Despite minimal mechanical changes, the new model introduces notable enhancements, particularly in the Premium Edition T-spec and Track Edition variants. These models inherit high-performance hardware from the Nismo Special Edition, including weight-balanced piston rings, connecting rods, and crankshafts. Additionally, buyers of these models are treated to exclusive features such as an aluminium plaque displaying the builder’s name and a gold-coloured plate showcasing the chassis number.

In response to consumer preferences, Nissan has introduced a new interior trim option, dubbed Blue Heaven, for the Premium Edition variant, adding a touch of luxury to the driving experience. The pricing for the 2025 GT-R varies across the lineup, with the Premium Edition priced at around 15,587,000 yen (around RM493,489), the Pure Edition starting at 14,443,000 yen (around RM457,270), and the top-tier Nismo Special Edition commanding a hefty price tag of 30,613,000 yen (around RM969,344).

Despite the anticipation surrounding the release, Nissan has issued a cautionary note regarding production limitations, hinting at the possibility of demand outstripping supply and resulting in order refusals. Furthermore, rumours circulating in the automotive community, fuelled by reports from Japanese publication Mag-X, suggest that 2025 could mark the final year of production for the R35 GT-R.

According to these reports, Nissan plans to assemble only 1,500 units of the JDM-spec GT-R for the 2025 model year, with a limited quantity of 300 units allocated for the high-performance Nismo derivative. The decision to discontinue the GT-R is attributed to potential challenges in sourcing certain parts in the future, as indicated by Nissan’s communication with its dealers.

The impending discontinuation of the R35 GT-R marks the end of an era for the iconic model, which has enjoyed a remarkable production run since its inception in December 2007. With its development dating back to 2000, the GT-R has undergone several evolutions over the years, culminating in the current model. However, Nissan has hinted at the possibility of a new chapter with concepts like the Hyper Force concept unveiled at last year’s Japan Mobility Show, hinting at the potential for an all-electric GT-R in the future, expected to materialise by the end of the decade.

Expanding its lineup of sporty GTX models, Volkswagen introduces the new ID.3 GTX and ID.7 GTX Tourer, marking a significant step in offering captivating electric mobility experiences. These dynamic models boast individual exterior designs, unique light signatures, sporty interior details, and powerful performance drives, building upon the success of the GTX label introduced in 2021.

ID.3 GTX

The ID.3 GTX will be available in two variants, with the top-of-the-line ID.3 GTX Performance offering snappy, compact sports car performance with 322hp and 545Nm of torque and the standard one with 282hp and 545Nm of torque. It delivers snappy acceleration akin to the iconic Golf GTI Clubsport.

The ID.3 GTX features a distinctive exterior design with GTX-specific elements, including a new front bumper, high-gloss black body elements, and 20-inch Skagen alloy wheels. Inside, premium sports seats with red decorative stitching and a GTX-specific multifunction steering wheel elevate the sporty character.

ID.7 GTX Tourer

Introduced shortly after the ID.7 Tourer, the ID.7 GTX Tourer represents the pinnacle of the lineup with its powerful performance and spacious interior. With a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system delivering 335hp, it combines the spaciousness of a large estate with sports car performance.

The ID.7 GTX Tourer features a distinctive front bumper with honeycomb grille, GTX-specific light graphics, and high-gloss black body elements. Inside, individualised seats with GTX lettering, red piping, and a GTX-specific multifunction steering wheel create a refined ambiance. Additionally, the Ioniq 5 N incorporates a larger 84.0-kWh battery pack, providing extended range and endurance for spirited driving.

Toyota’s CEO, Ted Ogawa, has expressed a conservative outlook regarding the penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) in the US market by 2030. Despite targets set by the EPA, Toyota aims to leverage its position as a hybrid advocate rather than heavily investing in battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

Ogawa emphasised Toyota’s commitment to aligning with customer demand, which currently leans towards various forms of electrification, predominantly hybrids with internal combustion engines. Toyota’s strategy revolves around meeting this demand while maintaining its hybrid-centric approach.

Toyota’s investment in a $13.9 million battery complex in North Carolina underscores its commitment to hybrid and EV production in North America. The company has poured approximately $17 billion into its US manufacturing operations since 2021, with a particular focus on hybrid production.

While the EPA’s 2030 regulations push for over half of new cars to be BEVs, Toyota’s plan targets only 30%. Ogawa acknowledges the regulatory gap and hints at potential credit purchases to meet compliance while prioritizing customer demand over regulatory pressures.

Despite being a top-selling automaker, Toyota’s EV sales lag behind competitors like Tesla. Ogawa admits the company’s technological gap in battery technology but asserts active efforts to catch up, emphasising not only product development but also creating a supportive ecosystem for BEVs, including charging infrastructure and energy management solutions.

Toyota’s strategy in the evolving EV market reflects a cautious yet adaptive approach, prioritising customer demand and leveraging its expertise in hybrid technology. While the company faces challenges in meeting regulatory targets and competing with established EV manufacturers, its investments and commitment to innovation signal a proactive stance in navigating the transition towards electrification.

The Audi A3, a staple in the automotive market since 1996, is back with an updated version for the 2025 model year. However, it comes with a drawback: a plethora of in-car subscriptions that might irk potential buyers.

