The Mirai, Toyota’s electric vehicle powered by a hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV) has started its second generation with its  market launch in Japan, on schedule, today.  The company had given an early glimpse of the new model a year ago at the Tokyo Motorshow and said it would begin selling the car by the end of 2020.

After beginning serious development of FCEVs in 1992, the Mirai’s predecessor was launched in 2014 and was a revolutionary model. Like the Prius hybrid, it was a global forerunner in mass production of FCEVs. However, it was sold only in a limited number of markets where hydrogen refuelling stations were available.

Feedback from customers indicated that more seating space was desired, so the new Mirai has space for 5 persons instead of 4. Its cruising range has also been increased by approximately 30% compared to the first generation, with up to 650 kms claimed.

Also following the way the Prius design evolved, the new Mirai’s appearance is less radical and has been given a more premium image. The concept of ‘silent dynamism’ was incorporated into the design with the aim of creating an emotional appeal not just because it is an eco-car, but because of its styling.

Sleeker, less radical styling
The new Mirai has sleeker proportions with overall height by 65 mm and 140 mm added to the wheelbase to extend it to 2920 mm. With the rear overhang extended by 85 mm, overall vehicle length is now 4975 mm.

“We have pursued the goal of making a car that customers will feel they want to drive all time, a car that has an emotional and attractive design and the kind of dynamic and responsive performance that can bring a smile to the driver’s face,” said Yoshikazu Tanaka, the new Mirai’s Chief Engineer who also headed the team for the development of the first generation.

“I want customers to say ‘I chose the Mirai not just because it’s an FCEV, but because I simply wanted this car; it just happens to be an FCEV.’ We will continue our development work focusing on that feeling, and we hope that with the new Mirai, we will be a leader in helping realise a hydrogen energy society,” he added.

Simple, modern cabin
The interior has been conceived as a simple, modern space with a warm, comfortable. Key elements include a 12.3-inch centre display and an instrument panel that wraps around the driver. As the Mirai runs only with an electric motor, there is no engine vibration or noise and with the enhanced body rigidity and additional soundproofing measures, the low level of quietness is significant.

A Toyota innovation is the catalyst-type filter is incorporated in the air intake. As air is drawn into the car to supply the fuel cell, an electric charge on the non-woven fabric filter element captures microscopic particles of pollutants, including sulphur dioxide, nitrous oxides and PM 2.5 particulates. The system is effective in removing 90 to 100% of particles between 0 and 2.5 microns in diameter from the air as it passes into the fuel cell system.

The Mirai sits on the TNGA-based GA-L platform which is intended for high-end rear-wheel-drive vehicles. The structures of various parts including the rear have been redesigned to create greatly enhanced body rigidity. This has a positive effect on ride and handling, enhancing driving dynamics and comfort.

The more rigid body also contributes to better occupant protection and with advanced driver assistance systems, the Mirai offers higher standards of motoring safety than before with the latest Toyota Safety Sense suite.

The driver assist functions are based on the Mobility Teammate Concept, a unique Toyota concept for automated driving whereby the car and driver act as partners to enhance each other’s capabilities and drive together. AI technology is used with on deep learning capability to forecast various situations that may be encountered while driving and provide support for driver responses.

Since launching the first generation 6 years ago, hydrogen use for mobility has progressed widely to include trucks and buses. Toyota has continued to improve and advance its fuel cell (FC) systems in areas such as size, efficiency, and productivity.

There are three tanks which together increase the fuel capacity by around 1 kg (compared to the first generation), increasing hydrogen capacity by approximately 20% which, in turn, extends range. One of the tanks is now installed inside the floor tunnel space, which also helps in weight distribution for better stability and handling.

Though the Mirai is also powered by electricity, the hydrogen it uses can be pumped in much faster than the fastest recharging time for an electric vehicle which can be up to 25 minutes. The FCEV is said to be able to fully refuel in about 3 minutes from high-pressure pumps, certainly something that will appeal to potential buyers.

