Since its launch in Malaysia in January this year, the Toyota Harrier has been in great demand. To date, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has delivered over 500 units to customers throughout Malaysia but with the number of outstanding orders still high, the waiting period has been longer. Now, with cooperation for Toyota Motor Corporation in increasing the supply of the Harrier from the production line in Japan, more stocks are available and customers can expect the waiting period to be shortened.
“We understand that our customers had to wait for a longer period to get delivery of their vehicle. The global demand for the Harrier has been great right from the start and for Malaysia, it surged further during the three months of tax break. The production in Japan is now able to supply more to suit the demand and we will have more vehicles available for delivery,” said Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor.
Priced from RM243,000 (for Peninsular Malaysia registration with SST, without insurance), the latest Harrier is available in two variants – Premium and Luxury. Both variants use the latest generation 2-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine which features a twin scroll turbocharger, D-4ST direct fuel-injection and VVT-iW (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent Wide) for high output with high fuel efficiency as well.
The Harrier’s occupants are well protected with the Toyota Safety Sense Package, a comprehensive suite of Active Safety systems (available in a Toyota model in Malaysia for the first time). These include a Pre-Crash System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping System, Lane Departure Alert and Adaptive High-Beam System.
Other safety systems included are Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Emergency Stop Signal, Electronic Parking Brake + Auto Brake Hold, and Parking Sensors with a Reverse Camera.
Four colour choices are available – Dark Blue Mica Metallic, White Pearl, Sparkling Black Pearl and Silver Metallic. The Harrier comes with 5-year warranty with unlimited mileage. For peace of mind, owners are assured of service and spare parts from all Toyota dealerships throughout Malaysia.
Toyota is also currently running the ‘All About the Drive Bonanza’ promotion until end of the year, those who book a new Harrier stand a chance to win a holiday package and will also be eligible to win a brand new Toyota Sienta compact MPV. More details are available at www.toyota.com.my.
As promised, slightly over a month after showing their new SUV to the Malaysian media at a static preview, PROTON have released more details about the Proton X70 through a second more in-depth media preview today! This second round of previews for the first co-developed vehicle by Geely and PROTON concentrated exclusively on the Integrated Cockpit Information System (GKUI), which will offer owners multiple user functions via apps as well as the option to stay connected to the car via their mobile device. Here’s our first impression following the first viewing of the static launch model today!
(NB: NO photography or any recording whatsoever was allowed during this media preview, so these are just my first-impression thoughts on the Proton X70 – Chris Wee, Editor Piston.my)
Additional Points: Proton X70 is equipped with a 1.8-litre engine producing 135kW (184bhp), Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Warning Assist, Blind-Spot Warning, Lane-Departure Warning, 360-deg All-Round camera, Rear View Camera, High-Beam Assist (automatically dips the high-beam if an oncoming car is detected), Park Distance Assist w/Guide Lines & Audible Warning. Claimed Combined Fuel Consumption 8.0L /100km.
Hosting the media exclusive event was Dr Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer PROTON, Dato’ Radzaif Mohamed, Deputy Chief Executive Officer PROTON, and senior management members of PROTON who explained the features of the GKUI and answered queries relating to the highly anticipated SUV.
A car that connects users to the world…
Featuring an embedded eSIM card, the GKUI in the Proton X70 is preloaded with five apps offering services such as online radio, online music, navigation, weather forecasts and voice recognition. Access to the apps and other car functions is via an 8-inch Android based touchscreen interface featuring a 1280 x 720 full colour display with 16GB of internal memory space. The system also has Wi-Fi connectivity so the X70 can be used as a mobile hotspot.
To fully exploit the connectivity capabilities, owners can pair their cars with their personal mobile device via Proton Link and use an individual ID that is assigned to every buyer. They can then create a profile of their driving thanks to the on board telematics that will record data such as distance travelled, fuel economy, journey times and even keep track of service intervals. There is also a ‘find my car’ function that will be particularly useful when parking in huge and unfamiliar parking complexes.
“The GKUI system in the Proton X70 allows owners to stay almost constantly connected to their car. It’s an active two-way system that allows for multiple options to fit the preferences of individual owners. In the future, the ability to download additional apps will also be offered and just like mobile devices, it means no two cars will be exactly alike,” said Abdul Rashid Musa, Chief Executive Officer of Proton Edar.
Because it runs on an Android operating system, the GKUI offers Android mobile device users full mirroring capabilities. That means apps owners have on their device can be accessed on the Proton X70’s touchscreen thus offering yet more connectivity possibilities. Apple OS user won’t be able to do the same though they will be able to connect to the X70 via Bluetooth to access telephone and contact list functions.
