While owners of new vehicles which are under warranty should (in fact, they are required to) visit authorised service centres of the brand of their vehicle while it is under warranty, there are those who may prefer to have independent workshops look after their vehicle in later years. They may feel that some of these workshops have more personalised services and may also have the perception that the charges are different.

In the old days, before the increased presence of electronic systems in cars, most workshops could service almost any car. The mechanical operation was essentially the same and what counted more was experience than the hardware used. Often, the older the mechanic, the better he seemed to be, probably because he had come across thousands of different problems and found solutions to them in his own way!

Today, however, cars are more complex with computerised systems and advanced engine technology. Diagnostic equipment is needed to properly service the car and a higher level of skill is needed. The days of the young apprentice ‘learning on the job’ and then going on to start his own workshop are gone because of the need for greater technical proficiency and investments in equipment too.

As mentioned earlier, the new badge for the Peugeot brand will make its first appearance on the new Peugeot 308, which now enters its third generation. Revealed today, the new hatchback continues to share its appearance with other recent models but has significant change under the skin.

It is a larger car than before, with a wheelbase that is 55 mm longer and the body over it extended a further 110 mm. The beneficiaries are the occupants, especially those in the rear, who have more space. The overall height has also been lowered by up to 20 mm in the interests of aerodynamic efficiency so from being rather bulbous before, it has a sleeker profile.

The second generation of the 308 which was launched in Malaysia in 2015.

Further evolution of i-Cockpit
In terms of technology, the new 308 has the latest-generation driving aids and a further evolution of the i-Cockpit with 3D technology. It also comes with i-Connect Advanced, an infotainment system that is said to be intuitive to use and always connected.

Depending on the market, there will be combustion engines – petrol as well as diesel – and also plug-in hybrid powertrains. This is another step towards Peugeot’s aim of offering an electrified variant across its entire model line-up by 2025. It will be interesting to see if we get the hybrid powertrain as a way for Berjaya Auto Alliance Sdn Bhd (BAASB), the new distributor, to discard the legacy of the previous engine. The combustion engines will be a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol unit (108 bhp or 128 bhp), and a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder diesel with 128 bhp.

Hot hatch variant with 300 bhp and AWD
Like many new models from the French Group, the new 308 sits on the EMP2 platform – shared with the Citroen C5 Aircross, Vauxhall Grandland and DS 7 Crossback. The hybrid variants are front-wheel drive but there will also be a PSE (Peugeot Sport Engineered) 4-wheel-drive hot hybrid hatch with around 300 bhp.

A late-life update for the outgoing 308 introduced elements of Peugeot’s current i-Cockpit interior layout but the latest generation gains an updated set-up that mirrors the predominantly digital and angular design of other Peugeot interiors.

A key development is the small steering wheel, which features sensors to detect the driver’s grip levels when using driving aids. This downsized, performance-inspired steering wheel houses certain controls for the infotainment system and driver aids. However, the centrally mounted 10-inch touchscreen – angled slightly towards the driver – replaces the majority of physical buttons and switches. A row of so-called ‘i-toggle’ switches below this screen can be individually configured to control separate functions, according to the driver’s preference.

Innovative ‘high-vent’ architecture places the air vents in the optimum position for efficiency and comfort. This layout also ensures that the standard 10-inch central touchscreen, located slightly lower than the digital cluster, is closer to the driver’s hand and eye line for easier and safer operation.

The air conditioning system also benefits from the addition of the AQS (Air Quality System) which constantly monitors the quality of the air entering the vehicle and is capable of activating air recycling on its own. Some variants of the new 308 feature Clean Cabin technology, an air treatment system that automatically filters out polluting gases and particles. The prevailing outside air quality is displayed on the central touchscreen.

The driver gets a new compact control for impulse selection of the modes (Reverse, Neutral, Drive) and two buttons (Parking and Manual) of the 8-speed automatic gearbox. There’s also a Driving Style Selector to choose different driving modes (Electric, Hybrid, Eco, Normal and Sport), depending on the powertrain and driver’s preference.

First model for BAASB?
It’s likely that BAASB will be starting off with this new model, given that it is the first with the new brand identity. Whether it will be assembled locally is the question; Peugeot already has an assembly plant in Gurun, Kedah, and the 308, being a high-volume model, would certainly be a good candidate for adding to the line. That would help to moderate the price and stay competitive.

