Including 622 units of the smart #1 and #3 sold by its subsidiary PRO-NET, Proton’s total sales for 2024 reached 152,974 units. This success was achieved in a highly competitive market and during a pivotal year when Proton launched its first electric vehicle, the Proton e.MAS 7.
Malaysia’s total industry volume (TIV) hit a new high of 813,521 units, with Proton capturing an 18.7% market share.
Top Performers: Saga and SUVs Lead the Charge
The Proton Saga, an iconic model celebrating its 40th anniversary, led the brand’s sales with 72,769 units sold—a 3.7% increase over 2023. Known as Malaysia’s first car to surpass two million sales in 2023, the Saga continues to dominate its segment.

In the competitive SUV market, the Proton X50 and X70 stood out. The X50 retained its title as the best-selling B-segment SUV for the fourth year in a row with 23,647 units sold, buoyed by updates and strong customer demand. Similarly, the X70 achieved 8,992 units in sales, with a December increase of 36.7%. The flagship Proton X90 recorded 3,553 units, securing its spot as the best-selling D-segment SUV.
Proton’s other models, the Persona and Iriz, also ended the year on a positive note. The Persona achieved 18,853 units in total sales, while the Iriz closed with 5,113 units, both showing month-on-month growth in December.
Export Milestones and CKD Operations in Egypt
Proton maintained its lead as Malaysia’s top automotive exporter, growing export sales by 31% year-on-year to 4,765 units across 18 countries. Egypt emerged as the largest export market with 1,748 units shipped, supported by the commencement of completely knocked-down (CKD) operations.
Brunei set a new record with 1,200 units exported, making it the second most significant market. The Saga continued to dominate exports with 2,906 units, accounting for 61% of total export volume, followed by the X50 and S70.
Looking Ahead to 2025
Proton aims to build on its 2024 achievements as it heads into 2025. The brand’s emphasis on innovation, reliability, and international expansion will be key drivers for future growth. The continued popularity of models like the Saga and the growing appeal of Proton’s SUVs highlight the company’s ability to cater to evolving customer demands while maintaining long-term support for its users.