Voice recognition allows true hands free operation…
True hands free operation of a number of functions on the Proton X70 is now possible thanks to advanced voice recognition software that allows the use of spoken commands. Access to the system is granted when an owner utters the phrase ‘Hi Proton’ which opens up a variety of choices that can be controlled simply by speaking a command. This includes operating the windows and air conditioning system and even accessing the navigation app to look for places to eat nearby.
“The Proton X70 is the first Proton model to use voice recognition technology, which is something we think our owners will appreciate. Hundreds of voice samples were recorded for each phrase to ensure the system would have a high degree of accuracy even when you take dialects into account. For ease of use, the GKUI will also type out each spoken phrase on the screen to confirm each command. Currently, the GKUI offers voice recognition for English phrases only as there are software limitations but we have ensured the phrases it recognises are easy to use even for owners who are not fluent speakers of the language,” added Abdul Rashid.
Online bookings for X70 to begin soon…
In line with the high technology image of its first SUV, PROTON will be activating an online booking function on its website on 17 October 2018. Customers who are interested to place a booking for the Proton X70 will be able to book and pay a deposit for their order online, thus making it incredibly convenient for those who don’t have the time to physically visit a PROTON 3S and 4S outlet. “We want to make it as easy as possible for Malaysians to book a Proton X70 so we think this is a step in that direction. To promote our new channel, we will run a promotion for three days from the date the function goes live, where those who place a booking for the Proton X70 will also receive special gifts,” said Abdul Rashid.
Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) has opened their order books for the new facelifted Tucson, which is slated to be launched by the end of this month. Updated with a new cascading grille flanked by reshaped headlights, this version has much more to offer than just a styling makeover. Exterior updates are mainly on the front of the vehicle, leaving the side profile largely unchanged while the rear is updated with a new bumper and refined tailgate lines. Other exterior upgrades include new 17-inch rims as well as LED front lamp and rear lamp (applicable for the Turbo variant). Customers can expect major upgrades in the interior along with its exterior.
“The Tucson is more appealing than before with the new makeover and it remains one of the popular Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) in Malaysia. We expect good response for this version as it fulfills every aspect of customers’ expectations of an SUV. It’s visually appealing, safe, powerful, packed with advanced features and offers comfort to both the driver and passengers,” said Mr Dennis Ho, Managing Director of Sime Darby Motors (Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan).
HSDM will be launching two variants for this facelifted model namely the 1.6L Turbo and the 2.0L Elegance. The 1.6L T-GDI produces 177PS of horsepower and delivers a maximum torque of 265Nm from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm while the Nu 2.0L MPi produces 155PS of horsepower at 6,200 rpm and a maximum torque of 192Nm at 4,000 rpm. The selling price is expected to be from RM123,888 (Price indicated is only applicable to Peninsular Malaysia and excludes insurance).
The facelifted Tucson is entitled to 50,000km free service with 3 years’ validity and a five-year or 300,000km (whichever comes first) warranty. For more information or to place a booking, interested parties can head to the nearest sales outlet or call Hyundai’s Customer Careline at 1-300-13-2000.
Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP), the importer of Porsche vehicles in Malaysia, has introduced the new 911 GT3 RS. The new 911 GT3 RS is synonymous with hard core performance, and is hailed as the perfect bridge between the track and the road. At the heart the new 911 GT3 RS is a 383 kW (520 hp), four-litre, high-performance naturally-aspirated engine. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of 312 km/h. Following the launch of the 911 GT2 RS, this latest release will see SDAP present its second GT road-approved sports car within the same year.
“With a lap time of 6 minutes and 56.4 seconds, the new 911 GT3 RS sets a time of just nine seconds below the most powerful Porsche 911, the GT2 RS. Motorsport is an essential driving force behind the Porsche development team, a force that makes motorsport derived technology perfectly adapted for the road,” said Christopher Hunter, Chief Executive Officer of Sime Darby Auto Performance. “The new 911 GT3 RS promises an unadulterated sound, pure performance, and a challenge that a sports car enthusiast cannot resist,” he added.
Aerodynamics and interior based on the race trim
Aerodynamics have determined the design of the wide, weight-optimised body with its classic rigid rear wing. The racing look continues into the interior with full bucket seats made of carbon to provide secure lateral support in response to high-level driving dynamics. Lightweight door panels with storage nets and opening loops, reduced sound absorption and the new lightweight rear lid further emphasise the consistency of the material choices.
The most powerful naturally aspirated engine at 520 hp
The four-litre, six-cylinder naturally-aspirated engine from Porsche in the new 911 GT3 RS pushes the sports car to new limits: The flat engine delivers 15 kW (20 hp) more than the engine in the previous model and the 911 GT3. Together with a speed range of up to 9,000 rpm, it was the ideal choice as a thoroughbred sports engine. Combined with the specially calibrated seven-speed PDK, the high-performance engine guarantees an outstanding driving performance.
