‘R’ is a popular alphabet among car manufacturers as it is associated with the word ‘Racing’. Usually, ‘R’ is used it to designate the sportiest variants of their models. Volkswagen began using ‘R’ with the 3.2-litre Golf R32 model some 15 years ago and then decided to have a R variant for each Golf generation that would be the most powerful in its time.

VW R-Line

The R branding became increasingly successful and by 2010, the R GmbH division was established to look after the development and marketing of the hottest VW models. And while it has been performance-oriented, the division has this year announced that its direction will follow the trend of electrification. In fact, it has maintained the reputation of high performance even in EVs with the ID. R – the fastest car ever to race up Pikes Peak in America.

Then there’s also the R-Line which draws on the R image but without performance enhancements. The R-Line began as a trim level created by Volkswagen Individual but eventually became a range of its own, managed by the R division.

Current Golf R-Line

The first R-Line model in Malaysia was a version of the Passat CC introduced in 2012, followed by Golf Mk.7 a year later. Thus far, the Malaysian market has only had the R-Line available with the Golf but today, additional models have been launched to expand the R-Line to four models. Besides the Golf 7.5, which debuted in the early part of 2018, there is now the new Arteon R-Line, Tiguan R-Line and Passat R-Line.

Arteon R-Line (RM221,065)
The Arteon R-Line is the new flagship of the Volkswagen range in Malaysia. Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) obviously expects it to make a strong impression on the market and has invested in local assembly which is done at the plant in Pekan, Pahang.

2020 VW Arteon R-Line

“As our new flagship, the Arteon elevates the Volkswagen brand for us as it beautifully captures design, performance and function while offering a greater feeling of exclusivity. Having it as an R-Line model adds sportiness even more to the heart of the Arteon,” said VPCM’s Managing Director, Erik Winter.

The Arteon is the direct successor to the Passat CC and has the same sleekness with a fastback profile. It sits on the MQB platform (which made it easier to assemble locally) and comes with a 2-litre TSI turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine with an output of 190 ps/320 Nm.

2020 VW Arteon R-Line

Power delivery to the front wheels is through a new and improved 7-speed double wet clutch direct shift gearbox (DSG). Drivers can customize performance characteristics with five driving modes – Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport and Individual – as well as Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) which offers up to 15 selectable increments.

As a flagship model, the Arteon R-Line obviously comes with a wide range of luxury items, along with the sporty image. Front passengers can sit comfortably on the 14-way ErgoComfort seats and the driver gets an additional massage function.

For audiophiles, the Arteon is fitted with a 700W Dynaudio sound system that comprises 11 speakers plus a subwoofer, and 16-channel digital amplifier. Adding to the luxurious ambience are Silver Rise aluminium inserts, Titanium Black headliner, an analogue clock and 3-colour ambient lighting.

The 11.7-inch Digital Cockpit keeps drivers well informed with data displayed on customizable screen views (up to 6) and over 30 combination options, including 2D and 3D navigation and a full 100% map view.

For connectivity, the 9.2-inch Discover Pro touchscreen (split view) infotainment system allows drivers to connect wirelessly via Apple CarPlay, with Android Auto and Mirrorlink also available via a Type C USB port. The system has voice control and gesture control for handsfree operation.

2020 VW Arteon R-Line

A first for Volkswagen in Malaysia is the car’s Easy Close feature which provides a 20-second delayed closing of the boot, giving the driver freedom to remove items in the boot using both hands. Handsfree opening can be easily done by just placing a foot under the rear bumper.

Tiguan Allspace R-Line (RM209,575)
The new Allspace variant signifies the longer wheelbase that makes possible the addition of a third row of seating, so up to 7 persons can be accommodated. While the Tiguan Allspace Highline comes with front-wheel drive and a 1.4-litre TSI engine, the R-Line version has Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system and 19-inch alloy wheels.

2020 VW Tiguan Allspace R-Line

Upholding its R-Line legacy, the Tiguan Allspace R-Line has the highest power and torque in its class – 220 ps/350 Nm – generated by a 2-litre TSI turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine. Like the Arteon R-Line, it also has a 7-speed DSG. Besides the 4Motion’s four modes for different conditions, the driver can also customize the powertrain characteristics as well as the chassis to suit personal driving styles and even to stretch each litre of fuel.

