Ever since Lamborghini launched its first SUV, the Urus, sales have been exceptionally high and propelled it to become the bestselling model for the Italian sportscar maker. In fact, in 4 years, it has produced over 20,000 of the SUVs, which makes the Urus the most successful model the company has ever produced.

But like any progressive company, Lamborghini has not left the Urus as it is and has been inspired by success to raise the bar on its Super SUV. With the new Urus Performante, there are revisions in styling and both the powertrain and chassis have also received improvements for higher performance.

“The Urus set a new standard at its launch, taking Lamborghini’s design DNA and technological talent and delivering the world’s first Super SUV for a new era. The Urus Performante sets the bar even higher for the SUV segment,” said Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini Chairman & CEO.

Extensive use of carbonfibre
The Urus Performante can be identified by a pure, sharper, more prominent bonnet and bumper design/ Deep cuts in the bonnet lines extend down to the new front bumper, and the bonnet has an air outlet forged from lightweight. A roof in carbonfibre is also available as an option, reflecting the Urus Performante’s extensive use of composite materials that makes it the car with the highest number of carbonfibre parts in its segment.

The front bumper and splitter in carbonfibre sport assertive new lines. There are new black front air-intakes which deliver increased engine cooling, while a new air curtain draws airflow over the front wheels. The aerodynamic design theme decreases drag to contribute to the overall aerodynamics efficiency with the newly-designed rear spoiler increasing downforce of the Urus Performante by 38% at the rear end.

In profile, the SUV’s lowered stance is accented by its prominent front, and rear wing and bumper, increasing overall length by 25 mm. The rear is equally distinctive by its purposeful high-performance design as the rear spoiler with carbonfibre fins takes design inspiration from the Aventador SVJ.

The lower rear bumper and diffuser are also in carbonfibre with a lightweight titanium Akrapovic sports exhaust as standard. This generates the characteristic Lamborghini resonance depending on the drive mode selected.

“The Urus Performante’s very bold and characterful design perfectly integrates the improved aerodynamics incorporating the front bumper’s air curtain, with significant visual differentiation including the new lightweight carbonfibre bonnet and extensive use of carbonfibre throughout reminding of its ‘Performante’ heritage. This benchmarking Urus is designed as a unique driver-oriented Super SUV,” said Mitja Borkert, Head of Design.

Ad Personam options available
Inside, the cockpit features Nero Cosmus black Alcantara as standard with a new hexagonal seat stitching design known as the ‘Performante trim’. Customers have a wide choice of options in colour and trim, with further Ad Personam customization including interior matt carbonfibre details, red door handles, and a customized kickplate with the Ad Personam logo.

A new HMI graphic, with a dedicated design for the Urus Performante, features on both the centre console screen and in a large arc across the main display.

Increased power output
Under the bonnet, the V8 twin turbo powerplant power has gained a 16 ps increase to 666 ps (640 ps for the Chinese market due to homologation reasons) with 850 Nm of torque to take it up to a top speed of 306 km/h. With overall weight decreased by 47 kgs, the Urus has a best-in-class weight-to-power ratio of 3.2, allowing it to go from 0 – 100 km/h in a claimed 3.3 seconds and from 100 km/h to standstill in 32.9 metres.

The re-engineered drive modes allow the driver to select the perfect set-up for every surface condition to enjoy more comfort or sharper, stronger throttle response with enhanced agility. Besides the standard drive modes, there is also a new RALLY mode which provides more fun dirt tracks with amplified oversteer.

Lamborghini Urus 2022 at Pikes Peak

Prior to its global debut, the Urus Performante’s high level of performance was demonstrated when it set a new record in the production SUV category on the 2022 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Road, beating the record set 4 years ago.

New steel springs lower the Urus Performante’s chassis by 20 mm, with a wheel track that is broader by 16 mm, over which wider carbonfibre wheelarches surround the new optional 23-inch or forged 22-inch lightweight wheels with titanium bolts and specially developed Pirelli tyres.

Special-developed Pirelli tyres
The tyres come alongside with an evolution of the Urus Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R. For the first time, the Pirelli semi-slick tyre has been developed to meet the characteristics of an SUV, with this particular variant developed in co-operation with Lamborghini. The result of the collaboration is a tyre with increased capability, achieving performance both on dry asphalt with high ambient temperatures and on wet surfaces with colder temperatures.

