Volkswagen Group Malaysia (VGM) has unveiled plans to establish Malaysia as an export hub for the Volkswagen brand, according to Tengku Zafrul Aziz, the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry. Following discussions between the ministry and VGM officials, the carmaker has indicated its intention to manufacture both electric vehicles and conventional models within the country.

Previously, Volkswagen models were imported into Malaysia, but now certain models are being assembled locally. Notably, the Touareg model is being assembled in Malaysia for the first time outside of Europe. The locally assembled flagship SUV comes with the recommended retail price of RM469,990.

Tengku Zafrul Aziz expressed confidence that this collaboration would bolster Malaysia’s position in the regional automotive sector, signalling a significant step forward for the country’s automotive industry and positioning Malaysia as a key player in the manufacturing and export of Volkswagen vehicles.

Proton received two awards for its latest models at the Allianz DSF.my Vehicle Of The Year (VOTY) 2024 awards ceremony. The Proton S70 Flagship X, the company’s market-leading C-segment sedan, won the Sedan of The Year category, despite being on sale for less than six months. Additionally, the smart #1 Brabus, distributed by Proton subsidiary PRO-NET, won the Electric Crossover of The Year award.

A project for testing a QR code immigration clearance system in Johor is scheduled to commence in June, as announced by Baharuddin Tahir, the state Immigration director. According to The Star, the pilot project will be conducted at both the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQs).

Initially, the plan is to launch the pilot project in June, although there is a possibility of it being delayed depending on the readiness of the infrastructure and system developed for the QR code clearance.

The QR code immigration clearance will initially be implemented for factory buses travelling through BSI and KSAB. If the pilot project proceeds smoothly, it will be expanded to include other modes of transportation. Johor will be the first state in Malaysia to implement such a QR code immigration clearance system.

PRO-NET has announced the expansion of its charging infrastructure network in response to the increasing demand for New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in Malaysia. With a commitment to accelerating adoption and facilitating convenient travel for EV owners, our organisation is dedicated to providing seamless access to fast and efficient charging solutions across the country.

Since the introduction of the Proton DC Charger at its headquarters last October, PRO-NET has been proactively expanding the charging infrastructure at its Proton Edar Dealerships. In collaboration with partner Gentari, we have successfully deployed six (6) DC Chargers, totalling twelve (12) charging bays, each equipped with two nozzles. This rollout includes a variety of charger types, including 50 kW, 60 kW, 100 kW, and 120 kW DC chargers.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has unveiled the latest variant of the popular C-Class: the Mercedes-Benz C 350e Plug-in Hybrid. Assembled at the production plant in Pekan, this model seamlessly combines electric power with traditional fuel for enhanced efficiency.

Under the hood, the C 350e Plug-in Hybrid features a 2.0-litre engine delivering 204hp at 6,100 rpm, coupled with a torque of 320Nm from 2,000 to 4,000 rpm. In addition, an electric motor with a rated output of 127hp and a torque of 440Nm supplements the combustion engine, resulting in a maximum rated power system output of 313hp and a peak torque of 550Nm. With an electric range of up to 117km (WLTP), the C 350 e prioritises sustainable mobility.

The car’s high-voltage (HV) battery, with an energy content of 25.4 kWh, supports various journeys and features an internal cooling system for optimal performance. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.1 seconds and reaching a top speed of 245km/h, the C 350e offers agility and versatility.

Externally, the C-Class boasts AMG Line styling with a distinctive Mercedes-Benz pattern grille and 18-inch AMG 5-spoke light-alloy wheels. The Night Package adds sporty design elements in high-gloss black, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal.

 

Inside, the AMG Line interior features metal structure trim elements, a multifunction sports steering wheel in nappa leather, and Artico man-made leather upholstery. The cabin is equipped with a high-resolution 12.3-inch LCD screen, an 11.9-inch touchscreen central display, and the latest generation of MBUX multimedia system for a digital and intelligent driving experience.

Safety features include a 360° camera, Blind Spot Assist, Active Brake Assist, and Guard 360° Vehicle protection. The driving experience is enhanced with an energy recovery function, route-based operating strategy, and selectable driving modes.

