Edaran Tan Chong Motor Sdn Bhd (ETCM) today introduced a new addition to the Navara model line-up, the Nissan Navara VL Plus, with Nissan Intelligent Mobility (NIM) technology and enhanced safety features.

The new Navara VL Plus is equipped with Intelligent Around View Monitor (I-AVM), a Nissan Intelligent Mobility (NIM) technology which uses 4 cameras to provide a 360° bird’s-eye view of the vehicle for easier navigation in tight spots and tricky parking situations. 7 SRS Airbags (dual front, side and curtain airbags, as well as driver knee airbag) are also included for added protection, while the new Digital Speedometer housed within the Advance Driver-Assist Display offers more driving convenience.

“Imagine a whole new driving experience, moving through life with more excitement, confidence and connection to the world around you. Nissan Intelligent Mobility (NIM) offers that through Intelligent Around View Monitor (I-AVM), which is available on our 3 best-selling models; X-Trail, Serena S-Hybrid and now the Navara”, said Mr Christopher Tan, Sales and Marketing Director of ETCM.

The Navara VL Plus remains unchanged in delivering a dynamic driving performance; with a 2.5 litre turbo intercooler diesel engine that outputs 190 PS and 450 Nm of torque, and fitted with a first-in-class 7-speed automatic transmission with manual mode for an invigorating drive.

Additionally, the Navara is the first Japanese pickup in Malaysia with a Multi-Link Rear Suspension System that offers an unprecedented driving comfort and handling, similar to SUVs. Along with Zero Gravity Inspired Seats, comfort is further enhanced as it eliminates driver fatigue on long journeys. Whether for recreational or business use, the Navara is a reliable double-cab pickup that can accommodate a full payload of one tonne.

When the 2008 Ninja 250R was introduced it was the only model of its kind, offering top-class Ninja styling in a fun and friendly package. It resonated with both new and experienced riders, launching a worldwide movement. In the ten years since its release, the number of full-fairing rivals has increased exponentially, making this one of the most hotly contested categories in the market. How hot? This hot…

Kawasaki has now introduced a new sport model into this highly competitive arena. Clad in completely new Ninja styling, the new Ninja 250 delivers greater performance than its predecessor care of all-new engine and chassis that are more powerful and significantly lighter. Here’s how it compares to its predecessor…

But like the Ninja 250 that came before it, this new Ninja model possesses a lot more than just higher performance than its predecessor.

The new model takes the winning formula that drove the success of the Ninja 250R and its successors, and amplifies it. Not only does the Ninja 250 offer stunning, high-quality looks, its stronger engine performance, light, predictable handling and relaxed, sporty riding position make it both fun and easy to ride. This duality – the ability to offer excitement and ease of riding to wide range of customers – is sure to make the new Ninja 250 a fan favourite once again.

NEW ENGINE: HIGH PERFORMANCE & HIGH CONTROLLABILITY

The Ninja 250’s all-new 249 cm3 engine delivers a balance of performance and controllability.  The new engine offers increased performance at all rpm compared to its predecessor, with good power feeling.  Smooth, predictable response contributes to an easy-to-control engine character.  Thanks to its efficient design, the compact, lightweight engine has a size on par with 250cc engines.

Powerful, Rider-Friendly Parallel Twin
Displacing 249 cm3, the new engine delivers significantly increased performance compared to its predecessor: 28.5 kW†2 for the new Ninja 250 (+5 kW vs the 2017 Ninja 250). The higher performance can largely be credited to the new downdraft intake, which is accompanied by a larger airbox offering increased intake efficiency.  The increased performance is complemented by a rider-friendly character; the smooth response and abundant low-end torque facilitate throttle control for new and experienced riders alike.

Compact, Lightweight & Efficient
Designing the engine from scratch allowed the engine layout to be optimised for size, weight and efficiency.  The new unit is comparable in size to that of the 2013-2017 Ninja 250.  Numerous weight reduction efforts keep weight to a minimum – despite a larger displacement (in the case of the Ninja 400).  A clean design trimmed of any unnecessary items, and a revamped layout enable a slim engine and a cooling system with minimised external piping.

New Assist & Slipper Clutch
More compact clutch (ø139 mm >> ø125 mm) with less rigid operating plates offers a 20% lighter lever pull.  Complementing the extremely light feel at the lever, the new clutch has a wider engagement range, facilitating control.

