In a move toward a more sustainable and futuristic automotive landscape, Toyota has unveiled the 2024 Mirai, the latest iteration of its groundbreaking Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV). With an impressive range, new features, and enhanced safety technologies, the second-generation Mirai is set to redefine the standards for hydrogen-powered luxury.

One of the standout features of the 2024 Mirai is its extended driving range. The Mirai XLE grade boasts an EPA-estimated range of 646km, a notable improvement that caters to the growing demand for extended-range FCEVs. Beyond its extended range, the Mirai introduces a fresh Elemental Silver exterior colour and Beyond Zero badging, underlining Toyota’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and embracing a carbon-neutral future.

The inclusion of Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 further enhances the safety profile of the Mirai, making it a comprehensive choice for drivers prioritising advanced safety technologies.

At the heart of the Mirai’s allure is its “plug-less” electric vehicle operation. Instead of relying on traditional charging methods, the Mirai utilises a fuel cell system that generates electricity onboard from hydrogen. This process results in the emission of only water, aligning with Toyota’s commitment to creating environmentally friendly vehicles. The Mirai incorporates cutting-edge technologies, including an electrostatic air cleaner, a water-cooled oil cooler, and a lithium-ion battery, ensuring efficient and sustainable performance.

Built on the premium Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) GA-L platform, the Mirai delivers a mid-size luxury-sport sedan experience. The GA-L platform, coupled with a sophisticated multilink suspension, guarantees exceptional handling agility and a remarkably smooth, quiet ride. The Mirai’s aerodynamic design, featuring a 0.29 coefficient of drag, not only contributes to efficiency but also enhances overall performance.

Inside the Mirai’s cabin, advanced technology and comfort seamlessly intertwine. Both Mirai grades feature a standard 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen display, offering an intuitive interface for drivers and passengers alike. Connectivity options abound, with dual Bluetooth phone connectivity, wireless charging, and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Mirai caters to comfort with features like SoftTex-trimmed and heated seats, a Colour Head Up Display (HUD), and a digital rear-view mirror with HomeLink on the Limited grade.

Safety takes center stage in the 2024 Mirai, now equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. This comprehensive safety suite includes features such as Pre-Collision System, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, and more. Additional safety elements include Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Traffic Jam Assist, ensuring a secure driving experience.

Mirai owners can enjoy an array of Connected Services, including Safety Connect, Service Connect, and Remote Connect. Extended benefits such as ToyotaCare, complimentary hydrogen fuel, dedicated 24/7 phone support, and an eight-year/160,934km FCEV warranty underline Toyota’s commitment to customer satisfaction and the longevity of their FCEV investment.

The pricing for the Mirai XLE is $50,190 (RM237,273) and the Mirai Limited at $67,155 (RM317,475).

Maserati has announced the debut of the electric version of its MC20 sportscar, named the MC20 Folgore, as part of the brand’s intensified push towards electrification. Originally slated for a 2022 release, the electric variant will now hit the market in 2025. Despite the delay, Maserati aims to make a significant impact with the sporty EV, showcasing its commitment to sustainable and high-performance electric vehicles.

While images of the MC20 Folgore are yet to be released, it is expected to closely resemble its petrol-powered counterpart with distinctive differences like a charging port and the absence of exhaust at the rear. Aerodynamic tweaks may also be incorporated to enhance efficiency.

MC20 Notte

The primary transformation lies in the powertrain, featuring a tri-motor setup capable of producing over 700hp. This electric powerhouse is anticipated to accelerate the car from 0- 100km/h in just two seconds, a notable improvement over the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre Nettuno V-6 in the current MC20. Maserati envisions adding only around 99kg to the car’s weight despite the increased potency.

The MC20 Folgore is part of Maserati’s broader electrification strategy, which includes the upcoming GranCabrio Folgore set to be released later this year. Additionally, a new electric crossover model is slated for 2027, with an electric version of the Quattroporte expected in 2028.

Closer to home, back in October of last year, Maserati introduced the MC20 Cielo to the Malaysian market. The MC20 Cielo made its global debut in 2022 and is priced at RM1,228,000.00 before local duties and taxes, customisation options, and insurance.

Mazda has revealed the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata roadster, marking the ninth year of production for the current ND generation. The latest model, known as the “ND3” generation, comes with notable mechanical and design upgrades, maintaining its reputation as a reliable and spirited roadster.

Under the hood, all models continue to be powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine generating 181hp and 205Nm of torque. The Sport and Club trims come with a six-speed manual transmission, while the Grand Touring trims offer a six-speed automatic as an option. The 2024 model year introduces enhancements to the electric power-assisted steering system, including a revised rack for reduced friction and improved on-centre feeling during cornering.

In terms of design, subtle tweaks include new LED daytime running lights in the headlight units, updated LED taillights, and fresh multi-spoke wheel designs. The colour palette now features Snowflake White Pearl, Zircon Sand Metallic, and a new Aero Gray shade, each available for an additional $450 (RM2,127) charge, along with Machine Grey Metallic or Soul Red Crystal Metallic for $595 (RM2,812).