The Honda City has been Honda Malaysia’s bestselling model for many years and certainly deserves to be one of the very exclusive ‘1 Million Dreams’ Special Edition models. Originally conceived as Honda’s ‘Asian Car’ to provide a new entry-level model when the Civic had risen aware from that position, the City had the right formula in both price and design to win more and more customers.

It was assembled in Malaysia right from the first generation in the closing years of the 1990s. The early generation was assembled in Johor at the Oriental Assemblers factory and then assembly was transferred to Melaka when the Honda Malaysia plant began operations in 2003.

Commenting on the success of the model, Honda Malaysia’s Managing Director & CEO, Toichi Ishiyama, said: “The City has proven to be an important model for Honda Malaysia, a favourite among many Malaysians for its spaciousness, practicality and safety features.”

Although the City was already being sold before 2001, Honda Malaysia records sales of the City from that year and according to the company’s data, cumulative sales have been 351,000 units. Of that number, the 4th Generation City launched in 2014 accounted for more than 205,000 units and kept the model in a leadership position in its segment.

The fifth generation was launched last October and as with previous generations, there was a long list of people waiting for it. Some 5,000 people put their money down to book a unit; although they knew what it looked like, they did not have a chance to try it first. But as with other Honda models, the brand has become so trusted that it was not a matter of waiting to hear if there were any negative experiences by new owners, as can be the case with some brands. Those who liked what they saw and read about were confident enough to pay the deposit to be among the first to own one.

For the ‘1 Million Dreams’ Special Edition, one unit of the latest City 1.5V variant has been given additional features. The features are identical for all the Special Edition models: on the exterior are a Dual-Tone finish (white bodywork with black roof), red highlight line running across the black grille, red highlight line on each door mirror, red highlights on wheels with a black finish and of course, ‘1 Million Dreams’ emblems on either side of the bodywork.

Inside the cabin which has been noted for its spaciousness, the leather upholstered front seats have an embossed ‘1 Million Dreams’ signature as well as a plaque on the dashboard. The steering wheel is also leather-wrapped and has sporty red stitching as well as a red mark at the 12 o’clock position. This little detail is usually found on sportscars or drivers put it so that there is a visual indicator to where the front wheels are pointing. Every owner of a Special Edition model will also receive an exclusive Honda Leather Pouch.

The City 1.5V uses a 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine with a DOHC and 16-valve cylinder head and a PGM-FI fuel delivery system. Output from this proven engine, the most powerful in its class, is 121 ps/145 Nm which goes through a CVT to the front wheels. While offering zippy performance, the engine also runs economically, with factory tests indicating that it will go almost 19 kms a litre. Drivers can stretch the litre further by using the ECON mode which prioritises fuel-saving.

Features from more expensive models

Though it is priced from RM86,561.45 (without insurance), the City has many features that are usually enjoyed by those who buy more expensive cars. For instance, the engine and air-conditioner can be started remotely and unlocking the doors is keyless along with starting/stopping the engine. The 1.5V variant also comes with cruise control and paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

With its strong G-FORCE CONTROL (G-CON) body structure, the latest City has been awarded the maximum of 5 stars from ASEAN NCAP. It comes with a comprehensive range of active and passive safety systems and features that will help the driver to avoid an accident and reduce injuries if the accident does occur. ISOFIX points are provided at the rear seat so owners can install compatible childseats which are now required by law.

Being aware of the surroundings is important for safe driving and besides a Multi-Angle Reverse Cameras, the new City 1.5V has Honda LaneWatch. This is an innovative camera-based system which provides the driver with a real-time view of the blind spot along the left side of the car. The advantage of this system is that the driver does not need to turn the head so much to see the traffic situation (unlike having to turn a lot to see the door mirror). The LaneWatch display automatically comes on whenever the signal indicator is activated.

The City was originally a compact hatchback Honda model in the 1980s which was only produced between 1981 and 1994 in two generations. The City which people know today was a new sedan launched in 1996. It was Honda’s ‘Asian Car’, developed to offer a more affordable Honda model to developing markets where the Civic’s price had moved it beyond being an ‘entry-level’ model. It’s not often that we get to know about military vehicles for obvious reasons. They are used by security forces who prefer their equipment and methods of operating to not be known to the public. However, occasionally, a manufacturer may publicise its vehicles which are available for military use but not necessarily in use by the armed forces. MILDEF International Technologies Sdn Bhd (MILDEF), originally known as Kembara Suci Sdn. Bhd. when it was founded in 2005, is one such company which is looking to supply the Malaysian armed forces with an armoured vehicle known as the 4×4 High Mobility Armoured Vehicle (HMAV).