Compact and more powerful FC system

The compact, high-output FC stack is located in what is traditionally the ‘engine compartment’ but the motor and battery are at the rear. Toyota’s new FC stack and fuel cell power converter (FCPC) have been developed specifically for use with the GA-L platform. The designers have been able to bring all the elements together in the stack frame with each part made smaller and lighter, while at the same time improving performance.

The FC stack uses a solid polymer, as in the current Mirai, but has been made smaller and has fewer cells (330 instead of 370). Nonetheless, it sets a new record for specific power density at 5.4 kW/litre as maximum power has risen from 114 kW to 128 kW. Cold weather performance is also said to have been improved with start-up now possible at temperatures from as low as -30˚.

The car is equipped with lithium-ion high-voltage battery in place of the previous nickel-metal hydride unit. Although smaller in size, it is more energy-dense, giving higher output and superior environmental performance. Containing 84 cells, it has a 310.8 rated voltage compared to 244.8, and a 4.0 Ah capacity, versus 6.5 Ah. Overall weight has been reduced from 46.9 to 44.6 kgs.

Aiming for higher sales volumes
The introduction of the new Mirai will see Toyota target deeper market penetration with a 10-fold expansion in sales volume. To achieve this, the carmaker has adjusted the price downwards by around 20%. In Japan, where two grades are offered, prices start from 7,100,000 yen (about RM277,200) while the pricing in Europe is expected to start from 64,000 euros (about RM316,000) which is less than what Tesla charges for its similarly-sized EV.

Of course, actual prices customers pay will depend on incentives and rebates that governments in different countries offer. As with hybrids, the acceptance of FCEVs will depend on how much they are sold for and right now, with the advanced technologies being new, they are expensive. Therefore, governments have to help to make them affordable while the carmakers boost volumes so that economies of scale can kick in to lower costs. This has already happened with hybrids and next would be EVs, before FCEVs.

There is also the matter of refuelling stations which is an even greater challenge because it involves hydrogen supply. Even with plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and full EVs, the issue of recharging stations has been one that consumers think about. This is being addressed by rapid expansion of the recharging station network in some countries, as well as the improvements in technology to provide longer range.

Don’t expect it in Malaysia anytime soon
Vehicles with petrol and diesel engines will be phased out eventually and in fact, they will be banned in some countries, including Japan, by the end of the decade. It’s uncertain how the situation will be in Malaysia given the instability of policies and the way they are executed. The aspiration to become the ‘EV hub of ASEAN’ is pretty much a dream, especially the governments of Thailand and Indonesia are already pushing ahead with clearly-defined programs to increase EV usage, which attracts some of the carmakers to make further investments as well.

The original Range Rover was launched in 1969 and final production took place in 1996. It has come to be known as the Classic Range Rover and can be regarded as the first premium 4×4 (the ‘SUV’ term didn’t exist then). Well-kept units are collectors items and with the engineering having been robust, they remain capable vehicles even today.

Electrifying classic models
For those who want the Classic Range Rover, there is also a new source from Lunaz, a company in England that specialises in making electric classic cars. Lunaz has earlier ‘electrified’ Jaguar, Bentley and Rolls-Royce classics and now intends to also create an initial run of 50 original Range Rovers built in the ‘classic era’ between 1970 and 1994.

Since unveiling its electrified classics, Lunaz has received requests from customers to apply its re-engineering and restoration approach to the Range Rover. In response to this, the company has decided to offer two versions – the ‘Town’ and ‘Country’ specifications – which can be delivered in mid-2021.

The more urban expression of these cars will be presented with increased focus on rear-seat and driver comfort, reflecting their dual use as either self-driven luxury vehicles or chauffeured cars. They will be available in both standard and long wheelbase and either the classic 3-door configuration or the 4-door models.

Lunaz has been converting these other classic models with electric powertrains. These include the Jaguar XK120 (below).

