BMW’s largest SUV, the X7 (G07), has received an update after 4 years in the market (3 years in Malaysia) and it comes with a new frontal appearance that we should be seeing on the next generation of the 7-Series which will make its debut very soon.

The main feature of the new look is the split headlight design that is a key element in BMW’s new design language. This is the first time that split headlight units have been employed for DRLs (which also function as turn indicators) as well  as main beams. The low-beam/high-beam headlights are separate LED units below the DRLs. The headlights have adaptive matrix capability to customise the spread of light for maximum illumination without dazzling oncoming drivers.

The updated front-end also has an ‘Iconic Glow’ kidney grille with understated cascade lighting for the two grille elements. The illumination is activated when one of the doors is opened and while on the move (but it be switched off if not desired). At the rear, the L-shaped light strips are said to generate significantly greater intensity so they can double up as brake lights and the light units can therefore be kept extremely slim.

Within the huge bodyshell of the X7, the three rows of seats have new seat surfacing and bolder  colour combinations. For most variants, there is a sport leather steering wheel with shifter paddles, 4-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, panoramic glass sunroof, Harman/Kardon audio, heated comfort seats for the driver and front passenger and Comfort Access.

As with some other models in this class, the dashboard is dominated by displays. In the case of the X7, the BMW Curved Display is made up of a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and a control display with a 14.9-inch screen. The two screens, which extend to two-thirds of the width. merge into one high-resolution display unit behind a single glass surface. While the panel orientation is curved towards the driver, the front passenger can also view the screen and operate the iDrive 8 system.

The dashboard surface is now made from Sensafin, a high-quality, vegan surface material with leather-like properties has exclusive three-dimensional quilting and surface perforation.

The instrument panel has an extremely slim form, its horizontal structure emphasising the width of the interior. A new ambient light bar makes its debut below the interior trim strip in the front passenger area. It has a crystalline surface structure and effective backlighting with the use of LED units. The light distribution, brightness and colour for the interior illumination can be configured with a choice of 15 colours.

With all seats in use, there’s 326 litres of cargo volume and depending on whether the second and third row are folded down, the capacity can be expanded to a maximum 2,120 litres. To simplify loading, the standard air suspension can be lowered at the touch of a button. The tailgate is split, with both sections opening and closing automatically. The advantage of this 2-section tailgate is that you don’t need to always raise a large door just to put in smaller items.

The Sky Lounge sunroof is made up of 3 glass section spanning the length of the roof. All the roof elements have an electrically sliding headliner and its 15,000 graphic patterns can generate a display reminiscent of a starlit sky. This is a Starlight Headliner which first appeared in Rolls-Royce models many years ago.

The X7 continues to use a range of engines from the new modular generation of the BMW Group Efficient Dynamics family. However, it remains as a hybrid rather than plug-in hybrid powertrain. The range is headed by a new 4.4-litre petrol V8 for the X7 M60i xDrive. Joining it are newly-developed 3-litre, 6-cylinder in-line units in the petrol X7 xDrive40i and diesel X7 xDrive40d. The current X7 assembled in Malaysia is the xDrive40i variant and it is likely that this will remain the case with the updated version.

The new 3-litre petrol engine of the xDrive40i has been improve in many areas and maximum output has been increased by 47 bhp to 380 bhp, while peak torque rises by 70 Nm to 520 Nm and can be boosted to as much 540 Nm by the 48V mild hybrid system.

The 8-speed Steptronic transmission is a new unit, used for the first time in the X7. Gear transitions are quicker and there’s a Launch Control function as well as a new Sprint function when a quick burst of speed is required. With the Sprint function, the transmission automatically shifts into the lowest usable gear and the powertrain and chassis systems switch to their sportiest settings. For maximum performance, the hybrid system’s electric boost is also activated.

Power goes to all 4 wheels via the efficient and intelligent xDrive system with rear-wheel-drive bias. It uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case interlinked with the powertrain and chassis systems to distribute power between the front and rear wheels as required.

