JPJ Warns Against Rising Use of ‘Dummy Buckles’ to Bypass Seat Belt Alarms

The Negeri Sembilan Road Transport Department (JPJ) has raised concerns over an increasing trend of vehicle owners using “dummy buckles” to silence seat belt alarms instead of wearing seat belts properly.

Negeri Sembilan JPJ director Hanif Yusabra Yusuf revealed that the highest number of notices issued during the special Chinese New Year operation were for seat belt violations, with 195 offences recorded. Alarmingly, more than 30% of these cases involved drivers using dummy buckles—accessories that resemble real seat belt buckles—to disable seat belt reminders.

“We found that over 30% of drivers prefer to use dummy buckles to silence the seat belt reminder. Their common excuses include discomfort or forgetfulness. However, this is a serious offence as it increases the risk of severe injury or death in the event of a road crash,” he said during a press briefing at the Senawang toll plaza.

Hanif added that the widespread use of such accessories is becoming a dangerous trend, requiring immediate attention from authorities. He emphasised the importance of wearing seat belts correctly to ensure road safety and reduce fatalities in accidents.

JPJ has urged motorists to comply with seat belt regulations and warned that strict enforcement actions will be taken against offenders found using dummy buckles. The department continues to monitor the situation closely to curb this risky behaviour on the roads.
