The B66 Jalan Batang Kali-Genting Highlands route, closed since December 2022 due to a devastating landslide that claimed 31 lives, will reopen to the public today.

The Hulu Selangor District’s Public Works Department (JKR) has announced that the route will be accessible to all road users starting at 3PM.

The Ministry of Public Works initially closed the road in December 2022, projecting a one-year closure to facilitate slope and road repair work at the landslide site. In April, Deputy Minister of Public Works Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan reported that the repair project, costing approximately RM19 million, had reached 86% completion, with remaining tasks including the installation of fence rails and wall construction.

The reopening marks a significant milestone in the recovery efforts following the tragic incident, ensuring the safety and accessibility of the route for all travellers.

It has come to a point where to address the tragic issue of children being left unattended in vehicles, the Transport Ministry is developing a new system called MyCINTA, announced Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

The MyCINTA system, spearheaded by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), aims to prevent such incidents through advanced tracking and alerting technology. According to Minister Loke, the system is undergoing a refinement process to enhance its hardware and programming capabilities, with a target completion date set for 2024-2025.

System Development and Testing

“The target for 2024-2025 in relation to the MyCINTA system is to complete the design refinement process to increase the system’s capabilities in terms of hardware and programming,” stated Loke, according to The Star. The refinement phase is crucial for ensuring the system’s effectiveness and reliability.

The issue of diesel subsidies is currently under review by the Malaysian government, with various appeals being considered for inclusion in the Subsidised Diesel Control System (SKDS). Here’s an overview of the situation:

  • Review Process: Appeals from various parties, including tow truck operators, will be presented to the Cabinet for consideration after being reviewed.
  • Government Stance: Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali stated that the government is aware of the appeals and is analysing them. No decisions have been made yet.
  • Eligibility Criteria: The basic principle for eligibility under the SKDS is that sectors or types of transport involved in the delivery of important goods used daily by large communities are prioritised.
  • Tow Truck Operators: The Malaysia Tow Truck and Car Transport Association (IMTTCC) has reported that over 1,000 tow truck operators are seeking inclusion in the SKDS. Since the targeting of diesel subsidies began on June 10, their operating costs have doubled due to the increase in diesel prices from RM2.15 to RM3.35 per litre.
  • Government Response: The government is open to appeals, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, ensuring that all appeals will be given the best consideration.

The high demand for driving instructors in Malaysia has led to a consistent shortage of trainers, causing delays for candidates waiting to learn to drive. This issue is particularly acute in the Klang Valley, where candidates often have to wait three to five months for their turn, as reported by NST.

Instructor Quotas

The Road Transport Department (RTD) has set quotas for instructors, allowing one instructor per car or lorry candidate and one instructor for up to five motorcycle candidates.

Shortage of Instructors

Many driving schools are struggling to meet demand due to these quotas. For instance, Rawang Driving Institutes currently has 54 instructors but needs five more.

The Malaysian government is set to enforce the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) for foreign vehicles, particularly from Singapore, starting October 1. Transport Minister Anthony Loke has emphasised the government’s firm stance on this decision, highlighting the importance of compliance with Malaysian road laws for all foreign drivers.

Key Points of the VEP Implementation:

  1. Strict Enforcement:
    • The VEP will be mandatory from October 1, with no changes or delays to this enforcement date.
    • Foreign drivers, especially from Singapore, must comply with Malaysian road regulations.
  2. Compliance Expectations:
    • Singaporean drivers entering Malaysia are expected to adhere to the same legal standards that Malaysian drivers must follow when entering Singapore.
    • Foreign drivers must pay any fines for traffic violations before leaving Malaysia.
  3. Tracking and Enforcement:
    • Currently, without the VEP, there is no effective method to track foreign vehicles and enforce traffic laws.
    • The VEP will enable Malaysian authorities to monitor foreign vehicles and ensure payment of fines for any traffic violations.
  4. Entry Points for VEP Enforcement:
    • Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) at Johor Causeway.
    • Sultan Abu Bakar Building at Malaysia-Singapore Second Link.