Modern engineering, classic looks
The ‘Country’ specification will include a full suite of engineering, technological and design features that augment a full electric classic off-roading experience for the first time. Every vehicle Lunaz produces goes through a full bare metal restoration and re-engineering process ahead of conversion to the company’s proprietary electric powertrain. This approach allows Lunaz to answer the questions of usability and reliability that detract from the experience of owning the most celebrated classic cars in the world.

The electric classic Range Rovers will include a 4-wheel drive system, updated suspension including anti-roll bars and uprated brakes. Within the cabin, the pure utility of the original interior design will be significantly elevated. The Lunaz design philosophy balances the integration of technology and usability within a classic architecture.

Design Director Jen Holloway and her team will work in close consultation with customers to tailor the car to their exact requirements. Material palettes that honour the textile interior that debuted on the original classic Range Rover will be offered as well as more traditional upholstery options with the very finest leathers and woods.

Usability is further enhanced with the inclusion of a full suite of contemporary technologies. Modern conveniences and features will include an infotainment system, air conditioning and entertainment screens integrated into the existing design scheme to ensure the spirit of the original car is maintained.

Not so with the classic electric Range Rovers by Lunaz which are expected to start at £245,000 (about RM1.33 million), ex-factory. This is the price of exclusivity and being one of 50 owners in the world.

While the Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team won the Manufacturers category in the 2020 World Really Championship (WRC), Sebastien Ogier of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing WRT which took the Drivers title this year at the conclusion of the season in Italy

The 36-year old French driver has won titles in 7 WRCs since starting becoming an active participant in 2008. This year, with co-driver Julien Ingrassia, he used a Toyota Yaris WRC for the first time. He has previously driven in the Citroen, M-Ford and Volkswagen teams.

The Frenchman is the fifth different driver in 30 years to win the WRC title driving a Toyota, reclaiming the crown after Ott Tanak won the championship with the team in 2019. Toyota’s Elfyn Evans, also in his first season with Toyota, was on track to take the season’s driving honours until he slid off the road on an incredibly slippery right-hander on Saturday. He finished second in the championship. Ogier made it through to Sunday’s conclusion with a final margin of 13.9 seconds in a demanding rally with winter conditions that made driving treacherous.

“I feel the team would also have deserved to win the Manufacturers’ title; we fought as three drivers against five and came so close. But this seventh title for me is also a big achievement for the team and I couldn’t have done it without them, so thank you to them and I’m looking forward already to this bonus season for my career in 2021,” he said.

The event was the last one that Tommi Makinen, a former WRC champion, will have a role as team principal. Next year, he becomes Motorsport Advisor to Toyota. Team chairman Akio Toyoda congratulated Ogier and Ingrassia on their victory, expressed his consolation to Evans and paid tribute to Makinen who he said would continue supporting Toyota to make ever-better cars.

“Thanks to Tommi, we were also able to develop the GR Yaris,” the Toyota President said. “He led us to change our way of making cars through participating in the WRC.”

The 2020-2021 Japan Car of the Year is the Subaru Levorg, giving the Japanese carmaker its third overall title in the event which has been on since 1980. The Levorg was chosen this year’s list of nominees numbering 33, of which 13 were from Japanese brands and the remainder from other global manufacturers.

From the 33 nominees, which must be new models introduced and sold in the Japanese market from November 2019 to October 31 of the current year (in this case, 2020), ten models were chosen as the ‘Ten Best Cars’. These were considered the finalists, from which one would become the Japan Car of the Year after the judges had evaluated all of them.

The Levorg impressed the judging panel with its combination of the Subaru Global Platform and the full inner frame structure which provides a high level of both maneuverability and comfort. The newly developed 1.8-litre direct-injection turbocharged engine was also found to emphasize ease of use in everyday life. The judges also found that the interior had evolved significantly, with the finish being a suitable benchmark for this decade. Also praised was the advanced driver assistance system ‘EyeSight X’ that utilizes 3D high-precision map data and other information from GPS.

