therefore help as its customers phase out combustion vehicles and progressively replace them with EVs, supporting with the necessary hardware and services.

You’ve been owning a Ford Ranger for some time, or you’re a new owner who’s just joined the world of trucking… do you want to enjoy your truck to the fullest and do more with it than just being able to carry more durians home? Many truck owners may not be fully aware of  the potential and features of their vehicle which has been built tough and very capable.

For such owners, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion-Ford (SDAC-Ford) has a special program called ‘Ford Ranger Getaways‘ where Ranger owners can enjoy the outdoor lifestyle trucks permit, and also learn more about using their vehicle in off-road conditions.

Designed for Ranger/Ranger Raptor owners
There are various packages during the year and coming up on March 26 is a 1-day guided session with trained driving instructors covering tarmac and off-road driving scenarios. Held in the district of Sepang in Selangor, it is designed for Ranger and Ranger Raptor owners.

During the session, they will learn valuable tips and tricks on seating and steering methods. They will also have hands-on experience navigating around an autocross course on tarmac, a 4×4 off-road course and a ‘Baja course’ that will showcase the true prowess of the Ranger Raptor, Ford’s performance truck. And to show the high performance of the Ranger Raptor, the participants will be taken around the Baja course with the instructors at high speed. Baja is a region in Southern California where desert races have been held for a long time.

Ranger owners will go through the same modules as the Ranger Raptor experience except for a dirt cornering and drifting course in place of the Baja course and a drifting hot lap with the instructors. Training on both days will begin at 8:30 am from the Sepang International Circuit. A Certificate of Completion will be presented to all participants at the end of the day.

50% discount + 1 companion
Owners can enjoy 50% discount on this Sepang training experience, and each participant can also bring along a companion for free. Interested owners are encouraged to sign up quickly for this one-of-a-kind experience as only limited slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Thanks to its renowned strength, engineering capabilities, smart technologies and increasingly luxurious cabin and passenger vehicle features, customers are choosing a Ranger not just for work, but also for play and family. With our new brand experiential programme ‘Ford Ranger Getaways’, we aim to provide a platform for owners to uncover the full potential and versatility of their Rangers through a series of handpicked local adventures,” said Turse Zuhair, Managing Director, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion-Ford.

Ford Ranger Getaways
‘Ford Ranger Getaways’ is the latest offering under the new ‘Live the Ranger Life’ brand positioning that encapsulates the values and persona of the Ranger. The Ford truck, introduced in the late 1990s, changed public perception of trucks and introduced a new lifestyle for Malaysians to enjoy.

Open to all Ranger and Ranger Raptor customers, ‘Ford Ranger Getaways’ covers a multitude of interest categories to cater to Malaysians from all walks of life who want short local adventures, be it on their own, with friends and family or for those who simply want to meet like-minded individuals.

Each getaway has been thoughtfully curated to reflect the diversity of the Ranger lifestyle – from fun city outings and outdoor or off-road excursions to foodie trails and even flying a plane over KLCC.

For the auto industry, this decade is one which will require a major decision to be made on the type of vehicles to produce in future. It is clear that, besides going back to horse carriages, electrification of motorcars is the quickest solution to addressing one of the contributors to climate change. While there are ongoing debates about the actual benefits of electric vehicles (EVs) from a total perspective (including generating the lectricity), it cannot be denied that EVs generate no emissions and that can make a difference to air quality.

The industry has already begun its path to electrification and many have announced targets that will see 100% or almost 100% of the vehicles they produce and sell being fully electric by the end of this decade. But can this full-scale transformation take place globally? Can every country on the planet do away with combustion-engined vehicles and use only electrically-powered ones?

This is something the carmakers are grappling with and as Toyota has said, they do not want to leave any customer behind [by offering only EVs). Other carmakers have also said that they will introduce EVs in markets where conditions are acceptable and offer other solutions for those which cannot afford EVs in the immediate future. This can mean offering hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) which are a bit less costly or try to cleanse the emissions of the combustion engine as much as possible.

Ford’s approach
Ford has announced its approach which will be to cover both the EV segment and the ‘old’ segment where combustion-engined vehicles will still be in demand. It will have two business units in its company as part of the Ford+ plan introduced last May. There will be two distinct, but strategically interdependent, businesses – Ford Blue and Ford Model e – the former focussing on products with combustion engines and the latter to be fully focussed on EVs and have the agility of a start-up.

