Hyundai i-Care Plus programme provides free engine oil.
Low Yuan Lung, Managing Director of HSDM, said the new customer loyalty programmes are testimony to the company’s promise in offering distinctive value to Hyundai car owners here, in the spirit of its tagline ‘Geared for Distinction’. “We hope to bring more value and benefits to our customers through such specially designed programmes as we focus on enhancing the customer experience with Hyundai,” he said.
While the Lexus RX is often regarded as the model that took SUVs into the premium segment, its sister model, the Toyota Harrier, also did the same. The only thing was that while the RX was marketed globally, the Harrier was primarily for the Japanese domestic market as the Lexus brand was not introduced there in 1997 when the RX was launched. However, in a number of places, including Malaysia, the Harrier was brought in by private importers and became very popular. It was never officially sold by UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) until 2018 and with the popularity built up over 20 years, it met with strong response with initial shipments from Japan quickly sold out.
First three generations of the Harrier.
Today, the all-new fourth generation is officially launched with a price of RM249,706.50, excluding insurance for registration in Peninsular Malaysia. Only the 2.0 Luxury version is available, and customers can choose from 5 exterior colours (extra charge for White Pearl CS and Precious Black colours).
5-year warranty and aftersales support assured
According to UMWT, Malaysia is one of only two countries outside Japan where the new Harrier is sold officially with full warranty and aftersales support. The 5-year unlimited mileage warranty and assurance of parts and service are something that were not available from private importers which has been a strong selling point for the model. Furthermore, the company also provides owners with Toyota 24 Seven Road Assist for peace of mind.
Like other recent Toyota models, the new generation (incidentally, Lexus no longer shared the model since the previous generation and the Harrier is an independent development), is designed around Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA) with the GA-K platform. TNGA’s versatility and flexibility allows it to be used for sedans like the Corolla and also SUVs like the RAV4 and Harrier, and even electrified models like the Prius. Besides creating a highly rigid body structure, the centre of gravity is also lower which enhances stability, handling, agility and ride comfort.
Wider but lower body
The overall size of the new Harrier is almost the same as before but the width has gained 20 mm while an extra 30 mm has been added to the wheelbase, both increases obviously benefitting interior space. Although there is still good ground clearance, as would be expected of a SUV, the overall height is now 30 mm lower.
The profile follows the same coupe-like form with a design concept Toyota calls ‘Dignified Elegance’. The front end has a sharper appearance with the eye-catching slim Bi-LED headlamps on either side. The L-shaped Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) also provide a strong and distinctive visual signature apart from enhancing daytime visibility. The rear has a clean design, defined by a thin LED strip for the full width, while twin exhaust pipes with oval baffles add a sporty touch.
‘Dignified Elegance’
The ‘Dignified Elegance’ concept is also adopted for the interior which gets a more premium feel. The occupants are welcomed with the Illuminated Entry System at the front door sills which is complemented by blue LED illumination inside. Premium materials used include thick black leather with woodgrain and silver ornamentation.
Any driver should be able to get the right and comfortable seating position with 12-way power adjustment for the seat, and for ease of getting in and out, the steering wheel automatically rises out of the way when the engine is switched off and the door opened.
The Automatic Dual-Zone Air Conditioning system has nanoeX technology which generates ions. First introduced with a previous generation of the Camry, nanoeX technology is known to deactivate viruses which is, of course, a very welcome feature in these times. It also keeps the air fresh and clean.
High-tech features
Besides the bright and clear Optitron instrument panel, the driver can also refer to the standard Head-Up Display (HUD) which is projected on the windscreen. Information show includes road speed, gear position, Driving Support System (directions, ACC display, LDA Display, Parking Sensor), audio mode with song titles, and warning alerts. That’s certainly a lot more than the early HUDs which showed only the speed.
The new Harrier has Panoramic Sunroof with electrochromatic glass which can alter the intensity of light passing through at the touch of a switch. The effect is like that of traditional paper windows found in Japan, enhancing comfort. The glass panels cover almost the entire length of the roof so a lot of light can be allowed in when sunlight conditions are not too harsh or at night.
The other high-tech feature is the new Digital Display Rear View Mirror. This shows live images from a wide-angle high-definition camera at the back to give greater night-driving clarity and eliminates glare from oncoming headlights.