Polestar’s O2 concept shown in March 2022 received such positive and strong response that the Swedish company (part of the Geely Group) has decided to put it into production. The roadster model will be called the Polestar 6 and is expected to make its debut in 2026. Online bookings are now being accepted in markets where the brand has representatives.

2026 Polestar 6 EV

884 ps/900 Nm electric powertrain
The carmaker makes only battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and the Polestar 6 will have the high-performance, 800V architecture already confirmed for the Polestar 5. This will be able to generate up to 650 kW (884 ps) and 900 Nm from a dual-motor powertrain. The carmaker is targeting a 0 to 100 km/h time of 3.2 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h.

When it was presented as the O2 concept, the electric roadster was said to build on the design, technology and sustainability ambitions laid out by the Precept, showcasing the brand’s vision for future sportscars.

“With the overwhelming consumer and press response, we took the decision to put this stunning roadster into production and I am so excited to make it a reality,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar’s CEO. “Polestar 6 is a perfect combination of powerful electric performance and the thrill of fresh air with the top down.”

The hardtop convertible will be built on Polestar’s bespoke bonded aluminium platform. It’s unlikely that the integrated autonomous drone will be included in the production model. This was a special feature with the O2 concept where a drone could be launched from the car and follow it, autonomously recording video from above and around it.

LA Concept Edition
To celebrate the launch, 500 numbered units of a special ‘Polestar 6 LA Concept Edition’ are to be produced. They will exclusively feature the unique ‘Sky’ Blue exterior, light leather interior and unique 21-inch wheels of the original O₂ concept.

Lucas di Grassi took his maiden win for ROKiT Venturi Racing in the Formula E London E-Prix Round 14, after overcoming Julius Baer Polesitter Jake Dennis (Avalanche Andretti) over a hard-fought, strategic 38-lap battle in the UK capital. Di Grassi emerged through his last of 3 mandatory ATTACK MODE activations with enough in-hand to ensure he’d make it by Dennis when the Brit jumped for his last 30kW boost. The Brazilian then stretched his advantage over the final few laps and into TAG Heuer Added Time to take the chequered flag first.

Nyck de Vries came home third, while his Mercedes-EQ teammate – standings leader Stoffel Vandoorne – clambered to fourth from 13th on the grid. His closest title rival Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing) had made his way as high as fourth himself from 14th at the start of the race, but a late technical problem ended his Lond E-Prix and dealt a hammer blow to his title chances.

Edoardo Mortara (ROKiT Venturi Racing) did his utmost to get his hands on some points from 17th at lights out, but a scrappy, combative performance yielded only 13th position. Jean-Eric Vergne (DS TECHEETAH) retired early on, seemingly in contact, all but ending his championship charge.

Formula E 2022 London

Antonio Felix da Costa fought to fifth in the sister DS, with Sebastien Buemi (Nissan e.dams) producing his second-best result of Season 8 in sixth, Robin Frijns (Envision Racing) seventh and Sam Bird eighth for Jaguar TCS Racing on home soil.

Sergio Sette Camara got his hands on his and DRAGON / PENSKE AUTOSPORT’s first points of the campaign after he ran out of usable energy at the death in Round 13 having hassled the top four throughout. Pascal Wehrlein rounded out the top 10 for the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team.

Londom E-Prix as it happened
The pack emerged from the darkness indoors to the light of the Docklands with Dennis ahead of di Grassi and Giovinazzi clear of da Costa in third. Some contact between Mahindra’s Oliver Rowland and Oliver Askew in the Avalanche Andretti left the former damaged and out, while Vandoorne clipped Wehrlein’s Porsche into the complex on the way to taking 12th. The top nine stood as you were on the grid.

Just 5 minutes after starting, Jean-Eric Vergne’s title challenge looked to have all but ended after contact – the DS TECHEETAH coming to a halt out on-track. This of course brought out the Porsche Taycan Safety Car, electrically powered like the racing cars.

Formula E 2022 London

The 5-minute neutralisation period came to an end on Lap 5 and de Vries took the opportunity to dive for ATTACK MODE – the first driver to do so. Three 4-minute doses of ATTACK MODE were on the menu for Race 2.

Giovinazzi had the elbows out on Lap 7 to fend of da Costa at Turn 2. The DRAGON driver was holding on for everything he’s worth to that third place, with da Costa losing out to de Vries in the scramble.