Mechanical upgrades include a new asymmetric conical clutch limited-slip differential for Club and Grand Touring trims, offering improved stability during cornering. The Club models also introduce a “DSC-Track” mode, elevating the dynamic stability control system’s threshold.

Inside, the ND3 Miata boasts additional centre console padding, an enlarged 8.8-inch infotainment screen with touch functionality for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a new Amazon Alexa voice-activated assistant for hands-free commands. The gauge cluster receives a revision for improved readability.

A notable option for Club models is the $4,800 (RM22,692) Brembo BBS Recaro package, which includes a gloss black aero kit, Brembo brakes, gunmetal grey 17-inch BBS forged wheels, and heated Recaro sport seats.

The 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata lineup sees a modest price increase, with the base Sport trim starting at $30,150 (RM142,534) and the fully-equipped RF Club trim reaching $41,375 (RM195,600), before options. Mazda anticipates the updated model year to be available sometime in March.

Toyota has revealed two distinctive high-performance versions of the new GR Yaris, developed in collaboration with Toyota Gazoo Racing World Rally Team (TGR-WRT) champion drivers Sébastien Ogier and Kalle Rovanperä. The exclusive models made their debut on the first day of Rallye-Monte Carlo, marking the commencement of the 2024 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC).

Inspired by concept versions showcased at the 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon, these special editions reflect the personal input of the champion drivers, who have contributed to the development process. The initiative stems from Toyota Motor Corporation Chairman and Master Driver Akio Toyoda’s desire to express gratitude to the drivers who play a pivotal role in refining and evolving Toyota cars through rallying.

Both editions feature reprogrammed settings, replacing the “Gravel” and “Track” modes found in the standard GR Yaris, to align with each driver’s personal preferences for handling and performance. Additionally, each model boasts distinctive new exterior and interior styling features.

Powered by the latest iteration of the GR Yaris’ 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 280hp and 390Nm of torque, matched to a six-speed intelligent manual transmission (6iMT), these exclusive editions promise an exhilarating driving experience.

Ogier Edition:

The Ogier Edition introduces two new AWD control modes: Morizo and Seb. The Morizo mode, developed by Akio Toyoda himself, focuses on delivering consistent race times, while Seb mode, developed by Sébastien Ogier, emphasizes a connected driving experience with torque distribution for controlled drifting. The bodywork features a dedicated Matt Stealth Grey paint finish, French national flag details, WRC commemorative stickers, and distinctive BBS alloy wheels. Inside, it includes WRC victory commemoration plaque, contrast stitching honouring the French national colors, and other bespoke details.

Rovanperä Edition:

The Rovanperä Edition features a unique Donut Mode designed for drifting and performing tire-smoking donuts, along with Kalle Mode that ensures linear handling characteristics. The exterior boasts a unique three-tone paint finish and WRC victory stickers, with BBS alloy wheels and a CFRP variable wing rear spoiler. The cabin incorporates trim and upholstery matching Finland’s national colors, a plaque commemorating TGR’s WRC victory, and other personalised touches.

Both the Ogier and Rovanperä Editions will have limited production numbers, with further details about ordering and sales in European markets to be announced at a later date by national distributors. The exclusive models aim to celebrate the spirit of rallying and the collaboration between championship-winning drivers and Toyota’s commitment to performance excellence.

In a dramatic turn of events, Tesla witnessed a staggering 12% plunge in its stock value on Thursday, January 25, following CEO Elon Musk’s cautionary statements about an anticipated slowdown in sales growth for the electric vehicle (EV) giant. Musk’s remarks, delivered on Wednesday, included a warning that growth would be “notably lower” as Tesla shifts focus towards a more affordable next-generation electric vehicle slated for production at its Texas factory in the latter half of 2025.

While the promise of a cost-effective EV has the potential to boost deliveries in the future, Musk acknowledged the challenges in ramping up production due to the integration of cutting-edge technologies into the new model.

Tesla’s stock decline marked its most significant intraday percentage loss in over a year, resulting in a staggering loss of $80 billion in market value on Thursday alone. For the month, the company’s market capitalisation saw a substantial dip of approximately $210 billion.

The impact of Tesla’s decline reverberated through the EV sector, affecting shares of other electric vehicle manufacturers such as Rivian Automotive Inc, Lucid Group, and Fisker, which experienced drops between 4.7% and 8.8%.

In a highly anticipated move, MG enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the unveiling of the third-generation MG3 at the upcoming Geneva International Motor Show on February 26, 2024. The glimpses already shared have ignited conversations among brand loyalists, creating a buzz of excitement leading up to the official reveal next month.

The design of the MG3 takes cues from MG’s more upscale models, notably the MG Cyberster sports car, evident in the sleek, swept-back headlights and streamlined bodywork. The front end of the MG3 exudes aggression with a sharp nose and intricate bonnet. A departure from tradition, the absence of a traditional grille is compensated by a bumper featuring a large intake, flanked by aerodynamic elements that enhance its sporty appeal. The rear showcases horizontal taillights and a dynamic bumper design, completing the contemporary aesthetic.

