Mazda Pulls The Plug From MX-30 In American Markets – Again!

The MX-30, Mazda’s first electric car in the American market, will no longer be offered in the United States after 2023 but will still be available in Japan and Europe and is also available in Malaysia with two variants.

Although the MX-30 offers a chic exterior and eco-friendly interior components, its low 160km EPA-estimated range meant that the quirky EV was essentially doomed from the start. The MX-30’s modest 32.0 kWh battery and 143hp single front-mounted motor resulted in an 8.7-second crawl to 100km/h from a stop.

Only being marketed in California further restricted the MX-30, so relatively few have been purchased. In 2021, Mazda sold 181 MX-30s; in 2022, 324 were sold. Only 66 were sold through June this year.

The MX-30 EV has been cancelled in California before. 505 automobiles were sold during its last run in the US, falling short of Mazda’s low target of 560. After that, the automobile was taken off the shelves for roughly six months with an unclear future, but it was revived in January of this year for another run.

Due to the cancellation of the MX-30, Mazda will not be offering any electric car models in the US once again. Although Mazda didn’t publish a press release announcing its withdrawal the last time, it did so this time. It is unknown if it will come back one final time or if it will be gone for good, but issuing a press release announcing its intent suggests that this is it!

However, Mazda had previously stated that a rotary hybrid version of the MX-30 will arrive in the United States in early 2021, but the MX-30 R-EV is presently exclusively sold in Japan and Europe, where demand is significantly higher.
