With a new M35i performance model for 2024, BMW is cranking up the heat on the little X1 crossover. Even though it isn’t a full X1 M, this treatment adds more than just M emblems and adds a more potent engine, better brakes, standard adaptive dampers, and sporty external additions.

Upgraded Exterior

M light-alloy wheels with a twin-spoke design and a 19-inch diameter complete its custom chassis specification. Tyres on the standard light-alloy wheels are 20 mm wider than those on the outgoing model. Sport tyres and 20-inch M light-alloy wheels with a distinctive twin-spoke design are both available as options.

It also features a front apron with particularly large air intakes ensuring the engine, transmission and brakes can continue to work within their optimum temperature windows at all times.

When fully completed at the end of next year or early in 2025, the 275.8 km West Coast Coastal Highway and Malaysian Federal Route 5 (FR5) are anticipated to carry at least 300,000 vehicles per day.

The North-South Motorway (PLUS), which serves 1.8 million users, might potentially shift as little as 20% of the traffic flow, easing congestion there, particularly in the northern half during the holiday season.

Furthermore, since May 2019, the alignment involving Sections 5, 8, 9, and 10 has been open in Bandar Bukit Raja, Hutan Melintang, Lekir, and Changkat Chermin in Perak. This has resulted in a 60% increase in traffic flow this year.

The BMW with its XM Label Red luxury SUV didn’t fare well in the 101st Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The 738 horsepower BMW XM crashed as it was trying to break the Pikes Peak record for the quickest production SUV. Fortunately, Matt Mullins, the driver, was unharmed.

However, because there was very little coverage of the on-track antics, we have no idea what happened. However, we do know that the XM returned on the back of a truck looking like a wreck a few minutes after it had left.

A BMW spokesperson said “unfortunately, our hopes for a record run with the BMW XM today ended with a race incident. Driver Matt Mullins is disappointed but unhurt. The focus now is on re-preparing the vehicle and planning for another record attempt later this year.”

Growing up in the olden days was the best thing that happened to us car enthusiasts. Why? Because we actually got to enjoy the good old days when cars were made with engines and as little electronics as possible.

This writer remembers the days when he used to sit with his grandpa and watch him work on his 1960s Volkswagen Beetle. What a beauty it was. Then we got to witness the bug on-screen known as ‘Herbie’. So, it’s safe to say that the rear-engine bug had its golden days.

Later on, Volkswagen introduced the ‘New Beetle’ which was a more modernised model but still kept the original Beetle design language. Unlike the previous models, this one had its engine in the front. Overall, it felt like a failed attempt in recreating what was already perfect.