Other standard features include a wireless charging pad, USB ports, Kick Sensor Powered Back Door, Electric Parking Brake, and an advanced infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The 8-inch capacitive touchscreen serves the infotainment system as well as shows the images from the rearview camera. Front and rear digital video cameras are also fitted while a Vehicle Telematics System can keep track of the vehicle’s location at all times.
One area that Toyota engineers paid special attention to was reduction of Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH). The new Harrier is claimed to be much quieter than before, thanks to the use of highly-efficient sound-absorbing glass on the windows. Sound-absorbing materials and their placement were optimized to lower NVH as well while sealing at the doors is improved to stop wind noise from seeping in.
New Dynamic Force engine
The Harrier is powered by Toyota’s latest Dynamic Force (M20A-FKS) 4-cylinder DOHC engine with Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) that operates electronically for quicker response. As before, it is a 2-litre engine but now has improved output of 173 ps/203 Nm without turbocharging.
A Direct Shift Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with Sequential Shiftmatic, allows the seamless shifting of gears. The driver can choose from three modes – ECO, Normal and Sport – to suit driving conditions or personal preference. ECO and Sport modes will prioritise fuel economy or acceleration, respectively, while the Normal mode offers a good balance of performance and fuel efficiency.
The TNGA chassis has front MacPherson struts with trailing wishbones at the rear, with optimized suspension geometry for balanced and predictable handling, while maintaining a high standard of ride comfort. The 18-inch alloy wheels at each corner are fitted with 225/60 tyres.
Toyota Safety Sense
Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) is the suite of integrated active systems that help the driver to avoid an accident, especially front collisions. Most of the latest Toyota models have TSS but the systems vary depending on the model. In the case of the new Harrier, there is a Pre-Crash System, Lane Departure Alert, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Adaptive Highbeam System. These use a camera and radar to scan the road ahead and identify vehicles and the data is analysed by a computer to determine if there is any danger of a collision. The Pre-Crash system has autonomous capability, meaning that it will activate the brakes if the driver does not take corrective action if a possible collision is detected.
Additionally, there’s a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Braking, and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System. The 4-wheel disc brake system is managed by ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution and Brake Assist, while Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control will help stabilize the vehicle on slippery surfaces.
Even with the best active safety systems, an accident can still occur and to minimize injuries, there are 7 SRS airbags around the cabin (one for the driver’s knees). These include curtain airbags which deploy downwards over the windows and besides providing cushioning, they also reduce the chance of ejection from the cabin during violent crashes. ISOFIX points are provided in the rear seats for compatible childseats which are now required by law.
The Mitsubishi Triton has always been among the more stylish pick-ups around, combining a good-looking design with the rugged qualities that such vehicles must have. The current generation has been in the market since early 2019 and has built up its own following. Malaysian sales from April 2020- March 2021 totalled 7,598 units, a 32% increase in sales as compared to same period in the previous Financial Year of the company.
For 2021, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) is introducing the new Triton Athlete which will be flagship model of the range, replacing the Triton Adventure X. The ‘Athlete’ name is not new, having been used in 2018 for the previous generation.
Black theme
For the 2021 version, it has a black theme with a choice of three body colours- Sun Flare Orange Pearl, White Diamond and Jet Black Mica. Besides a gloss black front under garnish and ‘Dynamic Shield’ front design incorporating a glossy black radiator grille, the black theme also encompasses the side mirrors, door handles, aero type window deflectors, 18-inch gloss black rims and side-steps.
The double cab is appointed appropriately as the flagship version and has orange-stitching for the leather-wrapped steering wheel, gear knob and also comes with LED illuminated scuff plates on the door sills. Other useful features include an All-Round Monitor, Driving Video Recorder and 7-Inch Touchscreen Audio system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto as standard. The upgrades are offered by MMM authorized dealers at all Mitsubishi Motors showroom nationwide. For rear occupant comfort, there is also a rear air circulator.
Proven drivetrain with MIVEC engine
The Triton Athlete continues with a proven 2.4-litre MIVEC turbodiesel engine with variable valve timing which produces 181 ps/430 Nm. The Super Select 4WD II system, which can be used without having to stop the vehicle, has an off-road mode for optimum traction and handling characteristics in any terrain. There is also Hill Descent Control which helps the driver go down a slope safely, with the computer managing the speed and all the driver has to do is steer and look out for obstacles.
