A collision between a pick-up truck and a passenger car in Mersing recently resulted in serious injuries to a 1-year old infant and 6-year old child. Their parents, who were in the car, also had bone injuries. Witnesses who saw the accident take place were angered by the recklessness of the truck driver and also the fact that he sped off after the accident.

Being deemed to be ‘improperly dressed’ resulted in a woman being prevented from entering the premises of a police station to make a report concerning a car accident she was involved in. While she was no wearing a bikini, the Bermuda shorts she had on were considered to be unacceptable under the dress code set by the police.

The woman related her experience to Free Malaysia Today and said that it happened at the Kajang police station. She had gone there after being involved in an accident in Batu Sembilan, Cheras, having been asked to go to the Kajang station by the Batu Sembilan station personnel.

At the Kajang station, the guard at the gate refused to allow her in and told her that her clothes were not acceptable. He then advised her to change to something acceptable, presumably something which covered her legs completely. He was insistent about her complying with the dress code, saying that even ministers would not be allowed in if dressed like she was.

With 282,019 vehicles sold in 2022, Perodua continues to have a long waiting list (220,000 outstanding orders to fulfill) starting 2023. That might be considered a ‘good’ start to the year to already have such a huge order bank, but the Malaysian carmaker is not exactly happy either because it means customers have a long wait to get their new vehicles.

Since July last year, the priority has been to deliver vehicles to those customers who had booked before June 30, the date when the exemption of sales tax ended. By right, anyone who registers their vehicle after that date would not be entitled to the exemption. However, understanding the difficulties faced by the industry due to disruptions and parts shortages which affected output, the Finance Ministry gave a 9-month extension for delivery of vehicles which would be entitled to the exemption.

So Perodua, like many other companies, has been working flat out to fulfill those back orders – while new orders have also been building up in a buoyant market that saw the year’s Total Industry Volume (TIV) rocket past the 700,000 level for the first time ever.

Perodua will soon launch the next generation of the Axia, its entry-level model. The first generation was launched in September 2014 to take the place of the Viva. Up till the end of 2022, the total production volume of the model was almost 587,000 units.

The new model, coded D74A, is a larger model and uses DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) which is also used for the Ativa and Alza. The new architecture has high rigidity and is engineered for manufacturing efficiency as well as better build quality. It also offers designers more flexibility as it is versatile and can be used for different bodystyles.

Daihatsu has had a long presence in the Malaysian market which goes back to the 1970s when it began marketing the Charade hatchback. It was especially strong in the compact car segment and also had popular 4×4 models. Although its involvement in the establishment of Perodua saw it giving up its passenger vehicle sales in Malaysia, it continued to be active in the light commercial vehicle sector.

Last year, its Gran Max remained as the country’s bestselling pick-up/panel van model in the light commercial vehicle segment (below 2 litres). A total of 1,190 vehicles was sold nationwide, a volume that Daihatsu (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (DMSB) was pleased to achieve as conditions were challenging due to the auto industry being affected by supply chain disruptions and economic slowdown.
