Revised Toyota Yaris to be available soon

The Toyota Yaris gets its first update with revisions in cosmetics as well as the addition of safety features. Already a leader in the non-national hatchback segment, UMW Toyota Motor expects the updated Yaris to maintain its position.

Cosmetic changes can be seen in the new front grille. The bumper has also been restyled, gaining a more aerodynamic form with an aerokit accessory, with the DRLs repositioned. The headlights have also been restyled to be more eye-catching and have a follow-me-home function.

The follow-me-home function is useful at night as the lights remain on to provide illumination ahead. They switch off automatically after a while, ensuring that the battery is not drained.

Toyota Safety Sense
In the safety department, the provisions for the Yaris are representative of Toyota’s attention to giving occupants the best possible protection. Like the bigger models, the Yaris now comes with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) . This suite of safety systems comes with a Pre-Collision System (PCS) and Lane Departure Alert (LDA). Both systems use camera and radar sensors to monitor the road ahead.

PCS assists the driver in avoiding an accident by alerting and then taking braking action automatically if a collision is likely to occur. Even if a collision is unavoidable, the speed reduction can help reduce injuries as well as vehicle damage. It is active from a speed of 15 km/h so it is effective in urban conditions.

LDA, which operates from 50 km/h, will be helpful if the driver is drowsy and does not keep the car in its lane, and it starts to deviate dangerously into another lane. There will be a visual alert in the Multi-Info Display and also a beeping sound to alert the driver.

The Yaris also comes with a 3D 360-degree panoramic view monitor giving the driver an all-round view that is displayed on the dashboard panel. The images are created from four tiny cameras and cover the front, rear and sides. It is very useful to spot any hazards, obstacles or even small children nearby.

TSS complements safety systems that include Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Hill-Start Assist Control, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), ABS, with EBD and Brake Assist, and Front as well as a Rear Digital Video Recorder.

For connectivity, the Yaris has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to link compatible smartphones to the infotainment system. This means favourite apps can be accessed via the 7-inch touchscreen on the dashboard.

Vehicle Telematics System (VTS) is now made as a standard feature for Yaris (G&E variants). VTS provides real-time tracking of the car which means that if it is stolen, the Control Centre for the telematics service will be able to locate it and inform the authorities. This will enable its recovery more quickly.

Bookings accepted from today
Assembled locally, the Yaris is available in various colour choices, with Platinum White Pearl being a new colour. UMWT has a lot of experience with pearl finishes, having been the first company to introduce it when it was available with the Corolla models in the late 1980s.

The updated Yaris will be launched soon but confirmed prices have not been revealed (although estimated prices on the website start from RM71,688) . Nevertheless, they will be exempted from 10% sales tax until the end of this year. Bookings are accepted now at all authorized Toyota showrooms nationwide, or can also be made online.

EON changes its corporate logo, takes over 9 Proton Edar dealerships

A number of companies, even global ones, have changed their corporate logo over the past year and Edaran Otomobil Nasional, a subsidiary of DRB-HICOM Berhad, joins them this month.

The new logo is the third one for the company, better known as ‘EON’, since it was established in 1984. The first change after that was in 1990. The new logo is a total departure from EON’s previous logo. It sports a stylised red ‘E’ that sits within a blue diamond, showing a forward-movement motion.

‘Coming of age’
The company’s acronym ‘EON’ also appears on a more modern font. The company says this signifies the brand’s coming of age after more than 30 years in the automotive distribution business in Malaysia.

The red ‘E’ is said to depict the boldness of the brand that retails a number of automotive brands in Malaysia. The blue diamond is a show of strength for the 36-year-old brand, as well as the typical traits that are associated with the colour blue: loyalty and wisdom.

EON was originally established to handle domestic distribution and marketing of Proton cars. When the role was taken over by Proton Edar, which was a subsidiary of Proton, EON became a super dealer chain as it had the most Proton outlets in the country.

With the change in its role, EON took on other brands to represent, namely Audi, Volkswagen and Mitsubishi. The other brands are sold by subsidiaries of EON. Additionally, the company also operates the Avis car rental and leasing network in Malaysia.

9 Proton outlets
Along with the new logo, EON has announced the commencement of their Proton retailing business. EON now owns nine Proton dealerships, including four 4S (sales, service, spares and spray-painting) centres and three 3S outlets. Four branches are in the central region, while there are two each are in Johor and Penang. The outlets were formerly owned by Proton Edar.