Pick-ups these days have similar safety systems as passenger cars and the Triton Athlete is a good example. It comes with standard Forward Collision Mitigation, Blind Spot Warning with Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System, Auto High Beam and 7 airbags.
5-year warranty
Priced from RM141,500 (without insurance in Peninsular Malaysia), the new Triton Athlete comes with a factory warranty of 5 years, or maximum of 200,000 kms after registration.
Besides the Triton Athlete, MMM also imports from Thailand five other variants which range in price from RM79,890 to RM121,000 (excluding insurance) with varying specifications to suit different requirements and budgets.
Cabin ventilation systems in cars used to have either fresh air brought in from outside, or recirculated air. In some countries, manufacturers added filters especially to trap pollen and help those who had allergies. But generally, the system was quite straightforward and advancements were largely in improving cooling (or heating) efficiency and distribution of air.
Over the past 20 years, companies like Volvo have gone further to improve air quality, and some systems also have ion generators to freshen the air. Now Honda has developed a premium cabin air filter which it says can reliably captures viral aerosols, is highly effective at capturing a wide range of harmful germs, allergens and even viruses related to significant health problems, – including infection risks associated with the SARS COV-2 virus or what the world knows as COVID-19.
Honda genuine accessory
The Honda premium cabin air filter was developed in cooperation with Freudenberg of Germany and is offered as a new Honda genuine spare part in the European market, as an alternative to the standard Honda pollen filter in most recent models.
“As society is now more aware than even of the impact of germs and viruses such as COVID-19, we expect the demand for protective solutions to increase rapidly. This premium cabin air filter is a great example of Honda working together rapidly with its suppliers to deliver a product of real benefit that improves the health and safety of driver and occupants,” said Eiichi Hino, President Honda Access Europe NV.
Significantly reducing concentration of viral aerosols
This new premium cabin air filter provides active protection by significantly reducing the concentration of viral aerosols. This is achieved by a unique multi-layer design that effectively filters, captures and suppresses noxious environmental gases as well as inorganic and biological particles and aerosols.
The premium cabin air filter is available as a Honda accessory for recent models, including the new Honda e.
4-layer filtration system for maximum protection
The fine particle filtration layers provide improved protection against virus transmission in comparison to standard filters. They demonstrably separate not only droplets (> 5 μm), but also critical viral aerosols (droplet nuclei significantly below 5 μm).
The filter can trap more than 90% of viral aerosols and an innovative second step inactivates almost 100% of the captured viral load via a bio-functional layer impregnated with fruit extract. The first two microfibre layers of the Honda premium cabin air filter capture most ultrafine aerosols, dust and pollen while the third layer, made of activated carbon, is responsible for the adsorption of harmful pollution such as particulates and acid gases.
An innovative fourth bio-functional layer coated with the active substance of fruit extract then effectively inactivates captured viral aerosols and prevents them from being released back into the cabin air. This has been conclusively proved by a comprehensive series of tests conducted in collaboration with the Austrian Research Institute OFI.
Fresh air also important
Coronaviruses are spread in droplets produced when those affected sneeze, cough or breathe and can remain infectious on surfaces for hours or even days. Wind disturbances, temperature changes and humidity can all cause that these particles become airborne again, at which point they can be picked up by the filter. To lower the infection risk in the vehicle cabin, it is generally recommended to increase the fresh air supply to reduce the concentration of aerosols. In recirculation mode, removing viruses from the air largely depends on the efficiency of the filtration system and the air exchange rate.
UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) reports strong growth in sales for the first quarter (Q1) of 2021. The Toyota/Lexus importer and distributor said the total number of new Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold in the first 3 months of the year were more than 17,000 units with a market share of approximately 12.1%, an increase of 62% year-on-year compared to the sales volume for the same period in 2020.
Commenting on the achievement, UMWT’s President, Ravindran K., said: “During the first quarter of 2020, the market was already declining due to the pandemic. This year, it’s a different story; with the situation easing as well as the support by the government through the PENJANA program that exempts sales tax partially or fully until June 30 this year, new vehicle sales have been consistently high. In fact, for Toyota, our momentum started in December when we launched the Toyota GR Yaris and Vios GR-Sport which excited the market and set a positive note to enter 2021.”