2020 VW Tiguan Allspace R-Line

With three rows of seats, there’s the possibility of multiple seat configurations to suit different needs. The second and third row backrests can be folded individually and when both rows are flat, there’s a massive boot volume of 1,775 litres.

2020 VW Tiguan Allspace R-Line

The interior is a combination of sportiness and functionality with connectivity features such as a Digital Cockpit and 9.2-inch Discover Pro infotainment system with 8 speakers. Standard features include 3-zone climate control, cruise control, powered tailgate, LED lighting units front and rear and a tyre pressure monitor.

2020 VW Tiguan Allspace R-Line

Passat R-Line (estimated RM200,000 – RM210,000)
The new Passat R-Line is not available just yet, but Volkswagen dealers will accept bookings from today. Like the Passat Elegance launched earlier this year, the Passat R-Line is also locally assembled. Being assembled locally, like the Arteon and Tiguan, means there is full exemption of the 10% sales tax until the end of the year.

VW Passat R-Line

The accessories developed by the R division for the Passat are sportier front and rear bumpers, side R-Line badge and a lot of chrome trim, plus 19-inch Verona alloy wheels. As for the interior, R-Line trim is in the form of Nappa carbon-style black leather seats, steering wheel and aluminium sports pedals.

VW Passat

For connectivity, the Passat R-Line has Volkswagen’s Discover Pro infotainment system with a 9.2-inch touchscreen. Convenient features include voice control, gesture control, a customizable 3-view split screen and Wireless App-Connect with Apple Car Play.

The Passat R-Line is not just about sportier looks but also delivers strong performance with its 2-litre TSI turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine (190 ps/320Nm) paired with the new and improved 7-speed wet clutch DSG.

The other models in the 2020 range
The Volkswagen range for Malaysia this year presently consists of the Arteon, Passat, Tiguan, Golf 7.5, Vento and Polo, with their respective variants. Prices range from RM221,065 to RM74,800 so there should be a Volkswagen to suit your budget.

2020 VW Tiguan Allspace Highline
There’s also the new Tiguan Allspace Highline with 3 rows of seats with only front-wheel drive and a 1.4-litre TSI engine, priced from RM165,000.

As part of its ‘Volkswagen Cares’ initiative, every new unit comes with 3 years of free scheduled maintenance, a 5-year warranty with no limit on mileage and 5 years complimentary roadside assistance.

Volkswagen Tour
If you are in the Klang Valley, you can get a closer look at the new Volkswagen R-Line models at the Volkswagen Tour which is on at the 1Utama shopping centre in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, until Sunday August 16. There’s also an opportunity to experience the cars at the same location, which is what VPCM encourages the public to do.

Although this year has seen virtual racing or digital motorsports take a big leap in popularity due to the lockdowns that prevented real-world racing to take place, the Toyota GR Velocity Esports Championship has actually been running earlier. In fact, two seasons have been run and next month will see the third season.

Racing events throughout September
The 2020 championship will start off with a series of qualifying rounds, followed by a semi-final and finally, a 4-race format Grand Final. There will be 4 online qualifying rounds (limited to 180 participants per round) which will be run over two consecutive weekends from September 3 and 4 and September 12 and 13.

The virtual track for qualifying will be the 4.5-km Fuji International Speedway in Japan with racers using a GR Supra RZ. UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT), the organisers, expect up to 720 participants this year.

2018 Toyota GR Velocity Esports Championship

Simulator racing
The racers use Thrustmaster T-GT hardware and race on Playstation’s Gran Turismo platform.

The top 20 fastest drivers will then advance to the semi-final to be held on September 26. This will be held at  UMWT’s headquarters complex in Shah Alam, Selangor. The semi-final will involve two individual races held in Japan. The first is a 22-lap race at the Kyoto Driving Park behind the wheel of a TS050 Hybrid prototype sportscar and later, a Dallara Super Formula SF19 around the 5.8-km Suzuka Circuit in an 18-lap battle.

