XRT Concept Previews Sixth Generation of Mitsubishi Triton

A new generation of the Mitsubishi Triton is on the way and to give the world an idea of what it will like is the XRT Concept. Mitsubishi Motors is displaying the concept truck at the 2023 Bangkok International Motor Show this week,

The concept truck’s camouflage (to hide certain design details) is inspired by lava rocks ‘packed with condensed energy’. Its sides have been adorned with a graphic of the 10-parallel line Ralliart brand with a motorsport legacy.

Technical details are not revealed yet although it is likely that there will be proven powertrains included, along with the robust 4×4 technologies that Mitsubishi Motors has developed over many years of Dakar Rally participation.

At the Asia Cross Country Rally 2023 in mid-August, Team Mitsubishi Ralliart plans to compete with a prototype cross-country model of the all-new Triton. Mitsubishi Motors engineers will accompany the team to provide support and also collect information that will be useful in the development of its production models.

With its first full redesign in approximately 9 years, the all-new Triton will be the sixth generation of the brand’s global pick-up truck. After the launch in Thailand, where it is made, the new Triton will be exported first around the ASEAN region and then other global markets.

5 generations since 1978
The current Triton is the fifth generation of the model line which goes back to the L200 in 1978. The Triton name began to be used in some markets from the third generation which was launched in 1996. However, in Malaysia, it remained as the L200 and USF (the distributor at the time) also called it the ‘Storm’.

With the fourth generation, which was built exclusively at Mitsubishi Motors’ factory in Thailand for the world markets from 2014, the Triton name came to be used more widely. In Malaysia, it was introduced in 2015 and kept growing in popularity. Last year, cumulative sales of the model crossed the 100,000 mark in Malaysia and it remains the brand’s bestseller here.

The current generation of the Triton (above) was launched in Malaysia at the 2018 KL International Motor Show.

“Since the Triton was introduced in Malaysia, it has proven to be one of the favourite pick-up trucks in the market with its rugged look, versatility, and good handling. It is capable in the harshest of off-road conditions but also perfect as an everyday vehicle. Our customers come from all walks of life – business owners, off-road enthusiasts, and lifestyle users. Over the years, with improved technology and functionality, it has inspired owners to take on challenges and push the boundaries in creating an exciting life journey, while fulfilling their dreams and ambitions,” said Shinya Ikeda, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.