Driving the change was recognition that different approaches, talents and, ultimately, organizations are required to develop and deliver of electric and digitally connected vehicles and services, while also fully capitalize on the company’s iconic family of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

Ford has over 100 years of experience in manufacturing motor vehicles and it will draw on this vast experience to continue making conventional combustion engine vehicles as well as the new generation of EVs.

“This isn’t the first time Ford has reimagined the future and taken our own path,” said Ford Executive Chairman, Bill Ford. “We have an extraordinary opportunity to lead this thrilling new era of connected and electric vehicles, give our customers the very best of Ford, and help make a real difference for the health of the planet.”

Dedicated EV division in China
The creation of Ford Model e was encouraged by the success of small, mission-driven Ford teams that developed the Ford GT, Mustang Mach-E SUV and F-150 Lightning pickup as well as Ford’s dedicated EV division in China.

“Ford Model e will be Ford’s centre of innovation and growth, a team of the world’s best software, electrical and automotive talent turned loose to create truly incredible electric vehicles and digital experiences for new generations of Ford customers,” explained Ford President & CEO, Jim Farley.

Continuing with iconic models
“Ford Blue’s mission is to deliver a more profitable and vibrant ICE business, strengthen our successful and iconic vehicle families and earn greater loyalty by delivering incredible service and experiences. It’s about harnessing a century of hardware mastery to help build the future. This team will be hellbent on delivering leading quality, attacking waste in every corner of the business, maximizing cashflow and optimizing our industrial footprint,” he said, adding that the company will continue to invest in combustion engines.

Ford’s President stressed that company will continue to invest in internal combustion engines and offer them in some models under the Ford Blue brand.

Ford Model e and Ford Blue will be run as distinct businesses, but also support each other – as well as Ford Pro, which is dedicated to delivering a one-stop shop for commercial and government customers with a range of conventional and electric vehicles and a full suite of software, charging, financing, services and support.

Making ownership experiences better
Back in the ‘dotcom era’ over 20 years ago, Ford was an early promoter of online media for its business. In this decade, Ford Model e also will lead on creating a new shopping, buying and ownership experience for its future EV customers that includes simple, intuitive e-commerce platforms, transparent pricing and personalized customer support from Ford ambassadors. Ford Blue will adapt these best practices to enhance the experience of its ICE customers and deliver new levels of customer connectivity and satisfaction.

The carmaker expects to spend US$5 billion on EVs this year, a two-fold increase over 2021. By 2026, Ford aims to produce more than 2 million EVs annually, which will represent about one-third of the company’s global volume. This is expected to rise to half by 2030, capturing with EVs the same, or even greater, market shares in vehicle segments where Ford already leads.

“This new structure will enhance our capacity to generate industry-leading growth, profitability and liquidity in this new era of transportation,” said John Lawler, Ford’s Chief Financial Officer. “It will sharpen our effectiveness in allocating capital to both the ICE and EV businesses and the returns we expect from them – by making the most of existing capabilities, adding new skills wherever they’re needed, simplifying processes and lowering costs. Most importantly, we believe it will deliver growth and significant value for our stakeholders.”

Following the reveal of the new Ford Ranger last year, Ford has now finally given the new Everest SUV its global debut. While the press materials don’t mention the Ranger, it’s no secret that the two models are essentially shared products, with the Everest being a SUV version of the pick-up. The connection has been important, particularly in Thailand, where it is advantageous to be a truck-based SUV.

2022 Ford Everest

Ford design DNA
For the new Everest, which starts its third generation, the chassis has wider tracks and a longer wheelbase. The styling is that of a modern SUV with the same ‘C-clamp’ headlamps and strong horizontal upper grille bar at the front, now the signature look of Ford’s trucks and SUVs. For the Everest, the front end also has a mix of horizontal and vertical elements. The wider tracks add a muscular image to the vehicle with a more dramatic swell over the wheels.

The new integrated or stand-off roof rails are more than just a design detail as the Everest roof can now support static loads of up to 350 kgs and dynamic loads of up to 100 kgs. This means owners can carry bikes, canoes, a cargo pod or roof-top tent. A universal mounting system allows for addition of a range of accessories.

“We showed customers the Everest at several points during the design process, and their feedback was consistent: They loved the exterior with the strong and rugged design, but they also thought it was sleek and modern,” said Max Wolff, Design Director for China and Ford’s International Markets Group. “They said that the Everest would give them the confidence to go off-road; it looks like a proper SUV.”

