All business sectors that have resumed operations after the lifting of restrictions during the Movement Control Order (MCO) are required to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) specified by the authorities. These include social distancing, temperature checks and other precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Goodyear Autocare Centres throughout Malaysia are following the SOPs to ensure a safe environment for customers and staff, with guidance by Goodyear Malaysia’s Zero Contact Initiative. With this initiative, customers can get new tyres fitted at a Goodyear Autocare centre without any direct person-to-person contact throughout the entire process.

A Goodyear Autocare Centre

“As we resume our operations nationwide, we also embark into a ‘new normal’ era that calls for more vigilance and mindfulness when handling each and every one of our customer’s needs,” said Alex Ng, MD of Goodyear Malaysia.

“The assurance of Goodyear’s Zero Contact process – from the moment you drop-off your vehicle, and up until you collect it – is that there will be zero direct physical contact between staff and customers to minimise risk of any potential spread. We decided to extend this programme in Malaysia, off the back of the success it had in the United States, Australia and other ASEAN countries. We hope that through this programme, we continue to assure Goodyear’s loyal customers that we have taken all the necessary precautions for their personal safety and at the same time, remain committed to ensuring the safety of their tyres,” Mr. Ng added.

Through the implementation of the Zero Contact initiative, customers will have to first arrange for an appointment with their preferred Goodyear Autocare centre for services, either with a phone call or using WhatsApp.

At the stores, there will be specially-designated Zero Contact parking areas for customers to park their vehicles, as well as a drop box for them to place the keys. The Goodyear Autocare centre staff will then proceed to collect the vehicle and fit new tyres.

12-point Safety Check
Areas that will receive a free safety check

Before returning the vehicle to the owner, a 12-point vehicle safety check will be done, followed by the disinfection of 12 major touchpoints. These are complimentary services provided by Goodyear Malaysia for their customers to ensure that their cars are safe to be driven once again, especially for those who have left their vehicles untouched for a long time due to the Movement Control Order.

When the customer collects his or her vehicle at the Zero Contact parking area, there will be a checklist which has been placed in their vehicle. This confirms the clean-up done by the staff, as well as to notify them of any possible issue that the staff might have found while checking their vehicle, making it easy for them to rectify as quickly as possible.

Goodyear Zero Contact Initiative

Other precautionary measures will also be enforced at all Goodyear Autocare centres. For instance, staff are required to sanitise and disinfect all public areas, facilities, as well as any tools and equipment three times daily. The seats will be marked for alternative seating (to enable distancing), while standing markers will also be placed on the floor to ensure customers are standing 1 metre away from others when in queue. Customers are advised to settle payments using contactless payment options such as e-wallet, online banking or paywave.

“By rolling out this initiative, we hope that we are not only able to continue to provide better services for our customers as we all resume our everyday routines, but also provide an extra hand in helping to check on their vehicles’ conditions after this brief hiatus. Of course, the safety and health of our customers and staff are pertinent during this period, therefore we hope to see the support and cooperation from our customers and Goodyear Autocare partners to practise good hygiene and preventative measures throughout this period,” said Mr. Ng.

UPDATE AT 8:45 PM/June 10:
According to Bernama, quoting the Domestic Trade & Consumer Affairs Minister,
the government has not removed the ceiling prices.

When the Pakatan Harapan government was managing the country’s affairs, one of the things which it did for consumers was to cap the prices of RON95 petrol and diesel. Though the country didn’t have a lot of money and had massive debts due to the 1MDB scandal, the government was still willing to provide subsidies to maintain fuel prices when needed. The prior government had removed subsidies and allowed the Automatic Pricing Mechanism to determine weekly retail prices at the pumps.

The subsidies, though discouraged by economists because they can distort the market, helped to provide a degree of stability for businesses. Being able to make projections of future transport costs without worrying about fluctuations in fuel prices made planning less of a headache. It eased the burden on consumers already facing challenges of rising cost of living.

Petrol station

Change approved in April 2020
Now, under the present government, things have changed and they were done with no announcement (though through proper gazetting procedures). Apparently, the change was approved in April this year but we didn’t notice it because fuel prices had fallen very low (and people were more concerned about the MCO). It was gazetted at the beginning of this month.

There will no longer be any cap on RON95 petrol at RM2.08 a litre, nor on diesel at RM2.18 a litre. If global oil prices and other factors result in the Automatic Pricing Mechanism setting prices above those levels, they will be followed as there will be no subsidies used to offset the additional cost.

Oil refinery
With the global pandemic forcing lockdowns that reduced demand for oil, prices have been sliding down since the beginning of the year.

No subsidies needed since February
For many weeks since February, no subsidies have been necessary as the prices kept going downwards. The last time subsidies were needed was the first week of February when the government pumped in RM10.43 million.

In early March, the prices of RON95 petrol and diesel dropped below RM2.00 and kept going down to as low RM1.25 and RM1.40 for petrol and diesel, respectively. However, by the end of May, the prices started to slowly move up again, with this week’s levels being RM1.48 and RM1.73, respectively. Still some way to go before reaching the previous capped levels but the trend seems to be upwards and oil output and demand begin to be more in sync.

