COVID-19 Facemask

♦ The drama started seconds after the cars left the grid and charged into the first few turns, with Romain Grosjean crashing and a big fire starting. Red flags appeared immediately, bringing the race to a stop and requiring the cars to return to the pits.

♦ Grosjean had collided with Daniil Kvyat and his car left the track, slamming into the barriers and splitting in half! It is believed that the fire started due to the severe impact that probably resulted in fuel leaking. Grosjean was unhurt (apart from some burns) and quickly attended to by the team in the medical car that came up behind.

♦ Observers, commentators and racing drivers were unanimous in recognising the great advances that have been taken in safety by the FIA and various people 30 years ago. That is why Grosjean survived what has been described as a shocking crash, never before seen in a race. The quick and brave actions of the track personnel were also commended.

♦ The race was suspended for about 45 minutes and then the cars were flagged off for a restart with a grid order determined by the Stewards. Lewis Hamilton, who had snatched the lead right from the start, was in pole position, followed by Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas.

♦ And there was drama again! Lance Stroll came in contact with Kvyat, and as the Canadian driver’s car went over the wheels of the othee car, it tipped over and ended upside down. Though Stroll was unhurt and got out, the Safety Car was despatched which meant the cars had to get in convoy behind it. Bottas took the opportunity to rush to the pits to change tyres as pressure loss had been detected.

♦ Only 5 laps had been run up to the point Stroll overturned and the race had started one and a half hours earlier. When the Safety Car pull away, it was the ninth lap and hopefully the cars would be able to complete their first full lap of racing.

♦ After discussion, the Stewards decided that Kyvat was at fault for causing the accident with Stroll and a 10-second time penalty was given. The Russian driver served the penalty when he came into the pits on lap 18.

♦ Around the 20-lap mark, most of the cars began entering the pits for a tyre change, moving to medium or hard compounds.

♦ At the halfway point in the race, Hamilton was still staying ahead of Verstappen with a gap of around 4 seconds. Way back was Perez in a comfortable third, 18 seconds away with Alexander Albon closing in. In spite of the drama, only two drivers – Grosjean and Stroll – were out of the Bahrain GP.

♦ Bottas and Sebastian Vettel were not having a good race from the start, the Mercedes driver struggling around 11 position and the Ferrari driver reporting difficulties driving the car.

♦ With 5 laps remaining, the field had pretty much settled and the drivers were probably just waiting for the race to end. Carlos Sainz with Pierre Gasly and then took his sixth position, leaving Gasly to deal with Daniel Ricciardo who was coming up behind fast.

♦ But the Bahrain drama was not finished as flames appeared from the back of Perez’ car on lap 54! He pulled over and quickly jumped out, and out came the Safety Car as well – with 3 laps remaining. Perez departure allowed Albon to get a podium place.

♦ And so the race with extraordinary events ended with the Safety Car leading the winner – Lewis Hamilton – across the finish line.

Formula E, the all-electric single-seater championship series, was affected by the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic and like other motorsports events, its calendar was disrupted. Some events in its sixth season were cancelled and 6 closing rounds were held in Berlin in August.

Season 7 starts off in Santiago, Chile, and hopefully, the 14-race calendar in 12 cities around the world will not be disrupted. The FIA has granted the event World Championship status as it has met the criteria of having no less than 4 manufacturer competitors and has run races on three continents.

With a month and a half to go, some of the 12 confirmed teams are unveiling their new racing cars for the 2020/2021 season. The homologation period is extended and teams can choose to introduce a new powertrain for this coming season for a 2-year runout or continue with their current system for next season before homologating a new set-up for a single season the year after.

Jaguar Racing has opted for a new powertrain developed in-house for its I-TYPE 5 racing car, which it will have to use for two seasons. The engineers have focussed on efficiency gains, reduced weight and lowered the centre of gravity of the powertrain. New suspension will provide greater adjustment from track to track and a more efficient invertor will improve switching speeds and performance. The state-of-the-art invertor also features 24-carat gold due to its highly conductive properties.

Dow, the materials science company, joins the team as an Official Partner and brings material expertise with its MobilityScience platform and its polyolefin, polyurethanes acrylic, specialty chemical and silicone technologies.