After its public unveiling in February, the MILDEF has been undergoing evaluation at various training grounds throughout Malaysia. The exercise lasted 9 days, during which time the MILDEF HMAV 4×4 was subjected to 700 km of road testing and 300 kms off-road, as well as being put through the paces on a tough obstacle course. The HMAV was also subjected to tests such as highway endurance, fuel efficiency, loading, winching, slope-climbing, mounting and dismounting, climbing and braking, and of course crossing water that was 1 metre deep.

The evaluation was conducted by teams from the Malaysian Army and Defence Science and Technology Research Institute (STRIDE) with personnel from MILDEF present. According to Datuk Sri Mohd Nizam bin Kasa, Chief Executive Officer of MILDEF. the performance of the HMAV during this very important first round of testing was satisfactory. “We are now planning to conduct testing at several other locations,” he said.

Designed to withstand being hit by armour-piercing rounds and mines, the HMAV is built to STANAG 4569 Level 2 military standard established by NATO (the alliance of military organisations of European and North American countries). It weighs 13.2 tonnes and is powered by a 7200 cc Caterpillar Diesel engine which produces 330 bhp. This gives the HMAV a power to weight ratio of 24 bhp per tonne and it has been able to get up to a test speed of 110 km/h. Of course, military vehicles are not required to be super-fast (unless they are jet fighters) and other capabilities are more important.

What would you do with RM367,000? Some, if not most people could do quite a lot with all that money.

Some may invest the money in properties for future returns, some may pay off debts, some will help their families while others may start a business.

But let’s assume you have it all already. There is nothing else you could want and there’s lots of spare change in the bank. Lets then talk about spending your money on a Mercedes-Benz A35 AMG – a super hot hatch that costs an eye watering RM367,000, which undoubtedly is a lot of money for an A-Class.

Imagine for a second that the most basic A-Class costs just RM220,000. An A35 AMG costs a whopping RM147,000 more. And what you get are some go faster bits, a trick sports suspension and chassis, and a highly tuned engine that is the same as the one powering the A250.

That’s right, the engine that powers the A35 AMG is a modded version of the one that powers the A250, unlike the bespoke AMG engine that powers the A45S AMG.

But that’s not necessarily a bad thing because you get 306hp and 400Nm of torque. The A35 also sees off the 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.6 seconds. Which is very fast for a hot hatch.

You could also argue that the A35 AMG is an entirely different breed of car than the A200, and you won’t be wrong. But the question here is, is it worth the money? Or shouldn’t you bother and jump right into the full-blown A45S AMG instead?

So why did Mercedes build it then?

The A35 AMG is designed to bridge the gap between the A250 and the A45 AMG. The price gap between the two stands at about RM112,000, and that’s where Mercedes-Benz thought that the A35 AMG could be placed – in between the A250 and the A45. An ideal middle-ground for people who think that the A250 is too slow and the A45 too expensive.

And they weren’t wrong because it just makes perfect sense – price wise at least.

Other than sheer driving fun and bullying Volkswagens and Honda Type-R’s on the road, an A-Class that costs as much as a new condominium simply does not make sense, to regular wage-earning people at least.

But the A35 AMG is not meant for regular people, it is meant for those with deep pockets who like to drive hard and don’t mind suspension so stiff that it makes your nose feel like its about to fall off your face.

Simply put, it is meant for those who like their cars to have a naughty edge with no regard for comfort whatsoever.

What’s it like to be inside the A35 AMG and can you drive it like a proper civilised citizen?

If it were not for the seats, the steering wheel, the aluminium pedal shifters, and the awkward AMG strips around the left of the dash, it would feel like a typical A-Class inside.

But because everything mentioned above exists inside the A35 AMG, it makes the interior feel more purposeful when you first take a seat. Especially the seats that not only look great but also feel great as well. But because they are so thinly padded, they would be quite uncomfortable over long distances.

