The Penang government has announced an extension of its popular Pas Mutiara programme, allocating RM7 million to fund 280,000 passes in 2025. This initiative ensures that Rapid Penang bus services will continue to operate free of charge throughout the state for another year.
Sustained Popularity of Pas Mutiara
Introduced on March 1, 2021, the Pas Mutiara programme has seen a strong uptake among Penang residents. As of November 2024, a total of 194,497 passes have been subscribed or renewed, with an average of 17,682 new subscriptions monthly.
CAT Bridge Services to Continue in 2025
Penang will also maintain its 15 free CAT Bridge buses for 2025, enhancing connectivity across key routes:
- CAT 13: 10 buses will link Seberang Jaya and Bayan Lepas.
- CAT 14: Five buses will operate between Bukit Mertajam and Komtar.
These services aim to provide seamless and free transportation for residents, reducing dependency on private vehicles.
Encouraging Public Transit Adoption
The programme is part of Penang’s broader efforts to promote public transportation, reduce road congestion, and lower commuting costs. Zairil emphasized that public transit subsidies not only alleviate the financial burden on residents but also contribute to savings on petrol, parking, and toll fees.
A Legacy of Free Rides Since 2021
Since February 2021, Penang has offered free, unlimited rides on all Rapid Penang buses. Originally launched during the Covid-19 pandemic to ease commuter burdens, the programme has evolved into a cornerstone of the state’s public transit strategy.
With the RM7 million allocation for 2025, Penang reaffirms its commitment to accessible, cost-free public transport while addressing the state’s transportation needs and environmental goals.