The X7 now comes with adaptive two-axle air suspension with electronically controlled dampers as standard. The dampers respond adaptively both to road surface conditions as well as driving style. The various Driving Experience Control modes also give a more sporty or a more comfortable basic damper setting.

Thanks to the link-up with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, the vehicle load registered by the air suspension sensors can be factored into braking modulation. When the X7 exceeds 140 km/h, or the Driving Experience Control mode is set to Sport, the body is automatically lowered, increasing stability and reducing aerodynamic drag. Ride height can be lowered in 2 stages and by up to 20 mm.

New variants for locally-assembled BMW X3 and X4

Auto Bavaria, a dealership group for the BMW Group in Malaysia, has opened its new outlet in Jalan Chan Sow Lin, Kuala Lumpur, to complement the aftersales services at Auto Bavaria Kuala Lumpur. The facility, referred to as Auto Bavaria CSL, focusses on providing quick service and repairs for BMW and MINI vehicles with the BMW & MINI Service Fast Lane.

It is the third Auto Bavaria service workshop in the city centre, alongside Jalan Tun Razak and Sungai Besi. It operates 6 days a week, except on public holidays

Offering regular vehicle maintenance, wear and tear repairs, tyre replacements, cosmetic repairs, etc, the new 39,800 square-foot facility has a customer lounge, Isetta Bar, reception bays for incoming vehicles and a BMW AC charging station. At this time, it has a team of 23 employees

BMW Group Malaysia maintained leadership position in premium segment in 2021

The BMW i4, fourth model in the German carmaker’s electric BMW i sub-brand, can now be pre-booked in Malaysia. It was first shown in the country at NEXTGen Malaysia in January this year. The retail price starts from RM389,800 (without insurance) with an Extended Warranty & Service Package included. For those who use BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia’s financing plan, monthly instalments can start from RM4,306 (terms and conditions apply).

Customers can choose from Black Sapphire, Mineral White and Dravit Grey for exterior colours which will be supplemented with Sanremo Green, M Portimao Blue and M Brooklyn Grey later in the year. Interior upholstering is available in Black, Mocha and Tacora Red Leather Vernasca.

The new i4, which went on sale in Europe in late 2021, is part of a comprehensive product offensive by the BMW Group in the field of models with electrified drive. The company currently has the biggest range of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models and by next year, it expects to have 25 models with electrified drive on sale.

Designed by a team led by Kai Langer, Head of BMW i Design, the i4 is the brand’s first Gran Coupe with electric drive in the classic rear-wheel drive layout. The smoothly contoured panels with a clear surfacing language incorporate aerodynamic details that are vital to keeping wind resistance low, particularly for a BEV.

The powertrain is a 5th generation BMW eDrive system which has an electric motor that can generate a maximum output of 250 kW (340 ps) with peak torque of 430 Nm. This gives it a capability of 0 to 100 km/h within a claimed 5.7 seconds.

The eDrive system has a Combined Charging Unit (CCU) with a built-in 4 kW voltage transformer for flexible battery charging. Recharging can be done a domestic power socket, a BMW i Wallbox or DC fast chargers. Depending on the power source, charging time can be 31 minutes (from 10% to 80%) or up to 8.25 hours. A fully charged lithium-ion battery pack will provide up to 590 kms of range, depending on driving conditions.

The version officially imported by BMW Group Malaysia is the i4 eDrive40 M Sport which is equipped with the M Sport package. This has the M Aerodynamics exterior with M High-gloss Shadow Line, 19-inch M Aerodynamic Wheels 860 M Bicolour with staggered widths, and M Sport brakes. Standard on the i4 are BMW Laserlights with Automatic High-beam Control.

The cabin, appointed with Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite Interior Trim, also has the BMW M treatment with the M Anthracite Headliner, M Leather-wrapped Steering Wheel, while the instrument panel is in Sensatec. Functional features include variable sports steering, electric seat adjuster with memory function, Interior and Exterior Mirror Package, as well as automatic air conditioning.