Inside, the MG3 is expected to undergo a modern revamp, potentially featuring a sizable 10.25-inch infotainment system reminiscent of the MG4.

Under the hood, the 2024 MG3 is poised to feature a hybrid powertrain, marrying a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 2.1kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor, resulting in a robust total output of 174hp. This hybrid setup not only offers an eco-friendly alternative but also aligns with MG’s commitment to providing affordable vehicles.

For the entry-level models, a relatively milder 89kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is expected to power the MG3, catering to a diverse range of consumers with varying performance preferences.

In a milestone development a decade after its inception, the Porsche Macan is set to embark on its second model generation, this time in an all-electric incarnation. The latest Macan 4 and Macan Turbo models aim to meet the diverse needs of Porsche enthusiasts seeking an SUV, combining progressive design, iconic Porsche performance, extended range and heightened everyday practicality.

Porsche’s commitment to cutting-edge technology is evident in the exclusive use of the latest generation of permanently-excited PSM electric motors on both the front and rear axles. This not only ensures outstanding efficiency but also facilitates precise reproducibility of power output. The electric prowess of these models is exemplified by their impressive numbers – the Macan 4, when combined with Launch Control, delivers up to 408PS of over-boost power, while the Macan Turbo reaches an astounding 639PS. Torque figures are equally impressive at 650 and 1,130Nm, respectively, translating into exceptional driving performance. The Macan 4 accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 5.2 seconds, while the Macan Turbo achieves this feat in just 3.3 seconds, with top speeds of 220km/h and 260km/h, respectively.

Key to the electric prowess is a lithium-ion battery with a gross capacity of 100kWh, utilising Porsche’s newly developed Premium Platform Electric (PPE) with an 800-volt architecture. This innovation enables rapid charging capabilities, with a DC charging output of up to 270 kW, allowing the battery to reach 80% charge in approximately 21 minutes. The Macan also introduces an Integrated Power Box (IPB), enhancing efficiency, reducing weight, and optimising space.

With a longer wheelbase at 2,893mm which is 86mm longer than the previous model, shorter overhangs, and up to 22-inch wheels, the Macan exudes a dynamic and dominant presence. The distinctive headlights, divided into two parts, and the frameless doors contribute to the sleek and sporty design.

Porsche combines its design DNA with advanced aerodynamics through Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA), resulting in a drag coefficient of 0.25. This, coupled with features like an adaptive rear spoiler and active cooling flaps, makes the Macan one of the most streamlined SUVs on the market, positively impacting range and power consumption.

Beyond performance and design, the new Macan prioritises practicality. Electrification has led to increased luggage space, with the rear seat bench offering up to 540 liters in cargo mode. The ‘frunk,’ a second luggage compartment under the bonnet, adds an additional 84 liters. Fold down the rear seat backrest, and the rear luggage compartment capacity increases to an impressive 1,348 liters. The Macan also boasts a maximum towing capacity of 2,000kg.

Inside, the Macan features the latest-generation display and operating concept with up to three screens, including a 12.6-inch curved-design instrument cluster and a 10.9-inch central display. For the first time, the Porsche Driver Experience also includes a head-up display with augmented reality technology. Virtual elements such as navigation arrows are visually integrated seamlessly into the real world. The image appears to the driver at a distance of 10 metres and corresponds to the size of an 87-inch display.

The new Golf models are expected to be available for order in the coming weeks, allowing customers to experience the evolution of this iconic model. As Volkswagen continues to push the boundaries of innovation, the enhanced Golf series pays homage to its rich history while embracing the future of automotive technology.

Hyundai and Kia have introduced an innovative technology called the Active Air Skirt (AAS) to optimise the efficiency of their electric vehicles (EVs). Focused on minimising aerodynamic resistance during high-speed driving, AAS aims to enhance the driving range and stability of battery-powered cars.

AAS operates by strategically managing the airflow entering through the lower part of the bumper. It adjusts turbulence around the vehicle wheels based on variable settings corresponding to the vehicle’s speed during high-speed driving. The system remains concealed during normal operation but becomes active at speeds exceeding 80km/h, precisely targeting aerodynamic resistance surpassing rolling resistance. AAS reverts to its stowed position at around 69km/h to avoid unnecessary operation within specific speed ranges.

Unlike fully concealing the entire front, AAS selectively covers only the front part of the tires. This tailored approach is designed to be more effective in improving aerodynamic performance, especially on the flat platform floor of the E-GMP platform. Additionally, the partial coverage contributes to increased downforce, enhancing vehicle traction and high-speed stability.

AAS is engineered to operate at speeds exceeding 199km/h, utilising rubber material on the lower part for durability and protection against external objects. Tests conducted with the Genesis GV60 showed a reduction in the drag coefficient (Cd) by 0.008, translating to a 2.8 percent improvement in drag. This improvement is estimated to provide an additional range enhancement of approximately 5km.
