Chery Auto Malaysia Sdn Bhd has marked a significant milestone along its growth journey in Malaysia with the launch of the Chery Corporate Malaysia Factory in Shah Alam. The facility will be the first in the ASEAN region to produce the highly anticipated premium off-road SUV, the Jaecoo J7.

The factory launch was commemorated with the first ever Jaecoo J7 All-Wheel Drive (AWD) premium off-road SUV rolling off its production line, witnessed by Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Malaysia, Yang Berhormat Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, and China’s Minister of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), Dr Jin Zhuanglong.

A tour of the facility showcased the cutting-edge technology and stringent quality control processes applied to every Jaecoo vehicle assembled. The Jaecoo J7 AWD and Two-Wheel Drive (2WD) variants will be the inaugural models assembled at the facility in Shah Alam. The set-up of the factory has resulted in the creation of 500 new jobs with the potential to grow further in line with market demands.

Strategically located in the Shah Alam industrial zone, the Chery Corporate Malaysia Factory is in close proximity to local manufacturers who are critical to its supply chain. The facility is also geographically located close to Malaysia’s busiest port and the second largest in Southeast Asia, which primes the automaker’s readiness to export to the ASEAN region in the future.

To date, Chery, as a whole, is responsible for the creation of over 1,000 jobs in Malaysia through its local operations. The brand also has a network of 100 sales and service centres across the nation.

In line with its brand ecology, “New Energy, New Eco, New Era,” Jaecoo teased the market with a taste of its future EV portfolio recently, previewing the Tiggo 8 Pro Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), Jaecoo J7 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and the Jaecoo J6 full-fledged Electric Vehicle (EV) at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024 in May.

The new production facility launch will be closely followed by the official launch of Jaecoo’s premium off-road SUV, the J7, in Malaysia, which will be celebrated over three days, from 19 to 21 July. The Jaecoo J7 is powered by a 1.6 TGDI engine that produces 194hp and 290Nm of torque. Power is sent to the wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Careless and reckless attitudes among express bus drivers are putting passengers’ safety at risk, particularly during festive seasons, according to Stien Van Lutam, the director of the Kedah Road Transport Department (RTD).

According to NST, during an undercover operation conducted by the RTD yesterday, two express bus drivers were caught violating regulations, including using mobile phones while driving. One of the drivers, a 61-year-old, was transporting 30 passengers from Alor Star to Kuala Lumpur.

“The driver was caught using his mobile phone near Taman Wira in Mergong, Alor Star, at 8:45 AM,” Van Lutam reported. “Later, at 9:06 AM, he pulled over at an undesignated location to pick up parcels and passengers at Km43.6 of the North-South Expressway (Plus).”

The driver received two compounds issued by an undercover RTD enforcement officer as part of the Hari Raya Aidiladha Operation 2024. For using his mobile phone, he was fined RM300, and for stopping at an undesignated location, he received an RM150 fine.

Van Lutam highlighted the worrying trend of express bus drivers exhibiting careless and reckless behaviour, which poses a significant risk to passenger safety. “Whenever drivers fail to show competency, they put passengers at risk of accidents, including potentially fatal ones,” he said.

In response to these issues, the RTD is conducting proactive inspections at two main express bus terminals during the Hari Raya Aidiladha festive season to enhance the safety, quality, and reliability of express buses.

Plans for a new SMART Tunnel traversing Sections 51 and 51A, Federal Highway Route 2, and the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) have been announced, with an estimated cost of RM350 million. This ambitious project aims to mitigate flood risks and reduce surface-level traffic congestion in Petaling Jaya.

Wan Agyl, the former head of policy and planning at the now-defunct Land Public Transport Commission, highlighted the effectiveness of the SMART Tunnel’s flood mitigation system, which diverts stormwater into designated channels and reservoirs. This system has successfully reduced flooding in key areas of Kuala Lumpur and is expected to do the same for Petaling Jaya.

“The SMART Tunnel’s design has proven effective in Kuala Lumpur, where it has successfully reduced flooding in key areas,” Wan Agyl said, according to FMT.

The implementation of the Subsidised Diesel Control System (SKDS) programme has received positive feedback from school and express bus operators in Malaysia, who credit the fleet card for helping them maintain current fare levels without imposing additional costs on users.

Benefits of SKDS Programme

According to FMT, Amali Munif Rahmat, President of the Federation of School Bus Associations Malaysia, emphasised that the SKDS programme’s monthly diesel quota of 1,800 litres at RM1.88 per litre has effectively managed operational costs for school bus operators. This subsidy has enabled them to stabilise fares for the time being, alleviating financial strain amidst the recent diesel price hike to RM3.35 per litre in the peninsula.

“We will not increase fares at this time but will maintain the current rates,” Amali assured, highlighting the adequacy of the quota for sustaining their operations. He also mentioned that additional quotas could be requested if needed, demonstrating flexibility in response to future operational demands.