Malaysians understand merits of EVs but misconceptions remain, BMW survey finds

Since the 1990s, China has been the market every carmaker wants to be in. When the country’s economy opened up in the 1980s, the auto industry saw huge investments in preparation for demand for new cars that would explode and make the country the world’s largest market. Because of its gigantic volume, carmakers are even prepared to develop models exclusively for the market because the potential volume justifies the R&D cost.

For BMW, China has become a very important market and in 2021, 846,237 BMW and MINI vehicles were sold there and that was 40% of its global sales for the year. Over the years, the German carmakers has developed long-wheelbase versions of various model series because buyers there want longer cars.

Now, it’s also developed a 3-Series that is fully electric, the first of its type in the world and for now, it is meant only for China. To go on sale in May this year, it has the same shape as a long wheelbase 3-Series sedan (110 mm longer than a standard body) and is badged as a ‘BMW i3 eDrive35L’.

That will, of course, makes people a bit puzzled because the i3 that we have known all along was an independent model line and the first volume-produced battery electric vehicle by BMW, and it also introduced the BMW i sub-brand. Entering the market in 2013, it was a B-segment hatchback and had an advanced structure along with new technologies.

At the end of 2019, BMW said the i3 would end production within 5 years and there was no plan for a follow-up generation. This was probably because the new iX range of BEVs was moving into a more prominent position and could be used for a broad spread of segments.

BMW doesn’t explain why it has chosen to offer such a model other than that ’it is perfect fit for the particular requirements of Chinese customers’. It could well be that market studies indicated that there is a segment of customers who still want something looking conventional and also with the generous legroom afforded by a long wheelbase.

Specially adapted for China
From what is known, the model was ready for production at the end of last year and was submitted for homologation. Fine tuning of the suspension systems to Chinese road conditions was carried out by the joint-venture BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. R&D division, which also adapted some of the car’s componentry to the requirements of the supply chain in China. It will be made at the joint-venture factory in Shenyang.

The ‘eDrive35L’ in the badge indicated that it will have the latest BMW Gen5 eDrive powertrain already used in the iX3, i4 and iX. The battery pack has a gross capacity of 70.3 kWh and with DC fast-charging, going from 10% to 80% is claimed to take 35 minutes. A full battery pack is expected to provide a range of up to 526 kms. If there is an urgency, a 10-miunte fast-charge can give up to 97 kms of range.

The eDrive powertrain has a rear-mounted electric motor with a maximum output of  210 kW (285 ps) and 400 Nm of torque. Claimed 0-100 km/h time is 6.2 seconds and, of course, the driving dynamics that all BMWs are known and appreciated for will also be available.

Also included on-board will be BMW OS8 operating system and a wide range of digital features and services, like high-end connectivity and the Digital Key.

With the i3 eDrive35L, the BMW Group portfolio of fully electric cars now comprises 6 models. The BMW Group is aiming for fully electric vehicles to account for 50% of its global sales by 2030 as it aims for carbon neutrality.

China now, the world later?
While the new i3 is intended for sale only in China, this may be an initial plan. It is likely that eventually, distributors in other markets will ask for it because customers will also want it as it still has that ‘classic’ look instead of the future-oriented designs of the new iX models.

Malaysians understand merits of EVs but misconceptions remain, BMW survey finds

With the public transport system yet to be efficient, reliable and appealing enough to attract more users, Malaysians remain car-dependent, resulting in one of the highest car ownership rates in Southeast Asia. A new survey conducted by the BMW Group in Southeast Asia reveals just how car-dependent Malaysian drivers are, with 85% of respondents indicating that they drive every one to three days – either commuting to and from the office (74%), run daily errands (65%), or travel on the weekends (36%).

Encouragingly, 8 out of 10 of Malaysian drivers also wish to see more electric vehicles (EVs) on the road, with the hope of contributing to a more environmentally conscious world – not to mention save on fuel costs. Reduced carbon emissions (72%), cost savings from using electricity instead of petrol (49%) and a more premium experience (40%) are just some of the key benefits cited by drivers who see the merits of electrification of motor vehicles.

