Proton has achieved its best January sales performance since 2013 by selling 12,882 units (domestic and export). This marks a 1.3% increase compared to December 2023 and a significant 10.3% increase compared to January of the previous year. With this strong start, Proton comfortably retains the second position in the sales table, and its estimated market share for the month is 19.5%, showing a 3.3% increase from the previous month.

The Total-Industry-Volume for January is estimated to be 66,134 units, reflecting a decline of 15.6% compared to December. This drop is attributed to the traditional year-end push for higher vehicle sales in December 2023.

The newly launched Proton S70 has made a notable impact, with 1,442 units delivered in January and over 8,000 bookings. The model has received a positive response from customers and has already made its way to an export market in Brunei, with 15 units delivered ahead of its official launch this month.

Approximately 30,000 taxis across the country have reportedly been left abandoned as drivers claim to have been forced out of business due to the rise of e-hailing services, as reported by local daily Utusan Malaysia. The publication suggests that the number of taxis in operation has decreased from around 120,000 to just 40,000 since the advent of e-hailing.

While the source of the statistics was not cited, Gabungan Teksi Malaysia (GTSM), a taxi drivers’ group, was quoted by Utusan Malaysia, attributing the decline to the significant difference in fares between traditional taxis and e-hailing services. Kamarudin Hussain, the chairman of GTSM, pointed out that consumers are drawn to the lower fares offered by e-hailing services, placing blame on the government for not regulating e-hailing rates.

Kamarudin expressed concern that the lack of control over e-hailing rates has led to a price war among e-hailing companies, resulting in compromised fares. He argued that when rates become extremely affordable, passengers naturally prefer e-hailing services over taxis.

Starting from February 23, TNG Digital Sdn Bhd (TNGD) will implement a one per cent fee on all Touch ‘n Go eWallet (TNG eWallet) top-ups made using credit cards. Transactions via debit cards and DuitNow will continue to remain free of charge.

The decision, according to TNGD’s Chief Executive Officer, Alan Ni, is aimed at addressing excessive withdrawals from credit cards to bank accounts and reducing the significant costs associated with credit card transactions borne by TNGD.

Ni emphasised that TNG eWallet users have the option to choose DuitNow for top-ups, which involves fund transfers between banks, providing a balance between convenience, security, and the long-term cost sustainability of the company. He encouraged users to utilise DuitNow or debit cards for top-ups, as both options are free of charge.

A police officer holding the rank of sergeant is currently under investigation for the possession of RM3,753 in cash during a roadblock (SJR) near a location in Selangor on Sunday.

The examination was conducted by the Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) of Bukit Aman at the site of the mentioned roadblock, as confirmed by Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan.

The examination took place in the early hours around 2:30 am, targeting several traffic personnel engaged in Operation Alcohol. During the investigation, one of the traffic officers was discovered with a sum of RM3,313 in cash, and further inspection of a vehicle revealed an additional RM440 in cash.

In response to the incident, Datuk Hussein Omar Khan stated that a disciplinary investigation has been initiated. The objective is to identify any potential elements of corruption or violations of prescribed procedures.

He further declared that all personnel involved in this investigation would be suspended from the enforcement unit until the investigation is concluded.

In line with the recent Budget 2024 announcement, the Malaysian government is set to implement a service tax increase from the current 6% to 8% starting March 1. While certain categories like F&B and telecommunications are exempt, consumers, especially motorists, are bracing for increased costs across various sectors.

One noticeable impact will be on vehicle servicing and repairs, as these do not fall under the exempted categories. Come March 1, vehicle maintenance costs are expected to rise. It’s important to note that the service tax in this context applies solely to labour charges and not to the cost of parts.

Beyond vehicle maintenance, motor insurance is another area where Malaysians can expect to pay more due to the 2% increase in service tax. Although not widely highlighted in the news, all business-to-consumer general insurance or takaful, excluding medical insurance or medical takaful, will be subject to the service tax hike.

In a recent press conference discussing the Proton S70, Proton’s CEO, En Roslan Abdullah, confirmed a significant development – the exploration of an R3 performance version for the Proton S70.

En Roslan emphasised that the potential R3 variant would be more than just a visual enhancement, distancing itself from the aesthetics-focused Proton X50 R3 edition. The company is focused on delivering a comprehensive performance package rather than a cosmetic makeover.

He also said that the company, absent from the S1K race for several years due to the lack of a suitable racing car, sees potential in the Proton S70 to re-enter competitive racing. The S70 R3, if realised, might follow the legacy of Proton’s earlier performance models, especially the Satria GTi R3 and the Satria Neo R3, known for its tuned engines, lightweight materials, and performance enhancements.

Commenting on the Proton S70 R3 version, En Roslan said, “We are working on an R3 S70 model and are looking at this model to return to the S1K. This will however take some time as we will need to work with a number of stakeholders to ensure its viability.”

“We have stayed away from the S1K race for a few years now because we did not have a car that we could go racing with. And we did not want to compete just for the sake of competing, but with the S70, that might just change,” he continued.

The Proton S70, with its turbocharged 1.5-litre 3-cylinder engine puts out 150PS and 226Nm of torque which is transferred to the front wheels through a 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission. As we found out during a recent test drive, it also offers impressive handling, which makes it a potential platform for a race winning car. Look out for our review from the recent drive to Penang.

Proton’s strategic move to explore R3 performance enhancements for the S70 aligns with its commitment to delivering vehicles that not only look impressive but also offer a thrilling and dynamic driving experience. The potential rebirth of the R3 division as a performance enhancer with the Proton S70 R3 has the potential to reignite Proton’s presence in the racing scene as well as offering more exciting road going Protons, as before.

The Satria Neo R3, unveiled in 2008, was the last fire-breathing Proton R3. It featured a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre engine, sportier body kit, 17-inch wheels, lowered suspension, improved braking, Recaro seats, and a MOMO steering wheel.

It may not be far-fetched to think that Proton enthusiasts can anticipate a similar performance boost for the S70 R3, making it a long-awaited addition to the brand’s performance-oriented lineup.

If the plans materialise and R3 is revived as a more than an aesthetics enhancer, enthusiasts can potentially also expect upgrades such as a full exhaust kit, performance coils, and interior enhancements such as bucket seats and more. The future for Proton and R3 seems exciting.

The controversy surrounding police officers allegedly accepting RM100 fines from British tourists in Perak takes a new turn as a video emerges depicting a similar incident in Langkawi. The two-and-a-half-minute footage captures a couple, presumed to be European tourists, riding a motorcycle without helmets on the resort island.

In the video, the police apprehend the couple, citing the absence of helmets. However, the face of the officer involved is not visible as the recording discreetly captures the officer suggesting a monetary settlement to avoid a traffic ticket.

District Police Chief of Langkawi, Assistant Commissioner Shariman Ashari, confirmed that the video, uploaded to YouTube on November 10, is under investigation. Preliminary findings reveal that the foreign tourists opted to pay RM100 to evade a police station visit and subsequent fines for not wearing helmets.
