Back in 2022, Maserati revealed the Project24 as a concept. Later on, we got to know that it was renamed to MCXtrema and we got to see photos of what this Trident badge-bearing monster would look like and we were not disappointed at all.
Taking inspiration from the Maserati MC20, the confidently named MCXtrema has been envisioned as a modern heir to the iconic Maserati MC12 racing car from the early 2000s. The fiercely styled, Italian-crafted high-performance car makes its entrance boasting a significantly revamped design and substantially enhanced foundation compared to the standard MC20. These modifications are so extensive that only a minimal trace of the original car’s structure remains.
A significant portion of these enhancements has been geared towards augmenting downforce. Prominent elements of the newly prioritised aerodynamic design encompass substantial hood air-flow scoops resembling the brand’s iconic trident emblem, substantial front and rear diffusers, and a notably sizable adjustable spoiler.
An expansive roof-mounted scoop, linked to the spoiler through a shark fin, serves to cool the identical 3.0-liter V6 Nettuno engine also utilized in the MC20. However, the incorporation of two fresh turbochargers, coupled with the augmented airflow, propels its output from 621bhp to a formidable 730bhp. This substantial power is channeled to the 18-inch rear wheels by means of a six-speed sequential racing gearbox.
A sleek, low-profile front end featuring slender LED lights, race-inspired twin exhausts seamlessly integrated, and a prominently positioned emblem on the expansive bonnet collectively contribute to the exceedingly aggressive appearance. Additionally, Maserati has introduced fresh double-wishbone suspension, complemented by track-tuned four-way racing dampers, springs, and an antiroll bar, all of which offer complete adjustability.
The car’s light weight of 1300kg can be attributed to the brand’s dedicated efforts to trim excess weight from the original 1540kg MC20, in order to achieve a level of competitiveness akin to the MC12. This achievement has been made possible through the utilisation of novel carbon fibre bodywork and an enhanced chassis, both of which are crafted from ultralight carbon fibre materials.
Considerable attention has also been directed towards the interior design. The cabin features a solitary left-hand seat, which is accompanied by a carbon fiber racing wheel incorporating a built-in display. This seating arrangement is flanked by various groupings of control knobs and buttons. These controls manage a wide range of settings, spanning from steering calibration and traction control modes to brake balance, engine strategies, and even the pit limiter function.
For enhanced safety and chassis rigidity, a protective cage constructed according to FIA standards has been incorporated. Furthermore, the inclusion of a passenger seat is available as an optional feature.
Only 62 units of this limited-edition super sports car have been produced, dedicated to a selected, highly discerning clientèle in terms of performance and sophistication of design and all have been spoken for. It is said that this new toy is priced at £963,000 (RM5.7 million).
