Authorities have apprehended a 58-year-old man in Kampung Kok Keli, Tumpat, Kelantan, on suspicion of smuggling 15 illegal immigrants from Myanmar using a Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicle. The arrest, part of Op Taring, was conducted by the 8th Battalion of the General Operations Team (PGA) of the Southeast Brigade, according to Commander Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid.
According to FMT, the operation led to a raid on a house based on intelligence about human smuggling activities. Upon arrival, two suspects attempted to flee; however, one was successfully apprehended. Authorities discovered 14 men and one woman, all believed to be Myanmar nationals, in a Mercedes-Benz and a Grand Livina parked outside the house. None could present valid identification documents.
Commander Nik Ros stated that these individuals are suspected to have entered the country through unauthorised routes, and the detained man is believed to be the mastermind behind the operation. The illegal immigrants are detained under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, while the alleged smuggler faces charges under Section 26J of the ATIPSOM Act 2007.