The first round of ATTACK MODE saw Giovinazzi shuffled to fifth before the Italian was given a drive-through penalty for overpower – frustrating driver and team. The net beneficiary looked to be Evans, who’d worked hard through the field to as high as fifth from 13th. Frustratingly for him, Vandoorne had also made ground to seventh.

Formula E 2022 London

On Lap 14, Dennis led di Grassi with da Costa able to slip beyond de Vries for third with Evans fifth, Buemi sixth, Vandoorne seventh, Wehrlein eighth, Bird ninth and Mortara rounding out the points-paying positions in 10th.

The race leader made the jump for his second 30 kW boost, ceding the lead to di Grassi in the process but the Brit clung on to the back of the Venturi Silver Arrow 02. The lead pair had pulled a 2-second gap on de Vries who’d retaken third from da Costa in the interim.

Formula E 2022 London

Lap 20 saw Evans by da Costa and into fourth, though again, Vandoorne wasn’t far behind in his shadow – the Mercedes driver now sixth. Meanwhile, di Grassi went for his final jump through the ATTACK MODE loop with Dennis holding one in hand. A fascinating tactical battle lay ahead…

The Brazilian tried to pile on the pressure but Dennis defended hard and held the Venturi driver at bay and di Grassi wasn’t quite able to get within range of a move. An overambitious move from Mortara sent his title chances spinning as he tried to make it by Bird for ninth. Vandoorne, meanwhile, was busy consolidating his advantage with a move on da Costa for fifth. Evans now being just a position ahead ensured he wouldn’t eat into the Belgian’s standings margin too significantly.

Formula E 2022 London

With 8 minutes plus one lap to go, di Grassi had done enough to keep in touch with and make it by Dennis’ Andretti when the Brit made his final run through the ATTACK MODE activation loop. That would mean the home favourite would have to pass the wily Brazilian on-track. No easy task.

He’d have to get there first though, as the Venturi man put the hammer down to drive to a 1.5-second lead with FANBOOST employed perfectly. Into TAG Heuer Added time, and Evans’ title hopes took a huge hit – the Kiwi lost himself down the escape road at Customs House with a technical problem and into retirement.

Formula E 2022 London

Di Grassi’s late-race pace saw him take the chequered flag with Dennis unable to hold on to him as the time ticked away. De Vries came home third, ahead of Vandoorne, da Costa and Buemi. Frijns, Bird, Sette Camara and Wehrlein rounded out the top 10.

Evans vs Vandoorne in Seoul
In all reality, it now looks to be a head-to-head between Evans and Vandoorne for the title with 58 points available in a fortnight’s time at the inaugural Hana Bank Seoul E-Prix double-header weekend. The Belgian now holds a commanding 36-point margin over the Jaguar driver in the points table.

The latest Volkswagen Golf 8 R-Line now has a price which starts from RM169,990. The model, one of the versions of the new Golf 8 range launched in February this year, was displayed but at that time, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) did not have a price for it yet. The Golf GTI and Golf R (CBU) are priced from RM214,900 and RM389,990, respectively.

1.4TSI engine with torque-converter AT

Like the Golf GTI, the Golf R-Line is assembled at the Volkswagen facility in the DRB-HICOM manufacturing complex in Pekan, Pahang. Under the bonnet is a 1.4TSI turbocharged engine with an output of 150 ps/280 Nm, mated to an Aisin-supplied 8-speed automatic transmission (the trusty torque converter type) with shift-by-wire control. Fuel consumption is claimed to be 17.2 kms/litre.

The driver can select from 3 driving modes to suit driving conditions or personal preference, and can customise the settings as well.

Apart from the R-Line styling and low C-signature front bumper, the new model comes with 17-inch  Valencia alloy wheels and chrome-effect trapezoid faux exhaust tailpipes.

Better connectivity

The latest Golf generation has enhanced digitalisation in the cockpit with far greater connectivity than before. It also comes with intelligent voice control system to manage various functions. The ‘trigger phrase’ is ‘Hello Volkswagen’ which will ‘wake up’ the system to await a command. Alternatively, pressing a button on the steering wheel also activates the system.

The voice recognition system has been improved from earlier systems and uses digital microphones. The new software has fewer system interfaces than before, and comprehension rate is said to reach a level of around 95%. It recognises whether the driver or the passenger is speaking. which means it can adjust the air conditioning system (to colder or warmer, for example) specifically for the person making the request.

The Golf has always had optimised interior packaging with space for the occupants as a priority. The hatchback offers plenty of room for all the family while, at the rear, is a 381-litre of luggage compartment.

