Proton has achieved another significant milestone in 2024, with year-to-date (YTD) sales surpassing the 100,000-unit mark for the sixth consecutive year. As of August, the company sold 101,489 units, solidifying its second-place position in the national automotive sales rankings with an estimated 19% market share. August saw 12,690 units sold, including both domestic and export sales, reflecting the brand’s continued strength.
The Proton X50 remained a key driver of growth, with 2,440 units sold in August, marking the third time in 2024 that sales have surpassed 2,000 units in a month. Year-to-date, the X50 has sold 15,229 units, making it the most popular SUV in Proton’s lineup. The strong performance reflects the success of the 2024 model, which was launched in June and has continued to outshine its B-segment SUV rivals.
Meanwhile, the Proton Saga maintained its robust sales momentum following a record-breaking 7,855 deliveries in July. In August, 6,211 units were sold, bringing its YTD total to 48,904 units—an increase of 6.7% compared to 2023.
Other sedans also performed well in August. The Proton S70 recorded sales of 1,205 units, bringing its YTD total to 13,755 units. The Proton Persona saw 1,452 units sold, resulting in a YTD total of 13,116 units.
In the SUV segment, the Proton X90 led its category with 241 units sold in August, adding to its YTD total of 2,507 units. The Proton Iriz, a B-segment hatchback, sold 403 units, with a cumulative YTD figure of 3,719 units.
Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Proton Edar, expressed optimism about the future of the automotive industry. “With Malaysia’s domestic economy showing resilience and GDP growth projected at 4% to 5%, we agree with the Malaysian Automotive Association’s (MAA) decision to increase the full-year total industry volume (TIV) projection to 765,000 units,” he said. He added that Proton’s performance, surpassing 100,000 units sold with four months remaining in 2024, demonstrates the company’s strength in the local market despite increased competition from new brands.
Roslan emphasized that the positive reception to Proton’s updated models, alongside the company’s extensive network of 3S/4S outlets, has been key to maintaining its strong position. “This speaks volumes about the importance of our enhancements and our commitment to serving our customers,” he noted.
On the export front, Proton recorded impressive gains in August, with export sales more than doubling compared to July. Brunei led the way, setting a new record with 120 units sold, the highest monthly total in the country’s history. The Proton Saga continued to be the best-selling export model, with 140 units shipped in August, contributing to a cumulative total of 2,110 export units for 2024.
Roslan Abdullah acknowledged Brunei’s long-standing relationship with Proton, noting, “Our latest range of intelligent models and the efforts of Pad Motors Proton Brunei have rejuvenated the brand, leading to a record sales month in August.”
With steady domestic growth and expanding export markets, Proton is well-positioned to continue its upward trajectory. As the company gears up for the final months of 2024, it remains optimistic about reaching even greater heights in both the Malaysian and international automotive markets.