Nevertheless, misconceptions on EVs remain and, at this time, more than half of the Malaysian drivers surveyed say that they will still likely choose a petrol vehicle (59%) for their next purchase. Some common concerns raised were the electric range of EVs, the maintenance costs, as well as the difficulty in keeping their EVs charged. Specifically, 33% of respondents believe that EVs can only travel up to 100 kms before requiring a recharge; another 41% expect EVs to be more expensive to service or maintain over a period of 10 years; while 29% believe that charging EVs would be ‘difficult’.

Valid as they are for any prospective EV owner, these are the concerns of yesterday. As exemplified by BMW i’s pioneering progress in electrified mobility over the years, the technology surrounding EVs and the ecosystem developed to support them have come a long way. With the arrival of the latest BMW i fleet, as well as the expansion of the BMW i public charging network, Malaysians can be more confident switching to EVs.

“It is encouraging to see the level of awareness and excitement around sustainable mobility, and that Malaysian drivers see EVs as the gateway to a more premium driving experience. Being the pioneer of electrified mobility in Malaysia and having been in the field since 2015, we have observed how Malaysian drivers are receptive and even enthusiastic about transitioning to EVs but remain concerned about key issues surrounding it – all of which we have been actively working to alleviate,” said Hans de Visser, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia.

He added: “In addition to introducing the best that we have to offer with the latest fleet of vehicles from BMW i, we have also been proactively developing our infrastructure for charging the vehicles. With these initiatives, there is also an opportunity to change the perception of prospective EV owners in Malaysia on the significant advancements made and that an electric future for the passenger vehicle market in Malaysia is closer than they think. In the end, it is about helping Malaysians realise that they now have a greater Power of Choice to adopt a more sustainable way of mobility.”

The latest EVs from BMW i tackle many of the past and current concerns Malaysians have towards adopting EVs. According to the survey, a significant number of them (39%) have the perception that EVs can only travel up to 100 kms before needing to recharge. That’s an out-of-date number and with BMW i models, the maximum range can be as much as 425 kms. With the premise that most Malaysians travel up to 20 km daily at most, recharging would thus be only necessary roughly once every two to three weeks. That range would also make it possible to go from the Klang Valley to Johor Bahru too, without recharging.

Another perception is around the difficulty of charging EVs – with 29% of Malaysians surveyed believing that the process of charging an EV can prove troublesome. However, in many ways, charging a BMW i vehicle would not be disruptive, partly due to its sufficient electric range allowing for less frequent charging. Additionally, a BMW i Wallbox can be installed at home for overnight charging.

The latest BMW i vehicles are also compatible with DC fast-charging, which BMW Group Malaysia has begun to deploy across its dealership network, public spaces and on the highways, in collaboration with its premium partners. Fast-charging shortens recharging time, so the wait is shorter.

On the misconception that EVs are more expensive to service and maintain – a view held by 41% of survey respondents – EVs actually cost less in this regard, due to having fewer components in the vehicle that require servicing. Components and elements, such as engine oil, sparkplugs and air filters, are absent in an EV.

Aside from this, the woes of battery replacements are also mitigated due to the modular nature of the lithium-ion battery packs at the heart of every electrified BMW. With multiple modules making up the battery pack, the cost of replacement is greatly reduced as owners need to replace only the faulty module, not the entire battery pack.

Further peace of mind is also ensured courtesy of substantial warranty programmes, such as the BMW 5-year Unlimited Mileage Warranty with Free Scheduled Service, and the BMW 8-year/160,000 km Battery Warranty. In fact, the survey revealed battery warranty as a motivation to adopt EVs for 39% of Malaysian drivers, while good aftersales support makes up 35%.

Another key motivator is the level of support Malaysians have from the government, as expressed by 45% of respondents. The Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEV) incentive in the Malaysian automotive policy has encouraged BMW to assemble plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models locally and this year, full duty exemption for EVs is a very welcome development that will narrow the gap in pricing between EVs and traditional vehicles.