The 10 fastest drivers will enter the final challenge Grand Final on September 27 at the same venue. Besides the Grand Prize of RM20,000, there are cash prizes of RM10,000, RM7,000, RM5,500, RM4,500 for the other 4 overall winners. Cash prizes of between RM4,000 and RM2,000 also await those who finish in 6th to 10th positions. RM500 each will also be given out to those who finish in 11th to 20th positions.

The most lucrative online racing series
Racers will also stand a chance to win additional cash prizes in the form of RM450, RM200 and RM100 awarded to the first, second and third place winners at each of the 4 Grand Final races. This makes the Toyota GR Velocity Esports Championship  one of the most lucrative and rewarding online racing series locally.

Season 3 of the Toyota GR Velocity Esports Championship will also feature a special 10-lap exhibition race involving racers and celebrities who competed in the Toyota Vios Challenge and Toyota GAZOO  Racing Festival. The racing drivers will go participate in a 10-lap race behind the wheel of a  GR Supra Racing Concept racing car at the 4.5-km Fuji International Speedway while celebrities will drive a TS050 Hybrid sportscar in a 17-lap race at the Tokyo Expressway.

Toyota GR Supra Cup Asia

First ever regional championship
The top three racers will also earn the honour of representing Malaysia in the first ever GR Supra GT Cup Asia 2020 regional e-motorsports competition organized by Toyota Motor Asia Pacific in October 2020. The GR Supra GT Cup Asia 2020 will see competitors from Malaysia competing against the best from Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines and India.

“The race must go on, amidst a post-pandemic era and in the new norm. While physical motor racing involving Toyota is not expected to return until the first quarter of 2021, the past 5 months presented UMWT with the perfect opportunity to advance our virtual racing activities and to bring the GAZOO racing spirit and motorsports to the masses,” said Toyota GAZOO Racing Malaysia’s Chief Motorsports Officer, Akio Takeyama.

Interest keeps growing in Malaysia
UMWT is the first and still the only Malaysian car company to be associated with the fast-growing e-sports activities, contributing to the growing interest in online simulator racing in the country. According to Ravindran K., President of UMWT, the number of participants who competed in the Toyota GR Velocity Esports Championship grew to 657 in 2019 from 400 when the series was first introduced in 2018.

Incidentally, 2018 was also the year when the FIA (the world motorsport governing body) recognised simulator racing and certified it as Digital Motor Sport.

“Online racing, particularly the growing interest in Simulator Racing, has exponentially grown, more evidently over the last 5 months, and it has successfully attracted both real-world racers and virtual racers,” Mr. Ravindran said, adding that some 300,000 viewers are expected to tune in to the Toyota GR Velocity Esports Championship live streamed online races this year.

The first Rolls-Royce Ghost reflected a layer of clients who use their Rolls-Royce in a completely unique way. These men and women required a motorcar able to offer an impeccable chauffeur-driven experience as well as a vibrant dynamic personality when they chose to drive it themselves.

In 2009, when the first Ghosts entered the market, this collective of business leaders, founders and entrepreneurs were unanimous in their feedback that the marque had created a product that balanced their requests perfectly.

When these clients were informed that Rolls-Royce would begin developing the second generation of the Ghost – expected to be unveiled before the end of this year – their request was simple: deliver a motorcar that they could use even more. They desired something even more refined to be driven in and even more enjoyable to drive.

2021 Rolls-Royce Ghost

Meeting the challenging brief
To fulfil this challenging brief, the engineering experts at the 114-year old company rejected the use of a pre-existing platform. Instead, they have configured the marque’s proprietary ‘Architecture of Luxury’ aluminium spaceframe chassis to incorporate elements of the brand’s existing model portfolio such as all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering.

At the same time, the structure has been adapted to accommodate significant advances in Rolls-Royce’s hallmark magic carpet ride and dynamic abilities. Naturally, these qualities are expected especially by those who have owned a Rolls-Royce.

“Ghost clients told us that it’s the car in their collection that they’re drawn to the most. They love its uncomplicated versatility. It’s not trying to be a sportscar, it’s not trying to be a grand statement – it’s simply exceptional and exceptionally simple,” said Jonathan Simms, New Ghost Engineering Lead.