Like the Golf GTI, the Golf R-Line has a tough structure constructed using a combination of high-quality steel extensively engineered to provide maximum occupant protection in the event of an accident. Other key safety features include Electronic Stability Control; Post Collision Braking System that prevents a second collision; Electronic Differential Lock that improves traction and reduce understeer; and 6 airbags at the front and sides.

Customers can choose from a range of 5 colours for the Golf R-Line – Moonstone Grey, Metallic Kings Red, Atlantic Blue (in metallic finishing), Deep Black and Oryx White with pearl effect.

The price includes a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, free scheduled maintenance for the first 3 years of ownership, and complimentary roadside assistance for the first 5 years. To locate a showroom in Malaysia to view and test-drive the new Golf GTI, visit www.volkswagen.com.my.

Starting off as just a little car with simple engineering for ease of construction and low cost, the Mini has evolved over 60 years into a premium product that is design-based and technologically innovative. It has also grown substantially in size but the designers of the modern MINI (capital letters differentiate the original and the modern cars) have stuck to many of the original ideas which Alec Issigonis applied.

Soon, a new generation will be born and as an initial preview of its design, MINI is presenting the Concept Aceman. In this next generation, the MINI Cooper in the iconic 3-door bodystyle, which has been reinterpreted time and again over its entire history, will be joined by a crossover model for the first time.

Over 60 years, the Mini has evolved into a premium and larger model while retaining its original character, even as it moves into an electric future.

MINI Aceman Concept 2022

“The MINI Concept Aceman provides an initial glimpse of a completely new vehicle, bridging the space between the MINI Cooper and the MINI Countryman in the model family’s future,” said Stefanie Wurst, Head of the MINI Brand. “This concept car reflects how MINI is reinventing itself for its all-electric future and what the brand stands for: an electrified go-kart feel, an immersive digital experience and a strong focus on a minimal environmental footprint.”

A new MINI design era
“The design language of the MINI Concept Aceman heralds the beginning of a new design era for MINI,” explained Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design. “Design features typical of the MINI brand have always been unmistakable. We are returning to these now, but at the same time consistently combining them innovative technology. With this approach we are redeveloping the MINI design icons, with all their analogue strengths, for the digital future.”

MINI Aceman Concept 2022

Along with the clear and reduced exterior and interior design, the holistic user experience of light, movement, interaction and sound also combine to define this style. Surfaces constructed from knitted recycled textile with fresh colour contrasts combine with seamless digital controls with a new OLED display as the central interface.

The all-electric models of the next generation are also given an independent sound design for the first time, providing emotionally compelling drive sounds and an authentic background for the new Experience Modes.

Creative use of space reinterpreted
Everything about the appearance of MINI Concept Aceman expresses agility and a self-confident presence. This merges distinctive features of the brand’s two most successful models, the MINI Cooper and the MINI Countryman, to create a modern interpretation of a crossover model.

“The purely electric vehicle concept means the design can again be geared more towards MINI’s traditional basic values, in terms of the principle of using space creatively,” said Oliver Heilmer, Head of MINI Design. “This creates models that take up little space on the road while offering even more comfort, more versatility and more emotion on the inside than ever before.”

MINI Aceman Concept 2022

A functional two-box design with short overhangs creates the maximum of space for occupants and luggage on a minimal surface area. Its exterior dimensions are 4.05 metres in length, a width of 1.99 metres and a height of 1.59 metres. The Concept Aceman has 4 doors and a large boot lid with interior seating for 5. The classic 3-way division of body, all-round window graphics and roof is reinterpreted. A flush transition between the vehicle body and glass surfaces makes the most of the aerodynamic properties.

The clear and reduced design completely dispenses with the chrome trim around the edges that was common in earlier model generations. Wide surrounds on the lower edge of the body, strongly contoured wheel arches, large wheels, a striking roof rack, and front and rear valance panels styled as an underride protection emphasise the solid all-round characteristics of a crossover model.

MINI Aceman Concept 2022

The upright front of the Concept Aceman strikingly announces its presence. The brand’s iconic design features have been reinterpreted to reflect its crossover characteristics and purely electric drive. The radiator grille element at the centre of the vehicle front is surrounded by clear surfaces, the traditionally hexagonal outline having been further refined into an octagonal contour.