Jeff Koons, an American artist, and BMW have had many years of association, going back 12 years to the time when Koons created the 17th BMW Art Car. Since that time, he wanted to create a special edition of a BMW model as a personal project and finally, he got his wish with THE 8 X JEFF KOONS.

Only 99 units of this exclusive edition based on the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe will be available. Describe, as a ‘rolling sculpture’ by Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, it is the most elaborately designed vehicle in all of BMW’s history.

The expressive and striking design combines 11 different exterior colours, ranging from blue to silver as well as from yellow to black. The multi-coloured interior uses high-end materials, fine leather and the cupholder lid includes edition badging and the artist’s signature. The seats are made up of the striking red and blue which reflects the colours of superheroes from the comic book universe as well as those of the company’s high-performance unit, BMW M.

Overall, the energetic and powerful design includes both elements of pop art as well as geometric patterns paying homage to the sporty 8-Series Gran Coupe’s intricate contours and shape. The exploding lines of colour at the rear, in turn, are their own unmediated homage to the artist’s 2010 BMW Art Car, while the ‘POP!’ on each side as well as the vapour thrust imagery symbolize the power and speed, according to the artist.

Over 200 hours of manual work
Over 200 hours of manual work were spent by highly specialized professionals at two BMW Group plants on the exterior paintwork alone, where the colour samples were often applied with magnifying glasses. Dozens of engineers and designers were involved and Koons had many days of discussions on design options with the BMW employees involved.

“I was thinking very intensely about it: What is the essence of the 8-Series Gran Coupe? What is the essence of power? How to create something that exemplifies all the energy of the BMW 8 Series that is also able to touch upon the human element?” he said.

The original 850i was the first model of the 8-Series launched in 1990 and was celebrated as creating a new perspective of progress in advanced motoring, appealing to the connoisseur who acknowledges elegance and performance as the ultimate blend of perfection. THE 8 X JEFF KOONS also continues this tradition.

The artist’s dream car realised
“My edition of the BMW 8-Series is my dream car! It is very special to me and I’ve wanted to create a special edition BMW for a long time. It is sporty and flashy as well as minimalist and conceptual. I can’t wait to drive it and ride in it, and I hope that people will enjoy the Gran Coupe just as much as I do,” said Koons.

“On the car, the lines are getting bigger on their journey from the bonnet towards the boot, creating a sense of forward movement just as the ‘POP!’ and the vapour thrust design elements do. The blue colour resembles the vastness of space and I like the idea of the car being a global car. What matters is how we relate to each other and our awareness of everything we are surrounded by. For the driver and all passengers, there is a heightened state of pleasure. This is what my car has to offer,” he explained.

Each car will come with a large-format certificate signed by the artist which, in addition to Zipse’s signature, also contains the individual Vehicle Identification Number. The artist also designed the dust jacket of the Driver’s Manual, while the signature of the artist is set into the cupholder panel in the Bavarian blue from the BMW logo.

Following its world premiere in Los Angeles this month, THE 8 X JEFF KOONS will be presented at numerous art fairs and events in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Initially, the car will be on display for the general public in Manhattan’s Rockefeller Plaza before one car from the series, signed on the tailgate by Jeff Koons,  will be auctioned off at Christie’s in New York on April 4. All proceeds from the highest bid will go to the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC), a non-profit NGO which Koons has been personally involved with for over 2 decades.

This BMW M3 GT2 was aesthetically reworked by the US artist Jeff Koons and in 2010, it was unveiled as the 17th model in the BMW Art Cars series. The car bears the racing number 79 – a tribute to the BMW M1 body work-over presented by Andy Warhol in 1979. The striking colours of Koons’ Art Car exude a boisterous sense of power, motion and energy. As with Warhol’s M1, Koons’ BMW also participated in the Le Mans 24-hour race.

Having delivered 8,439 BMW passenger vehicles and 978 MINI vehicles, BMW Group Malaysia captured the leading position in the segment last year. Of the number, 16% were electrified, bringing the total number of electrified BMW and MINI vehicles on Malaysian roads today to just over 21,600 units.