2021 Rolls-Royce Ghost

The Planar system
A key development was the Planar system, which is consists of three elements. The system allows new Ghost to anticipate and react to even the most demanding road surface.

The first is an Upper Wishbone Damper unit which is mounted above the front suspension assembly and creates an even more stable and effortless ride. The result of three years of development, this is a world-first technology.

The second is the Flagbearer system, a predictive system which uses cameras to read the road ahead and prepare the suspension system for any changes in road surface. The third is Satellite Aided Transmission, which draws GPS data to pre-select the optimum gear for upcoming corners.

Pushing the architecture further
During the engineering design process, chassis and suspension specialists were tasked with regularly presenting the technical advances they had made to other departments, as well as showcasing how these remarkable developments met the client brief.

“When it came to creating a new Ghost – one that outshines its incredibly capable predecessor – the engineering team had to start from scratch. We pushed our architecture even further and created a car even more dynamic, even more luxurious and, most of all, even more effortlessly useable,” Simms promises.

Following the 2018 launch of Levante Trofeo, the most powerful version of Maserati’s first SUV, the range is now joined by the new Quattroporte and Ghibli Trofeo. The expanded collection highlights Maserati’s all-Italian identity with the colours chosen for the Trofeo collection launch being those of the country’s flag: green for Quattroporte, white for Levante and red for Ghibli.

The striking colours are combined with burnished chrome-work and gloss red trim. The whole Trofeo collection is distinguished by the red details that characterize the bottom profiles of the side air vents and the arrow on the Trident badge on the C-pillars.

580-bhp V8 engine
The heart of Ghibli and Quattroporte Trofeo is the 3.8-litre V8 Twin Turbo with no less than 580 bhp and 730 Nm of torque at peak output. The engine, already available with the  Levante Trofeo, is built at the Ferrari factory to Maserati’s specifications. It has been modified and developed to deliver equally impressive performance on the rear-engine sedans.

2020 Maserati Trofeo

Although completely new for Ghibli, the V8 engine has already been used in the past on Quattroporte GTS, tuned for 523 bhp output. The uprated V8 for the Trofeo versions are in full compliance with fuel efficiency and emissions standards.

Fastest Maserati sedans
The Ghibli and Quattroporte Trofeo are claimed to be the fastest Maserati sedans ever, able to reach a maximum speed of 326 km/h, 24 km/h faster than the Levante Trofeo.

2020 Maserati Trofeo

Like Levante Trofeo, the new Ghibli and Quattroporte Trofeo also incorporate the Integrated Vehicle Control (IVC) system, with a specific set-up for enhanced driving dynamics and greater active safety.

The sedans have the Corsa button that sets the car for an even sportier driving style. Also included is Launch Control, a function that first appeared on Levante Trofeo, to exploit all the engine’s power and produce an authentic Maserati driving experience.

Special stylistic touches
While the unique signature of every Maserati is the sound of its engine, the Trofeo collection adds distinctiveness, thanks to special stylistic touches. These include the front grille with twin vertical bars in Black Piano finish, and the introduction of carbonfibre on the front air duct trims and rear extractor, giving an even more aggressive effect.

There are major changes at the rear of the car, where the light clusters have been completely restyled, with a boomerang-like profile inspired by the 3200 GT and the Alfieri concept car.

For the Ghibli Trofeo, the bonnet has also been restyled, featuring two aggressive air ducts for better cooling, just like on Levante Trofeo.

2020 Maserati Trofeo

The Trofeo characterization continues in the interior, with a new on-board panel that displays an exclusive interface at switch-on, while the headrests bear the Trofeo badge with the name in 3-dimensional relief. The exclusivity also extends to the interior upholstery, in full-grain Pieno Fiore natural leather.

New technologies also appear in MIA (Maserati Intelligent Assistant) while the multimedia screen has upgraded resolution and a larger size.

It used to be that the company name was also a brand name and used with every model the company sold. However, in recent times, especially with the advent of electric vehicles (EVs), some companies are finding that it would be better to create a dedicated sub-brand for such vehicles and give them more prominence.