In a recent announcement, the government will exempt the 10% Sales Tax  on new vehicle purchases. The exemption, to be effective from June 15, 2020, will be 100% of the tax value for locally-assembled models and 50% for imported models (CBU or completely built-up). This is one of the initiatives by the government under the to help the auto industry regain sales momentum.

However, before June 15, Perodua will reduce prices (on-the-road excluding insurance) of all its five models by between 3% and 6% via cash rebates. This offer will be only until June 14, after which the new prices throughout the tax reduction period will be incorporated.

“Despite the tax reduction only becoming effective 15 June 2020, Perodua will offer cash rebates between 3% and 6% for the purchase of our vehicles beginning today [Wednesday, June 10],” Perodua President & Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad said.

“We want everyone to take this opportunity to own a Perodua without worrying about being left out. Please visit any Perodua sales outlet and speak to our authorised sales advisors for the total cash rebate amounts and the full price list that will be effective June 15,” he added.

Perodua Axia
Cash rebates to lower purchase cost of the popular Axia.

“Perodua is in full support of the government’s move to fully exempt sales tax for the purchase of CKD cars until the end of the year to shore up the domestic economy,” said Dato’ Zainal. “As Malaysia’s biggest carmaker by volume, we reiterate our commitment to the government to contribute wherever and whenever we can to ensure the industry can get through this difficult time.”

“The Malaysian public are understandably spending more cautiously due to COVID-19 and the Movement Control Order, although personal vehicles are still very much needed in these trying times,” he said. “This move to fully exempt CKD cars from sales tax is a confidence boost for the automotive industry – not just for car buyers but the entire ecosystem of manufacturers, suppliers and dealers. Along with low financing rates at this difficult time, we are cautiously optimistic that this will spur new car sales.”

With the industry shutdown for the very long period during the MCO, Perodua sold 52,920 vehicles in the first five months of this year, giving it a 41% market share against an estimated year-to-date total industry volume of 129,401 units.

BRABUS is well known for its high-performance upgrades to Mercedes-Benz models and while that forms the bulk of its business, the company can also do special protection vehicles for customers who need protection from more than just accidents.

The company produces an innovative variant of the current Mercedes-Benz G-Class armoured in accordance with the VR6 Plus ERV standard, known as the INVICTO. The all-terrain vehicle comes in three different versions: PURE, LUXURY and MISSION.

BRABUS INVICTO G-CLASS

In order to provide the occupants with maximum protection against small arms fire and explosives, the engineers from BRABUS developed the ‘INVICTO Shelter Cell’, a self-contained, self-supporting and bolted-down protective cell. In addition, there are further protective elements that are in part produced using a special 3D printing process and, of course, all-around extremely tough bulletproof glass.

After extensive ballistics and explosives testing, the protection levels of the INVICTO are confirmed to meet high industry standards. The armoured SUV can resist not only 7.62 x 39 calibre rounds (used in automatic weapons such as the AK-47), but also hand grenades and 12.5-kg explosive charges.

BRABUS INVICTO G-CLASS

BRABUS INVICTO G-CLASS

BRABUS INVICTO G-CLASS

However, the high level of protection remains largely unseen from the outside. It’s all ‘under the skin’ with high-tech materials used. A common feature of all three INVICTO models is the innovative special protection package developed specifically for the body of the G-Class. The doors and the hatch are fitted with newly developed protective elements, including extremely tough bulletproof glass.

In order to fit them into the body of the G-Class, the engineers developed an innovative structure for the upper windshield frame. It is the first time anywhere in the world that protective elements are used which are made in a 3D printer using additive manufacturing processes.“ .

BRABUS INVICTO G-CLASS

Unlike vehicles where the armour is retrofitted, the individual elements of the protection system by BRABUS is not welded separately into the bodyshell of the vehicle. Everything is bolted-down as a unit. To this end, the company manufactures precise-fit, hot-rolled steel armour plates and additional protective elements made from materials such as carefully selected fabric and fibre structures as well as from ceramic and metal composite materials.

Among the many special constructive features of the INVICTO Shelter Cell is the fact that there is no narrowing of the door openings whatsoever. Getting in and out of the vehicle comfortably is crucial for many owners of a G-Class. In addition, the protective cell has a zero-gap design. This means that the individual components of the armour are installed without any gaps between them. This is of elementary importance for providing maximum security under small arms fire or an explosive attack.

BRABUS INVICTO G-CLASS

BRABUS INVICTO G-CLASS

But active safety is not overlooked either and the engineers revise suspension settings and also components to match the increased weight as well as maintain safe handling. There’s also a high-performance braking system and 20-inch INVICTO wheels with special run-flat tyres.

In addition, the vehicle frame was reinforced in the area of the side members and the strut towers were reinforced as well. Despite the outstanding level of protection added, the weight increase is only about 1,000 kgs, which is relatively little in comparison.