Among the non-Japanese brands, the highest score went to the Peugeot 208/e-208. Comments from the judges highlighted the high-quality ride that is above class-average and excellent handling. The high quality of the interior and exterior design as well as the good pricing of the e-208 EV also scored points.

The Mitsubishi eK X Space and eK Space Win also won K-Car of the Year, a new category of the 2020-2021 Car of the Year awards.

A festive season usually includes giving to those less fortunate and this year, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) and PichaEats teamed up to deliver a total of 280 meals to the less fortunate, in efforts to drive kindness this festive season.

The ‘Driving Kindness’ convoy consisted of employees from VPCM and PichaEats, a catering company that specializes in preparing meals from the homeland of its chefs who come from Syria, Palestine, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Recipients of the Driving Kindness campaign were Hiichiikok Foundation, Trinity Community Children’s Home, Lighthouse Children’s Welfare Home, Sunteck Handicap Welfare Home and Charis Sheep Pen Shelter, all located in Klang Valley.

Additionally, as a show of support to frontliners, a total of 100 meals were delivered to the doctors and nurses at the COVID-19 testing station at Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

In the spirit of giving, five families and individuals were also presented with a PichaEats Christmas Family set. The respective parties were selected through a Facebook contest held last month which invited netizens to nominate those going through tough times and deserved a special meal as a show of love and appreciation.

“Christmas is the season of giving, and it is a privilege to be able to give back to the community and to the less fortunate. The year has been extremely challenging for everyone, and it is so important to stay connected, be kind and to give back whenever possible,” said Erik Winter, Managing Director of VPCM.

“The Volkswagen group has been committed to aiding refugees via numerous social platforms since 2015, and here we are honoured to partner with the charismatic team at PichaEats, who are doing an amazing job creating opportunities for refugees in Malaysia,” he added.

“At PichaEats, we are all about making an impact. For this Christmas and year-end season, we especially wanted to emphasize the idea of bringing joy and spreading kindness to the community at large. It was a pleasure working with Volkswagen Malaysia to realize this, who were all for putting a smile on the faces of those who needed some good cheer,” said Kim Lim, CEO and co-founder of PichaEats.

The meals were delivered by volunteers who used their own Volkswagen vehicles – two Beetles and two Kombi vans – as well as vehicles provided by VPCM.

Goodyear Malaysia has strengthened its range of Ultra-High Performance (UHP) tyres with the addition of the Eagle F1 Sport. The new tyre is described as ‘a fun sports tyre option with good handling and braking performance for the aspiring racing enthusiast’.

The Eagle F1 Sport tyre is said to provide improved handling and braking performance, and would be an option for upsizing. Its strong points are increased steering response, improved dry handling and enhanced cornering abilities.  Compared to the Eagle F1 Directional 5, the Eagle F1 Sport has 20% less rolling resistance, with tyre weight reduced by up to 14%.

Precise and responsive handling
The signature Eagle Claw tread design has stronger shoulder blocks and  with ActiveControl Technology, the shoulder contact patch of the tyre is maximised. Increased stiffness improves the cornering stability and steering precision when negotiating bends and corners.

The Eagle F1 Sport is also a quiet tyre, thanks to noise barrier strips which are made of rubber. They are positioned between the ply and liner to reduce noise generation. Narrower lateral grooves on the tyre also help to reduce vibrations and road noise for improved comfort.

Superior braking performance
Complementing the handling qualities is good stopping power with Goodyear’s DynamicBraking Technology. The combination of the Eagle Claw tread and high silica loaded tread compound with upgraded polymer matrix enhances braking capabilities on both wet and dry surfaces. Furthermore, an improved cavity shape provides a wider footprint for better contact and pressure distribution.

Wide rim flange protectors on all sizes provide protection to the tyre and rim from accidental curb damages while manoeuvring and parking.

It was to be a pit-stop to make a precautionary change of tyres as the signs were good that George Russell could win the Sakhir GP. But it turned out to be a bungled move that not only ultimately took away the chances of the driver who was driving in place of Lewis Hamilton, but it would cost the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Team 20,000 euros (about RM98,700) as well.