Nissan Almera Turbo officially launched, confirmed prices start from RM79,906

One of the things that has changed about how cars are being launched into the market nowadays is that the period of ‘teasing’ and ‘previewing’ can be quite long. It can be many months from the time the first official pictures are taken and first details released, until the time the car is actually ‘launched’ and deliveries start. In the past, delays were usually due to price approvals being slow and while the cars were already in the stockyards, customs duties could not be paid as the price was not approved by the government (only for locally-assembled models).

Nowadays, companies stretch the ‘preview’ over months to get maximum publicity. In some cases, due to competition, it is necessary to reveal details and the estimated price so as to make some customers who are considering another model pause and hopefully wait. The manufacturers themselves do it too – unveiling a new model at the beginning of the year and then starting production at the end for deliveries the following year!

Anyway, you would have read about the new Nissan Almera Turbo over the past few months and we even wrote about it in some detail, as well as provided some initial driving impressions. Today, the model is officially launched with confirmed prices.

There are three variants – VL, VLP and VLT – with prices shown on the chart below.

3-cylinder turbo engine
Only one engine is available, this being the HR10DET that is a compact powerplant with a 1-litre displacement and 3 cylinders. It’s another example of downsizing that has taken place over the past decade. With advanced technology as well as turbocharging, it can generate up to 100 ps/152 Nm – comparable to a 1.5-litre engine. It’s a bold move by ETCM to introduce this small engine in what is its mainstream model. Malaysians still see a need for at least 1.3 litres or more to have ‘enough performance’ and are not convinced that today’s smaller engines are actually much more powerful than the old 1-litre units that usually had a carburettor only.

The engineers have made the engines smaller to save weight and reduce fuel consumption, while boosting performance at the same time. And for Malaysian motorists, a smaller engine size also means paying lower roadtax each year.

The standard equipment and features are fairly generous, even with the lowest-priced Almera Turbo VL variant. F1 (Round 13): Preview & Starting Grid For 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix

Race starts at 1:10 pm in Italy | 8:10 pm in Malaysia

Round 13 of the 2020 Formula World Championship is another new event – the Formula 1 Emirates Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. It is the third race on Italian soil this year, after races at Monza and Mugello.

This weekend, it is held at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, more popularly referred to as the Imola Circuit as it is near the city of Imola. The last time the circuit had a F1 race was 14 years, when the 2006 San Marino Grand Prix was run.

The circuit had its name associated with the famous Italian carmaker in 1970 to honour Ferrari and mark the importance of the links with the circuit. It was initially after Enzo Ferrari’s son Dino; when Enzo himself passed away in 1988, the decision was taken to add the father’s name to that of his son.

*The last time a F1 race was held at Imola was the 2006 San Marino GP.*

A 2-day weekend format is being tried out for the first time, an approach which could allow additional races to be added to the calendar without spending too many days travelling far from home.

The shortened schedule means less track time – and only one driver has actually done a F1 race at Imola. He is Kimi Raikkonen, who raced at the circuit 5 times in total. For the rest, there’s only one 90-minute session in the morning available to get to know the layout before qualifying in the afternoon.

There are no lap times to aim for, partly because Formula 1 has not been here for several years and even for Raikkonen, the layout has been changed somewhat from what he knew.

Until very recently, it had been hoped that spectators would be allowed to attend in limited numbers, but the worsening of the COVID-19 situation in Italy forced a new decision to be made this week to hold the race without spectators. Furthermore, the race must start right after lunchtime to ensure there is sufficient daylight in the 4-hour window available.

The Imola circuit is a highly technical one, with a wide range of corners. The 67-year old circuit (which has changed over the years) is narrow and bumpy, as the older tracks tend to be. This is quite a change from what the drivers experienced in Portugal just recently.

“With very little time available to analyse the data from free practice, we have reorganised our priorities, allocating resources in a different way both at the track and back in Maranello. We will also manage components, engines and gearboxes for example or the incorporation of components that have already been tested, so as to cut down time spent and to try and reduce the risks as much as possible,” said Matteo Togninalli, Scuderia Ferrari’s Chief Race Engineer.

