Lamborghini’s Iron Lynx completed the first on-track running of its SC63 prototype during a two-day test at Imola, Italy. The Iron Lynx will be used to compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship and the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship next year.

The SC63 is the first Lamborghini hybrid racing car prototype with a 3.8-litre turbo V8 which is an entirely new engine from Lamborghini. It puts out a total of 671hp and the hybrid components include a motor generator and battery with a Bosch electronic control unit.

After a preliminary test in Vallelunga, Italy, at the beginning of the month, the focus immediately switched to Imola, where engineers from Lamborghini Squadra Corse and Iron Lynx, the factory-backed IMSA and WEC squad for Lamborghini, started calibrating the LMDh machine.

In preparation for two additional European tests that will be held at Paul Ricard and Spa-Francorchamps throughout the rest of August, official factory drivers Mirko Bortolotti, Andrea Caldarelli, and Daniil Kvyat each drove during the test, totalling 1500km, and concentrated on a number of SC63 development areas.

Over the course of the two days, the three drivers worked on a range of calibrations, most notably on the engine — the first custom racing engine created in-house by Lamborghini Squadra Corse. The Xtrac gearbox, which is standard on all LMDh cars but may be tailored to the brand’s specifications for gear ratios and mechanical differential slip, underwent further gearshift calibration. The crew also performed a brake migration, cooling data collection, a comprehensive aerodynamic test, and worked on traction control and speed limiter calibrations.