Bestselling models
The bestselling models were the Vios and the Hilux, the latter being the market leader, accounting for approximately 56% of the pick-up truck market in the first quarter. The updated versions of the Innova and Fortuner were also introduced early in the year with new styling and extra value-added features.
2021 Vios and Vios GR-Sport
The Yaris hatchback has been consistently leading in its Non-National hatchback segment with Q1 estimated market share of 73%. Meanwhile, the Vios and sportier Vios GR-Sport (GR-S) version saw approximately 5,600 units sold since their launch. With the addition of the sporty, enhanced performance GR-S, the appeal of this model is expected to increase. Furthermore, the Vios Challenge One-Make Race Series that is now in its fourth season has left a strong impression on the public with regards to the dynamic side of the model.
GR Yaris sales exceeded expectations
Sales of the GR Yaris, imported from Japan, exceeded expectations. Most of the units allocated for the Malaysian market (out of 25,000 units for worldwide sales) were booked within a month of launch. The strong response mirrored that in other markets as enthusiasts could not resist owning the competition-ready hatchback that has the world’s most powerful 3-cylinder engine (261 bhp/360 Nm) and the lightest and smallest 1.6-litre turbo unit currently in production.
The GR Yaris (above) is one of three models in Toyota’s high-performance GR brand which are available in Malaysia. The other models are the GR Supra and Vios GR-Sport. These models are exclusively sold through dealerships with the GR Garage that is dedicated to the brand.
Early response to the all-new Toyota Corolla Cross launched in March indicates that it is a winner. With the strong demand, UMW Toyota Motor has been encouraged to consider local assembly of the model to increase available stocks and this could happen by the end of 2021.
“Malaysia has seen strong Toyota sales this year due to improving conditions of the pandemic. With our wider line-up of models and exciting offerings, we are confident that our sales volume will grow steadily this year and certainly exceed the volume recorded in 2020. As always, we thank our loyal customers and also welcome those who are owning a Toyota for the first time,” said Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor.

Promotions for Hari Raya
With the Hari Raya festive season coming up during the second quarter, UMWT will be running the ‘Countless Rewards’ promotion, encouraging purchases to be made before the sales tax exemption period ends on June 30. The exemption is not only for locally assembled models but also imported ones such as the Alphard, RAV4, GR Supra and Camry.
Financing schemes available include the EZ Beli scheme which offers customers low instalments (depending on the model). Additionally, savings are available with Toyota Service Savers which provides owners lower maintenance cost of their vehicles.
How long do you think it takes to glance at a SMS (text message on your mobilephone) when you’re driving? One second? Two seconds? You’re not alone. Most drivers believe that texting and driving creates only a momentary distraction. This week, Lexus in the USA has released a new video to shatter this common misconception. The average length of time it actually takes to send or receive a text message when you’re behind the wheel is 4.6 seconds, according to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Driving for 4.6 seconds with eyes closed
The company’s initiative is in support of national Distracted Driving Awareness Month, established by the American National Safety Council (NSC) more than 10 years ago. Distracted driving is dangerous, claiming 3,142 lives in 2019 (the most recent available data) in America, according to NHTSA. Texting is the most alarming distraction: at about 90 km/h, taking your eyes off the road for 4.6 seconds is like driving the length of an entire football field – with your eyes closed.
In the video called “Driving Disrupted,” Lexus demonstrates exactly what happens when drivers can no longer see the road for 4.6 seconds. Participants get behind the wheel of a Lexus NX on a closed course, thinking they’re taking SUV for a routine test drive. What they don’t know is that they’re not driving an ordinary NX. They’re driving a one-of-a-kind specially modified vehicle called the NX 4.6. It’s equipped with electrochromic technology that turns the windscreen and windows from transparent to opaque instantaneously, completely obscuring the driver’s view for 4.6 seconds. The video captures the chaos that ensues.

“Lexus wants to bring awareness to safety behind the wheel by changing perceptions about texting and driving,” said Vinay Shahani, Vice-President of Lexus marketing. “Even the most advanced safety systems on the road today can’t replace the undivided attention of the driver.”
In Malaysia, under Rule 17A, LN166/59, a motorist will be subject to fines of up to RM1,000, or jail time of up to 3 months. Second-time offenders are subject to fines of up to RM2,000, and/or jail time of up to 6 months. The offence has been considered a non-compoundable offence since the middle of 2020, and offenders will be required to make a court appearance before a magistrate to settle individual cases. Compoundable offences have the provision where the motorist, in admitting guilt, is allowed to pay a specific fine without having to go to court.