New Radiator Fan Cover
A cover for the radiator fan directs engine heat away from the rider, contributing to rider comfort.  With the new design (patent pending), hot air is now mostly routed out to the sides (through holes in the fairing).

NEW CHASSIS: LIGHTWEIGHT, STABLE & MANOEUVRABLE

Offering considerable weight savings compared to its predecessor, the new chassis delivers a balance of stability and light, easy manoeuvrability.  Its slim design facilitates both control and ease of riding, making the Ninja 250 an easy choice for both new and experienced riders.

Lightweight Trellis Frame
The Ninja 250 features a trellis frame similar in design to that of the Ninja H2.  Kawasaki’s advanced dynamic rigidity analysis was used to ensure optimum rigidity with light weight.  The engine is rigid-mounted and used as a stressed member.  The new frame design contributes significantly to the bike’s low curb mass.

Swingarm Mounting Plate
Like the Ninja H2, the new Ninja 250 features a Swingarm Mounting Plate.  Allowing the swingarm to be affixed to the rear of the engine contributes to stability and helps with weight savings by eliminating the need for heavy frame cross-members.

Light, Predictable Handling
With both the engine and frame being new, engine placement could also be optimised.  The new chassis has a supersport-style short-wheelbase/long-swingarm design, complemented by a steep caster angle that delivers light, natural handling.  The bike’s light weight also contributes to the easy handling and facilitates manoeuvring when off the bike.

Significantly Lower Weight
The lightweight design of the new engine and frame, plus extensive efforts to minimise weight result in a curb mass of only 164 kg for both the Ninja 250 (8 kg lighter than its predecessor) – weight on par with single-cylinder models.

More Rigid Front Fork
More rigid ø41 mm telescopic fork delivers better suspension action.  The front wheel feels really planted, direction changes are made easily (even when the bike is fairly upright – handy when navigating traffic jams), and overall the suspension offers the plushness of a larger displacement bike.

Largest Brake Disc in Class
Measuring ø310 mm (the same disc size used on the Ninja ZX-14R), the Ninja 250’s semi-floating front disc offers sure stopping power.  A rigid new front brake master cylinder helps eliminate ineffective (idle) stroke, contributing to controllability, while carefully selected brake hose dimensions and material contribute to brake touch.  ABS models feature the latest ABS unit from Nissin, the most compact and lightweight available.

Relaxed, Sporty Riding Position
Relaxed rider triangle accommodates a wide range of rider sizes and riding situations.  Compared to some other models (whose somewhat extreme riding position compromises comfort), the elevated handle position and slightly foot-forward footpeg position put the rider in a position to control the bike while also offering rider comfort.

Easy Reach to the Ground
While seat height is 785 mm (when radial tyres are fitted), the slim design of both the seat (30 mm narrower) and the rear of the engine gives riders an unobstructed line for their feet to reach the ground.

Superb Ride Comfort & Excellent Wind Protection
Low vibration and seats with thick cushioning and low-rebound urethane contribute to superb ride comfort.  The Ninja 250’s larger-volume bodywork also offers great wind protection, further contributing to ride comfort.

ENGINE : SHARP NEW NINJA STYLING: HIGH-CLASS & FUTURISTIC

Head-turning looks have always been a forte of Ninja models, regardless of displacement.  The new Ninja 250 boasts futuristic new Ninja styling inspired by the mighty Ninja H2.  The large-volume bodywork attracts attention, and gives the impression of a larger machine.  This impression is reinforced by the high-class design and superb fit and finish, which are comparable to bikes from a larger-displacement class.

Flagship-Inspired Styling Elements
Influence from the Ninja H2 is evident in the chin-spoilers below the front cowl and in the design of the tail cowl.

Twin LED Headlamps
In addition to contributing to the Ninja 250’s sharper looks, slim LED headlamps (each featuring low and high beams, as well as a LED position lamp) are highly visible and offer significantly increased brightness.

High-Grade Cockpit
The Ninja 250 is equipped with the same instrument cluster as the Ninja 650, contributing to the high-grade feel of the tidy cockpit.  The sophisticated instrument design features a large analogue tachometer flanked by warning lamps on one side, and a gear position indicator and multi-function LCD screen on the other.