“The fact that the track has not had a F1 race in 14 years is indeed an additional and significant variable. It means that preparation prior to the event is even more important to try and perform as well as possible. Without any data to work from, as is the case with Imola, the level of fine tuning is reduced and one has to look at the bigger picture,” he explained.

He added that the simulator helps the driver to quickly familiarise himself with the track, not just its layout, but also other features that can impact performance, such as bumpy sections, where to ride the kerbs, the right lines and braking points. “It’s true the drivers learn a new track incredibly quickly and are soon on the limit, but it’s also true that when you go to a new track, the lap times tumble much more quickly than usual. It’s important therefore to do as many laps as possible to get to the optimum level as soon as possible,” Togninalli said.

Fuel pump recall list for Toyota and Lexus vehicles in Malaysia expanded

Following a recall notice announced in March, UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) has expanded the list of affected Toyota and Lexus vehicles that require a fuel pump replacement. The expansion has been prompted by additional information received from Toyota Motor Corporation which has identified 9,500 new units of Toyota models and 850 new units of Lexus models. These were units officially distributed by UMWT between July 2017 and July 2019.

Models affected
The Toyota models affected are the Alphard, Vellfire, Camry, Corolla, Fortuner, Innova, C-HR and Harrier. Lexus models affected are the ES250, GS200t, GS350, IS200t, LC500, LS500, LX570, NX300, RX300 and RX350. Models not mentioned are not affected, UMWT stresses.

The issue with the defective fuel pump is a serious one as it may stop operating. If this were to occur, warning lights and messages may be displayed on the instrument panel, and engine power or hesitation may occur. Therefore it is very important that owners respond to this recall announcement and visit an authorised Toyota or Lexus service centre for the replacement.

UMWT says it will officially notify affected vehicle owners to request them bring their vehicles in for the replacement of the fuel pump unit. There will be no charges for the parts and labour involved in this Special Service Campaign.

It is possible that some owners might not receive such a notification if they are not the original owner and their contact details are not registered with UMWT. If you own one of the vehicles listed (and distributed through the authorised Toyota and Lexus network) but do not receive any notification from UMWT, you can contact any authorised Toyota Service Centre or call the Toyota Freephone at 1800-8-TOYOTA (869682) for assistance. Naza Kia Red Cube showroom in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, has shut down

The Kia Red Cube outlet along the Federal Highway in Petaling Jaya, Selangor is no longer operating, according to a news report by our friends over at DSF. They have also learnt that it is to be taken over by a brand from China soon.

Before Naza Kia took over the building, it was a Toyota showroom and it was the second purpose-built car showroom built in Malaysia. The first company to occupy it when it opened in 1978 was Borneo Motors, then the distributor for Toyota vehicles. It was one of the very first 3S centres as it had a showroom, a small service centre which also sold spare parts and even a used car section.

The building, with its sloping façade, cost RM3 million to construct and became a landmark along the Federal Highway. It was the first of a few car companies to open outlets in the area. The building was then passed over the Sejati Motor (UMW Toyota Motor today) in 1982 when the company took over the Toyota distributorship for Malaysia.

UMW Toyota Motor used it as its head office as well as showroom for many years until 2005 when it built a new complex in Shah Alam, its present location. With the departure of the head office, the showroom was also closed down and was vacant for a while until Naza Kia took over in 2011.

Naza Kia spent some RM5 million to renovate the building to follow the Korean carmaker’s Red Cube concept. The facility in Malaysia was the second country after South Korea to adopt the concept which has since been used for Kia outlets in many other countries.

The closure of the flagship showroom comes at a time when there are rumours of the Kia franchise changing hands, notwithstanding the fact that Naza Kia is also promoting the new Kia Seltos SUV to be launched soon.

All-new Hyundai Sonata and Kona launched in Malaysia

Being a righthand drive market has sometimes been a challenge for distributors as their principal may choose to focus on the lefthand drive market which offers a bigger volume globally. The additional cost of engineering a righthand drive variant may not be justified by the potential volumes so some models may not be available.

Hyundai Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) has had that sort of problem on and off over the years, leading to some periods when there were no really new products to display in the showrooms. With the global products, of course, righthand drive models are a must and the time has come for not one but two new models to be launched in Malaysia.

The first is the Sonata which was the first Hyundai model to be sold in Malaysia way back in the early 1990s. Every generation since then has been sold and it has even been assembled locally and the eighth generation has its official launch today.

