PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) aims to reduce the number of deaths and accidents on its North-South Expressway during 2013, using strategic data and statistics. The information will also be shared with other agencies such as the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).
The highway concessionaire has set a target of 7% reduction of the fatality rate involving all types of vehicles, especially heavy vehicles and motorcycles. This will be achieved in collaboration and enforcement by JPJ and PDRM.
The target is in line with the Malaysian Road Safety Plan to reduce deaths due to road accidents by 50% by 2030.
“To achieve this goal, PLUS in collaboration with JPJ and PDRM aims to reduce the rate of accidents involving heavy vehicles, motorcycles, accidents in emergency lanes and accidents caused by objects or obstacles on the highway next year,” said PLUS Chief Operations Officer, Datuk Zakaria Ahmad Zabidi.
He added that there will be a focus on the safety issues involving motorcyclists as these are the biggest contributors to the statistics.
Statistics on the highways operated by PLUS show that there is a reduction in the number accidents in 2022 compared to 2019. However, accidents involving heavy vehicles increased by 2%.
Accidents in the emergency lane involving damaged vehicles also increased by 5% compared to 2019.