While it gears-up for the impending launch of its first-ever SUV, Proton decided to take a breather from the feverish planning and invite the media to find out for themselves just how fuel-efficient Proton cars are. Sep Irran the Editor of MotoMalaya.net files this report…

 The GIST…

  • The question of how far you can travel in a Proton with just one tank of fuel is a very interesting inquisition.
  • For this, Proton organised the 2018 Proton 1-Tank Adventure where Proton users will try to find out.
  • We were invited for Round 3 in Sabah where we drove the Proton Saga around 420km from Kota Kinabalu to Kundasang and back.

There are a lot of factors when it comes to buying the perfect car. From performance, design, specifications, and many more, the majority of the public will look into one very important aspect; fuel economy. For Proton, they’re currently organising a very special event just to show how fuel-efficient their cars really are when driving in the real world.

Dubbed the 2018 Proton 1-Tank Adventure, a series of fuel economy drives are held within a span of two days. Five rounds are currently on-going and we were fortunate enough to be invited for the recently-concluded third leg in East Malaysia. Starting from Kota Kinabalu all the way up to Kundasang and back, the challenge covers around 420km with a variety of road conditions.

From single lane mountain roads and twisties up to 2,000metres above sea level, our two-day trip on the 24 to 25 July 2018 was presented with a variety of challenging driving scenarios from unpaved roads, steep hill climbs, potential landslides, and unpredictable traffic congestions. Our goal was to cover all of this with only one tank of fuel.

There were 16 teams who took part in the third round of the 2018 Proton 1-Tank Adventure and I was teamed up with Adrian Chia from Autobuzz and we set out for one of the most memorable journeys of our lives. As part of the motoring media family here in Malaysia, we have no issues driving fast and furious but our biggest challenge is driving economically. We have no doubt that it can be done but we tried our very best to see how good the Proton Saga really is when it comes to fuel economy.

Three different Proton models took parts in the 2018 Proton 1-Tank Adventure which are the Saga, Iriz, and Persona. We took off from the Proton showroom in Inanam and made our way to five different checkpoints which were spread out within 260km.

We filled up our fuel tanks to the brim at the nearby Petronas before having the fuel cap sealed off by the event organisers before setting off to some iconic places like the Tuaran Clock Tower, Serinsim Sub-Station Kinabalu Park, Sabah Tea plantation, and finally, the Nabalu Kundasang Lodge which sits at around 1,800metres above sea level.

Both Adrian and I took turns in driving as economically as we can and with the Proton Saga 1.3 CVT, it was quite easy to do so thanks to its Eco Drive Assist indicator sitting neatly in the meter panel. We knew that the average fuel consumption for the Saga sits between 5.6 litres to 6.17 litres for every 100km but since it’s a challenge, we try to achieve the best number possible.

Upon stopping at our hotel in Kundasang, we noticed that our Proton Saga only used around half of the fuel based on the fuel indicator. With a fuel tank capacity of 40 litres, we calculated that we managed to reach around 7.69 litres/100km which was reasonable considering all twisting roads and hill climbs getting up to Kundasang.

The night continued with dinner and a very interesting talk on Proton’s latest safety specifications built into their latest models which are a combination of Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Traction Control (TC), and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC). We had a chance to test what these are all about in Day 2 of our drive back to Kota Kinabalu.

The next morning, we took off with half a tank of fuel left and were told to take the route filled with multiple check points (cows, lorries, heavy traffic, landslides, and unpaved roads included!) at the very beautiful Kuala Abai Beach and Likas Stadium. This is where we took part in the Dynamic Driving Activity where we tested the handling of both the Proton Persona and Iriz on a series of tests involving slaloms, emergency braking, braking avoidance, and lane changes.

Embedded with the DNA of Lotus, we experienced first-hand on how beautiful these Protons handled in tricky driving conditions. This is where we could understand more on the cars’ safety features and dynamic handling available in reasonably-priced vehicles, which were surprisingly excellent.

For our final stop, we headed back to the Petronas petrol station located in Inanam where we first filled up in Day 1 to determined how much fuel each of us have used in the past couple of days. All 16 cars made it back after 420km of driving up, down, and all around Kota Kinabalu with some space fuel left in the tank.