The second model is the Kona. This is Hyundai’s representative in the compact SUV segment and is a younger product which was born in 2017. It’s been doing pretty well and riding the wave of popularity for small SUVs these days.

NEW HYUNDAI SONATA
The eighth generation of the executive sedan has undergone a transformation in appearance, taking on a sleeker form that could be mistaken for a 4-door coupe. Inspired by the dramatic Le Fil Rouge concept shown at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, the new Sonata gains a sportier image than its predecessor.

The new design features the Digital Pulse Cascading Grille that spans from the front of the new Sonata, finishing at the innermost points of new combination headlamps coupled with a distinctive and innovative new lighting architecture.

Also a first for a Hyundai vehicle, the Hidden Lighting Lamps are a design innovation that incorporates state-of-the-art lighting technology, forming the Sonata’s light architecture. The Hidden Lighting Lamps appear to be chrome when switched off and become dramatically lit when turned on. It’s a design feature that you will see in other coming models as well.

The Sonata sits on a platform with a new Smartstream G2.5 powertrain. The 2.5-litre engine produces 180 ps/232 Nm which is transferred to the front wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission with shift-by-wire linkage.

The platform is a totally new one and the Sonata is the first model to utilize it. The engineers have significant flexibility for vehicle development across multiple segments with this platform which is made with hot-stamping and super-high-tensile steel. It has also been strengthened and with the aid of computer-aided engineering, dissipation of impact forces is carefully planned to minimize the effects on the occupants.

Inside the new Sonata
Spanning the full width of the cabin, the slim dashboard features a wide 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. This is customizable to suit different driving modes and preferences. At the centre of the dashboard, a large, 8-inch HD screen enables occupants to interact easily with the audio-video and navigation functions. This screen can also accommodate a split-screen function that allows audio and navigation to be displayed simultaneously.

The instrument panel is in the shape of spread wings, inspired by a stealth aircraft. This shape presents a levitating effect, and this philosophy carries into the long armrests. The designers compressed the height of the dashboard and air vents as much as possible to create a ‘lightweight ambience’.

HSDM has been well known for packing a lot of features into its models, making them good value for money. With the new Sonata, there are segment-first features too, and one of them is the video-based blind spot monitor that is displayed on the instrument panel. With most other companies, blind spot monitors usually just provide an alert to the driver who must look at the door mirrors. The Sonata’s system gives a live feed so the driver does not have to turn the head at all.

The top version also includes a Head-Up Display (HUD) ahead of the driver. This is a low-cost HUD which provides useful information when driving and it is right in the forward view of vision so the driver can keep eyes on the road ahead.

Other features in the comfort and convenience areas include a sunroof, electric parking brake, smart trunk, wireless smartphone charging pad with cooling fan, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a high-quality infotainment system.

The new Sonata is available in only one variant, priced from RM206,888, but the first 50 buyers can get it a special introductory price from RM189,888 (Peninsular Malaysia, excluding insurance). There are 6 exterior colour choices with three interior colour themes.

NEW HYUNDAI KONA
Those who like the well known coffee from the Hawaiian Islands will be happy to know there is now a SUV from Hyundai named after it. The compact model is a new line and is the first B-segment SUV sold by HSDM.

It’s a stylish design with an athletic image that incorporates Hyundai’s new ‘face’. This is the Cascading Grille with a sporty mesh pattern, flanked by flared, wing-like fenders that house composite headlamps with high-efficiency LEDs.

To appeal to younger buyers, the colour choices are more extroverted – Chalk White, Lake Silver, Phantom Black, Pulse Red and Ceramic Blue. The 1.6 Turbo variant gets a black roof, providing high contrast between the body, roof and wheels for a more distinctive appearance.

The Kona rides on an all-new platform developed for compact SUVs. On this platform is a lightweight unibody structure, 52% of which is Advanced High Strength Steel. Proprietary hot-stamping methods produce lightweight, ultra-strong structural elements to maximize the cabin’s central safety cell.

The platform also features an innovative multi-load path structure, effectively dispersing impact energy across multiple structures to protect passengers in the event of an accident. As such, injuries can be minimised, along with the cushioning effects of airbags.