And unlike the first generation AMG seats where all controls were placed on the side of the seats, you actually have to delve quite deep into the electronic menu to adjust things like side bolstering and lumbar support. We found those settings once when we first picked up the car, but could not find it again as the menu was just too complicated, so we didn’t bother. Perhaps we should have spent a bit more time fiddling around the menu than driving the car.

Other than that though, driving the A35 AMG is as fun an occasion as driving a hot hatch gets.

But because of its racer-boy like suspension character, it results in an uncomfortable sitting position. Even in Comfort mode. Roll over a hump and you will notice it immediately. It does not bother soaking it up, instead simply transfers it to the passenger cabin and tells you to deal with it.

You feel every imperfection in the road, every dip and every bump that comes your way.

Not only do you feel everything in the cabin, but also in your bum as the seats make no effort to absorb anything either.

The steering wheel has a heavy feel to it like a proper sports car should and ensures your palms tell your brain everything that is happening at ground zero because the steering wheel is a chatty one – telling you exactly what is happening with the tyres and the road.

But as soon as you select Sport or Sport Plus mode, the car takes on a very different, livewire-ish character, like it has suddenly guzzled down about half a dozen cans of Red Bull and wants to take on a fight with every single car on the road. It also somehow wrings out the horns from the temples of your head, and makes you do things on the road you would otherwise never imagine.

This is the true nature of the A35 AMG, the sports mode – where everything about the car is at its finest.

But there is a docile side to the car too, this does not mean that it can also turn into a pot-hole absorbing S-Class, but it can actually be a quiet sanctuary after a long hard days of work. Though that may not happen a lot.

So can you drive it like a proper civilised citizen? Sure. Till you see the next fast corner, which makes you want to take it on pedal to the metal.

Enough with the whining about comfort and suspension, how’s it like to drive hard?

It may be uncomfortable, cramped (though roomier than the previous A-Class), noisy because there’s a lot of road noise intruding into the cabin noise rather than the sweet sound of a turbocharged four-pot.

But as far as a hot-hatch goes, the A35 is simply brilliant.

It is terribly stiff (read: uncomfortable) when going around your daily business because of how the suspension and chassis has been set up and all the stiff mountings rather than rubber bushings. But find a good stretch of winding road and floor it and the A35 AMG is immediately in its element.

The handling is pin point accurate, the steering rack too is direct mounted to the body, so that means there is no delay during change of direction. The car turns immediately when you tell it to. Even the slightest steering input is picked up by the body and the wheels. But the A35 seems to love being abused, it is as if being abused is what it was born to do.

There are five different drive settings for you to work with – Slippery, Individual, Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus – and each mode adjusts the character of the car according to what its name suggests.

Start up the car and there is little audible hint of what lays under the bonnet.

Floor the pedal and you have to wait about half a second or so for the car to figure out what you are asking of it.

But after that, it lays down power to all four-wheels while gently pushing you back into the seats. Power delivery is not explosive like that of the A45, this is after all the lesser sibling of the Mercedes 45 range, but it is still an onslaught to the senses.

The steering wheel lightens just a tad bit during acceleration before finding its heft again, this is possibly from the car squatting during launch. But after that, it lays down the gauntlet corner after corner.

Grip is immense and it never seems to run out of it. The Pirelli tyres play a huge role of course, but it is the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system that is the real star of the Grip Show here.

The system features an electromechanical multiple-disc clutch that manages grip between all-four tyres, sending grip to front or rear axle even before you know it. That is where the difference lays between the all-wheel-drive systems of the A35 and the A45S.

Called the AMG Performance 4MATIC in the A35 and AMG Performance 4MATIC PLUS in the A45S, the former is able to send power to the front or rear wheels of the car, while the latter is able to send power to each individual wheel that needs grip the most. And that makes a world of difference in corners.

But even so, the A35 feels very quick around corners, and always feels more confident in a corner than you are.

Should you buy it if you had the money?

Silly question by the editor. Of course you would buy it if you had the money. What else would you buy? A Golf R? Come on, that is so 2010. And hasn’t that been rendered irrelevant ever since the first A45 showed up back in 2013? A Civic Type-R? Brilliantly engaging car and undoubtedly fun to drive, but the A35 AMG will be two car lengths ahead in two flicks of the right shifter pedal.

If money is no object then you should buy it. Just don’t expect it to be very comfortable or perfect for that matter.