The new design is accentuated by an illuminated surround. The LED contour lighting in a shade of light green provides a striking light signature both in daytime running lights and in night design. The central grille element is completely closed with matrix LED units are integrated in its upper section to create impressive lighting effects. The contour of the lights follows through to the surfaces of the outer areas of the bonnet.

MINI Aceman Concept 2022

Clear design and definition
A diagonal contour below the A-pillars will spark memories of the striking weld seam of the classic MINI, for those who are familiar with it. Surface modelling and lines create a tapered effect between the front and rear wheel arches that give a dynamic expression to the side view of the Concept Aceman. This intensively accentuates the powerful profile of the rear wheel arches.

MINI Aceman Concept 2022

These are further defined by distinctive contour lines, the first of their kind on a MINI. Contour lines provide a lively play of light and shadow in the side view; a dynamic upward movement in the front area, an elongated progression and a steep downward swing. A matt green side skirt, more pronounced in the area of the doors, gives the vehicle an athletic appearance.

A typical MINI twist
A typical MINI twist is the oblong hole outline which is a recurring element with many instances, including the door openers – integrated flush with the surface for the first time in a MINI – as well as the exterior mirror caps and the MINI logo in the lower door section.

The design also features in numerous details in the interior. The equally distinctive Union Jack design, acknowledging the brand’s British roots, is seen in both the rear light graphic and on the robust roof rack. The triangular outline in the centre of each rim gives the spokes visual depth and dynamism, a special graphic feature which is generally only noticed on second glance.

In the rear perspective, there us the cascading contour that MINI is known for, gradually broadening towards the road. The dark roof spoiler and the glass surface of the rear window further reinforce this impression by visually receding into the background.

MINI Aceman Concept 2022

The distinctive vertical MINI rear lights provide a captivating contrast to the clear, horizontal surfaces. They also feature matrix LED units, allowing for different lighting scenarios depending on the situation.

MINImalism redefined
The Concept Aceman interior is also dominated by a reduced design with clear contours and carefully executed details. It combines innovative technology with newly interpreted, yet typical MINI design features. The cockpit is consistently reduced to the bare essentials, just as the designer of the classic MINI had in mind in 1959. Alec Issigonis designed an interior which, in addition to the seats, steering wheel and gear lever, needed nothing more than a central round instrument and toggle switch bar.

MINI Aceman Concept 2022

Wide-open and gently curved surfaces in the area of the door panels and the dashboard give a generous feeling of space. The large panoramic glass roof provides an ambience flooded in light. Its glass surface is patterned by the transverse and diagonal struts of the roof rack, whose structure picks up on the Union Jack flag motif, a reminded of the brand’s origins when looking upwards from within.

MINI Aceman Concept 2022

The MINI cockpit
The dashboard is a flat design element styled like a sound bar that extends across the entire width of the interior in front of the driver’s and front passenger’s seats. Its soft knitted textile surfaces create a modern and homey atmosphere. The dashboard is connected via a support structure which, like the roof rack, displays the Union Jack pattern.

The centre interface combines all the functions of the instrument cluster and the on-board monitor as a round OLED display. True to its traditions, a toggle switch bar is set below the large screen. There are both touch controls using state-of-the-art digitalisation and analogue physical switches, depending on the function.

MINI Aceman Concept 2022

The redesigned toggle switches operate the parking brake, select gears, activate and deactivate the drive, select Experience Modes and adjust the audio system volume. Each toggle is individually designed as a rotary knob or toggle switch for the most intuitive operation.

The distinctive MINI display and operating experience scales new heights with its reinterpretation of the familiar central interface. MINI is the world’s first car manufacturer to present a circular OLED display that takes up the entire surface of the central interface. OLED technology gives the display a particularly high-quality appearance and can display strong contrasts and deep blacks.

The user interface also features a completely new graphic display, a modern layout and attractively designed widgets. The display and control system in the production model will be based on the latest generation of the MINI Operating System which, for the first time, is built on an Android Open-Source Project software stack. This allows for an unprecedented and particularly comprehensive expansion of digital features in the vehicle.

MINI Aceman Concept 2022

Experience Modes
Innovative Experience Modes generate new possibilities to individualise and personalise the driving experience in the interior. They combine specific displays and colour worlds, which are depicted on the central interface panel and through interior projection, and a coordinated sound stage.

Chrome elements are completely dispensed with – not only in the exterior but also inside. Instead, the dashboard support structure creates its own high-quality, individual highlight in the interior, with its iridescent coating matching the roof support for example.