The pit crews practice and practice to get the stop down to seconds and these days, without refuelling, the car can be in and out in less than 4 seconds. Red Bull Racing holds the record – 1.88 seconds to changed 4 tyres. But the Sakhir GP presented new conditions that required quick decisions as each lap was less than a minute and it is believed that the sudden decision to make the precautionary change had created a bit of confusion, compounded by Valtteri Bottas also coming in.

Mix-up rectified a lap later
Russell’s car received a mixed set of tyres – two of which were the front ones for Bottas’ car – and when the mistake was realized, he was already zooming off so it was another minute before he could be brought back in to rectify the error. Fortunately, it was less than a minute to do a circuit of the track. But he was no longer within sight of the front of the pack where Sergio Perez was on his way to his first F1 win – which could also have been Russell’s.

But the 22-year old who had been released from Williams Racing at the request of the Mercedes-AMG team showed that he had the determination to win and though he was just out of points range, he managed to fight his way back up to ninth when the race ended, getting the first 2 points of his F1 career plus 1 point for the fastest lap of the 87-lap race (55.4 seconds).

Russell did everything he was instructed to do and drove a fine race, demonstrating how good he can be if he has the right car with the right resources. He must have been focused on not making a bad impression in any way so he could not, as Hamilton did in the Turkish BP, ignore the unplanned precautionary pit stop and keep his leading position. Hamilton had been asked to come in 2 laps before the end of the Turkish and chose not to.

The pit crews train hard to change all four tyres within less than 3 seconds (the record is 1.88 seconds).

‘Incorrect use of tyres’ offence
The offence committed was described as ‘incorrect use of tyres’ and the Stewards learnt that it was caused by a radio communications technical issue wherein the pit wall’s communication to the pit crew that Car 63 (Russell) was entering the pits prior to (and not after) Car 77 (Bottas), failed to be received by the crew of Car 63 because at the same time, the driver of Car 63 transmitted over the top of that message.  This resulted in the front tyres of Car 77 accidentally going onto Car 63, as the cars were ‘double stacked’ at the time.

The offence would normally involve a sporting penalty up to Disqualification but the Stewards also considered mitigating circumstances, besides the radio issue. It was noted that the team rectified the problem within 1 lap. Perhaps it was considered to be enough ‘penalty’ that both cars dropped down in classification.

The Stewards also pointed out that one of the regulations which was thought to be applicable was not actually catered for but considered to be similar in nature. However, the responsibility to fit tyres in compliance with the regulations, still rests with the team and therefore a penalty had to be imposed.

The Stewards have recommended that the FIA consider amending the regulation to accommodate this type of situation when it is rectified without delay. It is noted that this type of mix-up has not previously been experienced in Formula 1.

♦ Prior to the start of the race, Lando Norris (McLaren) had his starting position moved to the back from 15th position as his car had an engine change.

♦ The two Mercedes-AMG cars got a great start, with George Russell just sneaking ahead of Valtteri Bottas. But for Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez clashed in the first corner and Max Verstappen couldn’t avoid them. The Dutchman and Leclerc ended up heading straight for the barriers and ending their race, while Perez got away.

♦ The Safety Car was immediately sent out and it was Russell who was right behind it as it circulated for 6 laps. In second place was Bottas and then Carlos Sainz. While Bottas would have been determined to get into the lead, he was too busy keeping back Sainz to close the gap on Russell.

♦ Although way back in the field, the two newcomers racing in F1 for the first time – Pietro Fittipaldi and Jack Aitken – were aggressively trying to improve their positions, taking on even Kimi Raikkonen.

 

♦ By the 22nd lap, Bottas was able to extend the gap with Sainz to 11 seconds and focussed on his team mate who was 2 seconds ahead. However, his team said that he was having brake problems too.