Jaguar Racing will also debut the use of new sustainable materials called TYPEFIBRE, which the car’s new prototype seat is made from. It will be tested at speed in different temperatures, loads and environments around the world as part of the team’s Race to Innovate mission – sharing the benefits of race technology with road cars and, in turn, Jaguar customers.

The Audi e-tron FE07 that has been developed by Audi Sport for the new season with a new powertrain – the Audi MGU05 motor-generator unit. Developed in-house, the electric one-speed drivetrain has an internal rotor concept, external magnets, a highly efficient cooling system and 6  electrical phases.

The engineers managed to save weight compared to the previous unit by using lightweight materials and intelligent integration inside the vehicle. “We were able to directly reinvest these savings in the new MGU for the benefit of enhanced efficiency. Even so, the new MGU inverter unit weighs less than 35 kgs. This was an exceptional achievement by the whole team,” said Stefan Aicher, Head of Development e-Drive at Audi Sport.

“While, in recent years a continually optimized version of the powertrain – jointly developed with technology partner Schaeffler – was always used, work on the new MGU inverter unit for the coming season started from scratch. We went to the limits in all areas of this project,” he revealed.

Efficiency is the key factor of success in Formula E, so reduction of energy loss within the system has been targeted to be an absolute minimum. The extensive work done on in-house test benches was a decisive factor in achieving this objective. We have achieved an overall efficiency of more than 95% for our powertrain. The new MGU inverter unit has an efficiency of even more than 97% in all relevant driving conditions,” said Tristan Summerscale, Formula E Project Leader at Audi Sport.

The compact size combined with high performance is particularly impressive. “If you compare our MGU with an internal combustion engine delivering a comparable power output of 250 kW, our efficiency is not only twice as high, but our weight of less than 35 kgs is also much lighter,” added Summerscale. “This clearly shows what an efficient solution an electric powertrain is.”

The disrupted 2020 Formula 1 World Championship enters its closing phase this weekend with the first part of a Middle East triple-header. It will certainly be gruelling for the teams who have endured a compressed calendar that only started in the second half of the year after the COVID-19 pandemic forced postponements and cancellations as countries tried to get the pandemic under control.

The first of the final three rounds will be the Bahrain Grand Prix at the circuit in Sakhir. It has been the venue of the Bahrain GP since 2004 and only in 2011 was the event not run due to domestic problems.

There are a few circuit layouts and for this weekend, the GP Circuit will be used. This has 15 turns and a lap length of 5.412 kms. Regardless of which circuit, the conditions are tough and the surface is highly abrasive. Despite the track’s rural location, surrounded by sandy desert, the sand does not actually present the cars with any major issues and the circuit surface (surrounded by 1,120 palm trees) can clean up very quickly.

One of the key considerations will be traction coming out of slower corners and protecting the rear tyres. Pirelli is offering the C2, C3 and C4 tyres this weekend at Sakhir, one compound softer than used in 2019 when most drivers opted for a 2-stop strategy.

Turn 10 is one of the trickiest corners because it has a long, combined corner entry that gets tighter towards the apex – which is blind over a crest. Drivers begin to apply the brakes while also negotiating the wide corner arc of Turn 9 and the track drops away at the apex. All of these factors cause the front-left tyre to go light and increase the risk of a lock-up. The balance is on a knife-edge through this sequence, as drivers battle cornering and braking, so you may see mistakes at this point on the track.

The Bahrain Grand Prix is always punishing on the brakes, with 7 braking events and 3 of those being classified as ‘heavy’ by engineers in the Mercedes-AMG team. Mechanical grip is also an important area in Bahrain, to propel the cars out of the slow turns. This is in stark contrast to the set-up approach for tracks like Silverstone and Mugello, where high-speed corner performance is the priority.

The 57-lap race starts at twilight; as the light dims and temperatures fall to around 26 degrees C., the drivers will be circulating in lighting from 495 posts. Over the projected two hours of the race, they should cover 308 kms, averaging 58 gear-changes on each lap.

Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari have had the most victories at this circuit, the driver having won 4 times and the team having won 6 times. Lewis Hamilton has won 3 times so a win tomorrow will bring him equal to the German driver.

