A passenger aboard an Electric Train Service (ETS) bound for Ipoh triggered the emergency brake mid-journey, resulting in a significant two-hour delay. The incident, which took place on 12 October 2024, is currently under investigation by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB).
The train, which departed from KL Sentral at 9:40 p.m., was scheduled to reach Ipoh by 12:16 a.m. However, the improper use of the emergency brake prolonged the journey, with the train arriving in Ipoh at approximately 2:00 a.m.
KTMB’s Group CEO, Datuk Mohd Rani Hisham Samsudin, confirmed that the incident was recorded on closed-circuit television (CCTV) and a detailed report is being prepared for submission to the Land Public Transport Agency.
“We urge all KTMB passengers to refrain from actions that disrupt train services, as safety and punctuality are paramount,” said Mohd Rani.
He further warned that any passenger found violating safety protocols could face legal repercussions under Section 122 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010. The law imposes penalties for the improper use of emergency signalling devices, which include fines of up to RM1,000, imprisonment for up to three months, or both.
