Volkswagen is enhancing the driving range of its best-selling models—the Tiguan, Passat, and the newly introduced Tayron—by equipping them with the most powerful turbocharged petrol engines (TSI) in combination with 4MOTION all-wheel drive as standard. This upgrade enhances towing capacity, stability, and performance across various driving conditions.
The Tiguan and Tayron SUVs are now available in 2.0 TSI 4MOTION variants, offering two output levels: 204PS and 265 PS. The Passat 2.0 TSI 4MOTION is exclusively available with the higher 265PS powertrain. These models boast towing capacities of up to 2,200 kg for the Passat and Tiguan, while the Tayron can tow up to 2,500 kg with the appropriate equipment. Sales have already commenced in select European markets, with these petrol-powered variants complementing the existing 193PS TDI diesel options.
The integration of 4MOTION all-wheel drive provides improved traction and stability in various weather and road conditions. The system utilises a 4MOTION clutch to transmit power to the rear axle when additional grip is required. Under normal driving conditions, the vehicle operates in front-wheel drive mode to optimize fuel efficiency. Drivers can also manually engage all-wheel drive to enhance traction on snowy or challenging terrains.
For towing applications, Volkswagen has introduced an advanced Trailer driving profile. When a trailer is detected, the 4MOTION system automatically adjusts power distribution between the front and rear axles to optimize stability. The Tiguan and Passat 2.0 TSI 4MOTION models support trailer weights up to 2,200 kg, while the Tayron 2.0 TSI 4MOTION, depending on configuration, can handle up to 2,500 kg on a 12 per cent gradient.
The Tiguan and Tayron’s 2.0 TSI 4MOTION models in the 204PS variant feature a seven-speed direct shift gearbox (DSG) that delivers a peak torque of 320Nm from as low as 1,400 rpm. Fuel consumption ranges between 7.5 and 8.3 litres per 100km (WLTP), reflecting the efficiency of these high-performance SUVs. Top speeds exceed 220 km/h, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h achieved in under 7.5 seconds.
The range-topping 265PS 2.0 TSI 4MOTION engine, also found in the Golf GTI but modified for these larger models, delivers a maximum torque of 400Nm from 1,650 rpm. It comes exclusively with the R-Line trim, ensuring a sportier driving experience.
Performance figures highlight the capabilities of this engine:
- Passat 2.0 TSI 4MOTION – 0-100 km/h in 5.8 seconds, top speed 250 km/h
- Tiguan 2.0 TSI 4MOTION – 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, top speed 242 km/h
- Tayron 2.0 TSI 4MOTION – 0-100 km/h in 6.3 seconds, top speed 240 km/h
Fuel efficiency remains impressive, with WLTP consumption figures between 8.0 and 9.0 litres per 100 km, demonstrating Volkswagen’s commitment to balancing performance with efficiency.
With these enhancements, Volkswagen continues to expand its all-wheel-drive portfolio, offering a combination of power, efficiency, and versatility to meet the demands of modern drivers.