This may be the worst year ever for the auto industry (though sales in the past few months have actually been high) with the MCO forcing a shutdown of businesses and factories. Production was affected and sales too were virtually non-existent for at least one month. Nevertheless, the government’s assistance in the form of sales tax exemption seems to have helped to encourage people to buy new vehicles.

For Hyundai Sime Darby Motors (HSDM), that’s good news since it has had a number of brand new models in the pipeline and next month, it will launch yet another one – the 7th generation Hyundai Elantra. The popular global model of the Korean carmaker was among the early ones to be launched online as the typical live launch was not possible due to the pandemic and lockdown situation. Hyundai broadcast the new Elantra’s launch worldwide from Hollywood on March 17, and 9 months later, it will be in Malaysian showrooms.

Parametric Dynamics in design
As with the recent new models, the Elantra gets a distinctive new look with adoption of Hyundai’s new design language. This design language uses ‘Parametric Dynamics’ for a futuristic look. The 3-dimensional design is carefully crafted like a well-cut jewel with stark wide side lines.

The coupe-like body is longer, lower, and wider compared to the 6th-generation model with the front cowl point moved back around 50 mm. These minor changes dramatically changed the shape of the car but had limited impact on cabin space. In fact, Hyundai says most key interior dimensions increased.

Smartstream powertrain
HSDM aims to position the new Elantra as a trendsetter for C-segment cars. It will come with a 1.6-litre Smartstream powertrain which includes an Intelligent Variable Transmission. The efficient engine new is capable of producing 123 ps/154 Nm.

Low Yuan Lung, MD of Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors, said the new Elantra with its differentiating design ‘will thrill the market’. “The new look, which takes inspiration from geometric crystals’ cut body surfaces, is expected to wow customers due to its uniqueness,” he added.

“Not only does the car exude sophistication and sportiness, but it also offers a fulfilling driving experience,” he promised. “It is fun to drive a car, loaded with a host of safety and convenience features such as parking distance warning and wireless phone charging.”

‘Immersive cocoon’ interior
Besides the striking exterior design, the interior is like an ‘immersive cocoon’ that envelopes the driver. Described as being like entering an airplane cockpit, there is a large interface consisting of two displays – a 10.25-inch Supervision TFT display and an 8-inch floating panel. All information to operate the car and also the infotainments systems is easily viewed.

The new Elantra will also come with Hyundai SmartSense, a suite of driver assistance systems that work together to help the driver avoid an accident. These include automatic emergency braking (AEB) and smart cruise control which will even bring the car to a stop if necessary and automatically resume movement.

HSDM has not revealed the price of the new model other than that its estimated price is ‘RM1XX,888’ (the current Elantra with a 2-litre engine has been priced around RM110,000). Bookings are accepted now with a fee of RM777.

Companies periodically demonstrate their corporate social responsibility (CSR) by supporting worthwhile causes or organizing and sponsoring activities for the benefit of communities. In some cases, they may also fund efforts to create awareness of conservation activities to prevent certain wildlife from becoming extinct.

One example is the latest initiative by Mazda Philippines which is giving support to the efforts of the Katala Foundation, a non-profit NGO in the country that protects and conserves wildlife. The initiative by the Mazda distributor is to help raise awareness for pangolins, a critically endangered species and believed to be the world’s most trafficked mammal.

Palawan, an island on the southwestern side of the Philippines, is the natural habitat of the pangolin which is from the anteater family. Its name is said to be originally derived from the Malay word ‘pengguling‘, which means ‘one who rolls up’.

Besides special graphics depicting the pangolin, the special edition – developed from the top version for the market – also comes with special accessories and customization.

Engineered for taking on tough duties in challenging terrain, the pick-up can take a payload of up to 1,086 kgs and tow a trailer or another vehicle weighing up to 3,500 kgs.

Even though there are accessories fitted, Mazda Philippines is selling the BT-50 Pangolin Edition for less than a standard BT-50, at a retail price of 1,400,000 pesos (about RM118,400).

The CSR initiative of Mazda Philippines mirrors the caring culture of Bermaz Auto Berhad, its parent company based in Malaysia. 5 years ago, it established the Mazda Medicare Fund (MMF) which provides help to renal patients urgently in need of life-saving haemodialysis but have financial constraints.