About electrochromic glass
By the way, about that electrochromic technology for the glass. It’s like the photochromic sunglasses that darken in strong lighting conditions but more advanced for use in cars. There are various technologies for this, among them using a small electrical charge (at the press of a button) to move lithium ions so that the glass is either light or dark. It therefore eliminates the need to add tinting film.
Electrochromic glass is appearing in more new models, mostly of premium brands as the technology is still fairly new (to the auto industry) and therefore expensive. Over time, like laminated glass which does not shatter when hit by a stone, prices should drop and the glass will be offered in lower-priced models.
Even before GMC’s electric HUMMER supertruck goes on sale at the end of this year, the company has revealed another model – the HUMMER EV SUV – which will make its debut in 2023. The SUV is the next chapter in the company’s revival with only EV products.
“The GMC HUMMER EVs were envisioned to be the most capable and compelling electric supertrucks ever,” said Duncan Aldred, Global Vice-President of Buick and GMC. “The new HUMMER EV SUV is the next chapter, which will offer many options for customers to tailor the truck to their lifestyles, while continuing to encourage them to forge new paths with zero emissions.”
Starting with Edition 1
Driven by General Motors’ next-generation Ultium Platform, the new EV SUV will launch with an exclusive Edition 1. This will give the customer a choice to equip the vehicle for optimal driving range or maximum off-road capability. As standard, the Edition 1 will have 22-inch premium wheels, assist steps and floorliners.

The SUV’s look is rugged, like the pick-up truck, but has a different rear design with a full-size spare tyre mounted in the classic SUV fashion. Inside, a similar 5-passenger layout from the pick-up remains and includes a large and useful rear cargo area.
Crabwalk and Extract Mode
GMC is highlighting the superior capabilities of the new SUV while are possible with the HUMMER EV’s signature features such as CrabWalk, a revolutionary setting utilizing 4-wheel steer to drive diagonally at low speeds – like a crab. This will give a capability no other competitive SUV can offer. There is also Extract Mode which is a first-of-its-kind system that makes full use of the Adaptive Air Suspension to raise the vehicle about 150 mm to get over tough obstacles. This is extra ground clearance in addition to the already tall ride height.

Additionally, all HUMMER EV SUV models will feature the enhanced version of Super Cruise, an optional driver-assistance technology offering hands-free driving on more than 320,000 kms of enabled roads, and a new automatic lane-changing feature, where the system can determine when a lane change is optimal and initiate the manoeuvre, while following signaling protocols.
Production and pricing in 2023
Production will begin in early 2023, and GMC is able to indicate the starting price of the Edition 1 which will be US$105,595 (about RM436,265 at today’s exchange rate). When equipped with the Extreme Off-Road Package, the starting price will be about 4.7% more.
Caterham Cars is no longer owned by Malaysians Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and Datuk Kamarudin Meranun (who became owners in 2011), having been acquired by VT Holdings of Japan. The automotive group, which has been the importer for the Seven since 2009, assumes custodianship of the legendary British sportscar brand which is almost 50 years old.
VT Holdings currently sells over 120 cars annually and is one of Japan’s largest retailer groups with over 200 showrooms nationwide. It also has investments in the UK, Spain, Thailand and South Africa, and imports two and four-wheeled brands such as Royal Enfield and Lotus for the Japanese market.
Motorsport, and the global track-day communities, have always played a central role in Caterham’s commercial success. The brand now joins a group led by Chief Executive Kazuho Takahashi, who shares the same passions, having raced competitively in JGTC, Super GT and Super Taikyu championships for the past 20 years.
Commenting on the acquisition, Mr. Takahashi said: “VT Holdings is proud to welcome Caterham to the group. We have not only purchased a globally renowned performance car manufacturer but become custodians of a motoring legend. We will protect and develop the Seven to meet the legislative challenges that lie ahead.”
Caterham Cars began as a Lotus 7 dealer during the 1960s and when Lotus discontinued the model, the dealer, Graham Nearn, purchased the rights to continue using the Seven design and made the cars in a small volume. The Seven has remained popular and highly regarded by car enthusiasts.
Caterham Cars today exports to 20 markets globally with exports accounting for 60% of its annual new car sales volume.