HSDM offers the Kona with a choice of two powertrains – a 2.0-litre Nu MPI engine and a Gamma 1.6-litre 4-cylinder direct-injected, turbocharged engine. While the bigger engine generates 149 ps/180 Nm, the smaller one with turbocharging can produce up to 177 ps, with a maximum of 265 Nm of torque starting from 1500 rpm and available till 4500 rpm. The engine is coupled to a 7-speed EcoShift dual- clutch transmission (DCT).

Inside the Kona
Although the exterior appearance is that of a compact vehicle, the interior has been packaged intelligently to maximise space for passenger comfort. Stylistically, there is a strong horizontal character line creating a wide and spacious feel.

As with the exterior colour choices, the interior has also been given a youthful touch with contrasting coloured seatbelts and interior trims. Grey-coloured interior trim and black seatbelts are matched with the Lake Silver, Phantom Black, Blue Lagoon and Ceramic Blue exteriors; Red seatbelts and Red interior trims are paired with the Phantom Black and Pulse Red exteriors; and Lime seatbelts and Lime interior trims are paired with Chalk White.

The functional dashboard houses an advanced infotainment which displays information on a floating 7-inch touchscreen. Connectivity is possible with standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay so apps on smartphones can be mirrored on the dashboard. Incidentally, for those with compatible smartphones, there is also a wireless charging pad provided.

The more expensive variant has a Head-Up Display (HUD) system as well, projecting information onto the transparent panel ahead of the steering wheel. The 8-inch projected-image is visible in all lighting conditions and provides driving as well as safety information. When not in use, the HUD panel retracts into the dashboard.

While there are two engine choices, there are three variants as the 2-litre engine is available with either Standard or Active specs priced from RM123,888 and RM138,888, respectively. The Kona the 1.6 Turbo is priced from RM151,888.

Like the new Sonata, HSDM is offering the Kona at a special introductory price for a limited time. The 2.0 variant will be priced at RM130,888 for the Kona Active and the Kona 1.6 Turbo will be RM143,888 (Peninsula Malaysia, excluding insurance).

Kia developing more advanced vehicles for military use

Transport for armed forces are required to be very tough and reliable, given the sort of conditions they are going to be used in. As such, they would usually have proven and mature engineering and technology, not necessarily the latest or most advanced. However, automobile technology is changing significantly with the move towards electric vehicles, autonomous driving and alternative fuels. Therefore, even development of military vehicles will have to move in this direction.

Business with the military is often confidential for security reasons but Kia Motors has provided some insights into the future vehicles it is developing for the Korean military. A mid-sized standard vehicle development project will see the replacement of 2.5-ton and 5-ton military standard vehicles currently in operation, and the development of new 5-ton bulletproof vehicles.

Joint investment project with miltary
The project is a joint investment by the Korean military and Kia Motors. Prototypes are expected to be running before the end of this year and undergo rigorous evaluations in 2021. The company’s goal is to begin supplying the new vehicles for military deployment from 2024

The standard vehicles will be equipped with a range of the commercial technologies, including high-torque 7-litre diesel engines and automatic transmission systems, ABS and Anti-Spin Regulator. Other features will include Rear Parking Assist, Around View Monitor and satellite navigation.

Modular approach
Kia is using a modular approach to developing new vehicles on the platform so as to be able to develop variants in future. These would be vehicles equipped with a range of weapons systems, and those designed with more specialized specifications and technologies.

The company has developed a conceptual brief for its new military all-terrain vehicles (ATV). These will not only be deployed for military purposes but will also be used in various fields, such as industrial and leisure sectors, drawing on bare chassis from the robust Kia Mohave SUV. The company will also apply technology and know-how from military vehicle development to improve the durability of its road-going SUVs.

Autonomous vehicles
The advanced R&D covers autonomous driving technology for military vehicles which could assist with delivering supplies. Additionally, Kia is exploring the potential for hydrogen fuel cell technology across diverse military applications, including fuel cell vehicles and emergency power generators. Fuel cell technology is considered suitable for future military vehicles as it can supply large amounts of electricity in combat environments.

To-date, Kia has supplied 9 model types and 100 derivatives, and produced a total of 140,000 military vehicles. It created Korea’s first multipurpose tactical vehicle and established a full line-up production system for military vehicles ranging from small to large segments.

At the start of 2020, Kia announced its ‘Plan S’ mid to long-term strategy, encompassing a range of diversified business activities which include the development of Purpose-Built Vehicles (PBVs).
