In a groundbreaking move, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Chargeplus Sdn Bhd (Charge+) have embarked on a transformative partnership to explore a cross-border roaming platform for electric vehicle (EV) charging in Malaysia and Singapore. This forward-looking collaboration was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) exchanged during the TNB Energy Conference 2023, setting the stage for the development of a seamless network of EV charging infrastructure spanning international borders.
The MoU represents a strategic commitment to the shared goal of establishing a cross-border EV charging ecosystem, in line with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap, which aims to deploy 10,000 EV charging stations by 2025. This collaborative effort seeks to elevate the customer experience for both TNB and Charge+ patrons, offering effortless access to charging points during cross-border journeys. The initiative aligns with the broader vision of fostering electric mobility and sustainability in the region.
Charge+ stands as a subsidiary of Charge+ Pte Ltd., a leading EV charging solution provider in Singapore and Southeast Asia. The exchange of the MoU was a collaborative effort, witnessed by Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook.
The strategic collaboration positions Malaysia at the forefront of cross-border roaming alliances in the EV charging sector. According to NST, as part of TNB’s ambitious roadmap, this partnership will be integrated into a vast network of 30,000 charging points by 2030, establishing a 5,000km EV highway traversing Southeast Asian countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
This pioneering initiative would play a pivotal role in challenging and reshaping perceptions. By alleviating concerns about range anxiety, the collaboration aims to drive greater EV adoption in Malaysia and contribute to reducing overall carbon emissions.
Moreover, the strategic partnership will enable users of the TNB Electron charging station’s mobile application (GO TO-U) and Charge+ (Charge+) to conveniently access the EV charging assets of both companies. This cross-border integration promises a more convenient and streamlined charging experience for TNB Electron and Charge+ customers, marking a significant stride toward fostering regional electric mobility and sustainability.