My kid’s stroller could fit in the booth and not much else, so practicality is out of the window as well.

But who cares about that when you have 306hp under your right foot, sport suspension and one of the most advanced all-wheel-drive systems, ever.

Just as Toyota established Calty in California in 1973 as an advanced design studio to develop new models, mainly for the US market, it also set up a design studio in Europe to develop products more tailored for that region.

Located in the south of France, the facility known as ED2 has been in operation since 2000 and is now Toyota’s European Design Headquarters. ED2 was responsible for carrying out design studies, especially of A-segment models, and was a major contributor to the original Yaris project. It was also responsible for the original concept for the C-HR crossover SUV.

Preview of the next Aygo?
Now ED2 is also bringing the same visual boldness to small cars with the Aygo X prologue, a concept model which is likely to be a preview of the next generation of the Aygo that was introduced in 2005. The Aygo was jointly developed by Toyota, Peugeot and Citroen (which have their own versions) and is also built as a factory in the Czech Republic which is jointly owned by the three companies.

Moreover, use of bi-tone was an additional invitation to take colour balances to another level with the inclusion of a fine sprinkling of blue metallic flake into the paint mix. The resulting dazzling effect makes the colour fully deserving of its name of Sparkling Chilli Red.

Working differently but together
The challenging project of creating the Aygo X prologue under present conditions has been a great test of the agile process of fast and fluid design development at ED2. Whether together or remotely, ED² design team members worked seamlessly from hand-sketching to digital sketch-modelling, to virtual reality simulations, to 3D ‘speedshapes’, right to the final car itself.

Although Toyota does not officially state that the Aygo x prologue will become the next generation of the Aygo, it looks pretty much like a production-ready design and will certainly be on a version of the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform that is now used for all new models.

First generation of the Aygo was introduced in Europe in 2005. (above). It is currently in its second generation (below) which was launched in 2014.

The third model which is part of the very exclusive money-cannot-buy ‘1 Million Dreams’ Special Edition range is the Honda CR-V. This SUV is the third oldest model line in Honda Malaysian’s current line-up, so it would have contributed significantly to the sales volume of Honda in Malaysia. It’s been around since the first generation which came out in the mid-1990s and, along with Toyota’s RAV4, established a new market segment.

The CR-V was initially imported in CBU (completely built-up) form and sold quite well as it offered passenger car-like comfort and driving character with the functional image of a SUV. The early generations even came with a picnic table cleverly stowed in the floor of the boot.

When production began at Honda Malaysia’s plant in Melaka in 2003, the first model to be assembled was the CR-V, which was then in its second generation. To commemorate the model’s special place in the plant’s history, a Melaka Edition was created for sale to the public in limited numbers.

Now, for the ‘1 Million Dreams’ campaign to celebrate sales of 1 million vehicles since Honda Malaysia was established, a special version of the CR-V will be given away. Earth Dreams engine
The CR-V Special Edition is powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder VTEC engine with a CVT. Though it seems small, with Honda Earth Dreams Technology and turbocharging, the engine can produce up to 193 ps, with the maximum of 243 Nm of torque available from 2,000 rpm to as high as 5,000 rpm. That sort of output is even greater than bigger engines and the advantage, besides saving weight, is that fuel consumption can be up to 14.3 kms per litre. With a full fuel tank of 57 litres, that can mean a range of at least 800 kms.

Many people buy a SUV for its high seating position which gives a commanding view, and the ground clearance of 208 mm will give more confidence when going over uneven or even flooded roads.

The version chosen for the Special Edition is the top version and as such, it comes with many premium features as well as lots of convenience features. You can even start the engine and air-conditioner from a distance to cool down the interior on a hot day. And while the level of sound insulation is quite generous to prevent external noises from entering, there is also an Active Noise Control system to cancel out noises at irritating frequencies.

First with Honda SENSING
Besides being the first model to be assembled at Honda Malaysia’s plant, the CR-V is also the first model with Honda SENSING. This suite of driver assistance systems was introduced together with the 5th generation of the model in 2017. Honda SENSING has eight active systems, most of which use a camera and work with each other, to help the driver avoid accidents. The system also has Autonomous Emergency Braking which means that if a collision is likely to occur (as detected by the sensors) but the driver does not take the right action to prevent it, the brakes will come on automatically. Even if it cannot prevent contact (due to the road being slippery), the earlier braking action will reduce the speed and could result in less severe damage, reducing repair costs.