♦ The first 6 laps with the Safety Car out had an effect on tyre degradation which was less than what was forecast, pls track temperatures were also cool. As a result, team strategists began to consider the possibility of a one-stop race. Even up to 40 laps, the first 4 cars had not come in for new tyres.

♦ With lap times under a minute, the halfway mark in the 87-lap race was reached about 43 minutes after start. It would have been earlier if not the for slow-down by the Safety Car at the start.

♦ Russell finally came in on lap 46 for new tyres, letting Bottas take over the lead. But as the British driver returned to the track after less than 3 seconds out, he found that the car was down on power. The cause was later said to be a sensor issue but seemed to go away and he rocketed ahead to close the gap – and set fastest lap.

♦ Bottas had earlier been asked to extend the time out another 9 laps and came in on lap 50, giving back the lead to Russell.

♦ Nicholas Latifi’s race ended on lap 54 as he pulled over, bringing out the Virtual Safety Car for about 2 laps to allow retrieval of the Williams car.

♦ Perez put in an impressive drive; after escaping the Verstappen-Leclerc crash and then coming into the pits, he worked his way up the field to reach third by lap 59. He still have Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll close behind but the gap was too big to go for Bottas.

♦ The Virtual Safety Car would come out again another 4 minutes later when Aitken’s car lost its wing after a spin and bumping in the barrier. Aitken’s incident would later be seen as the event that changed the outcome of the race.

♦ Both Russell and Bottas slipped into the pits and then disaster struck for Bottas as his stop was 10 times longer than the usual sub-3 seconds! And in the confusion, Russell got wrong tyres, which could mean a penalty for having a mixed set. It was a heartbreaking time for the team while Perez appeared to be secure in the lead as 18 laps remained.

♦ On lap 71,  with new tyres, Russell pushed hard to get past Bottas and then set his sights on Stroll, who was less than  2 second ahead. Commentators had checked the rules and it seemed that the mixed tyres might not bring a penalty.

♦  With 10 laps remaining, Russell got past Ocon and was in second place, gunning for Perez who was about 2 seconds ahead. And then a puncture on the rear left wheel forced the Mercedes-AMG driver back to the pits… and when he rejoined the race, he was in 15th position.

♦ With a sufficiently wide gap, Perez sped through the remaining laps to win the second last round of 2020. And it was a 1-3 for the BWT Racing Point team too as Stroll finished third, behind Ocon. For Russell, who managed to get at least a point (as well as another for fastest lap) as he managed to get up to ninth before the chequered flag came out, it’s just a tiny consolation.

 

 

 

 

Even before the increased activity in simulator racing this year, BMW Motorsport has been an active participant in the world of virtual racing. Its presence at such online events help to actively promote the industry with innovations in the hardware that forms part of its holistic involvement.

Recently, BMW Motorsport SIM Racing took the transfer of technology between real and virtual racing to a totally new level with three world premieres at its digital BMW SIM event. The BMW M4 GT3, which is set to become the new flagship in the BMW M Customer Racing range of racing cars from 2022, made its debut on the iRacing sim racing platform as a prototype ahead of its first real race outing.

The steering wheel in the BMW M4 GT3 has been developed in cooperation with Fanatec and is the first of its kind to work in both a racing car and a race simulator.

The third global innovation is the concept study of the Fusion SL sim lounge furniture. In just a few simple steps, it can be converted from a designer table into a fully-fledged race simulator.

“With BMW Motorsport SIM Racing, we are following a 360-degree approach. This means that we have our eye on the big picture,” said Rudolf Dittrich, Head of BMW Motorsport SIM Racing. “We have achieved an awful lot in the first year of our involvement. At the same time, we have also identified great potential and, based on that, have decided to continue to focus strongly on hardware developments in 2021, with which we can promote technical innovations and develop new product categories and markets.”

BMW Motorsport has collaborated with sim racing hardware producer, Fanatec, to develop a steering wheel for the M4 GT3 that can be used in both a real racing car and a race simulator> It’s technology transfer which has never been seen before in motor racing. Absolutely no modifications are required for it to be used in the racing car.

