Toyota’s CEO, Ted Ogawa, has expressed a conservative outlook regarding the penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) in the US market by 2030. Despite targets set by the EPA, Toyota aims to leverage its position as a hybrid advocate rather than heavily investing in battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

Ogawa emphasised Toyota’s commitment to aligning with customer demand, which currently leans towards various forms of electrification, predominantly hybrids with internal combustion engines. Toyota’s strategy revolves around meeting this demand while maintaining its hybrid-centric approach.

Toyota’s investment in a $13.9 million battery complex in North Carolina underscores its commitment to hybrid and EV production in North America. The company has poured approximately $17 billion into its US manufacturing operations since 2021, with a particular focus on hybrid production.

While the EPA’s 2030 regulations push for over half of new cars to be BEVs, Toyota’s plan targets only 30%. Ogawa acknowledges the regulatory gap and hints at potential credit purchases to meet compliance while prioritizing customer demand over regulatory pressures.

Despite being a top-selling automaker, Toyota’s EV sales lag behind competitors like Tesla. Ogawa admits the company’s technological gap in battery technology but asserts active efforts to catch up, emphasising not only product development but also creating a supportive ecosystem for BEVs, including charging infrastructure and energy management solutions.

Toyota’s strategy in the evolving EV market reflects a cautious yet adaptive approach, prioritising customer demand and leveraging its expertise in hybrid technology. While the company faces challenges in meeting regulatory targets and competing with established EV manufacturers, its investments and commitment to innovation signal a proactive stance in navigating the transition towards electrification.

The Audi A3, a staple in the automotive market since 1996, is back with an updated version for the 2025 model year. However, it comes with a drawback: a plethora of in-car subscriptions that might irk potential buyers.

At first glance, the new A3 closely resembles its predecessor. Notable changes include the adoption of Audi’s latest hexagonal Singleframe grille design, larger air intakes on the bumper, a prominently placed Audi logo, and updated LED headlights with customisable daytime lighting signatures. The rear bumper, inspired by the RS3, features new LED taillights, a black accent piece, and a mesh insert at the base.

Inside, the A3 offers familiar features such as the 10.1-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. However, Audi has introduced a new system of in-car subscriptions for basic functionalities like high-beam assist, dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, and smartphone integration. Access to the app store is only granted with the upgrade to the MMI navigation system, from which Audi prompts users to subscribe to additional features like adaptive cruise control or Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for varying durations. Alternatively, users can opt to purchase these features permanently, although specific pricing details are undisclosed.

It’s important to note that this subscription model applies to the European-spec A3.

Visually, the cabin retains much of its predecessor’s design, albeit with subtle updates. The gear shifter is now slimmer and seamlessly integrated into the centre console, new fabric inserts adorn the door panels, and decorative cabin lighting offers an extensive range of 30 colour options.

Under the hood, the European-spec base Audi A3 features a 1.5-litre four-cylinder mild-hybrid engine producing 148hp, available with either a seven-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. Additionally, a 35 TDI diesel variant with the same power output and a plug-in hybrid model are slated for release later in the year.

Exclusive to Europe is the A3 Allstreet trim, designed to resemble a crossover with a matte black grille, front and rear grooves resembling skid plates, and plastic trim around the wheel wells. The Allstreet sits 1.2 inches higher than the standard A3, providing a softer ride. Standard equipment includes 17-inch wheels, with 18- and 19-inch options available.

Both the Allstreet and the standard A3 Sportback offer 380 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, expandable to 1,200 litres with the rear seats folded flat. An electric tailgate is offered as an optional extra.

The Sportback starts at €35,650 (around RM182,432), with the sedan variant costing an additional €800 (RM4,093). The A3 Allstreet is priced at €37,450 (around RM191,640).

Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) today officially introduced the all-new Touareg R-Line to the Malaysian market. The locally assembled flagship SUV comes with the recommended retail price of RM469,990, inclusive of the Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP).

The Touareg, now in its third generation, is Volkswagen’s first SUV when it made its global preview in 2002. Over 1.14 million units have been sold worldwide, and till today remains a popular model at the top of Volkswagen’s SUV range.

The Touareg is powered by a proven 3.0-litre V6 TSI. The output of 340PS and up to 450Nm of torque is delivered to all wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission and intelligent 4MOTION system. The system then allows the driver to select a mode that adjusts drivetrain characteristics to suit driving or terrain conditions.

New front and rear design adds to the Touareg’s commanding stance. At the front, the radiator grille, headlights and the front apron have been given a new look. The design of the rear end is also sharper with its continuous horizontal
LED strip for the taillight clusters. The rear Volkswagen logo is now illuminated in red, a first as this was previously only available in markets such as China and the US.

The R-Line trims combine stylish elegance with sporty dynamism, and includes 20-inch Braga alloy wheels, enhanced chrome detailing, and the ‘R’ insignia at the doors and emblazoned on the front grille.

