It’s beyond good. No, really. I normally don’t start-off a review by cutting to the chase, but this time I really see no point to delaying the inevitable. So I’ll start with how I normally end: If you’re looking for a large 7-seater SUV, and if this is within your budget, you simply must go have a test-drive of the Mazda CX-9. And now if you’re interested to know more, here’s why… but first, here’s my first-impression video upon collecting the CX-9 from Bermaz…

First-off, while looks are indeed subjective, and beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder and blah, blah, blah, blah, and all that, I personally think the Mazda CX-9 is an extremely attractive looking SUV, especially from this angle:

In fact, the external colour of this test-unit really doesn’t do the styling any justice, because I’ve seen it in silver and it looks even more magnificent. The CX-9 somehow manages to pull-off being stylishly-elegant and yet subliminally-sporty at the same time, and folks, it only gets better over on the inside…

Pictures (and of course my severely-limited photography skills) really don’t do any justice to the interior of the CX-9, because it’s jinba-ittai* city in there. The moment you get in, I defy you to not think that you’re in a continental SUV because this one simply reeks of opulence. I have to say, in terms of interiors, the CX-9 really does have one of the best (if not the best) in its class. While ergonomics are top-notch, it’s not just the way the interior is laid-out, but also the way it’s made and from the materials that it’s made up of, which really sets it apart from the rest.

*“Jinba-Ittai reflects the feeling that the sense of oneness between a rider and his beloved horse is the ultimate bond.” –Mazda.

The most amazing thing about the CX-9 though is the way it uses the 228bhp and whopping 420Nm of torque from its 2.5-litre, DOHC, Skyactiv-G 16-valve, 4-cyl petrol engine, mated to a Skyactiv Drive 6-speed auto transmission with manual shift capability. For starters, all that delicious torque is available from just 2,000rpm, and this enables the CX-9, despite its size, to accelerate from a standstill to triple-digit speeds in a time that totally belies its external size.

(Full specifications sheet can be downloaded after the photo gallery)

The thing is though, thanks to GVC* or G-Force Vectoring Control , the acceleration and speeds that the CX-9 can achieve are more refined and smooth rather than frantic and frenetic. Excellent NVH suppression also means that speeds well in excess of the national limit cannot be felt, at all; 140 does indeed feel like 80. Don’t say I didn’t warn you…

So what is *GVC? It’s not easy to explain GVC, because it all boils down to ‘feeling’, but I’ll try. Using a sophisticated arsenal of active sensors that are constantly communicating between the engine, gearbox, accelerator pedal, steering wheel, suspension, active safety systems and even the chassis, GVC continually monitors all the driving inputs from the driver, i.e. speed, terrain, road conditions, throttle position, acceleration, deceleration, even lateral and longitudinal forces, to optimise every facet in order to provide a more relaxed and smooth ride regardless if it’s a straight highway or twisty B-road drive.

That didn’t help much did it? Okay it’s magic. GVC is magic. Well it feels like it anyway, but for a more detailed and concise explanation, one better than the above, click this official link: Mazda WTH Is GVC…

And now the bad part. Because the CX-9 is fully-imported (CBU), it retails for a whopping RM265,585.40 for this 2WD variant as tested, and RM280,585.40 for the AWD variant (both variants share the exact same powertrain, individual spec sheets below the photo gallery). These prices are with zero-rated GST too, which is a good thing because earlier the aforementioned AWD variant was just a couple of grand shy of RM300,000! Ouch.

But you know what, as I said in my final parting-words video below, I reviewed this SUV without wanting to know anything about it. Really, when I picked it up, I didn’t know how much it cost, or what kind of specifications it had, and I’m happy to say, I underestimated every aspect, especially the price. As you’ll see in the video below, I mentioned that it “feels like half-a-million bucks”. Well it doesn’t cost that much, not even close, but boy, oh yeah, does it ever feel like it. – Chris Wee.