Three engine options
Depending on the market, the Everest will be available with turbodiesel and petrol engines. There is a new 3-litre turbodiesel V6 and the proven 2-litre turbodiesel, and from 2023, a 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine. The present generation sold in Malaysia has a 2-litre bi-turbo diesel engine and this is likely to be maintained while the petrol engine would probably also be offered. Ford’s 10-speed SelectShift automatic will continue to be available as well as a 6-speeder.

Besides the 50 mm increase in the track for a more controlled ride on-road, revisions have been made to the damper settings ‘to inject more fun and control’ into the Everest’s ride, on and off-road. There will be two 4×4 drive systems – a 2-speed electronic type (also known as a part-time 4×4) and an advanced, permanent 4-wheel drive system with an electronically controlled on-demand 2-speed electromechanical transfer case with selectable drive modes.

2022 Ford Everest

A rear locking differential is fitted and, in some markets, the Everest will also be available with 2-wheel drive. As with the current Ranger and Everest, the vehicle can move through water up to 800 mm deep.

‘Sanctuary’ in the cabin
While customers told the Ford people that they wanted toughness and capability on the outside and underneath, for the Inside, they wanted a ‘sanctuary’. So the designers put a lot of thought into the function and feel of the interior, taking inspiration from modern homes and bringing in plush materials, premium finishes and ambient lighting all in areas where customers can appreciate them the best.

2022 Ford Everest

The sense of spaciousness is amplified by the full-width dashboard. Access to the third-row seats is much easier, thanks to second-row seats that slide further forward than before. Additionally, all occupants now have places to store their things and depending on the model, charge their devices with power outlets in all three rows (some variants will have wireless charging pads).

Ford’s interior designers prioritised flexible seating in the new Everest so the second-row slides with a 60:40 split seatback and the 50:50 split third row in the 7-seater configuration can be folded at the touch of a button. Importantly, both the second and third-row seats have been designed to fold flat to allow for long loads to be carried safely.

2022 Ford Everest

To stop items falling out of the back opening when the tailgate is up, there is a small lip, affectionately known as the ‘apple catcher valley’, at the rear of the cargo area. The team also created an underfloor compartment for storing small items.

“One of the first things you’ll notice when you get into a new Everest is how quiet it is,” said Wolff. “We’ve all been in vehicles with multiple rows of seats, where you have to twist your head around and almost shout to be heard by passengers in the second or third rows. That’s an issue we wanted to solve for the Everest, so the interior would be a quiet place in which you can easily talk to your family or friends and enjoy the journey together.”

Customer-focused technology
In addition to a more refined and comfortable interior, Ford focused on incorporating the latest connectivity and technology features. 8-inch or 12.4-inch digital instrument panels replace the traditional analogue clusters so it’s a ‘glass cockpit’ now. Additionally, in the middle of the dashboard is a high-resolution touchscreen in either 10.1-inch or 12-inch sizes, running Ford’s latest infotainment system known as SYNC 4A.

2022 Ford Everest

The portrait-orientated screen also is linked to a 360-degree camera with split-view display to make parking easier in tight urban spaces or to assist when negotiating particularly tricky terrain. In addition, the driver can control the new exterior zone lighting system via the touchscreen which means they don’t have to park, work, camp or do anything in the dark.

2022 Ford Everest

Where available, the Everest’s dedicated off-road screen displays vehicle information and a front camera view of the terrain ahead, with predictive overlay guidelines designed to help the driver negotiate obstacles. With a single button press, the driver can view their driveline and diff-lock indicators, steering angle and guides, and vehicle roll and pitch angles. The camera views also help the driver guide the SUV into position to connect a trailer.

Driver-assist technologies
Ford has always treated its SUVs and pick-up trucks the same way where safety is concerned, giving just as much safety technology as its passenger cars. For the Everest, there are new and enhanced driver assist technologies and safety features to take the stress out of driving and help drivers to remain focused.

A new far-side airbag positioned between the driver and front passenger provides additional protection in the event of a side impact. Depending on the variant and the market, the addition of the far-side airbag and dual knee airbags brings the number of airbags up to 9, which cover all 3 rows.

With Active Park Assist 2.0, the new Everest can help the driver fit safely in tight spaces at the press of a button. The system takes care of the steering, gearshifts, acceleration and braking to manoeuvre into parallel or perpendicular parking spaces. It will also steer itself out of a parallel parking spot when prompted.

2022 Ford Everest

The Everest is primarily made in Thailand, along with the Ranger, and is expected to go on sale later this year. As Sime Darby Auto ConneXion has been selling the Everest, it would likely continue with the new generation, perhaps in 2023. If you’re interested in getting the current model, there should be some stocks available. Visit www.sdacford.com.my to locate a showroom for more information.