The CR-V was the first model to introduce Honda SENSING in Malaysia when the current generation was launched in 2017.

There’s also Honda LaneWatch, an innovative blindspot monitoring system that uses a camera instead of sensors on the body. The camera captures a real-time image of the area along the left side of the car and shows it on the display screen on the dashboard. Active only when the left signal is on, the display allows the driver to spot other vehicles coming up and close. As the display screen is positioned in the middle, the driver also does not have to turn the head so much, which would be the case if having to look at the left door mirror.

You won’t be able to buy the CR-V ‘1 Million Dreams’ Special Edition but if you want to own a CR-V, there are three variants, two of which have the Earth Dreams turbocharged engine. Pricing ranges from RM140,000 to about RM163,000 (without insurance).

The story behind TOYOTA GAZOO Racing and why it was created

BMW’s iDrive interface has been around for some 20 years now and with each version, users – primarily the driver although it is also designed for passenger use – have gained better interaction and ‘intelligence’ with the system. Soon iDrive8 will make its debut in the new iX and i4 models with a new generation of displays, controls, software, and extremely powerful connectivity and data processing.

The new iDrive 8 can constantly process large amounts of not only self-generated data but also data collected from the BMW Group vehicle fleet to implement the driver’s wishes in a context-related way. Paving the way for greater personalization is BMW ID, a system which recognizes repetitive situations, learns from them and provides suggestions on how functions can be activated accordingly. Remote Software Upgrade allows the new iDrive to benefit from regular over-the-air improvements, integrate additional functions and stay up to date – without the owner having to bring the car to the service centre.

The integration of third-party apps is more comprehensive than ever too. Simplifying management of systems
BMW’s iDrive appeared in 2001 with the 7-Series of that model year. It ushered in a new era of in-car operating technology with the aim of getting a grip on the constantly expanding array of functions. As more and more electronic systems could be incorporated for safety, comfort or convenience, it was important that the driver manage them easily and intuitively.

BMW’s paradigm shift with the iDrive minimized the buttons and controls throughout the cockpit and in their place was a colour screen in the centre of the instrument panel (the control display) and a rotary dial on the centre console (the iDrive Controller). This multifunctional system allowed drivers to control a large number of vehicle settings, entertainment, navigation and telecommunications functions with a single operating tool. Within the space of a few years, iDrive effectively became the new industry standard and proved to be extremely future proof.

20 years later, the developers and designers focusing on user interaction and on the user experience have faced a new set of challenges – a constant stream of new functions is joining the fray, functions are gaining in complexity all the time, and operating them needs to become easier and more natural.

The BMW cars of today are intelligent and able to build a detailed picture of their surroundings and make sense of it using modern sensors and data processing. They are permanently connected to the BMW Cloud and therefore benefit from the combined computing power, long-term and real-time data, machine learning, and swarm intelligence generated by the 14 million connected BMW vehicles out on the roads.

The developers of the new iDrive have carried over the car’s expanded technical abilities into an all-embracing user experience distinguished by its intelligent symbiosis of hardware and software. Looking ahead, the car will become an increasingly smart and automated device which maintains a natural dialogue with the user. This interaction will involve the user simply making iDrive aware of their wishes and requests, while the system learns how its user behaves, comes up with suggestions in real time (based on an extensive pool of detailed knowledge) and actively proposes them to the driver – who then only needs to confirm.

What began with the introduction of a rotary dial and a digital display is now an all-encompassing, intelligent, multi-sensory experience tailored to the user. It brings about another paradigm shift – this time to a natural dialogue between the user and their vehicle: more intuitive, personal, but also engaging.

The first BMW vehicle to receive the new iDrive 8 system will be the iX all-electric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). In order to provide an improved interactive experience with this more technologically sophisticated and complex product, voice control and touch functions of the BMW Curved Display are prioritized. The number of buttons and switches has been reduced by almost half compared to current vehicles. At the same time, control clusters for relevant and frequently used basic functions are retained where customers expect to find them.

The control panels on the center console and instrument panel have an all-new minimalist design. The familiar iDrive Controller is the central control element. The Touch Controller is designed in an extremely smart glass-effect finish while the colour and materials used for the centre console give it a very sophisticated appearance.