Back at the Proton showroom, the winners were announced and RM24,000 worth of prizes were given out the most economical drivers of Round 3 of the 2018 Proton 1-Tank Adventure. The winners clocked in some very impressive numbers which can be seen, below:

Best fuel consumption results:

  • Proton Saga 1.3 CVT – 5.46 litres/100km (22.947 litres/420km)
  • Proton Iriz 1.3 CVT – 5.76 litres/100km (24.197 litres/420km)
  • Proton Persona 1.6 CVT – 5.83 litres/100km (24.48 litres/420km)

With these outstanding figures, the Saga theoretically can travel up to 736km, 694km for the Iriz, and 686km for the Persona! With that being said, we did cover a series of challenging routes up and down Kundasang and around Mount Kinabalu.

Fortunately for us, we will be joining the final round of the 2018 Proton 1-Tank Adventure in August where finalists of each leg will make their one-tank journey from Johor Bahru, Johor all the way up to Seberang Perai, Penang! Will we be able to make it? Stay tuned to Piston.my for more exciting updates!

Porsche has unveiled the new Macan in Shanghai. The compact SUV has been a great success since its launch in 2014, and has now been significantly enhanced in terms of its design, comfort, connectivity and driving dynamics, allowing the Macan to remain the sporty flagship in its segment. The new Macan stays true to the Porsche design DNA with a three-dimensional LED tail light strip.

LED technology also features in the headlights as standard. The most striking innovations inside the vehicle include the 11-inch touchscreen of the new Porsche Communication Management (PCM), re-designed and re-positioned air vents and the GT sports steering wheel familiar from the 911. Here’s the debut video…

LED headlights and new tail light strip as standard…
Thanks to a number of conscious changes to the exterior, the new Macan now has an even sportier and more modern look. Numerous details reflect the DNA of the iconic 911 sports car and the 918 Spyder. In particular, the topic of lighting plays a key role: The new Macan is equipped with headlights featuring LED technology as standard. This high-quality lighting system featuring modules with a three-dimensional design can be further optimised if desired.

The Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS) can be used to adaptively control the light distribution. The front end of the Macan has been meticulously re-worked so that it now appears even wider, while the comprehensive overhaul at the rear builds on the sleek design of the predecessor model. The three-part, three-dimensional LED light strip represents another typical Porsche design element at the rear. The four-point design of the brake lights also reflects the brand’s identity.

New options: GT sports steering wheel and ioniser…
The link to the 911 is consolidated in the interior of the new Macan with the optional GT sports steering wheel. The mode switch plus Sport Response Button integrated into the steering wheel is also showcased in the Macan as part of the optional Sports Chrono Package. Porsche has extended the list of comfort options to include a heated windscreen and an ioniser to improve the air quality in the interior. New exterior colours such as “Miami Blue”, “Mamba Green Metallic”, “Dolomite Silver Metallic” and “Crayon” combined with new interior packages ensure that the Macan is now more customisable than ever before.

11-inch touchscreen display…
Through the new Porsche Communication Management (PCM), the Macan offers numerous digital functions. Above the typical Porsche rising centre console, a full-HD touchscreen enlarged from seven to eleven inches has been incorporated seamlessly into the newly designed instrument panel. Just like in the Panamera and Cayenne, the user interface on the infotainment system can be customised using predefined tiles. The air vents have also been re-designed and are now positioned below the central screen.

Optimised chassis with new tyres and wheels…
Thanks to its optimised chassis, the new Macan is able to consolidate its exceptional status as a sports car in the compact SUV segment. Fine-tuning of the chassis delivers enhanced neutrality while maintaining stability and improving comfort. Although unusual for the SUV segment, the Macan still features mixed tyres with different widths on the front and rear axles.

As with Porsche sports cars, this arrangement enables the driver to take full advantage of the intelligent, all-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM) when it comes to driving dynamics. Newly developed tyres with improved performance characteristics enable even better lateral dynamics for enhanced driving pleasure, while the new 20- and 21-inch wheels also offer greater scope to customise the design.

A model of success: more than 350,000 Macan deliveries since 2014…
The Macan is a genuine success story. The combination of typical Porsche performance on any terrain coupled with a high degree of everyday practicality impressed customers right from the start: Since 2014, Porsche has delivered more than 350,000 units. With over 100,000 deliveries to date, the model is especially popular in the Chinese market where Porsche unveiled the redesigned compact SUV. The model presented in Shanghai will be offered exclusively in the Chinese market. Other models and markets will follow during the course of the year.

