In order to build a network of 30,000 new EV fast-charging stations, seven major manufacturers have joined forces. The first chargers are expected to be operational in the United States in the second half of 2024 and in Canada at a later stage thanks to a joint venture by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis.

Both the Combined Charging System (CCS) and Tesla’s exclusive North American Charging Standard (NACS) connections are supported by these chargers. Several manufacturers, like Mercedes-Benz and GM, who are involved in this joint venture, have already committed to use these NACS connections in the near future.

Between 1996 and 2003, Mercedes-Benz produced the Vito of the first generation.

As a more opulent and upmarket variant, the body style was also offered under the V-Klasse brand (the V-Klasse name was dropped for the second generation of the Vito). In November 2017, the eVito, an electric panel van variation utilising the W447 chassis, was released.

The EQV, with a more potent drivetrain and a larger battery than the eVito, was shown as a concept at the March 2019 Geneva Motor Show. It is an electric version of the V-Class that uses the same Vito W447 chassis.

This year, Mercedes-Benz Vans has introduced its refreshed medium-sized series with a new exterior and interior design. The series consists of the new EQV, V-Class and V-Class Marco Polo, the new eVito and Vito.

The Dolphin is the first model in BYD’s Ocean series and the first to use the “Ocean Aesthetics” design philosophy. This new C-segment hatchback has accessibility, efficiency, and practicality.

BYD unveiled the e-Platform 3.0, a new version of the electric vehicle platform that underpins the Dolphin, at the Auto Shanghai in April 2021. This platform is intended to support more efficient performance and range owing to better weight distribution. The Chinese manufacturer also unveiled a new hatchback at the show, the BYD EA1 Concept pre-production prototype while unveiling a refreshed design language and brand identity. Three months after the concept model’s unveiling, the BYD Dolphin was introduced.

Dolphin’s global right hand drive version was first shown to the public as the Standard Range at the Bangkok International Motor Show in March 2023. Sime Darby Motors and BYD have launched the Dolphin and it now joins the Atto 3 in BYD’s Malaysian line-up. The Dolphin comes with two variants: the Dynamic Standard Range and the Premium Extended Range.

Mitsubishi is finally taking the fight to the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Hilux, with the introduction of the sixth version of the Triton midsize truck, which has received a complete makeover for the first time in nine years.

A bigger emphasis is placed on comfort and safety, and the tough bodywork is bigger than before. Also “newly developed” are the ladder frame chassis, suspension, and a more powerful turbo-diesel engine.

Compared to its predecessor, the new Triton has a boxier and more robust appearance while keeping several essential Mitsubishi characteristics, such as the split headlamps and a understated refined version of Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield surround the wider grille at the front, which is the truck’s focal point.

Three years after its launch, the fourth-generation Kia Sorento has undergone an early mid-lifecycle modification. The midsize SUV, which was unveiled in Korea, displays Kia’s most recent and refined style language, with an updated front face and a revamped interior. There are also plans to release international versions later this year with Malaysia in the mix as well.

The reworked front end, which is headlined by a new set of smaller and vertically stacked LED headlights surrounding the tiger-nose grille, is the first thing you’ll notice. Cleaner lines can be seen in the bumper, and the hood is now perfectly in line with the nose.

It is undeniable that the Malaysian government has introduced a number of EV-specific incentives to promote the use of electric vehicles (EVs), including complete import and excise duty exemptions that are valid through the end of 2025.

Despite this, EVs remain prohibitively expensive for the bulk of the population for one key reason, which is the price of buying one. EVs presently cost above RM100,000 in Malaysia. This is supposedly caused by regulations put in place by the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI), not because EVs are costly by nature, but something entirely different.

According to a report by SoyaCincau, a new Completely Built Up (CBU) EV may only be imported into Malaysia in accordance with MITI’s Franchise AP policy which states that an EV can only be imported if its list price in our market exceeds RM100,000. This policy will be in effect until December 31, 2025, much like the exemptions from import and excise taxes that we previously indicated.
