Honda Plans to Revive the NSX as a Sporty EV by 2028

Shinji Aoyama, Honda’s Global Executive Vice President, has revealed that the company is planning to produce a sporty electric vehicle in the coming years, potentially reviving the legendary NSX nameplate. Speaking at a media roundtable during Monterey Car Week, Aoyama hinted at the possibility of this new electric sports car being launched between 2027 and 2028.

“We are going to introduce the sports model in 2027 or 2028,” Aoyama stated. “We may not call it NSX. It’s kind of an NSX type of vehicle,” according to a report.

This new electric vehicle is expected to be built on the Honda 0 Series EV architecture, which was unveiled earlier this year and is scheduled for launch in 2026. The anticipation of an electric NSX has been building since 2021 when Acura executive Jon Ikeda hinted at the possibility, expressing the desire to make a significant statement with each generation of the NSX. “The first-generation was gas. The second-generation was a hybrid. There’s going to be another one,” Ikeda had said.

Speculation about the return of the NSX, or a vehicle in its spirit, has persisted since the model’s farewell in 2021. Although Acura has not officially confirmed the return, Ikeda further fuelled the rumours in 2022 when he told mentioned that he “would bet on” its comeback, adding that it would likely be all-electric if it did return.

The second-generation NSX, which concluded with the Type S trim in 2021, sold out its limited run of 300 units in just 24 hours, indicating strong enthusiasm for the model. However, overall sales of the hybrid NSX were slow, with only 128 units sold in 2020. Despite this, Honda has consistently emphasised the NSX’s importance as a symbol of their forward-looking ambitions, particularly as the company transitions towards battery-electric propulsion and a broader lineup of EVs.

The NSX, renowned for pushing the boundaries of performance and technology, is seen as the ideal platform to showcase Honda’s future direction. The potential revival of the NSX as an all-electric sports car aligns with Honda’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. Enthusiasts eagerly await this next chapter, hopeful that the NSX name will once again grace a vehicle worthy of its storied legacy.
