BMW Group Malaysia marked the 20th anniversary of its Regional Parts Distribution Centre with a significant expansion of its cutting-edge facility in Johor Bahru. Located in the Free Industrial Zone of Senai International Airport, the centre now spans 65,000 square metres, up from 45,000 square metres, cementing its position as one of the largest BMW facilities of its kind in the Asia Pacific region.
Originally established in 2004 at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Gelang Patah, the facility relocated to its current site in 2016. Over two decades, it has evolved into a critical hub for BMW’s after-sales operations and regional supply network, demonstrating the Group’s commitment to Malaysia as a strategic logistics and innovation hub.
The facility’s expansion introduces key innovations:
- High Voltage (HV) Battery Storage Area: Supporting BMW’s growing EV ecosystem.
- Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) Racking System: Maximizing storage efficiency.
- Solar Panel Roof: Reinforcing BMW’s commitment to sustainability.
- Two-story Configuration: Enabling future scalability.
These advancements position the facility as a model of operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.
The facility’s turnover has grown from EUR 141 million in 2017 to EUR 277 million in 2023, a nearly 97% increase. It now handles over 100,000 inventory lines monthly and supports over 20 markets with a remarkable 99% service level. Key statistics include:
- 52,000 part numbers stocked, including 30 HV batteries.
- Weekly dispatch of 15 containers for sea freight markets and 33,000 cubic metres of airfreight.
- 42 trucks handling outbound deliveries across Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand weekly.