Mercedes-Benz Financial offers the Agility+ Plan tailored to the C 350e, providing benefits such as lower monthly instalments, flexible end-of-agreement options, and a guaranteed future value. Additionally, customers enjoy an additional 6 times service packages and up to RM3,800 Star Protect (Motor Insurance) support.

The Mercedes-Benz C 350e is priced at RM338,888 (including 10% ST) for Peninsular Malaysia, inclusive of a 6-year / 100,000 km high-voltage battery warranty.

In a move that could reshape Malaysia’s petrol station landscape, Shell is reportedly in discussions with Saudi Arabia’s state-owned Saudi Aramco regarding the potential sale of its petrol station business in the country. The deal, estimated to be worth as much as US$1 billion (RM4.74 billion), is said to be in advanced stages, according to industry insiders familiar with the matter.

While both Shell and Saudi Aramco have declined to comment on the ongoing talks, sources highlight the significance of Malaysia to Shell, where it owns approximately 950 petrol stations, making it the second-largest network in the country after Petronas.

The discussions, which reportedly began in late 2023, are expected to result in a finalised deal in the coming months, with estimated deal sizes ranging from RM4 billion to RM5 billion.

The Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued a statement regarding BJAK Sdn Bhd (BJAK) and its unauthorised road tax renewal transaction services. According to JPJ, BJAK’s advertisement on its website and social media platforms regarding road tax renewal services is false.

JPJ emphasised that BJAK has never received approval from the Malaysian Ministry of Transport (MOT) or JPJ to provide road tax renewal services to the public. Several complaints have been received by JPJ from the public regarding BJAK’s services, including cases where road tax renewal was initiated through BJAK’s website but the validity period of the road tax was not updated.

BJAK advertises online transaction services for Motor Vehicle License (LKM) or road tax, including a free road tax program. However, JPJ clarified that there is no system integration between JPJ’s system (MySIKAP) and the system used by BJAK. Additionally, complaints have been received regarding additional charges imposed by BJAK during road tax renewal transactions.

Proton continues to show robust growth in sales, posting a 17.1% increase in April 2024 compared to the same month in 2023, with 11,025 units sold domestically and for export. This growth trend has also extended to the first four months of 2024, with total sales reaching 50,175 units, surpassing the 49,702 units sold during the same period in 2023.

The Malaysian automotive market as a whole has seen growth, with an estimated total industry volume (TIV) of 59,100 units for the same period and a cumulative total of 261,345 units for the year.

Proton has maintained its position as the second-highest seller in the overall national automotive sales ranking, with an estimated market share of 18.7% in April and a year-to-date market share forecasted at 19.2%.

Export sales have played a significant role in Proton’s performance, experiencing a remarkable 38.5% increase from 603 units to 835 units year-to-date in April.

Notably, Proton’s models have performed well in their respective segments. The Proton X50 regained its position as the top-selling B-segment SUV in Malaysia, with 1,642 units sold in April. The Proton S70 has led sales for C-segment sedans since the beginning of the year, with 1,635 units sold in April and a cumulative total of 7,463 units for 2024.

The latest addition to Proton’s lineup, featuring a youthful design, seamless connectivity, and advanced safety features, has garnered significant interest among Malaysian buyers, contributing to the brand’s overall success.

The Proton Saga remains Proton’s best-selling model, with 5,031 units sold in April and year-to-date sales up by 8.8% to 23,278 units. Other models, including the Proton X70, Proton Persona, Proton X90, and Proton Iriz, have also contributed to Proton’s sales volume.

In terms of exports, the Proton Saga leads the pack with 427 units sold year-to-date, followed by the Proton X50 and Proton S70. Overall, export sales have seen substantial growth, reflecting Proton’s expanding presence in international markets.

Chery Auto Malaysia is taking proactive steps to address an incident involving the axle of certain Omoda 5 models. After conducting an in-depth internal investigation, the company has decided to recall a batch of 600 Omoda 5 units. Working closely with the Ministry of Transport (MOT), Chery Auto Malaysia aims to rectify all affected vehicles to ensure the highest standards of safety.

Lee Wen Hsiang, Vice President of Chery Auto Malaysia, emphasised the company’s commitment to providing safe and reliable transportation solutions. He stated that Chery Auto Malaysia voluntarily briefed the MOT on the product inspection status and the root cause of the Omoda 5 axle incident.