A new generation of the Ford Ranger may have been announced but it’s not going to be available in Malaysia for a while and in the meantime, for those who want to get a proven pick-up truck, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC) offers a Ford Ranger XLT Plus Special Edition. Priced from RM136,888 (excluding insurance), the Special Edition is now open for booking.

Bold Ford grille
The Ranger XLT Plus Special Edition gets enhanced exterior and interior features that not only differentiate it but also provide extra  convenience. The front end features the Ford Block-Letter Front Grille design that gives a bolder appearance, while more pronounced fender flares add to the muscular image. The sports bar has also been redesigned to freshen the aesthetics.

On the door sills are new illuminated front scuff plates with the Ranger logo. Installed at no extra charge is a digital video recorder (DVR) which is neatly mounted on the top of the windscreen. This high-quality unit has high-definition (HD) recording, wide-angle viewing, night view recording, and a built-in polarised filter (to reduce reflections).

A 32GB memory card is provided for recording and besides capturing videos of journeys, the recordings will prove useful as evidence in the event of an incident to show what actually happened, and who may have been responsible. The DVR can be connected to a smartphone via a Mobile App which is compatible with both Apple iOS and Android.

Proven turbodiesel with 10-speed transmission
As with most of the Ranger variants, this Special Edition uses the 2-litre Single-Turbo diesel engine mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The 180 ps/420 Nm output of the engine can go to either the rear wheels or all four wheels with the robust 4×4 system which can be operated while the vehicle is moving.

Colours available are Absolute Black,  Aluminium Metallic, Arctic White, Lightning Blue and Meteor Grey. As with the entire Ranger line-up, the vehicle warranty is for 5 years, or a maximum of 160,000 kms after registration.

“The Ford Ranger XLT Plus Special Edition is the ideal work-family-play vehicle for a special  breed of drivers – men and women who are business owners and entrepreneurs with a burning  drive to defy all odds in life, every day. They pursue success with a passion for life and are  constantly pushing boundaries. With this new special edition, they can enjoy more exclusivity  while celebrating their achievements,” said Turse Zuhair, Managing Director of Sime Darby Auto ConneXion-Ford.

The Ranger’s tailgate is very easy to close as it has an Easy-Lift mechanism to reduce the effort.

Should you get one now?
Some may feel that getting a model at the end of its life cycle is pointless when a new one is just round the corner. But that’s not always true and there are some benefits too. Some may prefer the current design, and that’s a personal preference. A model in its final years may also have just about everything the engineers and product planners can put in, and the cumulative improvements made over the life of the model. So, in a way, it could be the best of the generation and often, there may also be a reduced price as an incentive.

The public will be able to get a first look at the Ranger XLT Plus Special Edition at Queensbay Mall in Penang where one unit will be on display from today until February 27, 2022. Display units will be in all Ford showrooms nationwide from March 10. To locate a showroom, visit www.sdacford.com.my.

While the Ford Ranger has just entered its fourth generation, its high-performance variant – the Ranger Raptor – is just getting into its second generation. The Raptor suffix, as you would know by now, is what Ford puts on its most powerful variants of the production Ranger and F-150 (and more recently, the Bronco too). These are developed by Ford Performance and have been setting the performance benchmark for pick-up trucks.

With the new generation, the Ranger Raptor gets smarter technology controlling tougher, next‑generation hardware. While raw power is still the name of the game, technology also has a big role in using all the performance available.

“We’ve really focused on delivering a genuine performance truck with the Next-Gen Ranger Raptor,” said Dave Burn, Ford Performance chief programme engineer for new model. “It’s significantly faster, looks incredible, is packed with new features, and it’s the toughest Ranger we’ve ever made.”

New 3-litre V6 petrol engine
As speculated, there is a new powerplant and it runs on petrol. This is an all-new twin-turbo 3-litre V6 engine from Ford’s EcoBoost family. Tuned by Ford Performance, it is expected to produce up to 288 ps/491 Nm. The engine has a tough compacted graphite-iron cylinder block, which is around 75% stronger and up to 75% stiffer than the iron used in traditional castings.

The engineers have tuned engine to deliver immediate response to throttle inputs, and have installed a race-bred anti-lag system similar to that first seen on the Ford GT road car and Focus ST which enables rapid delivery of boost on demand. The system, available in Baja mode, keeps the turbochargers spinning for up to 3 seconds after the driver backs off the throttle, allowing for faster resumption of acceleration out of corners or through the gears when the driver steps back on the accelerator. In addition, the engine is programmed with an individual turbocharging boost profile for each of the advanced 10-speed automatic transmission’s gears, for optimised performance.

