The Malaysian automotive industry saw a six per cent increase in vehicle sales from January to August 2024, with 533,301 units sold compared to 503,783 units during the same period in 2023.
According to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), 488,277 units were passenger vehicles, while 45,024 were commercial vehicles, compared to 451,403 passenger vehicles and 52,380 commercial vehicles sold in the first eight months of 2023.
Despite the overall growth, sales in August 2024 dropped slightly by 0.8%, with 71,162 units sold compared to 71,730 in July 2024. This is also lower than the 72,844 units sold in August 2023.
Regarding breakdown, 65,637 passenger vehicles and 5,525 commercial vehicles were sold in August 2024, slightly down from 65,709 passenger vehicles and 7,135 commercial vehicles in August 2023.
Vehicle production also increased, with 73,966 units produced in August 2024, up from 67,912 units in August 2023. This included 69,624 passenger vehicles and 4,342 commercial vehicles.
For the January to August 2024 period, a total of 536,313 units were produced, compared to 497,309 units in the same period last year. This comprises 506,374 passenger vehicles and 29,939 commercial vehicles.