With the MMF, eligible patients can receive subsidized haemodialysis treatments at designated dialysis centres nationwide. Since 2015, the MMF has contributed a total of RM2.4 million which has supported more than 176 patients throughout Malaysia.

High-performance SUV
Bentley’s proven 4-litre V8 turbocharged engine, which develops 550 ps/770 Nm, is mated to an 8-speed transmission. Like other luxury SUVs, very high performance is available for the driver in a hurry. The claimed 0 to 100 km/h time is 4.5 seconds, with a top speed of 290 km/h. COVID-19

The 3rd Hot Wheels Legends Tour which was run recently saw Malaysia being the first host as well as the first Asian country to be invited to join the event. Art of Speed hosted the event which is normally held on-ground but had to be conducted online this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, that didn’t see diminished interest and over 1 million Hot Wheels fans across the globe tuned in to watch the livestream of the Finals.

67 local entries

Twelve out of the 67 local entries were chosen to be showcased before the panel of the judges made up of respected Hot Wheels designers. After the votes were cast, it was Johor-native Ravinder Singh   who clinched the coveted spot in the Finals as one of 13 international entries with his ‘Mercenary’, a modified Morris Minor.

Each entry was judged on three criteria: Authenticity, which is a measure of how well a car captures that genuine Hot Wheels spirit; Creativity, based on how unique the build is; and Garage Spirit, which carries the unmistakable air of ‘built not bought’.

Ravinder’s ‘Mercenary’ carried a clear inspiration from American hotrods but was created from a British Morris Minor. The build was praised for its use of period-correct tyres and unique choice of parts – most of which aren’t available in the USA – giving it a distinct and memorable silhouette. The motorhead described the Mercenary as ‘built for himself to bring his vision to life’.

Of the thousands of submissions from around the world, 13 finalists were chosen with the winner being Riley Stair from California. His 1970 Pontiac Trans Am will be immortalised as an iconic 1:64 Hot Wheels diecast model.

Greater power for the legendary V8
‘Modificata’, in Ferrari terminology, means designs that have been evolved for better performance. Possessing the already impressive performance of the 488 GT3 and the 488 GTE, the 488 GT Modificata gets new technologies linked mainly to a powertrain no longer limited by the FIA Balance of Performance.

The legendary twin-turbo V8 has received specific components and materials from the racing engine, with more extreme and high-performance mapping. Maximum power delivered is now around 700 ps, flowing through a gearbox available with different transmission ratios and a carbonfibre clutch  which copes with the increased power and torque.

The bodywork has completely revamped high-downforce aerodynamics, shifting the pressure centre forward. This generates higher downforce at the front without increasing overall drag, making for better efficiency and sensitivity to changes in rear wing angle.

Apart from the aluminium roof and uprights, the bodywork is entirely in carbonfibre like the 488 GTE. This contributes to a downforce of over 1,000 kgs at 230 km/h.

Enhanced driving dynamics
The engineers opted to use the 488 GTE’s suspension, with the braking system developed in partnership with Brembo. It features the low residual torque calipers that are fitted to world championship cars, coupled with an ABS system borrowed from the 488 GT3 Evo 2020, with settings customised. This synergy is said to provide drivers with formidable handling and powerful, stable braking with limited fading.

Although not meeting motorsport regulations, the car is nevertheless engineered to high safety standards, and fitted with the relevant safety equipment like a roll-cage, safety harnesses, etc.

The extensive standard equipment of the 488 GT Modificata includes a V-Box acquisition system, which is combined with Bosch’s telemetry data acquisition system. The expandable system allows data to be downloaded directly onto a USB stick. The high-resolution rearview camera, second seat and TPMS system for measuring tyre temperature and pressure also come as standard. Interestingly, even though the car is intended only for track use, there is air-conditioning installed.

Full personalisation available
Only a limited number will be built, and each car can be extensively customized on exterior and interior. The 488 GT Modificata will be admitted to Club Competizioni GT events which aims to bring back to the track the most significant and successful cars in the recent history of Ferrari closed-wheel racing.

In 2021, customers will have the chance to participate in 5events on tracks such as the Virginia International Raceway, Monza, Watkins Glen, Suzuka and Nürburgring, as well as the Finali Mondiali.