MINI Aceman Concept 2022

The steering wheel, like the seats, door panels and all other interior surfaces, is leather-free. The steering wheel rim is laminated with dark green velvet velour, giving a particularly pleasant feel. The multifunction buttons are integrated under backlit textile surfaces and the ‘Aceman’ lettering and a robust strap form the 6 o’clock spoke of the steering wheel.

The Concept Aceman will make its first public appearance Gamescom 2022, the world’s largest gaming event to be held in Cologne, Germany next month.

The races in the Vios Challenge one-makes series typically take around 25 to 30 minutes around half the Sepang International Circuit but with the GR Vios Sprint Cup, the drivers race for up to an hour and they circulate on the full course of 5.534 kms. The extended time and number of laps made things more challenging and exciting and the lead changed multiple times from start to finish in the first race yesterday.

The first ever running GR Vios Sprint Cup saw a total of 18 cars with 36 drivers. Starting from pole position was S&D Tama Motorsports’ Freddie Ang but his leading position was lost by the very first corner to Boy Wong of Axle Motorsports, with Tengku Djan (Prima Pearl TD Racing) following.

2022 GR VIOS SPRINT CUP

From fourth on the grid, veteran racer Tengku Djan paced himself, picking off the front-runners one at a time before positioning himself as high as second by lap 10, 30 minutes into the race. At this time, the pit window opened for a driver change.

“As the pit window presented itself, we considered the overall race strategy and decided that it was just the right time to pit for a tyre and driver change. With the car running hot, it was better to make a pit-stop and take that chance to cool the car down, cool the tyres down before going back on track to attack again,” said the eventual winner.

2022 GR VIOS SPRINT CUP

“It’s a one-hour race and it’s a lot more stressful. Fitness definitely plays a role and it was definitely hot today as well. For example, in a race where everyone is on identical cars, I close the windows on my car so I get better aerodynamic efficiency… but that means you’re essentially cooking in the car and without fitness, you will mentally breakdown,” he explained.

Of his younger team mate Mika Hakimi, Tengku Djan said: “Mika has proven himself in the GAZOO Racing Young Driver Development Program last year and had some really good races in the Rookie Class. After a few sessions preparing for the Vios Sprint Cup, he came straight up to the pace. The pace is definitely there but there are some areas he will need to look into for example a little more aggression so that he can pressure the car in front more efficiently.”

2022 GR VIOS SPRINT CUP

With the final 30 minutes of the race unfolding, Prima Pearl TD Racing’s fate was left in the hands of the 19 year old driver. “In these kinds of races, you really have to pick your battles and that’s precisely what I did. I told myself that I would only go all out in the final two laps. I wanted to close the gap on Nabil immediately after taking over from Djan but it was better to just let the battle between Nabil and Goh play out ahead of me and save my tyres for the end,” Mika said after the race.

He put in a great drive in what was to be a game of nerves. From third, he had quickly challenged Tom Goh (the second driver for S&D Tama Motorsports) for second position before setting his sights on the lead – a move that no one anticipated, and would not come until the final few corners of the last lap. “When you have Djan as your team mate, you really need to be on your top form!” he added.

2022 GR VIOS SPRINT CUP

Finishing second clearly disappointed was Nabil Azlan (Axle Motorsports) who made a crucial mistake in the last lap. “I made a mistake in shifting gears. I am really sorry to the team because we could have won it. At the exit of turn 2, I wanted to shift into 3rd gear but I accidentally went into 1st,” said the 20-year-old, also a graduate of UMW Toyota Motor’s GAZOO Racing Young Driver Development Program. “I’m happy that I showed by pace here today but disappointed that I could not finish first.”

For third place winner Goh, meanwhile, starting from pole position was an incredible boost considering the tough competition he and team mate Ang were in. “The Vios Sprint Cup is a really exciting format, especially with the compulsory pit stop and driver change. I was hoping to win from pole position, but Mika and Nabil were really super fast and all I could do was to try to defend as best as I can,” said Tom.

2022 GR VIOS SPRINT CUP

The second part of the GR Vios Sprint Cup, which is held in conjunction with the Malaysia Championship Series (MCS), is on today. Total prize monies amount to RM60,000, and the overall champion in each of the 2 races at the GR Vios Sprint Cup stands to win RM10,000 in cash.

UMW Toyota Motor is also putting up an additional RM30,000 in prize monies for its Toyota dealer teams making the GR Vios Sprint Cup the second most lucrative racing event in Malaysia next to the Vios Challenge.