The new powertrain has an electronically‑controlled active exhaust system amplifies the engine note in 4 selectable modes to adapt its vocal character. Drivers can choose their preferred engine sound by pressing a button on the steering wheel, or by selecting a drive mode that uses one of the following settings – Quiet, Normal, Sport, or Baja. In the Baja mode, intended for off-road use only, the exhaust behaves more like a straight-through system.

2-litre EcoBlue bi-turbo diesel 4-cylinder engine will also be available for the new Ranger Raptor, but from 2023.

The 3-litre engine may be bigger than what is practical for the Peninsular Malaysian market and Ford says it will continue to offer the 2-litre EcoBlue bi‑turbodiesel 4-cylinder engine in some markets. However, it will only be available from 2023.

Hardware for the hardest conditions
The chassis of the new Ranger Raptor differs from that of the new Ranger. It has mounts and reinforcements in certain areas to give the truck greater capability to handle more punishing off-road conditions.

Ford engineers also completely redesigned the suspension. There are new tough yet lightweight aluminium upper and lower control arms, long‑travel front and rear suspension and a refined Watt’s link rear end, all to deliver more control across rough terrain at high speeds.

The suspension upgrades in the Ranger Raptor make the most of the new FOX Live Valve dampers. The suspension adapts in real-time to enable exceptional on-road body control while absorbing corrugations and bigger ruts off-road with ease, ensuring maximum control and performance.

The next-generation FOX 2.5-inch Live Valve internal by-pass shock absorbers feature advanced control technology offering position-sensitive damping capability. These shock absorbers are the most sophisticated ever fitted to the Ranger Raptor and are filled with Teflon‑infused oil that reduces friction by around 50% compared to those on the first generation. While the hardware is FOX, the tuning and development work was carried out by Ford Performance using a mixture of computer-aided engineering and real-world testing.

Linked to revised selectable drive modes, the Live Valve internal by-pass system has been developed to provide better on-road comfort and off-road ride quality both at high and low speed. In addition to working with the drive modes, the system works in the background to prepare for different conditions. As the shocks compress, different zones within the by-pass system give exactly the amount of support needed for the travel being used, and work in reverse as the shocks rebound back to full height.

To provide protection against severe bottom outs, race-proven FOX Bottom-Out Control provides maximum damping force in the last 25% of shock travel. Similarly, the system can stiffen the rear dampers to prevent Ranger Raptor from squatting under hard acceleration, improving vehicle stability.

The new Ranger Raptor gets some serious underbody protection. The front bash plate is almost double the size of the one in standard new Ranger, and is made from 2.3 mm thick high-strength steel.

All-terrain control
For the first time, the Ranger Raptor gets an advanced full-time 4-wheel drive system with an all‑new electronically‑controlled on-demand 2-speed transfer case. This is combined with front and rear locking differentials which is something that will be greatly appreciated by hardcore off-road drivers.

With 7 drive modes, the truck’s character can be optimised for anything from smooth roads to mud and ruts. Each selectable drive mode adjusts a number of elements from engine and transmission to ABS sensitivity and calibration, traction and stability controls, exhaust valve actuation, steering and throttle response. In addition, the gauges, vehicle information and colour themes on the instrument cluster and centre touchscreen change with the selected drive mode.

Trail Control is something like cruise control but for off‑roading. The driver simply selects a set speed below 32 km/h and the vehicle will manage its acceleration and braking while the driver concentrates on steering through difficult terrain.

Tough and athletic
Looks-wise, the new Ranger Raptor has similarities with the new Ranger but gets a bolder appearance with more visual muscle. The matrix LED headlights with LED daytime running lights raise lighting performance to new levels, featuring predictive curve lights, glare-free high beam and auto dynamic levelling.

Functional vents, aero features and tough, grippy cast-aluminium side steps enhance the look and functionality of the truck. At the rear, LED taillights provide a signature styling link to the front, while the Precision Grey rear bumper features an integrated step pad and towbar that is tucked up high to avoid compromising the departure angle.

Inside, the theme continues to emphasize off-road performance. The cabin features all-new, jet fighter-inspired sports seats in the front and rear to increase comfort and offer more support during high-speed cornering.

The Code Orange accents on the instrument panel, trim and seats are mirrored by the ambient lighting which bathes the interior in an amber glow. Occupants will also benefit from the latest digital technology such as a 12.4‑inch all-digital cluster and 12-inch centre touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