“2021 was the year of our electrification-offensive, for us as well as the BMW Group worldwide, and with the amazing response we have received in Malaysia for the all-new BMW i models, we are confident that the Electric Future we envision for Malaysia will soon become reality. 3-Series most popular
The 3-Series accounted for 28% of total BMW deliveries with over 2,400 units in 2021, the most popular model being the 320i Sport. The 2-Series overtook the long-favoured 5-Series for the very first time, with over 1,270 cars delivered to customers. For this model, the 218i Gran Coupe introduced in October 2020 was the bestseller. The 5-Series, which is the second oldest BMW model line assembled in Malaysia, followed closely behind with 1,150 units.

Throughout 2021, the BMW X family of Sports Activity Vehicles (SAVs) remained popular, with over 3,200 vehicles delivered. The X1 continued to be the top-seller over 960 units, followed by the electrified X5 which had over 850 units delivered, a 22% increase from the previous year.

More electrified MINIs sold
The MINI brand saw a 5.6% growth in 2021, led again by the MINI Countryman. Over 68% of MINI sales were of this model, the largest in the range. Like the BMW brand, MINI too has seen increased sales in its electric models. In 2021, over 16% of all MINI vehicles delivered were electrified, compared to 2020 where the figure stood at just over 7%.

There is increased interest in electric vehicles, as evident by growing sales of the MINI Electric.

Over 50% of all BMW and MINI vehicle (and also BMW Motorrad motorcycles) delivered last year were financed by BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia. The digitalisation of the customer journey also continued with the expansion of the BMW Engage online financing application to include the BMW Premium Selection brand. Eight out of ten contracts last year were funded digitally, equating to over 4,400 contracts funded via BMW Engage.

Globally, the BMW Group reported 8.4% growth last year, with a total of 2,521,525 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles delivered to customers worldwide. BMW vehicles accounted for 88% of the number and for fully electric models, there was a 133.2% increase (for all brands), which is an indication that electric mobility is catching on and growing each year.

100,000 vehicles assembled locally
BMW Group Malaysia will soon set a new milestone at its assembly plant in Kulim when the 100,000 vehicle assembled (from the time BMW itself was involved in local assembly) rolls out. This eventual milestone affirms the carmaker’s confidence in its continued investments towards building and sustaining Malaysia as a regional automotive hub. With growing interest for electrification in Malaysia, the BMW Group has also introduced more powertrain options for its line-up of locally-assembled models.

The 100,000th vehicle assembled in Malaysia since the BMW Group Malaysia was established will soon roll out from the facility in Kedah. (Below) BMW engines are also assembled in the same area at a separate facility.

With range anxiety and infrastructure being the most pressing issues for customers and automakers alike in advancing electromobility in the country, BMW Group Malaysia says it will continue to accelerate the roll-out of its public charging network nationwide. As of January 2022, there are 77 BMW i Charging facilities across the country, with 25 facilities powered by partnerships with local dealers and industry players. This network is complemented with 16 charging points with Shell Recharge & Park Easy as well as 319 charging facilities with GreenTech Malaysia and its ChargEV platform.

Going beyond selling motor vehicles

Exclusivity is always desired, especially in the upper end of the car market and this was evident last year when Auto Bavaria offered a limited edition of BMW X5 xDrive 45e with M Performance Parts. Only 30 units were available, assembled at the BMW facility within the Inokom plant in Kedah, and all found owners within a week.

The response to that limited edition encouraged Auto Bavaria to place an order for a second batch but this time, only 22 units are available. “We are now able to once again offer our esteem customers a second opportunity to own this extremely premium vehicle. Auto Bavaria brand has become synonymous with top-notch quality for both sales and service, which is why we are the preferred BMW dealership,” said Vi Thim Juan, Managing Director of Auto Bavaria.

Each Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV), priced from RM480,000 (excluding insurance) comes with M Performance parts which not only give sportier looks but actually improve aerodynamics.