After a successful Formula 4 South East Asia (SEA) season, Petron Malaysia has renewed its commitment to fuel the 2018 run of the highly anticipated regional event by returning as its official fuel and engine oil partner.

“The last two seasons demonstrated the superior qualities of Blaze 100 Euro 4M and Blaze Racing Fully Synthetic Engine Oil in providing Formula cars the much-needed power and efficient engine responsiveness. We are happy that our high-octane Blaze 100 and Blaze Racing Engine Oil proved to be the best match for Formula 4 vehicles,” said Faridah Ali, Head of Retail Petron Malaysia.

A leader in fuels technology and innovation, Petron made its mark by launching the first and only 100 RON premium gasoline in the Malaysian market in January 2016. In 2017, Petron started its foray in motorsports as the official fuel and engine oil partner of the F4 SEA Championship.

Promoted by the Asian Autosport Action (AAA) group, F4 SEA is designed to transition 15-19 year old karters into formula racing, giving them the foundation they need to get into GT racing or other formula racing. It focuses on driver experience and development by ensuring a level playing field in a one make FIA single-operator Championship using FIA-F4 homologated race cars and engines.

Here’s some action from the 2017 Formula 4 season…

The F4 SEA, being the first step for drivers to reach Formula 1, has so far helped young homegrown drivers such as Nazim Azman, Adam Khalid and newcomer Muizz Musyaffa to step up their game and facilitate their development in professional motorsports. Formula 4 drivers go at it hard and fast with no quarter asked or given, so here’s some ‘blistering’ action from the 2016 Formula 4 Season…

“The championship has grown from strength to strength and continuous to attract a substantial amount of exposure and interest amongst racing fans. We are thrilled with the way the championship has progressed. This season’s sponsorship will further cement our foothold in the development of motorsports in the region, making our brand synonymous with this FIA certified championship,” Faridah Ali concluded.

The 2018 F4 SEA calendar will kick off this July at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia. The race will continue in India and Thailand. It will then return to Malaysia for season finale. Check out how a F4 car fares against the mighty Porsche 911 Turbo S!

In recognising young talents in motorsports in the region, Petron was also the presenter of the MERITUS Award Gala recently held in Bukit Jalil. The MERITUS Awards was organised to celebrate the best drivers in the 2017 FIA F4 SEA. Muizz Musyaffa and Nazim Azman brought cheers to fans when they claimed the 3rd Rookie Champion and the Best Drive awards, respectively. Following a promising performance last season, Muizz was awarded the SIC-Scholarship to compete in the forthcoming F4 SEA season.

Customers who have made bookings for the Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid and the Tucson (*applicable only for the Turbo and Elegance variant) can be rest assured that as long as the booking is made by or on 31 August 2018, they need not worry about paying the sales and service tax (SST), even if their vehicle is delivered after 1st September 2018. Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) said it would honour the selling price of these two vehicles with zero-rated GST while stocks last for a limited time only.

According to Mr Dennis Ho, Managing Director of Sime Darby Motors (Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan), the sales of Hyundai vehicles have increased during the tax holiday period, especially for the IONIQ Hybrid and Tucson models as customers take the opportunity to enjoy greater savings. “With our stock for the IONIQ Hybrid and *Tucson fast depleting, we will need time to replenish the stock in order to fulfill customers’ demands. It is only fair that HSDM absorbs the SST for orders placed by 31 August 2018, even for vehicles delivered after the SST takes effect,” said Ho. HSDM is inviting the public to visit Hyundai’s authorised showrooms to learn about the ongoing promotions.

The **current selling price for the IONIQ and Tucson models with zero-rated GST are as follows:

  • IONIQ Hybrid HEV – RM94,788
  • IONIQ Hybrid HEV Plus – RM109,988
  • Tucson Elegance – RM119,188
  • Tucson Turbo – RM137,488

**Price indicated is only applicable to Peninsular Malaysia and excludes insurance.

HSDM offers a five-year or 300,000km (whichever comes first) warranty on all its new passenger vehicles. In addition, the IONIQ is entitled to 60,000km free service while the Tucson is entitled to 50,000km free service, both with a three-year validity. A 24-hour road assist service is also available now for new and existing Hyundai vehicles.