The Touareg redefines lighting technology with the new IQ LIGHT HD MATRIX headlights, one of the best lighting systems in the world. This highly intelligent lighting system of more than 38,000 interactive micro-LEDs illuminates the road more precisely than ever before. Furthermore, entry and exit puddle lighting illuminates the ground by the doors with the Volkswagen logo.

Also included is Night Vision – a first for a Volkswagen here in Malaysia – which provides the driver with a better view of the road at night. The system uses an infrared sensor in the camera to detect thermal signatures from humans or animals up to 130 metres ahead to keep the driver aware of potential collision.

Riding on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo platform, the appointments in the spacious 5-seater cabin reflects the premium position of the Touareg.

The highlight is the Innovision Cockpit – an intuitive combination of digital display panels merged to form a ‘one-screen design’. These consist of the 12.3-inch Digital Cockpit in front of the driver and the 15-inch touchscreen of the Discover Pro Max infotainment system with Wireless App-Connect and wireless charging.

An immersive “concert hall” experience is provided with the 730W Dynaudio Consequence sound system powered by an 80W amplifier. The system has 13 speakers strategically situated around the cabin with one sub-woofer located in the boot floor as well.

The 4-zone climate control (exclusive to the Touareg) will provide customisable, cool environment for front and rear passengers throughout the cabin. Rear passengers can also tailor the temperature, blower intensity and direction of the air to their preference. Active Climate Seats provide added comfort to front passenger and driver, especially during hot weather.

Air suspension with Automatic Self-Levelling is standard and provides highest level of driving comfort. It automatically adapts the vehicle height to match terrain conditions and can lower the ride height by 40 mm for easier loading or unloading of cargo. Wading level is an impressive 550mm.

Besides the Night Vision mentioned earlier, the Touareg is also supported by IQ.DRIVE, Volkswagen’s advanced safety technology which provides intelligent support to the driver to enhance motoring safety. The suite of active and passive safety systems also simplify driving, reducing fatigue and stress so the driver can enjoy the journey more. The system includes Adaptive Cruise Control ACC (with Stop & Go), Area View, Autonomous Emergency Braking Front Assist, Automatic Post-Collision Braking, Lane Assist/Lane keeping, Park Assist, Side Assist with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Advanced driver attention & drowsiness monitor and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

This Touareg generations were also the first Volkswagen model to be offered with Front Cross Traffic Assist, which uses the vehicle’s radar to monitor traffic approaching from either side at a junction. If there is the risk of a collision, the driver will be warned and if action is not taken, automatic emergency braking will be activated.

5 colour choices are available for the exterior finish – Lapiz Blue, Silicon Gray, Grenadilla Black, Oryx White and Dolomite Silver.

The Touareg R-Line is offered with the Volkswagen Assurance Package that includes 5 years free maintenance, 5 years unlimited mileage warranty, and 5 years complimentary roadside assistance.

In the realm of supercars, the Nissan GT-R has carved out a legendary status, and now, it’s preparing to bid farewell with a final, limited-edition model slated for the 2025 model year.

Since its debut in 2007, the R35 generation GT-R has cemented its reputation as a relentless supercar challenger, boasting remarkable performance figures that have kept enthusiasts enthralled.

2020 Nissan GT-R NISMO

According to insider sources cited by Japanese publication Mag X, Nissan is poised to unveil the curtain call for the GT-R on March 14, with reports suggesting that only 1,500 units will roll off the production line, including approximately 300 Nismo models. However, it remains uncertain whether these exclusive editions will be reserved solely for the Japanese market or offered globally.

While specifics about the final model remain elusive, considering the significant visual refresh the 2024 GT-R received just a year ago – with updated front and rear fascias – major overhauls for the 2025 version seem improbable. Perhaps minor aerodynamic tweaks or adjustments to trim levels may be in the cards, but a complete redesign appears unlikely, especially for a model destined to bow out after a limited production run of 1,500 units.

Should the reports hold and 2025 indeed mark the swan song for the R35 GT-R, enthusiasts can anticipate commemorative touches adorning the sports car, such as special badges or decals.

Under the hood, the regular variant is expected to retain the familiar 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 engine from the 2024 model, delivering 565hp and 632Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the GT-R Nismo variant could receive a power bump to 600hp and 651Nm of torque.

The 2020 Nissan GT-R NISMO

Upon its debut, the GT-R made waves in the supercar world. It stood as one of the fastest production cars globally, surpassing rivals at significantly higher price points. However, over the past 17 years, the supercar landscape has evolved, with lighter and more potent competitors entering the fray, effortlessly outclassing the GT-R.

While the 2025 GT-R may draw the curtains on the R35 era, Nissan is poised to usher in a successor in the near future. At the recent Japan Mobility Show 2023, Nissan teased enthusiasts with a glimpse of the future through the Hyper Force concept – a GT-R-inspired model propelled by electric motors, boasting 1,341 bhp.