Motorsport-inspired chassis and Clubsport package
Motorsport technology ensures that the chassis offers exceptional driving dynamics. Ball joints on all arms provide even greater precision than conventional elastokinematic bearings. 20-inch lightweight wheels with newly developed 265/35 sports tyres on the front axle enhance agility and steering behaviour, while 21 inch wheels with 325/30 tyres at the rear axle improve traction. As with all current GT sports cars, the Clubsport package is also available for the 911 GT3 RS at no extra cost. The package includes a rollover bar, a manual fire extinguisher, preparation for a battery disconnect switch and a six-point belt for a sporty driving experience.
Weissach package for additional weight savings
For particularly ambitious drivers, the Porsche motorsport department has created an optional Weissach package for a further weight reduction. The package features additional carbon components for the chassis, interior and exterior. In its lightest configuration, this package reduces the weight of the 911 GT3 RS by approximately 17kg.
The retail base price for the new 911 GT3 RS starts from RM 2,230,000, which includes a four-year warranty. The stated price includes all applicable duties, except registration fee, road tax and insurance. Specifications and prices are subject to change without prior notice.
The new Porsche Cayenne Turbo!
Making its Malaysian premiere, the new Porsche Cayenne Turbo takes its place at the top of the Cayenne model line. The completely new top-of-the-range model from the third generation of the Cayenne once again raises the bar for sporty performance in its segment. The increased driving dynamics are based on the combination of innovative technologies such as active aerodynamics including a roof spoiler, controlled three-chamber air suspension, mixed tyres and the new high-performance brake, achieving the driving characteristics of a true sports car. As yet the MY pricing for the new Cayenne Turbo has not been finalised.
The new 911 GT3 RS and Cayenne Turbo will be at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur from today October 10 to October 14, 2018.

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM), the official distributor of Mitsubishi vehicles in Malaysia, made a cool statement today with the introduction of the Outlander Sports Edition. Limited to 120 units, the Outlander Sports Edition is based on the Outlander 2.0-litre and is created on a duo-tone sporty black roof with red metallic paint.
Aesthetically, the Outlander Sports Edition comes with a bold black front grille, glossy black alloy rims and an ‘OUTLANDER’ hood emblem. In the cabin, the Outlander Sports Edition is further accentuated with a dual DVD entertainment and a red accent carpet mat. Priced at RM142, 888.00, the Outlander Sports Edition comes with five years warranty/unlimited mileage. The Outlander 2.0-litre also recently won ‘Best Family Ride’ at the CarSifu Editor’s Choice Awards 2018.
More on the Outlander Sports Edition Premium…
The Outlander has a stylish and bold design, thanks to Mitsubishi’s signature Dynamic Shield face and LED daytime running lights, plus striking 18-inch alloy wheels that are standard. Within the stylish body is a spacious seven-seater cabin with ample room for the entire family. The Outlander boasts best-in-class cargo volume of 1,608 litres with the second and third-row seats folded. Standard equipment includes all-round monitor, premium leatherette seats, automatic headlamps and wipers, and keyless entry with push start button.
A 7-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay functionality allows for seamless connection between Apple (iPhone/iPod) and car. The screen comes with Air Gesture Control for added convenience. The Outlander 2.0L gets front parking sensors to complement the rear units. There’s also a digital video recorder (dashcam) and security/solar film for all windows.
4WD System and Performance…
The Outlander 2.0-litre 4WD is powered by a proven 2.0-litre engine with 145 PS and 196 Nm of torque. The DOHC MIVEC engine is paired with INVECS-III CVT transmission. With many years of winning experience in the grueling Dakar Rally under its belt, Mitsubishi is a specialist in rugged 4WD vehicles. By improving traction on slippery surfaces and stability, 4WD plays a role in active safety – it is especially valuable on SUVs with tall bodies and a high centre of gravity.
The Outlander comes with an intelligent 4WD system as standard across the range. Unlike on-demand 4WD systems in rival SUVs, the Multi-Select 4WD system in the Outlander has three selectable modes – 4WD Eco, 4WD Auto and 4WD Lock – to suit all conditions and terrain.
Safety Features…
Safety is the Outlander’s strongest suit, befitting its role as a family vehicle. Together with 4WD, seven SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, Active Stability & Traction Control (ASTC), Hill Start Assist (HSA) and ISOFIX child seat mounts are standard. The SUV also boasts a strong Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body construction. Other helpful safety features include Rest Reminder, which reminds the driver to take a break when fatigue steps in.