The Controller is enclosed by a panel with a High-gloss Black frame, a glass-effect surface and white backlit buttons. On the centre console, the control surface with active haptic inputs subdivided by feeler bars is used to select the iDrive menus, My Modes and other functions. The Controller, the rocker switch for gear selection, the audio roller control and the seat adjustment buttons can also be specified in an optional polished crystal finish.

The new generation of iDrive brings with it a new design language with eye-catching graphics, modern colors, futuristic textures and forms and expanded use of light to create an immersive visual experience. At the same time, the user interface has been optimized to present just the right amount of information in an easy-to-understand way.

The extensive individualization options available for the screens in the instrument display can be accessed quickly via the function keys on the steering wheel. The two-axis operating system enables user-friendly vertical list navigation of on-screen content with the rotating key, as well as toggling between menus by tilting the key horizontally.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant
The new generation of iDrive also brings additional abilities for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. For a more personal interaction, users can still give the system a name of their choice, which they then use as a prompt. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant has an important role to play in creating a natural dialogue between the user and their vehicle. The personal assistant is the central interaction interface with the user – the ‘face’ of the in-car intelligence.

To also enable non-verbal communication with the vehicle occupants in the future, the user experience designers gave the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant a visual form that also allows it to display gestures. This was based on studies with test persons who were asked to answer selected questions non-verbally. Their movements were recorded, and patterns were established in how certain moods and activities were expressed. These patterns were carried over to the new geometry of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant’s visual image with the help of insights from art, as used in the making of animated films.

The personal assistant follows the shy tech principle of design in terms of how and where it is visible. When it is spoken to, it appears in a fluid animation on the relevant screen (information or center control) area and spreads out over the displays. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant can distinguish who is talking to it. If the driver is actively engaged, the Intelligent Personal Assistant’s visual image appears in the right-hand area of the information display or in the BMW Head-Up Display and signals its readiness to accept spoken instructions. If prompted by the front passenger, the assistant’s image appears in the right-hand area of the BMW Curved Display

When interacting with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and using the new iDrive 8, drivers benefit from increased personalization of the user experience based on the BMW ID. Current BMW ConnectedDrive customers are able to use their existing credentials to access their BMW ID. In future, it will be possible to securely store more personalized settings in the BMW ID and transfer them between vehicles. Once the BMW ID has been loaded, the driver will receive a personal greeting which will include the customized profile image that can be uploaded in the My BMW App.

Technology and connectivity
The iDrive 8 is the most powerful and encompassing technology ever created by BMW. In recent years, there has been a huge increase in the software scopes for the iDrive system. Today, BMW’s iDrive handles a wide array of tasks that extend far beyond a conventional display and operating concept. These range from integrating telematics and connected services to data processing and preparation, connecting to devices and deep integration of third-party apps or projected modes, as well as seamless integration of cloud-based services like BMW Maps.

The BMW Group has been developing the central control unit and software integration platform in-house, entirely on Linux since 2013. Having complete control over software is crucial for creating a stable, upgradeable, high-quality system that distinguishes the brand. In the past, the BMW display and iDrive system has been overhauled on average every 3 years, a cycle that is roughly half as long as the complete product development cycle for a vehicle.

In the era of fast-paced digital development, it is no longer enough to completely update a model’s digital features every three years, and this resulted in a fundamental change of approach in 2018. The arrival of Remote Software Upgrade means owners have been able to keep their vehicle up to date with the latest software at all times. New functions can be imported quickly and easily over the air, either using the car’s built-in SIM card or via the My BMW App. Remote Software Upgrade has a crucial role to play in the new iDrive 8 by offering the possibility of performing extremely complex and large software updates in areas such as driving assistance and partial automation.

5G mobile technology
The iX will be the first premium model available worldwide that is compatible with 5G mobile technology. 5G offers extremely high data bandwidth and low latency – meaning fast data transmission – and also expands the possibilities for connectivity between the vehicle and its environment. It forms the basis for real-time reception and transmission of large volumes of data and sensor system information to the BMW Cloud. Together with the quality of service offered by the 5G network, this will bring about significant enhancements and innovations in the areas of entertainment, infotainment, automated driving and road safety. The iDrive 8 has been prepared for making optimum use of the data speeds offered by 5G.