Hyundai Motor is the latest to do so with the announcement of the IONIQ brand which will be for EVs. Most readers would know that the IONIQ name has already been used by a Hyundai model. The name, which fuses ‘ion’ and ‘unique’ was first introduced in 2016 as ‘Project IONIQ’, a long-term R&D project focused on eco-friendly mobility.

Based on the project, Hyundai introduced a model named IONIQ which was unique in that it could be powered by a choice of three powertrain options – hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid and full electric – within the same bodystyle.

Hyundai IONIQ
The IONIQ was introduced to the Malaysian market in 2016, and is available only with a hybrid powertrain.

Three new models in four years
Mow, the company will re-assign the model name to become a brand name. Over the next four years, the Korean carmaker will introduce a range of numerically named EVs under the new brand, with the even numbers used for sedans and the odd numbers for SUVs. These will start, in early 2021, with the IONIQ 5. In 2022 will come the IONIQ 6 sedan and in early 2024, the IONIQ 7 which will be a large SUV.

The first model, the IONIQ 5, will be a midsize CUV (Compact Utility Vehicle) based on the concept 45 which was displayed at the 2019 Frankfurt Motorshow as a homage to its very first concept car. The IONIQ 5’s designers have taken inspiration from the past and integrated it with cutting-edge parametric pixels, a unique design element that Hyundai designers will continue to incorporate into future IONIQ models.

Hyundai Concept 45 and Prophecy
Concept 45 (above) will be the basis of the IONIQ 5′ design, while the Prophecy concept (below) provides the designers with the starting point for the styling of the IONIQ 6.

2020 Hyundai Prophecy concept

The IONIQ 6 sedan will be based on the company’s latest concept car, the Prophecy, which made its debut 5 months ago. The IONIQ 7 SUV will share the vehicles’ common design theme of ‘Timeless Value’. The vehicles will be inspired by past models but they will be a bridge to the future, says Hyundai.

Hyundai IONIQ models

E-GMP platform
All IONIQ models will sit on an Electric Global Modular Platform, known as ‘E-GMP’, that will have fast charging capability and generous driving range. The EV-dedicated platform will allow Hyundai designers to reimagine the cabin as a ‘smart living space’ with highly adjustable seats, wireless connectivity and unique features such as a glovebox designed as drawers.

The platform paradigm shift will extend into the user interfaces that will be simple, intuitive and ergonomically designed to help occupants feel at ease.

Strategy 2025
The Hyundai Motor Group recently announced that the Group aims to sell 1 million units of battery electric vehicles (BEV) and take 10% share to become a leader in the global EV field by 2025. Under Strategy 2025, Hyundai Motor Company itself aims to become the world’s third-largest automaker of eco-friendly vehicles by 2025, with 560,000 BEV sales in addition to Fuel Cell EV sales.

Hyundai celebrated the launch of the IONIQ brand by turning the London Eye into a giant letter ‘Q’ using electric lights just before the official reopening of the famous attraction. With the otherwise bustling city of London having come to a halt during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, Hyundai is ‘bringing new energy into the city’ by lighting up and turning one of its most iconic sights once again.

In case you missed the news, if you have any outstanding summonses from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) or Land Public Transport Department (now known as APAD instead of SPAD), you can save some money if you settle before the end of this month.

In conjunction with the upcoming Merdeka Day celebrations, the agencies are offering a 70% discount for all summonses during August 2020. This discount is for all compoundable summonses issued by the JPJ and APAD under the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board Act 1987 (Act 334) and Land Public Transport Act 2010(Act 715). Summonses issued by the police are not included in this discount offer.

The discount is offered for speeding offences recorded by AES cameras.

The offences covered include drunk driving, exceeding speed limits as recorded by the AES cameras, and also vehicles which are found to be in a condition that is not roadworthy. Depending on the nature of the offence, the compound fine can be up a maximum of RM300.

If you are blacklisted, this is an opportunity for you to sort the matter out. However, you will need to personally visit a JPJ branch to resolve the matter and then make payment (the discount will still be allowed). For other road-users, payments can be made at JPJ offices or online portals.

JPJ saman summons discount (2)

Note that a summons does not mean you are guilty of the offence. If you read the wording, you will find that it informs you that you have been sighted committing an offence (which will be specified). If you believe you are not guilty, you have a right to challenge the charge in court. However, if you agree that you are guilty, then you just pay the compound fine, saving time for all parties.