With pandemic-related restrictions now eased, spectators are allowed to be at the racetrack to watch the race. Or you can also watch the live broadcasts at UMW Toyota Motor’s Facebook page from the comfort of home. Click here for more information on GAZOO Racing Malaysia’s activities.

UMW Toyota Motor starts GAZOO Racing Young Talent Development Program

During this festive season, millions of motorists are travelling up and down the highways. Most will reach their destinations safely and enjoy the reunion with family and friends, or the long-awaited holiday.

But there will be some who are unfortunate to have an accident, or their vehicle has a breakdown along the way. That certainly would spoil things but for those who have insurance coverage from Allianz, things won’t be so bad as they will be able to get assistance easily from the Allianz Road Rangers. All they need to do is call 1800-22-5542 (24/7).

Free service
The Allianz Road Rangers are a support team which provides roadside assistance for cars as well as motorcycles. It’s available free of charge to policyholders of vehicles registered for private use and for motorcycles with comprehensive insurance policies.

Between April 30 and May 8, the Allianz Road Rangers will be stationed around several R&Rs along the North-South Expressway, Kuala Lumpur–Karak Expressway and East Coast Expressway which have seen the highest volumes of traffic.

Specifically, the R&Rs are at Gurun (Kedah), Tapah (Perak), Ulu Bernam (Tanjung Malim, Perak), Ayer Keroh (Melaka), Yong Peng (Johor), Genting Sempah (Karak Highway), Gambang and Maran (Pahang), Gua Musang (Kelantan), and Paka Arah (Kuala Terengganu).

First such iniative by Allianz
“This is a first of such an initiative. We know how everyone has been looking forward to celebrating this Hari Raya Aidilfitri and will be travelling to their hometowns and out of the Klang Valley. So, we have mobilised our tow-trucks from our Allianz Road Ranger fleet to be strategically located to assist our customers,” said Allianz General Chief Claims Officer, Damian Williams.

“Our goal with this initiative is to reach customers as quickly as possible when they need assistance and to help make their journey a smooth one,”  he added.

Comprehensive assistance provided
The Allianz Road Rangers began in 2017, initially operating in the Klang Valley before going nationwide. Besides having their own Allianz-branded tow trucks, the team also has a first-responder bike team to reach motorists faster. They can provide initial assistance and first aid if needed.

The Allianz Road Ranger fleet includes a motorcycle team to reach the vehicle earlier and provide initial assistance before the tow-truck arrives.

Other benefits from Allianz include a claims concierge service at police stations, e-hailing transportation services, Allianz Motor Own Damage (OD) claims and vehicle delivery. Damaged vehicles will be brought to an Allianz Authorised Panel Repairer or to a franchise workshop upon request. Motorists can also specify a preferred location to send the vehicle to (within the specific distance) instead of having to collect it from the panel workshop.

The entire Allianz Road Rangers journey — from accident assistance service to claims, vehicle repairs, and the selection of workshop repairers — is a structured and transparent service. The service is among the initiatives taken by the company to prevent corrupt and unethical practices that occur in the insurance industry.

A good insurance company makes a difference when you have an accident

‘Jinba-ittai’ – the unity between a horse and its rider – is something which Mazda engineers make sure is in every model that the company sells. It’s what makes a Mazda enjoyable to drive and the MX-5 Miata shows it best. Yet, in the spirit of kaizen (Japanese for constant improvement), the engineers believe they can make it still better and for the 2022 model, they have given attention to reducing body roll further.

Body roll can be good as well as bad, and it does in some ways provide the driver with feedback during fast cornering. To reduce the roll and achieve a flatter cornering attitude, the engineers have come up with a new system called Kinematic Posture Control (KPC), which uses braking to reduce body roll. While it uses braking forces like torque vectoring, it works on a different principle to generate a downward pull on the inside rear suspension.

This ‘anti-lift’ force pulls the car’s body down when the brakes are applied, thereby suppressing roll and optimising the posture when cornering. This takes into account the rear suspension control arms swinging rearwards while rising as the suspension compresses. Likewise, when the suspension moves towards the back, which happens under braking, it also moves upwards.

The difference between KPC and torque vectoring is that KPC does not rely on driver input to react. It functions when it senses the difference in speed between the two rear wheels while going round a curve. This enhanced stability, especially when cornering hard and fast, makes the MX-5’s handling even better while also improving ride comfort.