At first glance, the new A3 closely resembles its predecessor. Notable changes include the adoption of Audi’s latest hexagonal Singleframe grille design, larger air intakes on the bumper, a prominently placed Audi logo, and updated LED headlights with customisable daytime lighting signatures. The rear bumper, inspired by the RS3, features new LED taillights, a black accent piece, and a mesh insert at the base.

Inside, the A3 offers familiar features such as the 10.1-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. However, Audi has introduced a new system of in-car subscriptions for basic functionalities like high-beam assist, dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, and smartphone integration. Access to the app store is only granted with the upgrade to the MMI navigation system, from which Audi prompts users to subscribe to additional features like adaptive cruise control or Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for varying durations. Alternatively, users can opt to purchase these features permanently, although specific pricing details are undisclosed.

It’s important to note that this subscription model applies to the European-spec A3.

Visually, the cabin retains much of its predecessor’s design, albeit with subtle updates. The gear shifter is now slimmer and seamlessly integrated into the centre console, new fabric inserts adorn the door panels, and decorative cabin lighting offers an extensive range of 30 colour options.

Under the hood, the European-spec base Audi A3 features a 1.5-litre four-cylinder mild-hybrid engine producing 148hp, available with either a seven-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. Additionally, a 35 TDI diesel variant with the same power output and a plug-in hybrid model are slated for release later in the year.

Exclusive to Europe is the A3 Allstreet trim, designed to resemble a crossover with a matte black grille, front and rear grooves resembling skid plates, and plastic trim around the wheel wells. The Allstreet sits 1.2 inches higher than the standard A3, providing a softer ride. Standard equipment includes 17-inch wheels, with 18- and 19-inch options available.

Both the Allstreet and the standard A3 Sportback offer 380 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, expandable to 1,200 litres with the rear seats folded flat. An electric tailgate is offered as an optional extra.

The Sportback starts at €35,650 (around RM182,432), with the sedan variant costing an additional €800 (RM4,093). The A3 Allstreet is priced at €37,450 (around RM191,640).

Mercedes-AMG continues to push the boundaries of performance and innovation with the introduction of the new E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ Saloon and Estate, showcasing the brand’s commitment to electrification and driving dynamics.

Under the hood, these plug-in hybrid models boast a formidable combination of a 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine and a 120-kW electric motor integrated into the AMG SpeedShift TCT 9G transmission. The exterior design of the E 53 Hybrid exudes sporty elegance, featuring AMG-specific design elements such as illuminated radiator trim, wider front fenders, and a distinctive front apron with powerful air inlets. The dynamic profile is accentuated by sleek surfaces and AMG-specific side skirts, while the rear is characterised by LED taillights and an AMG spoiler lip (saloon) or rear apron (estate).

Inside the cabin, it offers a blend of luxury and technology, the usual Mercedes design language. Standard features include an illuminated trim in grey open-pore ash wood with an AMG logo, while the optional MBUX Superscreen with passenger monitor enhances the driving experience with AMG-specific displays and functions.

Driving dynamics are further enhanced by the newly developed AMG Ride Control suspension with adaptive damping adjustment, ensuring a balance of comfort and sportiness. The AMG high-performance sports brake system provides excellent stopping power, complemented by the electromechanical brake booster for efficient energy recuperation.

Available with the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package, the E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ offers additional technical and visual enhancements, including an AMG performance steering wheel, larger high-performance composite brake system, electronically controlled rear axle locking differential, and dynamic engine mounts.

For those seeking an extra surge of power, the “Attack Mode” unleashes up to 160hp of additional power at the push of a button, reminiscent of the push-to-pass function utilised in Porsche’s 99X racing cars competing in the Electric ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

Underneath the hood, Porsche engineers have revamped the Taycan model line, boosting the overall system power. A new rear-axle motor ensures even more dynamic performance compared to its predecessors. Equipped with a more powerful pulse inverter, both models command an impressive 777hp, surging to a staggering 1,019hp with Launch Control or up to 1,092hp for two seconds according to peak power measurements.

Acceleration is blisteringly quick, with the Taycan Turbo GT sprinting from zero to 100km/h in just 2.3 seconds, while its Weissach package counterpart does it in 2.2 seconds. While specifics about the final model remain elusive, considering the significant visual refresh the 2024 GT-R received just a year ago – with updated front and rear fascias – major overhauls for the 2025 version seem improbable. Perhaps minor aerodynamic tweaks or adjustments to trim levels may be in the cards, but a complete redesign appears unlikely, especially for a model destined to bow out after a limited production run of 1,500 units.

Should the reports hold and 2025 indeed mark the swan song for the R35 GT-R, enthusiasts can anticipate commemorative touches adorning the sports car, such as special badges or decals.

Under the hood, the regular variant is expected to retain the familiar 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 engine from the 2024 model, delivering 565hp and 632Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the GT-R Nismo variant could receive a power bump to 600hp and 651Nm of torque.

European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP), a leading automotive safety organisation, shares these concerns, particularly regarding touchscreen controls. Euro NCAP Director of Strategic Development, Matthew Avery, emphasised the risks associated with the overuse of touchscreens, noting that they require drivers to divert their attention from the road, increasing the likelihood of distraction-related accidents.
