Mercedes-Benz has just created new technology that will make it possible to validate transactions without a PIN number or smartphone confirmation using just a fingerprint sensor that is built into the car’s interior. The objective is to make it easier to pay for car-related services.

The German automaker is the first in the world to legally and securely include this kind of payment identification in a car. Along with seatbelts, the airbag has also saved countless lives around the world. The Supplementary Restraint Systems (SRS) – so-called because they should be used with seatbelts – have been around since the 1970s and are installed in virtually all modern cars.

Airbag systems initially began as just a bag inflating to provide a cushioning effect and prevent the head of the driver or front passenger from hitting the steering wheel or windscreen, reducing the risk of serious head injuries. But researchers have constantly tried to make airbags more effective in various ways and to provide cushioning and protection in a greater number of conditions.

Honda R&D has been hard at work for decades to make airbags better and developed a ground-breaking front passenger airbag design some years back. The airbag technology is designed to better manage lateral collision forces that can cause an occupant’s head to rotate severely at high velocity and slide off a conventional airbag, increasing the chance of serious injury.

As traffic volumes have increased and immigration procedures have also become more stringent, long queues have been a common sight at both sides.

There have been various proposals to add connections across the Straits including, at one time, a wider 6-lane ‘crooked bridge’ envisioned by former PM Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. However, up till today, there are still only two crossings for vehicles.

Less well known is an alternative way to cross using the ferry services from Tanjung Belungkor and Desaru in Johor to Tanah Merah in Singapore. These ferry services, which commenced in the middle of last year, are not for cars though but provide an easier way for people to get across (about 35 minutes) instead of going through the jam at the Causeway and Second Link.