Incidentally, in Ipoh, Perak, the city council is also offering motorists a discount on offences related to parking. The discounts range from 30% and 50%.

Mention Cadillac and most people outside the USA will have an image of a big, heavy, fuel-guzzling limousine. That’s what the cars of the 118-year old company looked like for decades, with the ultimate being ‘The Beast’ which is the nickname of the car used by the US President.

Like the other American carmakers, Cadillac was aware of the need to be indifferent to the issue of fuel consumption, especially after the energy crises of the 1970s. But it still had big engines that traditional customers liked, although new technologies helped make them fuel-efficient and new materials and engineering reduced weight.

But there’s a limit to how much an internal combustion engine can be improved, and manufacturers are now switching to electric motors that require no fossil fuel at all. Cadillac is readying for the transition. It has revealed its first all-electric vehicle (EV) as a concept model with the production version expected to go on sale in late 2022,

With range being one of the biggest factors when it comes to selecting an EV, the target is 480 kms or more of range on a full charge. Charging options that fit a variety of preferences include DC fast-charging rates over 150 kW and Level 2 charging rates up to 19 kW.

The Ultium’s NCMA (nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminium) chemistry uses aluminium in the cathode to help reduce the need for rare-earth materials such as cobalt. In fact, GM engineers reduced the cobalt content by more than 70%, compared to current GM batteries.

The advanced battery chemistry is packed in large, flat pouch cells that enable smart module construction to reduce complexity and simplify cooling needs. Additionally, the battery electronics are incorporated directly into the modules, eliminating nearly 90% of the battery pack wiring, compared to GM’s current electric vehicles.

Within the LYRIQ, the Ultium battery system is a structural element of the architecture, integrated in ways that contribute to ride and handling, as well as safety. In fact, the lower centre of gravity and near 50/50 weight distribution enabled by the placement of the battery pack provides benefits to handling.

Additionally, the LYRIQ is driven primarily by the rear wheels, with a performance all-wheel drive option available. The placement of the drive motor at the rear gives an even greater feeling of balance and agility. It also enables the system to channel more torque to the pavement without wheelspin for exhilarating acceleration and greater cornering capability.

Vehicles equipped with performance all-wheel drive go a step further, with a second drive unit placed at the front which allows for a significant amount of tuning flexibility, enhancing vehicle dynamics and performance.

New architecture, new possibilities
Inside, the LYRIQ’s new architecture opens up possibilities in spaciousness and design, encouraging the designers to rethink how to use the space and where to locate various interior elements. The more airy, minimalistic design does more to involve the driver and passengers in the driving experience while offering exceptional functionality when it comes to storage solutions.

The LYRIQ is said to offer Cadillac’s highest level of driver information, infotainment and connectivity integration. A 33-inch diagonal advanced LED display integrates a single, large screen that spans the viewing area for the driver and incorporates driver information details, infotainment controls and camera views.

This new display has the highest pixel density currently available in the automotive industry and can display over one billion colours. That’s 64 times more than any other vehicle in the industry.

A new dual-plane augmented reality-enhanced head-up display employs two planes: a near plane indicating speed, direction and more, and a far plane displaying transparent navigation signals and other important alerts.

Active noise cancellation technology
For the first time, Cadillac will introduce a new road noise cancellation technology, which takes active noise cancellation to the next level by introducing more microphones and accelerometers. With this new system, Cadillac’s performance and audio engineers can target the frequency range of tyre cavity noise, reducing the noise level in the vehicle and allowing for a quieter in-cabin experience.

The LYRIQ builds on the brand’s exclusive partnership with AKG. The objective was to deliver a sound experience that would transport the driver into a recording studio. The result is a 19-speaker AKG Studio audio system that delivers exceptionally crisp and precise sound reproduction.

“Led by LYRIQ, Cadillac will redefine American luxury over the next decade with a new portfolio of transformative EVs,” said Steve Carlisle, Executive Vice-President & President, GM North America. “We will deliver experiences that engage the senses, anticipate desires and enable our customers to go on extraordinary journeys.”