BRABUS INVICTO G-CLASS

The INVICTO can be ordered with various petrol engines available for the current G-Class models. The cost of the protection packages start at 354,600 euros, which is equivalent to about RM1.7 million. If you are someone who needs such protection, chances are the cost will not be an issue!

Henry Ford II didn’t like the Ford Fiesta when he was first told about the project to develop a supermini in the early 1970s. Apart from a company view (in Dearborn at least) that small cars were not cost-effective, the grandson of the company’s founder grumbled that ‘I would have to sell millions of these little cars to make a decent profit’. He favoured the large cars still loved by Americans then as they provided good margins.

But the Fiesta was a Ford of Europe proposal and that regional subsidiary was doing pretty well with a popular range. What they needed was an entry-level model that could compete against the Italian and French superminis. In the end, Ford allowed the project to go ahead and the first Fiesta was launched in 1976.

1976 Ford Fiesta
First generation of the Fiesta

The Fiesta was a very successful model for Ford in Europe but in spite of its compact size, it was not sold in the Far East. Its cost base was European so it cost more than Japanese rivals, and Ford instead teamed up with Mazda to offer a badge-engineered range of sedans and hatchbacks (the Laser and Telstar) which could be more competitively priced than models from Europe.

It wasn’t until the sixth generation that the Fiesta became a global model as then-CEO Alan Mulally pushed his ‘One Ford’ strategy of having more products with shared engineering and parts to cut costs. It was produced in regions outside Europe, with Thailand being a hub for ASEAN markets. By the end of the 2000s, it was even made and sold in the US market.

2020 Ford Fiesta Hybrid

The model is currently in its seventh generation but a change in strategies by a new top management team at Ford has seen diminished interest in competing in Asian markets (apart from China) with passenger cars and the focus is on pick-up trucks.

After 44 years of having been powered by only internal combustion engines, the Fiesta is now electrified as well. As a supermini, fuel efficiency has always been high for the model but Ford, like other carmakers wanting to sell in Europe, has to go in the direction of electrification of its models and this week, the company has announced the first ever Fiesta Hybrid.

The carmaker’s best-selling model in Europe gets a 48-volt mild hybrid powertrain which complements EcoBoost Technology to give more powerful and responsive performance with better fuel efficiency claimed to be up to 18.3 kms/litre. The 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine also has cylinder deactivation to further save fuel.

“Adding EcoBoost Hybrid technology to Fiesta’s best-in-class driving dynamics means customers can have even more power and still go further on a tank of fuel,” said Roelant de Waard, Vice-President, Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe. “The Fiesta EcoBoost Hybrid will help Ford bring the benefits of electrification to more drivers than ever before.”

Hybrid
The difference between a Mild Hybrid and Full Hybrid powertrain

Available in 125 ps and 155 ps power outputs, Fiesta EcoBoost Hybrid models feature a belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BISG) in place of the standard alternator, enabling recovery and storage of energy usually lost during braking and coasting to charge a 48V lithium-ion air-cooled battery pack.

The BISG also acts as a motor, integrating with the engine and using the stored energy to provide torque assistance during normal driving and acceleration, as well as running the vehicle’s electrical ancillaries.

The intelligent, self-regulating mild-hybrid system continuously monitors how the powertrain is being used to determine when and how intensively to charge the battery for optimal benefit, and when to utilize the stored battery charge.

Torque substitution, which deploys the electric motor functionality of the BISG to provide up to 24 Nm of torque – reducing the amount of work required from the petrol engine and contributing to lowering carbon dioxide emissions and enhancing fuel efficiency.

Torque supplementation can also deploy the electric motor functionality of the BISG to increase the peak torque available from the powertrain by up to 20 Nm above the level available from the petrol engine alone. This means up to 240 Nm for the 155 ps powertrain and up to 50% more torque at lower rpm.

The BISG also has enabled Ford engineers to lower the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine’s compression ratio and add a larger turbocharger for more power, by mitigating turbo lag using torque supplementation that also rotates the engine faster for maintained turbocharger boost response.

Ford in Europe 2022

“With electrification fast becoming the mainstream, we are substantially increasing the number of electrified models and powertrain options for our customers to choose from to suit their needs,” said Stuart Rowley, President, Ford of Europe. “By making it easier than ever to seamlessly shift into an electrified vehicle, we expect the majority of our passenger vehicle sales to be electrified by the end of 2022.”

Powerbanks come in all sorts of shapes and sizes these days. Some have unique designs and for car-lovers, especially those who are fans of the Datsun Fairlady 240Z, there’s a powerbank shaped just like the legendary car. A product of Links International based in Japan, the powerbank is a collaboration between the 21-year old company and Nissan.

The energy storage device is a faithful scale reproduction of the sportscar and has functioning headlights and taillights which illuminate to indicate the amount of charge available and status. When charging a device, the white LEDs of the headlights come on, and when the remaining power is 10% or less, the headlights go off. Then the red LEDs of the taillights flash like a brake lamp; when the battery pack is fully recharged again, the headlights will switch on.
