Proton sold a total of 10,999 units (domestic and export) in June 2024, maintaining its stronghold in the automotive sales table at second place. Despite a planned one-week plant shutdown for scheduled operations improvement, Proton achieved a market share of 19.1% for both June and the year-to-date (YTD). This brings the total sales for the first half of 2024 to 73,696 units.
The Total Industry Volume (TIV) for June is forecasted to be softer than any month this year, with an estimated 57,700 units sold, lower than the previous low in April, which was affected by the long festive holiday. However, the cumulative forecast TIV figure for the first six months of 2024 is approximately 386,600 units, nearly 20,000 units more than the same period in 2023 when it reached a new record high.
Proton X50 and Proton S70 Dominate Their Segments
June was a significant month for Proton, marked by strategic initiatives aimed at bolstering its market position. The company launched the e.MAS EV brand, celebrated the roll-out of its 5 millionth vehicle and introduced the refreshed 2024 Proton X50, featuring over 20 NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) improvements.
The updated Proton X50 saw an immediate sales boost, returning to the top of the B-segment SUV class with 1,711 units sold, its best performance in three months. With production set to increase post-plant improvements, sales are expected to rise in the coming months. The Proton S70 also continued to lead the C-segment sedan category, selling 1,440 units in June, maintaining its position as a market favorite.
Steady Performance Across Models
The Proton Saga remains a bestseller, with 5,441 units sold in June, bringing its YTD sales to 34,838 units. Averaging over 5,800 units sold per month, it continues to be one of the top-selling vehicles in the country. The Proton Persona also performed well, with 1,309 units sold, securing second place in the B-segment sedan category for both the month and the year.
The Proton X70 and Proton X90 recorded sales of 481 and 248 units respectively. The X70 is set for a comprehensive update later this year, while the X90 is gradually building a following in the seven-seater SUV market. The Proton Iriz finished June with 369 units sold, placing fourth in the B-segment hatchback category.
Proton’s strategic moves and consistent sales performance across its model range reinforce its strong position in the automotive market, setting the stage for continued growth and success in the coming months.