The carbonfibre steering wheel has a typical motorsport design, with illuminated buttons and magnetic, dual-action shift paddles also made of carbonfibre. The fact that the hybrid steering wheel perfectly fulfils both roles was demonstrated emphatically by BMW works driver Philipp Eng at BMW SIM Live. He entered the stage in the real M4 GT3, emerged holding the steering wheel, inserted it into the simulator, and promptly completed a number of laps in the car’s virtual counterpart.

Extensive tests allow the BMW Motorsport engineers to constantly monitor the durability of the steering wheel in real racing situations. It will be available from Fanatec in the first half of 2021.

“The first time I heard of the idea to design the BMW M4 GT3 steering wheel to be compatible with a simulator, I was flabbergasted – because I was thrilled by the concept from the word go,” said Eng. “You have to take your hat off to the pioneering role that BMW Motorsport and Fanatec have taken on here, and to the courage to implement a project of this kind.”

“Compared to the steering wheel in the BMW M6 GT3, for example, the new wheel has extremely good ergonomics. It is very comfortable to hold. You can tell that real professionals have been at work in every area,” he added.

As with the M8 GTE and M4 GT4 before it, BMW Motorsport has worked very closely with popular sim racing platform iRacing over the past few months in order to integrate the BMW M4 GT3 as faithfully as possible in the simulation.

The difference this time is that the car is being used as a test car on iRacing even as it is being developed. As such, the sim racers can follow the development together with BMW Motorsport, and can help drive the development forward until the final version is available on iRacing and to real motor racing customers later in 2021.

At the same time as the real car is being developed, BMW Motorsport engineers have provided their colleagues at iRacing with CAD data and photos as a reference, which they can then use as a basis when programming and designing the virtual M4 GT3. In an additional data package, iRacing received all the information on the driving dynamics of the racing car. In total, over 70 GB of data has already been exchanged. The common goal: to recreate the actual driving dynamics as realistically as possible.

Philipp Eng was impressed by how successfully this had been achieved when he took the virtual M4 GT3 for a spin for the first time on the simulator at BMW SIM Live. “I find it extremely cool that the BMW M4 GT3 has been introduced on iRacing parallel to its actual development. After all, I am not only a thoroughbred racing driver, but also a thoroughbred sim racer,” said Eng, who, as an alpha tester for iRacing, plays a role in ensuring that the handling of the car is as close as possible to reality.

Sim racing is growing in popularity all over the world. As such, the number of users building comprehensively-equipped rigs at home is also growing. At BMW Motorsport, this raised the question of how to integrate these rigs in everyday life. Together with BMW Designworks and furniture manufacturer Sedus, they have come up with a solution. The concept study is called “Fusion SL” – a unique combination of sim racing rig and lounge furniture.

The idea was to develop a piece of furniture that would save space and could be aesthetically integrated into a modern living environment. It can be converted into a rig in just a few simple steps, but which is otherwise folded down to serve as a desk, coffee table or seat, thus making ‘boost’ and ‘ease’ concepts that can be experienced not only in the car, but also in the living room.

To implement the project, the engineering quality of BMW Motorsport, design expertise of Michael Scully and his BMW Designworks team, and the production performance of Sedus came together. “The Fusion SL concept combines the best of two worlds,” said Scully. “It is not necessarily intended to replace the high-end sim rigs used by professionals. Our goal was rather to make sim racing and the hardware required attractive for new target groups – and, to be honest, their fellow occupants.”

“It is not easy to strike the right balance between the necessary stability, portability, flat profile, torsional rigidity and a visual impression that will bring the piece of furniture out of the cellar and into the living room, as many of these aspects contradict each other. However, design is all about overcoming these challenges,” explained Ernst Holzapfel, Head of Marketing at Sedus Stoll AG.

The Fusion SL concept can be the perfect home office for sim racers. The Wooom chair is its perfect partner.
