Great Wall Motor’s (GWM) Haval brand is gearing up for a significant update to its lineup with the introduction of the new Haval H7 SUV. Zhao Yongpo, general manager of Haval, recently revealed the official image of the updated H7, which is poised to replace or complement the current Haval Xiaolong Max in the Chinese market. Notably, this H7 is distinct from the overseas-market H7, known as the second-generation Haval Big Dog in China.
Dimensions and Design
The new Haval H7 is positioned as a mid-sized SUV, boasting dimensions of 4780 mm in length, 1895 mm in width, and 1725 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2810 mm. These measurements are slightly larger than the Haval Xiaolong Max, which measures 4758 mm in length with a 2800 mm wheelbase. The H7 will feature a five-seat configuration, catering to families and urban drivers who value space and comfort.
Powertrain and Performance
Under the hood, the new Haval H7 is equipped with GWM’s advanced Hi4 plug-in hybrid technology. It features a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine (GW4B15H) paired with an electric motor. The system produces a maximum engine output of 114hp and includes a substantial 27.54 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. This setup delivers an impressive CLTC-rated pure electric range of 126km, a notable improvement over the Xiaolong Max’s 19.27 kWh battery and 83km WLTC-rated range.
Market Context and Strategic Renewal
The Haval H7’s history dates back to its initial launch in April 2016 as a rugged off-road SUV. It captured the market’s attention, selling nearly 50,000 units within eight months. However, its popularity waned with the rise of GWM’s premium Wey brand, leading to a significant drop in sales and its eventual discontinuation in 2021.
The reintroduction of the Haval H7 reflects GWM’s refined strategy to strengthen its position in the competitive SUV market. With enhanced dimensions, upgraded hybrid technology, and a focus on urban appeal, the new H7 aims to recapture consumer interest and fill a gap in the mid-sized SUV segment.
The relaunch of the Haval H7 signifies GWM’s commitment to adapting to market demands while leveraging its advancements in hybrid technology. By blending increased range, spacious design, and a refined strategy, the new Haval H7 aims to solidify its place in GWM’s evolving lineup and attract a diverse range of buyers in 2025.