Bestselling SAV of the range
The X5 is the bestselling model of BMW’s SAV range worldwide. It was the company’s first SAV and the current generation is the fourth one since 1999. Powering the X5 xDrive45e M Sport is a 3-litre 6-cylinder engine with BMW eDrive technology. With a combined maximum output of 394 bhp/600 Nm, the SAV is claimed to have a top speed of 235 km/h and a 0 to 100 km/h capability of 5.6 seconds.

Running with just the electric motor, the claimed range can be up to 77 kms on a fully charged lithium-ion battery pack, with a maximum speed of 135 km/h. With the hybrid powertrain optimizing fuel efficiency, the fuel consumption is said to be up to 40 kms/litre.

All X5s have all-wheel drive which is provided by BMW’s proven xDrive system. Power delivery first goes through an 8-speed Steptronic transmission with enhanced shift dynamics and then to all four wheels with torque distribution according to grip and surface conditions.

New variants for locally-assembled BMW X3 and X4

BMW Malaysia, a strong supporter of local assembly of its products, has added new variants for the BMW X3 as well as the new X4 xDrive30i M Sport. The latest X3 variants are the sDrive20i and xDrive30i, which have combustion engines, and the xDrive30e, which has a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Retail prices of the new variants are as follow:

The prices exclude insurance but include Sales and Service Tax (which is exempted until June 30, 2022) as well as BMW Service and Repair Inclusive. Having undergone visual updates, the new SAVs (Sport Activity Vehicles, as BMW prefers to call its SUVs) present a sporty appearance with larger kidney grilles linked by a central bridge. There’s also a new front apron design with vertical air intakes, new bumper profile, and full LED headlights that are 10 mm slimmer.

Full LED lighting is also provided at the rear which has new and larger tailpipes with free-form tips. For the alloy wheels, the size is up to 20 inches for the new range.

The new X4 retains the coupe-like roofline and now has vertically positioned reflectors as well as a rear bumper with new inserts.

The M Sport Package on both models comes with noticeably upgraded equipment levels such as larger air intakes and M-specific front aprons, along with new colour offerings, rims, and interior trim finishers.

The colour choices for the X3 are Alpine White, Brooklyn Grey, Phytonic Blue or Carbon Black for the exterior, and Leather Vernasca Black with Blue Stitching on the inside. However, customers are also offer a Leather Vernasca Mokka interior with the Alpine White and Carbon Black exterior finish.

As for the X4, the choices for the bodywork are Alpine White, Piemont Red, Phytonic Blue and Carbon Black, and Leather Vernasca Black with Contrast Stitching within. There is also the option of Leather Vernasca Tacora Red with the Alpine White and Carbon Black exterior.

Under the bonnet is a 4-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine tuned to deliver 184 ps/300 Nm for the X3 sDrive20i and 252 ps/350 Nm for the X3/X4 xDrive30i. The sDrive20i is fitted with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission while the xDrive30i uses an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.

As a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), the X3 xDrive30e (above) has both a 4-cylinder combustion engine and electric motor, the latter powered by a lithium-ion battery pack with a gross capacity of 12 kWh. It can run with both engine and/or motor and on just the motor alone, the range is claimed to be up to 50 kms.

All-wheel drive is standard for the X3 xDrive30i and X3 xDrive30e, while the X3 sDrive20i has rear-wheel drive. The M Sport suspension for the X3 has specific sprint and damper tuning for more dynamic handling, while the X4 xDrive30i is equipped with adaptive suspension.

The interiors of both models now have a larger 10.25-inch Control Display with touchscreen functionality, zinc-plated elements in the air vents, and new control elements beneath the display in the centre console. The new models are also fitted with sports seats that have pronounced side bolsters for better support, along with sophisticated leather upholstery for added premium appeal.

For the X3 xDrive30e, the electrified credentials of the model are subtly expressed with details in BMW i Blue.

The features of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant have been significantly expanded, now allowing the user to open windows and adjust the air-conditioning system using voice commands. BMW Maps, a cloud-based navigation system, is also new, combining increased precision with simplified destination entry points and even more comprehensive traffic updates.

