The first month of the year was a short sales month due to the Chinese New Year festive season, partly the reason for the 35% drop in the Total Industry Volume (TIV) of new vehicles delivered. However, it was not an unexpected drop after the exceptional high of December which recorded the highest sales volume in 2022.

February is also a short month, some years made shorter by festive holidays, so it is also not a month when high numbers are expected. Nevertheless, February saw a jump of 27% from the January TIV to close at 62,649 units.

Puspakom will no longer monopolize the periodic inspection service of motor vehicles after its concession expires on August 31.

Puspakom was appointed by the government in 1994 as the first and only national vehicle inspection company.

Over the last 10 years, the average weight of vehicles sold has increased by about 9% or around 100 kgs. Sales of small SUVs have increased 5 times, becoming the most sold vehicles in 2022 with about 4 million new units put on roads across Europe. Large SUV sales have also further increased by 7 times, although the total sales volume is roughly 700,000 units.

Considering the impact of weight on consumption and on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and primary energy demand (PED) for production, a compact family car – with a 100 kg average increase in weight – is responsible for about 1.4 tonnes of additional greenhouse gas emissions and 5.7 MWh of extra energy used.
