AC Cars has a history going back 122 years and as it still makes cars, it is Britain’s oldest active vehicle manufacturer. Over the years, the company has gone through many changes of name and ownership and is currently part of Acedes Holdings, LLC, which acquired it in 2019.

Among the many sportscars it has produced, the most famous and enduring has been the AC Cobra. AC Cars is the legitimate owner of the AC Cobra trademark for new cars in the UK, Europe and key markets around the world. Fiercely protecting the authenticity of genuine sportscars of the company, and the investment its customers make, the company has fought off imitators or companies passing their products off as genuine.

While many companies are now focussed on developing more battery electric vehicles (BEVs), a few are also looking further at other alternative fuels, particularly hydrogen. This gas is available in abundance and with technology from the space program, it has been possible to make a fuel cell whereby hydrogen’s chemical energy is converted into electrical energy. This can then be used to power motors and the process generates only moisture.

Some companies have developed fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) to a stage where they can be commercialised and are sold or leased to the public. Honda is one of those companies and in fact, the Japanese carmaker has over 20 years of experience in FCEVs. As far back as 2002, Honda had a running model called the FCX which was the FCEV to be certified by two US agencies – the Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board.

The Isuzu D-MAX has a reputation for reliability and toughness, with the ability to take passengers and cargo across extreme terrain. It is durable enough to last a long time and many owners do keep their D-MAX trucks for many years. New trucks may come along but they come to rely on their trusty D-MAX which gets their jobs done.

One owner has kept his D-MAX for 8 years and in that time, it has covered an astounding 351,364 miles (565,465 kms). Those are just 6 digits but to have an idea of just how far the truck has travelled, it is a distance equal to 14 times round our planet. Or to put it another way, it could have travelled to the moon and be halfway back to Earth, having covered an average of 43,750 miles (70,408 kms) per year.

Even though autonomous motoring – where the vehicle can operate and guide itself without human involvements – is still many years away, there are already a number of systems that can act autonomously to prevent accidents or reduce driving fatigue. For instance, automatic emergency braking activates if the driver does not take action in time to prevent a collision. Adaptive cruise control maintains a safe gap with a vehicle ahead by adjusting the set cruising speed.

These systems make use of cameras and radar to identify other vehicles and objects ahead, and a computer processes the data at super high speeds to determine if there is a dangerous situation. Technological advancements have seen the capabilities of the sensors increasing and accuracy of data becoming better and better. More sensors installed around the vehicle’s bodywork provide 360-degree coverage in the more advanced systems today.

Are you thinking of buying an electric vehicle (EV) soon? The government is offering full tax exemption of battery electric vehicles (not hybrids) until the end of 2023, which means that there are considerable savings on the retail price.

However, unlike a hybrid where you do not have to worry about running out of electricity and being unable to recharge the battery pack to continue, EVs will require a new mindset and perhaps even a change in your driving habits. If you do not have a charging point at home, then you will have to get used to going to public charging stations regularly and make a note of where they are.

For some, such issues may be a hassle while others will adapt to them. Some may find that when they want to go outstation, they have to think about where the recharge along the way and they might not be able to detour far.