Apart from KPC, which doesn’t add any weight, the latest MX-5 RF has the same specs and features as last year’s model. The rear-wheel drive roadster is powered by the proven SKYACTIV-G 2-litre engine with a 181 bhp/205 Nm output. Customers have a choice of 6-speed automatic or manual transmission, with the latter having a top speed of 220 km/h, 20 km/h more than the automatic.

Mazda’s suite of active safety systems is known as i-Activsense and consists of Adaptive LED Headlights, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Driver Attention Alert and Lane Departure Warning. There is also Smart City Brake Support which is an autonomous emergency braking system that uses a laser sensor mounted at the top of the windscreen. The brakes will be applied automatically if the driver does not take the right action when a frontal collision is likely.

The 6 colour choices are Soul Red Crystal, Machine Gray, Snowflake White Pearl, Polymetal Gray, Deep Crystal Blue and Jet Black. Pricing starts from RM265,964 (with 50% Sales Tax Reduction until June 30, 2022). Warranty coverage is for 5 years/100,000 kms (whichever occurs first after registration) and Bermaz also includes free scheduled maintenance for the first 5 years (or maximum of 100,000 kms).

How Bose has been developing premium sound for Mazdas over 30 years

If Sir Alec Issigonis was designing the original Mini today, chances are it would have an electric motor. When it was launched in 1959, it was not just a little car but one which saved fuel at a time when there was an oil shortage caused by the Suez Crisis. Within its small footprint, creative use was made of the available space to accommodate four persons with their luggage.

The original Mini showed creative use of space in a small car.

Living on in a sustainable way
Although the original Mini was retired and its succeeding generations have charted a new course for the model, many units still exist around the world. With the MINI Recharged project which converts classic Minis to electric drive, the Mini legacy continues in the 21st century in a sustainable way.

The conversion of classic Minis to an electric drive combines traditional values with future-oriented technology. The idea was born even before the carmaker had a fully electric car. As a one-off, a classic Mini Electric was built in 2018 and presented at the New York Auto Show. The reactions were so positive that a dedicated team from MINI Plant Oxford set to work and developed the plan to offer a conversion to those who had the original Mini.

Changes are ‘reversible’ later on
To experience traditional go-kart handling with an emission-free drivetrain, the original petrol engine of the classic Mini is replaced by a modern electric drive. Only reversible changes are made to the substance of the car during the conversion as part of MINI Recharged. Careful handling of the historical heritage is an important part of the concept.

This makes it possible to restore the classic Mini to its original condition at a later date. During the conversion, the original engine of each vehicle is marked and stored so it can be reused in the event of a future retrofit of the classic Mini.

The MINI Recharged project means a vehicle’s life can be extended in a sustainable way. A classic Mini can now be given a new lease of life, accompanying its owner into the future, whilst maintaining its much-loved heritage. The drive is a modern electric motor that generates a continuous output of up to 90 kW and accelerates the electrified classic Mini from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 9 seconds.

The energy is supplied by a high-voltage battery pack, which can be charged with an output of up to 6.6 kW for a range estimated to be around 160 kms. In addition, every electrified classic Mini from MINI Recharged receives the characteristic central instrument cluster, familiar since the early days of the model, but with displays showing the drive temperature, the selected gear, range and speed.

A whole new driving experience
The Mini has been well known as loved for its go-kart character and with the MINI Recharged, that zippiness will still be available with instant acceleration and an almost silent drivetrain. And while original Minis with combustion engines cannot enter the electric or low-emission driving zones of many large cities in Europe, this electrified Mini will be allowed to do so. Thus its owners will be able to drive along the streets of London just like the original owners in the Swinging Sixties and once again be part of the cityscape, without the driver having to pay an environmental tax (congestion charge) beforehand.

The original fuel filler point for petrol (inset) is replaced by a charging port on the Mini Recharged.

In addition, the converted car does not need a new registration (such a conversion is not allowed in Malaysia, which the JPJ has made clear). This, in a way, fits in the aspect of circular economy which the BMW Group promotes. For this project, no new vehicles are being produced and are created from much-loved, existing cars. It allows an original Mini to carry on in a second, more sustainable life.

Today, one in five new MINI models has an electrified drive and now the MINI Recharged project will allow the love of the brand’s classic vehicles to become an experience combining the past and the future.

The modern MINI Electric has been available in Malaysia since 2020 and can be purchased tax-free for the next few years.