For the brands that sell high-performance cars, going electric has added challenges. They need to not only ensure that the electrically-powered cars offer the same sort of performance levels their customers expect from their brand but also new requirements like charging times and range. The latter especially was not so important before as customers are okay with high fuel consumption and can refuel as needed. With an electric car, you cannot ‘refuel’ as easily and at this time, it still takes a while to recharge battery packs (although that time is getting shorter),

For a company like BMW M, which has built up a reputation producing cars with superlative performance, going electric meant that they had also to be able to offer the same kind of performance. Drawing on the BMW Group’s expertise in the field, BMW M also had its own specialized skills to develop electric cars worthy of the M badge.

3.8 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h
The first BMW M automobile designed for purely electric mobility from the outset – the new iX M60 – should provide reassurance to fans of M. With an output of 455 kW/619 ps and maximum torque of up to 1.015 Nm, it has a claimed standstill to 100 km/h time of 3.8 seconds and can go over 250 km/h but is limited to that top speed. With a fully charged battery pack, factory tests have shown it to be able to travel up to 566 kms.

The 111.5-kWh battery pack can be recharged using a DC fast-charger and add 150 kms of range within 10 minutes. Leave it connected to the charger longer and after 35 minutes, the energy content can be up to 80% from 10%.

The suspension technology of the iX M60 includes a double-wishbone front axle, a 5-link rear axle and electric steering with Servotronic function and variable ratio. In addition, there’s adaptive dual- axle air suspension with electronically-controlled shock absorbers. The dual axle air suspension ensures the optimum vehicle height at any speed, regardless of the load. The air supply to the suspension is regulated individually for each wheel and can thus also compensate for uneven loading.

The damper forces are adaptively controlled with an M-specific characteristic via continuously adjustable valves, which take into account longitudinal and lateral acceleration, road speed and steering angle as well as body and wheel acceleration on the front axle in order to activate the required damper force within a few milliseconds.

Like all BMW i models, the iX M60 will have BMW IconicSounds Electric with specific characteristics for its M exclusivity. The emotional soundtrack that the occupants will hear was created in a collaboration between film music composer and Academy Award winner Hans Zimmer and BMW Group Creative Director Sound Renzo Vitale.

Even pressing the START/STOP button is acknowledged with an inspiring acoustic signal. While driving, the BMW IconicSounds Electric provide authentic feedback to every movement of the accelerator pedal. The sound of the drive is characterized by a particularly energy-charged sound development. The sound characteristics are based on the setting selected with the Driving Experience Control Switch.

Milestone for BMW M
The debut of the iX M60 marks a milestone in the history of BMW M, 50 years old this year, as it enters the segment of electrified performance cars. Like all recent BMW fully electric models, the architecture is completely new and designed for electric powertrains. So the full benefits are exploited and performance can be optimized. The iX M60’s performance, efficiency and range also benefit from its optimized aerodynamics which give it a Cd of 0.26 (in Sport Mode).

Lightweight construction principles
The vehicle concept of the iX provides an ideal basis for an all-electric SAV with high-performance characteristics. Both the body structure and the design principle as well as suspension set-up are geared towards combining ride comfort with sporty handling characteristics. The aluminium spaceframe concept and the carbonfibre cage with carbonfibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the roof, side and rear sections are an intelligent mix of materials that combines increased rigidity with optimized weight.

The use of CFRP to reduce weight has a long tradition at BMW M. The particularly lightweight high-tech material already achieved great results in combining engine performance and weight in the M3 CSL which was introduced in 2003. In fact, BMW M pioneered the use of CFRP in large-scale automotive production and today uses it in numerous current models as part of the intelligent lightweight construction principle.

The high-voltage battery is located deep down in the underbody, lowering the vehicle’s centre of gravity for agile handling as well as balanced axle load distribution. Like the other models, the iX M60 also has an extensive range of driver assistance systems. A new generation of sensors, a new software stack and a powerful computing platform also provide considerable potential for consistently advancing automated driving and parking functions – with level 3 functionality in the medium term.