Hey folks! With great pride I’d like to introduce you to MotoMalaya.net! MM.net is a sister-site in Bahasa Malaysia to Piston.my, and while it has been around for some time now, Editor Sep Irran promises that there will be a lot more car-related news, features and reviews in the near future, while still bringing you the best that the world of 2-wheels has to offer. Think of MM as the BM variant of Piston.my and you’ll not be far-off the mark…

His first review under the new MM direction is this Mitsubishi Outlander 2.4, from Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia, which I also had a go at, but my review will come later. In the meantime, click on the box-link below to have a look at Sep’s take on it. Isn’t it ironic that the first car review from MM is a car from MMM? We’ll take it as a good sign. Hope you enjoy it! – Chris Wee.

The Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid has been declared as one of the safest cars in its class after being awarded an overall five-star safety rating by the New Car Assessment Programme for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP). The ASEAN NCAP is a collaborative effort between the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and Global NCAP.

The IONIQ was tested using a stringent 2017-2020 rating system and achieved an outstanding overall score of 91.98 points. It fared well in three categories namely, Adult Occupant Protection (46.34 points over 50.00), Child Occupant Protection (21.48 points over 25.00) and Safety Assist Technologies (24.17 over 25.00) making it one of the safest cars in its segment.

“We are elated with the latest five-star ASEAN NCAP award to add to the list of IONIQ’s safety awards, including the 5-star Safety Rating by Euro NCAP in 2017 and the 2017 Top Safety Pick+ Award from IIHS (Independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) in the US. The IONIQ has proven to be one of the safest cars in its class featuring advanced safety features. With a starting price of RM94,788 (On-The-Road Price without GST and Insurance, WEF 1st June 2018) it is certainly value for money, coupled with its award-winning design and a host of convenient features,” said Mr Dennis Ho, Managing Director of Sime Darby Motors – Malaysia, Thailand & Taiwan.

According to the ASEAN NCAP, the IONIQ scored impressively thanks to its advanced safety equipment, which includes effective braking and avoidance technologies such as the Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Seatbelt Reminder System (SBR) including rear passengers, ISOFIX and top tether that is standard across all variants. The IONIQ also offers several advanced safety technologies such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) for City, Inter-Urban and Vulnerable Road Users Technologies, Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA). (These features are only available in the HEV PLUS variant).

The Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) alerts drivers to emergency situations, braking autonomously when required. Using front radar and camera sensors, AEB operates in three stages; initially warning the driver visually and acoustically, controlling the brake according to the collision danger stage and applies maximum braking force just before the moment of collision. When the car senses a vehicle or pedestrian, the system is activated and avoids a collision or minimizes damage when a collision is otherwise unavoidable.

Other features that contributed to the IONIQ’s five-star rating include:

Lane Keeping Assist System including Lane Departure Warning

  • This alerts the driver acoustically and visually if the car crosses road markings without indicating, and applies slight force to the steering wheel in order to guide the driver back to a safe position. (The feature is only available in the HEV PLUS variant)

Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert

  • This system warns the driver of surrounding vehicles, passengers or other objects that may lead to a collision if unnoticed while the car is in motion – a further safety feature of the IONIQ. (The feature is only available in the HEV PLUS variant)

Passive Safety

  • A total of seven airbags are positioned around the interior of the IONIQ, including a knee airbag for the driver

A host of local awards that the IONIQ has won in 2017 include the 2017 Hybrid of the Year at the Vehicle of the Year Awards (VOTY) by DSF.my in collaboration with Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Berhad, 2017 Hybrid Vehicle of the Year by CarSifu Editor’s Choice Awards, 2017 Sedan & Hatchback of the Year (RM100,000-RM130,000) category and the 2017 Hybrid Car of the Year Category at the Malaysia Car of the Year Awards.

HSDM offers a five-year or 300,000km (whichever comes first) warranty for the vehicle, three-year or 60,000km (whichever comes first) free service including parts, labour and engine oil. It also comes with an eight-year unlimited mileage warranty for the battery and a battery price below RM10,000 for the following eight years if the battery needs replacement. A 24-hour road assist service is also available for new and existing Hyundai vehicles.

Price in Malaysia:

Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid 1.6 (A) HEV – RM94,788.00

Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid 1.6 (A) HEV Plus – RM109,988.00
